Opis:
This study focuses on the inter- and intra-specific variability in δ13C and δ18O values of shells and opercula of gastropods sampled live from the littoral zone of Lake Lednica, western Poland. The δ13C and δ18O values were measured in individual opercula of Bithynia tentaculata and in shells of Bithynia tentaculata, Gyraulus albus, Gyraulus crista, Lymnaea sp., Physa fontinalis, Radix auricularia, Theodoxus fluviatilis and Valvata cristata. The gastropods selected for the study are among the species most commonly found in European Quaternary lacustrine sediments. The carbon isotope composition of the gastropod shells was species-specific and the same order of species from the most to the least 13C-depleted was observed at all sites sampled. Differences in shell δ13C values between species were similar at all sampling sites, thus the factors influencing shell isotopic composition were interpreted as species-specific. The δ18O values of shells were similar in all the species investigated. Significant intra-specific variability in shell δ13C and δ18O values was observed not only within the populations of Lake Lednica, which can be explained by heterogeneity of δ13C DIC, δ18O water and water temperature between the sites where macrophytes with snails attached were sampled, but also between individuals sampled from restricted areas of the lake’s bottom. The latter points to the importance of factors related to the ontogeny of individual gastropods.

Opis:
The diversity of residual colour patterns is revealed for the first time in the European fossil Ampullinidae. The colour patterns were studied under Ultraviolet (UV) light in approximately 3100 specimens belonging to 83 species, 12 genera (Ampullina, Globularia, Crommium, Amaurellina, Pachycrommium, Amauropsina, Ampullonatica, Eocernina, Ampullinopsis, Vanikoropsis, Pictavia, and Ampullospira) and three subgenera (Globularia, Deshayesia, and Cernina within the genus Globularia). Forty−six Cainozoic species revealed residual colour patterns and 29 of them, belonging to six genera (Ampullina, Globularia, Crommium, Amaurellina, Pachycrommium, Amauropsina), are described herein as examples representing the entire diversity of the encountered colour patterns. These patterns are most diverse during the Middle Eocene coincident with the period of highest taxonomic diversity of the Ampullinidae. Four basic classes, regarded as containing possible homologous colour patterns in terms of pigments incorporation modalities, are proposed. Class I, a fluorescent wide diffuse area or spiral stripes, occurs in most of the species, while the three others are more peculiar. Class II, fluorescent axial zigzagging stripes, Class III, fluorescent axial to slightly opisthocline stripes or segments, and Class IV, fluorescent patches forming axial segments by coalescence, allow an easy distinction between the genera Globularia, Pachycrommium, and three peculiar species of Ampullina. The bauplan of the colour patterns revealed in Globularia is very similar to that of the single extant species, Globularia (Cernina) fluctuata. This supports the view of previous authors who classified them in the same genus. Furthermore, at the family level, the peculiar residual patterns belonging to classes II, III, and IV have not been observed in naticid gastropods. Thus our results for the Cainozoic fossil record are consistent with the conclusions based on anatomy and feeding habits, namely that ampullinid gastropods, regarded for a long time as belonging to the family Naticidae, constitute a family apart.

Drill holes on tests of Echinocyamus linearis from the Middle Miocene Korytnica Basin represent the first well documented fossil record of cassid predation from Poland. These traces complement the ecological information on the size and structure of cassid populations recorded by body fossils. The high number of drill holes recognised from the Heterostegina Sands, the uppermost part of the Korytnica depositional sequence, indicates the occurrence of a large cassid population during the late stage of development of the Korytnica Basin. The small size of most of the drill holes indicates that juvenile gastropods of the family Cassidae, which are not preserved in the fossil record of the investigated area, were also present in the cassid populations.

Effectiveness of several kinds of beer and molluscicides in gastropod control was tested in a 15-week experiment in an allotment garden, using plants of Callistephus chinensis. Among the total of 462 gastropods trapped during the observation period, 98.1% were slugs; the greatest number of gastropods was trapped in July, in the first week of the experiment. The most effective baits were beer Żubr (25.5% of all trapped gastropods), Mesurol SK 04 GB (14.5%) and beer Żywiec Porter (13.2%). The degree of plant damage dependend negatively on the number of trapped gastropods, suggesting a possibility of slug control in allotments by means of various kinds of baits.

Small round holes in the tests of fossil echinoids present problems of interpretation, the most obvious questions being who did it and why? Both have been the cause of considerable conjecture by ichnologists and echinoderm palaeontologists. “Drill holes” described from the Miocene of Poland in the echinoid Echinocyamus linearis Capeder are classified within the ichnospecies Oichnus simplex Bromley. Contrary to the original analysis, the possibility remains that some of these holes were the result of eulimid parasitism rather than predation by juvenile cassids. If other, larger echinoids in the fauna suffered predation by adult cassids, then the available samples are probably too small for it to be recognised.

A valvatiform hydrobiid gastropod, found in a spring at Dhiaselo, W of Sparta, N. Taigetos Mts., Peloponnese, Greece, was identified as Horatia hadei Gittenberger, 1982. Its protoconch sculpture, female reproductive organs and penis morphology are characteristic of Daphniola Radoman, 1973. Maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis based on COI (cytochrome oxidase subunit I) fragments of mtDNA proved that the species is congeneric with D. exigua (A. Schmidt, 1856) and D. louisi Falniowski et Szarowska, 2000, and thus belongs to the genus Daphniola, and that D. hadei, D. exigua and D. louisi are species-level distinct taxa.

A new, relatively diverse gastropod fauna is reported from the Chubut province of west−central Patagonia. The gastropod association at the “El Córdoba” fossiliferous locality (Lower Toarcian of Osta Arena Formation) consists of three new species: the eucyclid Amberleya? espinosa sp. nov. and two procerithiids Cryptaulax damboreneae sp. nov. and Cryptaulax nulloi sp. nov. Other members of the association are the ataphrid Striatoconulus sp., discohelicid Colpomphalus? sp., and an undetermined zygopleurid. Knowledge on Early Jurassic gastropods from South America and other southern continents is reviewed to show that the taxonomic composition of the El Cordoba association strongly resembles other gastropod associations of this age (even those from Europe), suggesting a wide distribution of cosmopolitan genera.

A new gastropod fauna is reported from Chubut province of west−central Patagonia. Members of Trochoidea, Pseudo− melanoidea, Campaniloidea, and Nerinoidea are recorded from the Early Jurassic (Late Pliensbachian–Early Toarcian) of Mulanguińeu Formation. The gastropod fauna consists of two new species: the pseudomelaniid Pseudomelania feruglioisp. nov. and the protorculid Anulifera chubutensissp. nov. Other members of the association are Pseudomelania sp.; the ampulloispirids Globularia cf. catanlilensis, Globularia sp., and Naricopsina? sp.; the nerineids Nerinea? sp. 1 and Nerinea? sp. 2; the trochids Lithotrochus humblodtii, Lithotrochus cf.rothi, and two indeterminable trochids species. An analysis of diversity was made considering all gastropod fauna recovered so far from five fossiliferous localities sampled in west−central Patagonia. The preliminary results of this study suggests that the Jurassic marine sequences of west central Chubut province are dominated by gastropods of Eucyclidae, Pseudomelaniidae, Procerithiidae, and Ampullinidae groups. However, the rarefaction curves of particular marine gastropod faunas in the Jurassic of Patagonia are still far from saturation requiring further collecting effort.

Although the record of Paleozoic drillholes is long and extensive, evidence pertaining to the identity of the drillers is sparse. The most conclusive evidence, a driller “caught in the act”, has been documented only once (Baumiller 1990). In that example, a drillhole in the calyx of a crinoid was found directly beneath an attached platyceratid gastropod. Additional evidence for drilling by platyceratids has been circumstantial, i.e., based on the association of platyceratids with certain blastoids and crinoids, and the presence of drillholes in other crinoid and blastoid taxa. To a skeptic, the lack of congruence between drilled and platyceratidinfested crinoids and blastoids is not sufficient evidence that platyceratids were the drillers. More conclusive evidence requires examples of drillholes in taxa that are known to have been platyceratid−infested, preferably from localities where both infested specimens and drilled specimens co−occur.
