This study investigated the gender analysis of access to formal credit by both male and female small-scale farmers in the Greater Letaba Municipality. The study precisely identified and described the socio-economic characteristics of female and male small-scale farmers, analysed and compared factors influencing access to formal credit by both female and male small-scale farmers and determined the perceptions of female small-scale farmers towards the credit system. In collecting the primary data, structured questionnaires were administered on 140 respondents (70 females and 70 males) using stratified random technique. The study employed descriptive statistics, principal component analysis and probit model to analyse collected data. The probit regression model discovered that farm size, land ownership, gender, age, collateral and extension services had a significant positive influence on small-scale farmers` formal credit access. Based on the study findings, a set of recommendations for achieving equitable formal credit access by female and male small-scale farmers was put forward.

In this article, the main subject of interest is the media image of gender, which is a relatively new phenomenon in the Polish public discourse but arouses strong emotions. The content analysis included materials containing the notion of gender, published in the editorial section of “Gazeta Wyborcza” between 2010–2014. The research showed that the issue of the social and cultural aspects of gender is more and more often present in the public debate, which is strongly polarized in nature. The gathered data allowed for the enumeration of subjects which include the context connected with gender and showed the essence of presenting this subject, in a specific Polish daily newspaper, casting light on the debate in this area.

The aim of the study was to analyze the press coverage of sports published in the largest Polish daily newspaper, Gazeta Wyborcza, in terms of gender inequality. The content (both qualitative and quantitative) analysis method was used. In the study, the number of articles on women and men was examined, with the qualitative sections consisting of an analysis of gender stereotypes appearing in these articles. The results demonstrated the underrepresentation of women in the examined sports press coverage. The qualitative analysis showed that articles dealing with women’s sports included gender stereotypes. the articles focused on the physical appearance of women or on their non-sports lives. Infantilizing and marginalizing comments were also present. The study revealed the gender-dependent nature of the press coverage of sports in Poland.

The purpose of this article is discourse analysis of masculinity created in reports assessing the current condition of Polish startups. The analysis covered reports published by the Startup Poland foundation from 2015-2019. This text is an attempt to apply the heuristic framework of integrative gender theories to interpret the results of the research, and explain how the discursively masculinity was constructed. Startups as innovative professional structures belonging to the knowledge-based economy model are an example of organizations typical of the information society. Numerous studies report changes (crises) occurring among the practiced male patterns (especially those typical for the countries of the global North). The results of the analysis show that despite these reports, the largest startup organizations striving to produce innovative solutions and using modern solutions, on the discursive surface, are associated with cultural patterns of hegemonic masculinity. Polish startups, on a structural and symbolic dimensions, are a highly masculine spaces. However, due to the practice of achieving hegemony, they (startups) can be interpreted in terms of cooperative or hybrid masculinity.

Niniejsze opracowanie, mające charakter teoretyczno-empiryczny, ma na celu wykazanie nie tylko ważności badań nad dyskursem dla nauk społecznych, lecz również wskazanie użyteczności heurystycznej podejścia wypracowanego w (szerszym ujęciu) obszarze krytycznej analizy dyskursu (KAD), ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem perspektywy dyskursywno-historycznej (w węższym ujęciu). Celem artykułu jest wykazanie możliwości zastosowania metodologii wypracowanej w obszarze KAD-u do badań problemów lokowanych w paradygmacie wyznaczonym refleksją feministyczną. Analiza tekstu, ujmowanego jako instrumentalne studium przypadku, stanowi przykład możliwego zastosowania metodologii KAD-u w badaniach nad (nieoczywistymi) kwestiami ważnymi dla tego, jak dyskursywnie definiujemy męskość i kobiecość oraz jak konstruujemy wizje ról matki/ojca.
This paper aims at highlighting the importance of (critical) discourse studies for contemporary social research. By looking closely at critical discourse analysis (CDA) as one of the leading paradigms within the critically-oriented discourse research, this work emphasises the importance of both theoretical and empirical impact of CDA on studies located within the paradigm of feminist gender studies. After pointing out diverse theoretical and methodological synergies between (critical) feminist gender- and discourse-research, the paper exemplifies these synergies by means of case study of the constructions of motherhood/fatherhood in the Polish public discourse. As the paper shows, such, and other, CDA-based theoretical and methodological synergies applied in practice might, in fact, be pivotal for the development of both academic reflections and social understandings of gender (and parent) roles in contemporary society.

Studies examining teachers’ perceptions of the application of blended learning abound in literature, however, few have explored if the teachers’ perception differed in reference to their gender and teaching level. In the current study, English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ perceptions of Indonesian blended learning practices from the perspective of their gender and teaching levels were examined. A total of 247 EFL teachers across teaching levels, i.e. lower secondary school, upper secondary school, university, informal education and other levels were surveyed. Statistical analyses using Rasch Model and ANOVA were performed to analyse the quantitative data. The findings showed that teachers’ perceptions about blended learning were positive but were not statistically significantly different between male and female teachers. Regarding teaching levels, teachers’ perceptions about skill and experience and their motivation to exercise blended learning were significantly different (Fskill and experience= 5.373, p < .05; Fmotivation= 2.555, p < .05), whereas the interaction and communication as well as the effectiveness and flexibility domains were not. More specifically, university teachers’ perceptions regarding skill and experience statistically differed from those teaching in upper secondary school (M = 2.48, p < .05) and informal education (M = 2.48, p < .05). Insufficient training and supports on blended learning were the primary challenges that constrained teachers from designing and managing the blended learning activities, consequently preventing them from addressing technical issues that emerged during blended learning practices.

The paper presents the analysis and discussion of gender recognition based on human face picture. The research combines different features selection techniques with the set of softcomputing classifiers. We are looking for not very complicated, fast and sensitive approach to create the theoretical basis for real safety systems where the correct “on-line” gender recognition is necessary. We start from the already known differences between the female and male face. This is the key point to tune the preprocessing mechanisms. We propose the quite classic classifiers, but we focus on sensible correlation between the feature extraction and the actual classification. The significant set of the results are discussed and the best solutions are pointed. All tests were realised based on the well known base of face pictures with added set of our own collection. The proposed solution can be an essential tool for the monitoring systems, safety guards and systems to point the dangerous situations based on video data.

The subject of this article is a linguistic analysis of gender discourse in multimodal texts of press advertising. This analysis is a comparative one. The comparison is drawn between one Polish advert from a magazine Twój Styl and one German advert from Der Spiegel (both from 2004), which show distinct similarity in many aspects. For the discourse analysis a multilevel linguistic approach suggested by German linguists has been used.

This article presents the results of a content analysis of the opinion weekly magazines - „Wprost”, „Polityka”, Newsweek Polska” and „Do Rzeczy”. The Polish parliamentary campaign in 2015 is the period of research. The aim of the conducted analysis is to show if the Polish politician women are presented in the publications and what image of women involved in politics is promoted by the reviewed weeklies. The collected research materials analyse through the prism of assumptions of Muted Group Theory (MGT) created by Edwin Ardener and popularized by Cheris Kramarae.

Caring for a family member with dementia involves multifaceted relational issues linked to the construction of caregiving as an emotional, symbolic and morally sanctionable practice inscribed in kin relations and dominant femininity (Paoletti 2007). As the disease disrupts taken-for-granted expectations for a person with dementia and the entire family, this qualitatively new situation necessitates the (re)negotiation of kin roles and responsibilities (Peel 2017; Purves 2011). By applying conversation analysis and membership categorization analysis to an audio-taped open-ended interview with an American female caregiver, this paper investigates in-depth how she discursively navigates complex familial role-relational trajectories while assisting her mother with dementia. The study examines the situatedness of role vis-á-vis self-other relations with assumptions about categories within the membership categorization devices ‘family’ and ‘gender’ being critical to this process. It documents how the participant contextualizes care experience not only in the standardized relational pair ‘daughter-mother’ but brings into focus a broader constellation of historical, contemporaneous or hypothetical aspects of kinship ties (e.g., with her parents, siblings or children), each of which invokes distinct expectations, responsibilities and loyalties which sometimes competing with other relations. The study thus exposes certain commonsense propositions concerning normative family role-relationships which function as powerful benchmarks for making life choices, interpreting one’s experiences, and morally evaluating oneself and others while providing care to kin with dementia.

The article analyzes the way in which the modern car-advertisement defines the identity of women as potential purchasers – to whom it is designed to get through. The research includes language and iconic instruments by which this type of advertisement aims to create a feminized market of products formerly recognized as traditionally masculine. The identification of the addressee of each publicity material might be subsumed under a set of stereotypes, thus enabling advertisers to get across their message using the code of addressee’s own values. The present paper concentrates on the linguistic specifity of the ads for high-tech goods (automobiles) targeting the feminine public and eventually points out their high degree of markedness according to the sex of addressees. Discourse analysis and a closer look at linguistic means appearing in French, Spanish and Polish automotive commercials both reveals a stereotyped woman’s image and shows how they happen to perpetutate it.

Studies concerning the transformations of work have long stressed how flexible work has affected the lives and identity-setting processes of individuals. A salient aspect of the current changes consists of the gender issues concerning the reality of work and its representations. The aim of this paper is to stress gender-identitary positionings in the context of the stories of women and men in non-standard employment. The specific question that the article addresses is whether the increasing distance from the "standard" working model – concerning full-time long-term employment – is also being accompanied by a change in the prevailing gender models. In particular, the stories of women and men with non-standard and precarious jobs are presented, in order to show how, by means of narratives, gender models linked to precarious work are constructed.

Móstrase a escasa presenza de escritoras, así como os prexuízos sociais que tiñan que superar para traballar como actrices; canto ao tratamento que recibían no teatro de tese, proba que as mulleres das clases populares aparecían como vítimas propiciatorias dos poderosos. Entre 1920 e 1936, fronte a unha única dramaturga, Herminia Fariña Cobián (1904-1966), cuxa obra non chegou até a actualidade, houbo catro dramaturgos galegos que escribiron, e estrearon, algunha peza destinada a defender a igualdade de dereitos para as mulleres, tres deles do grupo xeracional das Irmandades da Fala e o cuarto, da Xeración das Vangardas: Donosiña (1920), de Xaime Quintanilla (; Entre dous abismos (1920), de Antón Vilar Ponte Ponte (1881-1936); A tola de Sobrán (1920), Francisco Porto Rey (1876-1941); María Rosa (1921), de Gonzalo López Abente (1878-1963) e Branca (1934), de Luís Manteiga ((1903-1949). Exploring language learners’ anxiety is not a neglected area of inquiry in applied linguistics research, which can primarily be attributed to the publication of the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), an influential instrument developed by Horwitz et al. (1986) to measure language anxiety. An ever-growing array of studies has employed the FLCAS and analyzed the underlying relationship between the focal construct and foreign language achievement, various individual difference variables and a variety of demographic variables, such as learning experiences, age, and gender. Despite the considerable number of publications, studies focusing on biographical variables and language anxiety have not been conclusive. The aim of the present meta-analysis is to analyze 48 studies that employed the FLCAS to look at the potential gender differences with respect to language anxiety. Although there is great variation in the methodological and reporting practices in the studies included, and findings show a tendency for females to experience higher foreign language anxiety, gender-related differences are not statistically significant. The results of moderator analyses showed that neither age nor target language, regional context, or, in the case of university students, their majors, influence this relationship.

The recent accounts of our era usually argue that pleasure, sensuality, and sexuality play essential roles in media and consumer culture. Advertising especially is regarded as a place where rational argument is displaced by pleasure and sex. However, it is hard to find systematic empirical analysis to verify these claims. In this article, I examine the pervasiveness of the ideal of pleasure empirically in television advertising by analysing 167 Finnish advertisements. The findings suggest that the prevailing discourse about hedonistic culture and especially the hedonistic advertising culture captures something essential, but that this discourse does not tell the whole story because it does not notice the flipside, the ideal of the ascetically-oriented body that appears as frequently as the hedonistic ideal.
