Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę interpretacji wybranych pieśni P.J. Harvey z płyty To Bring You My Love z 1995 roku. Na płycie tej piosenkarka mierzy się z tradycją bluesa, głównie z jego literackimi mitami. W swych poetyckich tekstach Harvey podkreśla ogromny ładunek erotyzmu i przemocy drzemiący w mitologiach bluesa; raz typowo męski, kiedy indziej podkreślający emancypacyjny pierwiastek kobiecy. Na takiej bazie udaje się artystce zarówno przedefiniować owe mitologie, jak i niejako przywrócić temu gatunkowi jego kobiecy wymiar.
The article’s goal is to interpret the selected songs from P.J. Harvey’s album To Bring You My Love (1995). On the album, the singer-songwriter struggles with the tradition of blues, mostly with its literary myths. In her lyrics, Harvey emphasizes the prevalent eroticism and violence present in blues mythologies—often male but, in some cases, subversively female. This tradition becomes the foundation on which she manages to filter those mythologies and simultaneously reintroduce the female dimension to this music.

Purpose – Sustainability is viewed as an encompassing perspective, as endorsed by the international policy context, driven by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We aim to examine how women entrepreneurs transform capitals to pursue sustainability, and to generate policy insights for sustainability actions through tourism entrepreneurship. Design/methodology/approach – Applying qualitative approach, we have generated empirical evidence drawing on 37 qualitative interviews carried out in Turkey, whereby boundaries between traditional patriarchal forces and progressive movements in gender relations are blurred. Findings – We have generated insights into how women entrepreneurs develop their sustainability practice by transforming their available economic, cultural, social and symbolic capitals in interpreting the macro-field and by developing navigation strategies to pursue sustainability. This transformative process demonstrates how gender roles were performed and negotiated in serving for sustainability pillars. Research limitations/implications – In this paper, we demonstrate the nature and instrumentality of sustainable tourism entrepreneurship through a gender lens in addressing some of these SDG-driven challenges. Originality/value – We advance the scholarly and policy debates by bringing gender issues to the forefront, discussing sustainable tourism initiatives from the viewpoint of entrepreneurs and various members of local community and stakeholder in a developing country context where women’s solidarity becomes crucial.

Academic literature has extensively studied the relationship between classroom attendance and academic performance in higher education. However, there is a lack of specific studies on higher education in tourism. To address this gap, this study investigates the correlation between class attendance and grades achieved by students in the Tourism Degree programme at the University of Zaragoza. The research incorporates variables of interest such as gender, academic year and course repetition, significantly contributing to the proposed predictive model. The subgroup analysis shows that women and students who do not repeat courses exhibit higher attendance rates and achieve better academic outcomes. Class attendance and course repetition are the most influential factors affecting students’ final grades.

This paper aims to reconstruct the biographical work (Corbin and Strauss) undertaken by parents of non-normative people. The initiating event of biographical work is the disclosure of a non-normative sexual orientation and/or gender identity by the child. For many parents, this is an event that causes a breakdown of previous schemes of action, a gradual loss of control, and suffering. The empirical data consist of autobiographical narratives of parents of people with non-normative sexual orientation and/or gender identity. The study involved mothers and fathers residing throughout Poland, who were selected according to the snowball procedure. The data were collected through the narrative interview technique and compiled according to the analytical procedure proposed by Fritz Schütze, which is part of the interpretative research paradigm. In the course of four parallel biographical processes (contextualizing, coming to terms, reconstituting identity, and recasting biography), the new experience is integrated into the biography, its consequences are understood and accepted, a coherent identity is reconstituted and a new course for one’s life are charted. The analysis of the narrators’ biographical work has made it possible to identify three categories that organize the course of the parents’ lives and identities—stigma, normalization, and activism.

Women empowerment agenda plays a crucial law in a global legal debate. Despite years of struggle and undeniable success in several fields, women remain vastly underrepresented in the workforce and business leadership. The areas traditionally associated with gender equality are located within the public law regulations, with the core of labor and social security law. At the same time, it seems that some useful tools can be also provided by private law. Therefore, in the thought of a multi-faced, comprehensive approach, it is worth evaluating the actual and potential law of the European company law regulations. The aim of the article is to present the current legal and research state-of-play, mark the research gaps and formulate hypotheses as to the possible developments in this regard.

In some cases, the teaching of Italian as an L2/LS language continues to perpetuate gender stereotypes, sexist or discriminatory elements. When this is not the case, however, it often fails to offer those approaching the study of Italian the tools and materials to address relevant issues and themes in the contemporary debate such as gender identity and the importance of using inclusive language. Aware that the didactics of Italian can be a fundamental tool for building a context of coexistence of differences, we want to reflect on the Italian situation and present some didactic proposals that can allow to combine in the Italian classroom a language education a reflection on gender identity.

The study was conducted in Ukraine during the onset of COVID-19 pandemic. The sample contained 232 individuals. The aim was to study emotional experiences and their connection with coping strategies in the context of gender differences. The research was based on the concept of differential emotions, and on the understanding of the accumulation strategies as a dynamic process, which is determined by personal prepositions and situational factors. Measures used in the study were the Differential Emotions Scale and the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The growth of negative experiences and stress at the beginning of the pandemic among men and women was confirmed. We described the differences regarding emotions and coping strategies. Women use emotion-focused strategies of social support, strategies of positive reappraisal of the situation, and avoidance, the acceptance of responsibility among women is associated with negative emotions. We found that women more frequently use two or more coping strategies compared to men. A different emotional basis of coping strategies, expressed at high levels of tension among men and women, was revealed. The defined features of coping behavior among men and women may help to determine the main goals for the development of preventive and psychotherapeutic interventions.

Our understanding of the world is possible through the use of culture and language. That is, if there were no language, there would be no intelligence. Because of the culture and intelligence, we acquire through language, each person exists as a reflection of the prevailing worldview. Each stage of cultural development is connected and comprehended through language. Language is not a tool for describing the known, but a tool for discovering the unknown. The true power of language lies in its constructiveness.

This paper aims to illustrate the research path and methodological aspects of the study of sexual normativity with reference to a specific population of the LGBTQ+ universe, namely binary and non-binary transgender people in the Italian context through the analysis and historical reconstructions of the path of gender afirmation, in daily life and in the narrative proposed by the main old media. The decision to orient the focus of the analysis on transnormativity is related to the observation of an important research gap present in the scholarly literature, which has so far analyzed the processes of the construction of sexual normativity in mainstream society - and, as a result, has produced several studies and theorizing on heteronormativity and the male homosexual population (or homonormativity) - while conspicuously leaving out noncisgenderist sexual identies (transgender, genderfluid, agender, etc.). Following up on these premises, specifically, the following research questions were set: what are the reference gender models that guide and direct the identity construction of transgender people? And what are those of binary and non-binary people? how do these models reflect aspects atributable to mainstream sexual normativity (mainly heteronormativity and cisgenderism) furthermore, what diefrences are evident among these reference models in relation to various socio-demographic and identity aspects (how do they vary according to age, educational qualification, gender identity status, and sexual orientation). In order to try to answer the questions of the research design, a survey was conducted, using a biographical approach, through the administration of semi-structured interviews with privileged witnesses working in the field of gender reafirmation pathways in the medical, clinical and legal fields, in order to reconstruct the chronological and cultural stages of the construction of transnormativity from the enactment of State Law 164/1982 to the present day. In contrast to this perspective, new, increasingly fluid, complex, and diefrentiated demands are emerging, which have generated debate on the one hand and tension both with mainstream society and within the LGBTQ+ community on the other. This article presents research on the dialogue between second-generation Muslim parents and children in the Italian context regarding gender identity, sexual identity, and gender education. Through the testimonies of young people (18-30 years of age), the nature of intergenerational dialogue and parental position toward the relational transformations that their children are experiencing is analysed within the Italian cultural context. For this purpose, 28 semi-structured interviews were conducted in 2021 with boys and girls aged 18–30 years and belonging to Italian Islamic associations. Moreover, 24 young people were divided into 4 focus groups to conduct an in-depth exploration of gender perspectives on these topics; these young people are active members of the Giovani Musulmani d’Italia (Association of Young Italian Muslims). A strongly taboo dialogue emerges from the data; however, this does not hinder young people’s search for greater openness to different forms of relationality and sexuality, both in their current lives and their future families.

The social role of a person, to a large extent imposed by the person’s sex, may change. The social role is given by a social construct called gender, while sex is given biologically. Gender theory or gender studies is a branch of science exploring sex and gender. Besides and in contrast to it, there is gender ideology, or better anti-gender ideology, standing in fierce opposition to every mention of gender. Gender theory uses rational arguments, anti-gender ideology usually does not. It may be portrayed by the example of the Istanbul Convention about violence against women and domestic violence. Its topic is not gender, but it uses the word gender from time to time as a useful instrument of gender theory. However, the Convention is presented by its opponents as an instrument for spreading gender ideology. The Catholic Church or their bishops in the Czech Republic are usually of the same opinion, they are also manipulated or are the manipulators themselves. This way their opinion does not correspond to the teaching of the Vatican documents and is misleading for many Czech Catholics. Nevertheless, the influence of the Catholic bishops is diminishing in many aspects, including the question of gender.

This paper focuses on gender-fair language and the attitudes of teachers and students of German as a foreign language (DaF) towards its use in university teaching. In the context of the survey study presented here, gender is understood as a construct that is manifested in specific, changing language use variants, such as in personal names. The surveyed teachers and students of applied linguistics at the University are current and future DaF linguists and educators, who, due to social changes, will be increasingly confronted with the issues under study in their professional lives. The aim of the study is, firstly, to determine whether gender-fair language is addressed in the DaF courses under study, if so, in what form and to what extent, and secondly, to record and describe the attitudes of the studied groups towards it, in order to raise awareness of this important phenomenon of contemporary German language use. Consequently, the conducted survey provides information about the presence of gender issues in DaF courses and the attitudes of the two groups towards gender-fair language. The results of the study are discussed in terms of their contribution to the development of gender-sensitive didactics of German as a foreign and as a second language.   .

The aim of this article is to analyze a selection of New Year’s Eve speeches delivered by the presidents of Catalonia in terms of the presence of so-called “inclusive language”. The examined texts all date from the past fifteen years (2008-2022), so they were delivered after the enactment of the Organic Law 3/2007 on the effective equality of women and men. The choice of Catalonia as the subject of this study is particularly interesting due to socio-political circumstances surrounding this period, such as the economic crisis, the referendum on the independence, the suspension of autonomy and the imprisonment of proindependence leaders. Therefore, while the speeches analyzed will undoubtedly emphasize the strengthening of identity and belonging, it is also relevant to examine whether these discourses reflect the use of linguistic means aimed at emphasizing the presence of women.

The reception of the work of Grazia Deledda (1871–1936) is a conspicuous paradox. Although she was a successful author and a Nobel Prize winner (1926), she is little known and little studied, especially when compared with the other Nobel laureates, in particular male ones. My aim is to investigate the origins of Deledda’s ‘misfortune’ by exploring the common issues critics raised with respect to Deledda’s books in her day. One of those was, prominently, Deledda’s alleged imperfect style, a recurring theme in criticism throughout her career. Also, the Sardinian dimension of her works left no critic indifferent and led to her writing often being reduced to ‘regional’ or ‘folkloric.’ Many critics insisted that Deledda’s Sardinia, little known on the ‘Continent’ at the time, enjoyed considerable success precisely because of its ‘exotic’ quality. Finally, Deledda’s status as a woman writer was a salient factor in the reception of her work. Indeed, critics tended to adopt a condescending, or even sexist, tone, whether their assessment of Deledda’s work was favourable or detractive, which was a real commonplace in the reception of women authors back then. My aim is to investigate the role of these issues in the exclusion from the canon of a writer who has remained unique in Italian literature to this day.
La ricezione dell’opera di Grazia Deledda (1871–1936) costituisce un vistoso paradosso. Sebbene sia stata un’autrice di successo, la prima e unica scrittrice italiana ad aver vinto il Premio Nobel per la letteratura (1926), è indubbiamente oggi la meno nota dei vincitori italiani del Nobel. Fu perfino derisa da colui che avrebbe vinto il Nobel dopo di lei, Luigi Pirandello, autore di un romanzo che la ridicolizza apertamente. Grazia Deledda rimane tuttora poco nota e decisamente poco studiata, soprattutto se paragonata agli altri vincitori del Nobel – non a caso tutti maschi. In questo articolo si indagano le origini della “sfortuna” deleddiana esplorando la critica coeva e concentrandoci sui temi che accomunano i critici. Primo fra tutti il suo presunto brutto stile, un tema ricorrente nei giudizi critici. La dimensione sarda delle sue opere, poi, non lascia nessun critico indifferente e la conduce a essere spesso ridotta alla parte di autrice “regionale” o “folkloristica”. Per molti, la Sardegna di Grazia Deledda, ancora poco nota nel “continente”, riscuote un successo notevole proprio per via della propria dimensione “esotica”. Infine il suo stesso statuto di autrice entra in gioco nella ricezione della sua opera. Come spesso accadeva all’epoca, si notano in effetti ricorrenti osservazioni condiscendenti, o addirittura sessiste, da parte dei critici, favorevoli o meno, il che costituisce un vero e proprio luogo comune nella ricezione delle autrici del tempo. L’intento è dunque di indagare il ruolo di questi temi nell’esclusione dal canone di quella che rimane ancora oggi un caso unico nella letteratura italiana.

In recognizing the symbolic potential of the body, fashion photography is a logical but critically underexplored area for the study of militarism in popular culture. Using the conception of imperial democracy as a theoretical framework, a semiotic analysis of Steven Meisel’s editorial “Make Love Not War” published in “Vogue Italia” identifies how gender and uniform are used to replicate imperialist narratives in a luxury fashion context. These visuals uphold the tenets of new militarism by fetishizing military aesthetics.
Uznając symboliczny potencjał ciała, fotografia mody stanowi logicznie uzasadniony, ale niedostatecznie zbadany obszar badań nad militaryzmem w kulturze popularnej. Wykorzystując koncepcję demokracji imperialnej jako ramy teoretycznej, semiotyczna analiza fotograficznego edytorialu Stevena Meisela „Make Love Not War” w „Vogue Italia” pozwala zidentyfikować sposoby wykorzystania płci i munduru do replikowania imperialistycznych narracji w kontekście mody luksusowej.
