The purpose of this article is to review the possibilities of using well logging in the exploration and completion of the shale gas plays. This presentation is addressed to a broad geological community. The article was divided in two parts: the first one, already published in PG, which was focused on the borehole logging tools and methods, and the current one, which deals with the construction of petrophysical models and considers some specific aspects of well-logging application in the shale gas plays. For more inquiring readers, a comprehensive list of literature is presented. The construction of petrophysical models in the thin-bedded shale-sand Miocene gas formation of the Carpathian Foredeep is presented briefly as a possible predecessor of the methodology applicable in the shale gas plays based on domestic experiences. However, the application of well logging in shale gas formations, both at the evaluation and completion steps, differs in the methodology in comparison to conventional and even to thin-bed formations. This specificity is also discussed, where attention is focused on the quantity and quality of organic matter and its relation to gas. Low porosity and a special kind of pore space in organic shales are considered as well.

The purpose of this article is to review the possibilities of using well logging in the exploration and completion of the shale gas plays. This presentation is addressed to a broad geological community. The article is divided in two parts, the first is focused on the borehole logging tools and methods, while the second describes the construction of petrophysical models and considers some specific aspects of well logging application in the shale gas plays. For the more inquiring readers a comprehensive list of literature is presented. Well logging is the way to acquire an important geological information from the boreholes, parallel to the core data analysis. Laboratory core analysis gives most reliable and comprehensive description of rock parameters, like mineral and chemical composition, kerogen content and its maturity, porosity, the pore space structure, density, permeability etc. However, this kind of analysis is time consuming and expensive. On the other hand, well logs give less accurate and usually not directly measureable values, which must be interpreted to achieve the requested parameters. These measurements are made continuously in natural rock conditions and the results can be obtained very quickly. Proper calibration methods are necessary to link the logging data and the detailed laboratory core analyses. A wide range of well logging tools is described briefly in the paper, and the electrical, nuclear, NMR, and sonic methods are presented in more detail. Special attention is paid to the great technological progress in well logging during the last two decades. This progress allows to cope with the increasing difficulties in the reservoir evaluation. Complicated geometry of the directional borehole, thin beds, shaly-sand lithologies, low porosities, and the specific the pore space distributions are the main challenges in the shale gas plays.

Opis:
Sustained casing pressure (SCP) represents a major issue because of its large scale occurrence and risks to health, safety, and the environment. Present regulatory assessment of sustained casing pressure is mostly qualitative with implicit risk formulation. It currently holds that wells with casing head pressure that can be bled-down to zero and is followed by slow 24-hour pressure buildup are below acceptable level of risk. This study introduces new quantitative metrics of well integrity loss risk - the instant cement sheath leak rate of 15 scf/min (barrier integrity), and the total annual environmental gas discharge of 6 tons of volatile organic compounds (VOC) per year. Field data from 19 wells reportedly affected by sustained casing pressure (SCP) are examined with a SCP testing software to assess whether or not wells with pressure that is able to bleed to zero would meet the proposed criteria. Using modeling and software tools developed by Xu and Wojtanowicz (2001) and Kinik and Wojtanowicz (2011), it is determined that three of the 19 wells (15.8) examined would fail the instant leak rate criterion. On the total discharge criterion, assuming the wells' annuli above the cement top filled out with seawater, it was also found, again, that 15.8 percent of the wells would fail the total environmental discharge criterion. Moreover, for the worst-case scenario of absolute open gas flow (empty annulus above the cement top), five of 19 wells (26.3) would fail the criterion. It is shown that - statistically, the bleed-down of casing pressure to zero gives a 90-percent confidence of the well passing the proposed criteria. Furthermore, no clear correlation was observed between pressure build-up and the barrier integrity or the environmental gas discharge criteria, thus questioning the 24-hour pressure buildup relevance as a risk indicator.

Opis:
Considerable number of producing and abandoned wells with sustained casing head pressure (SCP) constitutes a potential new source of continuous natural gas emission from failed casing heads due to leaching cement sheath and external gas migration. Present regulations require assessment of SCP severity based upon a testing procedure that involves casing pressure bleed-off followed with pressure buildup. The test analysis, however, is qualitative and risk qualification - arbitrary, with no insight of the gas migration process. The objective of this work is to consider SCP an environmental hazard and analyze the Bleed-off/Buidup (B-B) tests quantitatively to determine maximum possible emissions and their probabilistic risk. The maximum SCP is directly related to the potential failure of the well's containment and breaching of the gas outside the well. Probabilistic approach is used to analyze the uncertainty of the maximum casing shoe pressure resulting from SCP and the uncertainty in determination of casing shoe strength determined by Leak-off test (LOT). The study contributes in the area of SCP well testing methodology and the environmental analysis of wells with small SCP that may be of no concern to operator but may have environmental consequences.

Purpose: The purpose of this work is to consider the complications that arise while operating gas condensate wells, in particular, the accumulation of hydrocarbon condensate, formation and condensation water at wells and flowlines, to develop a method for removing liquid from wells and flowlines before it entering a gas treatment unit and being treated with surfactants and to develop a method for the foam destruction in the gas-liquid flow. Design/methodology/approach: The operational parameters of gas-condensate wells of the Yuliivske oil and gas condensate field (OGCF) have been analysed. Wells have been identified that are operated in difficult conditions due to the accumulation of the liquid at the bottom hole and in flowlines. The volume of the liquid accumulated at the bottom hole of gas condensate wells is estimated. The quantity of surfactants, the volume and concentration of the solution required to remove the liquid were calculated individually for each well. The program of experimental researches has been made. The efficiency of the application of surfactant solution was experimentally determined and a positive result was achieved in the form of an increase in production by 10%. A new approach to the use of surfactant solution, as well as the foam destruction, has been proposed. The studies were performed within the framework of research and development work by the specialists of the Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Natural Gases. Findings: Comprehensive measures are proposed to increase the efficiency of gas condensate wells operation. They are monitoring of operational parameters of wells by pressure and temperature gauges installed at the wellhead and at the inlet gas pipelines of the gas treatment unit; calculation of the volume of accumulated fluid in the wellbore and flowline; installation of a complex of automated feeding a surfactant solution of both in the annulus of the wells and in the flowline. For this purpose, two options for the complex and and have a different principle of operation. To prevent foam from entering the gas treatment unit, a method of its destruction has been proposed. The implementation of the proposed comprehensive measures will allow controlling the well operation mode, timely liquid removal from the well and the flowline and ensure stable hydrocarbon production. Research limitations/implications: The obtained results of laboratory and experimental studies have shown that using a surfactant solution is reasonable to remove the liquid from gas condensate wells. To increase the efficiency of the measure, a new method of feeding surfactant solution was developed by installing a unit for automated feeding (UAF) of a surfactant solution at the mouth. Practical implications: The results of laboratory tests allow using a surfactant solution reasonably in order to remove the liquid from gas condensate wells, as well as possible further destruction of foam in the gas-liquid flow for increasing both the efficiency of the extraction and production volume. Originality/value: On the basis of previously performed experimental research, it has been established that it is advisable to use a surfactant solution to remove the liquid from gas condensate wells and flowlines. A new method of removing liquid from gas condensate wells and flowlines has been developed, as well as a method of destroying foam in a gas-liquid flow, which are original and can be implemented.

Purpose: The purposes of this article are to study the effective ways of increasing the hydraulic efficiency of gas gathering pipelines of the Yuliivskyi oil and gas condensate production facility (OGCPF); to calculate the operation efficiency of gas gathering pipelines of the Yuliivskyi OGCPF and develop a set of measures to monitor their condition and improve their hydraulic characteristics; to investigate the technology of cleaning the inner cavity of flowlines of gas-condensate wells with foam, to perform the feasibility study on the prospects of its application in practice. Design/methodology/approach: The technology of cleaning the inner cavity of flowlines of gas-condensate wells with foam was investigated to objectively evaluate its application and determine the effectiveness of this measure. The research was carried out within the framework of research and development work by the specialists of the Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Natural Gases. Findings: The results of production studies showed that due to cleaning the flowlines of gas-condensate wells (No.85 and No.60) from the accumulation of liquid, the coefficients of their hydraulic efficiency increased by 12% and 7%, respectively. Measures taken to clean the inner cavity of the flowlines from liquid have proven their efficiency and can be recommended for other flowlines of wells at other production fields. Research limitations/implications: Based on the characteristics of gas gathering pipelines, it is reasonable to conduct experimental studies on the use of the proposed technology of cleaning the inner cavity with foam in the case of increasing its multiplicity. Practical implications: Using the wells of the Yuliivske oil and gas condensate field as case studies, the operating parameters were measured and the pressure losses along the length of the flowlines were calculated. According to the results of calculations at two wells (No.85 and No.60), a significant excess of the actual value of the flow friction characteristic over the theoretical value was established. To reduce excessive pressure losses due to the presence of liquid and improve the hydraulic characteristics of the wells, their inner cavities were cleaned using foam with the expansion ratio from 40 to 100. Originality/value: It is important to note that the advantages of foam piston include: ease of use, no occurrence of hydraulic shocks and preventing stuck during movement in the gas pipeline, application in both straight and inclined sections, no wear of the elements of the cleaning equipment, a rather efficient cleaning of gas pipelines.

Purpose The purpose is to consider the complications that arise during the operation of gas condensate wells, in particular, the accumulation of liquid contamination. Development of new approaches to improve the efficiency of the separation equipment performance of gas gathering and treatment systems when a multiphase flow enters. Development of a foam breaking method in a gas-liquid flow after removal of liquid contaminants from wells and flowlines using surfactants. Design/methodology/approach An analysis was made of the complications that may arise when removing liquid contaminants from wells and flowlines using surfactants. Measures have been developed that will make it possible to timely prevent the ingress of foam into the separation equipment of gas gathering and treatment systems. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling, an effective foam-breaking device was developed by supplying stable hydrocarbon condensate. Findings A method to minimize the negative impact of foam on the operation of separation equipment after fluid removal from wells and gas condensate field flowlines using a surfactant solution was elaborated. A method for its breaking was proposed to prevent the flow of foam into the gas processing unit. This method foresees the application of the technological scheme layout for supplying a stable hydrocarbon condensate to a gas-liquid flow entering the separators of the first of separation, both the main line and the measuring line. CFD modelling was used to study the process of foam breaking by feeding hydrocarbon condensate into it. The influence of the hydrocarbon condensate supplying method on gas-dynamic processes (distribution of pressure, velocity, volumetric particles of phases), and the efficiency of foam breaking was estimated. It was established that the supply of hydrocarbon condensate from one branch pipe to the pipeline through which the foam moved did not ensure its complete breaking. To increase the efficiency of foam breaking, a device with designed four nozzles for supplying hydrocarbon condensate was developed. CFD modelling made it possible to substantiate that in this case, a pressure reduction zone appeared at the place of condensate supply. Because of a sharp change in pressure, a strong improvement in the effect of foam breaking occurred. The understanding of the regularities of foam breaking processes by hydrocarbon condensate was obtained, and the design of a device for the complete foam breaking was developed. Research limitations/implications The obtained results of laboratory studies have shown that a sharp decrease in the stability of the foam occurs under the condition of an increase in the volume of stable hydrocarbon condensate added to the studied model of mineralized formation water. Based on the results of CFD modeling, a device for breaking foam by stable hydrocarbon condensate has been worked out, the effectiveness of which will be confirmed experimentally and in field conditions. Practical implications The results of the performed laboratory studies and CFD modelling allow a more reasonable approach to using various available methods and measures to prevent the ingress of foam with a gas-liquid flow into the separation equipment of gas gathering and treatment systems. This approach makes it possible to develop new effective ways and measures to prevent this complication. Originality/value Based on CFD modelling, it was found that when a stable hydrocarbon condensate is supplied into a gas-liquid flow, foam breaks. A method for breaking foam in a gas-liquid flow has been developed, which is original and can be introduced in practice.

Rehabilitation operations are applied to mature gas field, which although have a significant history production, owns a continuous energetical capacity which could be exploited in economicaly efficient conditions. For rehabilitation are selected from all the mature fields those which could additionally offer to the currently obtained basis production, a supplementary production, generated through interventions in reservoirs, wells or surface infrastructure. Although the opportunity of mature gas field rehabilitation is evident and unanimously accepted, the effective implementation of the concept represents a complex intervention. This fact is just due to natural gas reservoirs diversity, which involves developing particular models of rehabilitation, adapted to each reservoir capability. Conceptually, mature gas field rehabilitation can be divided in three sequences: reservoir, well, surface facilities. Intervention in one section or another, or concomitent intervention in all three sequences, is dictated by technical and economical reasons. Mature gas field rehabilitation must begin with main production problems identification that once recognized can be solved by remedial actions. Such corrective measures are commonly used in order to inerease the productivity of gas wells and removing restrietions on reservoir - well - surface facilities route.

Opis:
The deliverability of each gas well must be known before the gas production is started which means that the relation between gas flow rate and bottom hole drown down pressure must be known in advance. The classical, isochronal and modified isochronal tests are used for this purpose. All of these tests should be able to calculate the coefficients of deliverability equation but laminar flow coefficient in particular because the turbulent flow coefficient doesn’t change much during well production period. In the paper proposed are techniques for approximate evaluation of laminar flow coefficient without closing the well for pressure build up and for evaluation of the average reservoir pressure. The laminar flow coefficient must be known to evaluate the relation between the gas flow rate and the drown down pressure. Provided are examples of calculation procedure using each of the techniques. Data from domestic gas industry were used to demonstrate usability of proposed methods. Obtained results of calculation of laminar flow coefficients using the proposed techniques are very close to results of the standard multi rate gas well deliverability test. The proposed method for calculation of laminar flow coefficient assumes that the exponent in deliverability formula may be different than two and that the flow rates must be equal to geometric average of the proceeding and the following rate which require to use the flow rate control choke. No such tests are used in industry but among hundreds of test data the authors succeeded to find a dozen or so which accidentally satisfied this requirements. The paper also provides another simple procedures for calculation of laminar flow coefficient which do not require closing the gas well for pressure buildup.

Artykuł poświęcony jest metodom określania wydatku krytycznego w odwiertach pionowych i poziomych eksploatujących ropę naftową i gaz ziemny w stanie pseudoustalonym i nieustalonym. The transient and pseudo-steady flow is considered. Various relations used for evaluation of critical flow rate for vertical/horizontal wells proposed by several authors have been provided. Special attention has been paid to Chaperon model which is the only one having the theoretical foundation. Very simple equations which can be used for evaluation of critical flow rate, based on well-known and generally accepted equations relating the bottom hole pressure and flow rate have been proposed. Those equations relate the pressure behavior in oil and gas wells assuming the radial flow in the reservoir. Relations for vertical and horizontal wells have been provided. They can be used for approximate evaluation of critical flow rate which is the highest flow rate not causing inflow of water into oil or gas well. Of course there are discrepancies between results given by Chaperon and the proposed methods but they are not very large and are acceptable from the technical point of view. One should remember that in case of the horizontal wells the Chaperon model assumes rectangular shape of drainage area while the methods proposed in this paper use the circular drainage area and radial flow. It should be noted that the critical flow rates evaluated using various methods provided in literature and listed in this article yield results which may differ by several hundred percent for the same set of input data – this indicates the complexity of the problem of water inflow to the production wells. Equations proposed by various authors are based on the analog models or results of the laboratory experiments.

Opis:
This paper presents a technique for approximate evaluation of permeability and skin of a dry gas zone with low to moderate permeability. The herein given technique may be used for analyzing the wellhead buildup pressure data of a gas well. The results obtained using the presented technique are approximate, because of some simplifying assumptions of the mathematical model and use of the classical method of downhole pressure calculation in static gas column, which is known to be of rather moderate accuracy. In a computer program (not shown) we used the trial and error method to improve the accuracy of down hole pressure calculation and for the evaluation of the average value of gas deviation factor. In the case of thick, highly permeable gas zones, the duration of wellhead pressure build up time may be too short to obtain reliable results. The procedure of execution of the presented technique is very similar to that of the well known “slug test” method, which is used for the evaluation of permeability and skin of reservoirs which do not flow to the surface, or for analyzing the drill stem test flow period data. Contrary to “Horner type” analysis of pressure build up data, neither the flow rate of gas nor the flow duration, need not be known. The procedure of permeability calculation is shown using five examples of gas wells from the domestic oil industry. To facilitate calculations all equations were converted to the engineering system of units.
W artykule zaproponowano sposób obliczania przepuszczalności i skin efektu odwiertu gazowego o niskiej i umiarkowanej przepuszczalności warstwy gazonośnej. W programie komputerowym (niezaprezentowany) wykorzystano metodę „prób i błędów”, aby poprawić dokładność obliczeń ciśnienia dennego w odwiercie oraz oszacowania średniej wartości współczynnika ściśliwości gazu.

Opis:
During the whole period of a natural gas reservoir exploitation, from the start of production until the total reservoir energy depletion, may apear some phenomena which by their nature can affect the natural gas flow from the layer into the well. The flow resistance greeted by gas in the adjacent borehole may have multiple causes. In the majority of cases, geological elements are those which definitive influence the behaviour in exploitation of those reservoirs, so the existence of some traps due to the continuity and discontinuity character of the porous-permeable medium or to some reservoir parameters with low values, drasticaly reduces the posibility of extraction of a bigger volume of geological gas resource. Also the exploitation performances of gas reservoirs, through different wells, are major affected because of the skin factor. This produces an increased flow resistance in the adjacent zone of the borehole which is a plus to the resistance caused by the hydrodynamic imperfection to the mode and open degree of the productive layer. During the maturity stage of natural gas reservoirs, a special attention is granted to prevention and control of this unwanted effects which may affect natural gas flow from the reservoir into the well, through different operations. The stimulation of these productive layers through different operations aiming the reduction of geological nature constraints, thereby become a complex approach having the finality the increasing of exploitation performances itself. In Romgaz were tested and are used a series of stimulation technologies of the productive layers. From there historic we conclude that perforations or re-perforations using deep penetration tools, acidizing and nitrogen injection are applied with success to the productive wells. Regarding the increasing of the recovery factor for wells with high water income or for wells with mixed flow regime or with water drive regime, were successfully tested the polymer injection technology that helps to maintaining or optimising the productive wells.

Opis:
W pracy przeprowadzono ocenę efektywności technicznej i ekonomicznej zastosowania odwiertów rozgałęzionych na przykładowych złożach ropy naftowej i gazu ziemnego w Polsce.
Multilateral wells in comparison with traditional, vertical wells may bring many benefits like: increase of the reserves, significant increase of production, decrease of operational and capital costs and higher profits. But on the other hand one multilateral well requires substantially higher capital costs than single vertical well and such wells are more risky and more technically complicated. In this paper authors present evaluation of technical and economic efficiency of multilateral wells applied to exemplary oil and natural gas fields in Poland. Variant, numerical simulations were conducted in order to evaluate productivity of multilateral and vertical wells and their results were used in economic estimation.
