Opis:
Strawberry is a species sensitive to water shortages, especially during fruit growth and ripening. One method of limiting water loss in plant production involves the use of antitranspirants, which reduce plant transpiration. One method of limiting water loss in plant production involves the use of antitranspirants, which reduce plant transpiration. One of substances used for this purpose is, amongst others, natural terpene polymer di-1-p-menthene (pinolene). Research on the influence of a pinolene-containing antitranspirant (with the commercial name of Vapor Gard) on gas exchange parameters (intensity of net CO2 assimilation, intensity of transpiration, stomatal conductance for water, substomatal CO2 concentration), the water balance and the content of assimilation pigments (chlorophyll “a”, “b”, total chlorophyll, carotenoids) in the leaves of the cv. ‘Salsa’ strawberry was conducted in the years 2009–2010. The antitranspirant was used once at a concentration of 0.75% before flowering. The measurements were performed four times: before flowering (1st measurement date), when the plants were in full flowering (2nd measurement date), in the middle of the harvest season (3rd measurement date) and after the end of the harvest season (4th measurement date). Foliar application of the Vapor Gard antitranspirant decreases the intensity of strawberry transpiration without changing the CO2 assimilation activity. Plants sprayed with the tested preparation were characterised by a higher relative water content (RWC) in leaves and a higher value of the photosynthetic index of water use efficiency (WUE). The antitranspirant did not influence the content of assimilation pigments in straw-berry leaves. The values of the determined physiological features depended on the measurement date (developmental stage) of the tested strawberry cultivar.

Opis:
The present pot experiment studied the effect of different soil moisture contents (60 – 70% CWC (capillary water capacity) – control; 30 – 35% CWC – water stress) on buckwheat productivity, the gas exchange parameters and health of buckwheat nuts. It was found that water deficit affected adversely certain biometric features investigated (plant height, number of nuts per cluster) and caused a decrease in seed weight per plant. It was also shown that water stress reduced the values of the investigated gas exchange parameters (photosynthesis rate, transpiration rate, intercellular-space CO2 concentration, and stomatal conductance) relative to the control treatment. Different soil moisture contents did not have a clear effect on fungal colonization of seeds. The multiplex PCR assays did not enable the detection of the genes responsible for mycotoxin synthesis. Under water deficit conditions, an increase was found in the content of albumin and globulin fractions as well as of glutelin fractions.

Opis:
This study aimed at evaluating the physiological activity of common bean grown under the conditions of stress being induced by salinity and nitrogen deficiency and its lack in substrate. Three series of two-factorial hydroponic experiment with the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivar Basta were carried out from May to July in 2013–2014. The first experimental factor was three levels of nitrogen content in a Hoagland hydroponic medium (level 1 – a complete medium, level 2 – without 50% N, level 3 – without 100% N). The second experimental factor was three levels of medium salinity (level 1 – no NaCl addition, level 2 – 30 mM NaCl addition, level 3 – 50 mM NaCl addition). Nitrogen deficiency in a Hoagland hydroponic medium, together with increased salinity level, significantly affected the changes in the physiological parameters of the common bean cultivar Basta being tested, i.e. assimilation pigment concentration (chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b and chlorophyll-a+b and carotenoids), assimilation and transpiration intensities, and RWC (relative water content). The 50% nitrogen deficiency in medium induced a significant increase in the concentration of all assimilation pigments in common bean leaves and was by far the highest among the experimental variants being tested. A significant decrease in the content of assimilation pigments was observed in the hydroponic mediums without nitrogen and salined with 30 and 50 mM sodium chloride. The interaction of these two experimental factors being analysed, i.e. nitrogen deficiency and its lack in a Hoagland hydroponic medium and its salinity, significantly decreased the intensity of assimilation in bean leaves, while a significant increase in transpiration was observed in the variant without nitrogen and with 50 mM NaCl. The experimental variants being tested had a significant effect on the changes in leaf water balance of the common bean cultivar being tested. Salinity, in interaction with nitrogen deficiency in medium, decreased relative water content (RWC) in leaves, irrespective of their level.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the physiological response and growth of tomato transplants grown under different light treatment. During cultivation period (November - December), the transplants received supplemental artificial lighting provided by standard high-pressure sodium lamps (HPS) or high-power solid state lighting modules with red, blue and far red LEDs. Quantum irradiance in both combinations was maintained at the same level. The third group of plants (control combination) was grown under the natural light (without supplemental lighting). The following measurements were taken: leaf gas exchange (net photosynthesis and transpiration rate), leaf greenness index (relative chlorophyll content) and the most important morphological parameters (fresh weight of plant organs, leaf surface area, plant height). The results showed that supplemental illumination using LED or HPS light sources affected growth and physiological responses of tomato plants. The higher rates of gas exchange and leaf greenness index as well as enhanced growth were found in the plants grown under conditions of artificial lighting (compared to control ones). Additionally, significant differences (as a result of light spectral quality) were found between the plants lighted with HPS lamps or LED modules. LED lighting resulted in the stem elongation, greater weight of plant organs and higher chlorophyll content in the leaves. The obtained results proved that HPS lamps can be replaced by LEDs in greenhouse lighting systems. However, much work still has to be done to optimize lighting spectrum of LED modules for the cultivation of the specific crop species.

Opis:
Agricultural production is continuously constrained by number of biotic and abiotic stresses. Among all, water defi- cit is one of the major abiotic stresses, which adversely affects crop growth and productivity. Drought impairs normal growth, reduces leaf expansion, stem extension and root proliferation, disrupts water relation and water use efficiency. It interferes with the synthesis of photosynthetic pigments, resulting in the decline of light harvesting, generation of reducing power, and reduction of gas exchange and carbon fixation, which in turn, leads to the decline in plant growth and productivity water relations and re- duces water-use efficiency in plants and it finally leads to biomass and final yield reduction of crop plants. However, plants develop some mechanisms of drought tolerance, avoidance or escape. This review presents some aspects of changes in plant at morpho- logical, physiological and biochemical levels induced by drought.

Opis:
For the development of gas exchange for large diesel engines, a compromise has to be found between efficient valve-flow and the time between overhauls. On the one hand, large effective flow areas, especially during valve-overlap, are demanded. On the other hand, there are limitations of cylinder bore regarding the maximum diameter of inlet and outlet valves and the minimum distance (dead space) between valves and piston, as well as wear-related smaller seat angles. For large medium-speed diesel engines, a valve-seat angle of = ° for inlet and outlet valves is a standard application. For engine-operation with clean fuels, a valve-seat lubrication (gasoil) or smaller seat angles (natural gas) need to be applied. With this presentation, the basic influence of different valve-seat angles on the operation values and emissions will be considered for the example of the single-cylinder research engine FM16/24. Using a self-developed testbed, experimental investigations into effective flow areas as a function of valve-lift at inlet and outlet valves have to be executed. With this input, different cycle calculations including T/C have to be carried out to determine deviances in specific fuel-oil consumption, exhaust-gas temperatures, NOx emissions and air/fuel ratio. The results will be discussed critically.

ObjectivesThe physiological impact of wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), in particular filtering-face-piece 3 (FFP3) masks, has increasingly been gaining importance since the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). So far, gas exchange has been examined using transcutaneously measured partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2), ergo-spirometry and impedance cardiography.Material and MethodsIn this structured investigation, arterial blood gas analysis in a 30-year-old female resident was carried out during a 13-hour day shift on the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Innsbruck, Austria. An FFP3 mask (3MTM AuraTM) with an exhalation valve was continuously worn, except for 1 break of 20 min. Arterial blood samples were obtained before putting on the PPE, and after 5 h, 9 h and 13 h of working in the contaminated area.ResultsDuring the multi-hour wearing time, an increase in PaCO2 (the baseline value: 29.3 mm Hg, the max. value: 38.9 mm Hg) and a continuous decrease in partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2, the baseline value: 102 mm Hg, the min. value: 80.8 mm Hg) was detectable.ConclusionsAll measured values were within the normal range, but a trend towards an insufficient gas exchange could be suspected.

Opis:
In a pot experiment conducted in a phytotron, the effectiveness of foliar nutrition of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) with different magnesium salts with and without the addition of 0.5% CO(NH2)2 was studied. Magnesium was applied 3 times in the form of solutions of MgSO4 x 7H2O, Mg(NO3)2 x 6H2O, MgCl2 x 6H2O, C4H6O4Mg x 4H2O, compared to water as the control treatment. The obtained results showed that foliar feeding of spinach with inorganic magnesium salts was an efficient method for supplementing the Mg level in plants during the growing period. But the application of a metalo-organic complex in the form of magnesium acetate (C4H6O4Mg x 4H2O) at a concentration of 1.7%, in spite of a similar effect on leaf Mg content, induced phytotoxic symptoms in the form of chlorotic and necrotic spots on the leaves. The application of the solutions of inorganic magnesium salts had a significant effect, resulting in more intensive leaf gas exchange (stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis) and an increase in leaf yield. Magnesium sulphate affected the abovementioned processes in the most effective way, while magnesium acetate had a negative impact. Foliar feeding of spinach with the magnesium salts resulted in an increased leaf content of protein, chlorophyll, carotenoids, nitrates and proline, but a decrease in vitamin C content. The addition of urea to the applied magnesium salt solutions increased the plant gas exchange rates and the leaf content of protein, chlorophyll, carotenoids, nitrates and proline, but it decreased the content of vitamin C, potassium and magnesium.

The investigation aimed at examining the changes in growth and photosynthetic activity of greenhouse-grown cucumber plants subjected to various fertilization regimes. The plants were subjected to the following treatments: standard fertilization with nutrient solution (control), foliar treatments with two fertilizers (complete or nitrogenous), without any fertilization (non-fertilized plants). The plants without fertilization were supplied with water only. Lack of fertilization resulted in the reduction of net photosynthesis and leaf chlorophyll content. The lowest rates of photosynthesis and leaf chlorophyll content were observed in the non-fertilized cucumber plants. Also, retardation in plant growth was evident in this group of plants as a result of nutrient deficiency. Foliar application of complete fertilizer (Agroleaf Power Total) had a pronounced effect on photosynthesis and growth of cucumber plants. On the other hand, the plants sprayed with nitrogenous fertilizer (Basfoliar 36 Extra) assimilated with low intensity, and their vigor did not differ significantly from that recorded for plants supplied with water only (non-fertilized).

Rooeliny nienawożone zasilane były tylko wodą. Najmniejsze natężenie fotosyntezy i zawartość chlorofilu w lioeciach wykazano w przypadku roślin nienawożonych.

A research experiment was conducted in which rates of photosynthesis and transpiration were measured in leaves and ears of two winter wheat varieties grown under fungicide control conditions and without fungicide control. A LI-COR 6400 portable gas exchange system was used in the investigations. In most cases the fungicide Juwel was shown to have no effect on the gas exchange processes, whereas the other of the fungicidal agents applied – Swing – significantly decreased the gas exchange rates measured. Measurements of gas exchange parameters in ears showed that the intensity of gas exchange was low, in particular at the later stage of ear development. But the applied fungicide caused higher release of CO2 into the atmosphere than its uptake. Furthermore, the applied fungicides were found to significantly increase grain yield compared to the control treatment, both in the first and second year of the study. Among the tested varieties, ‘Nutka’ was characterized by higher productivity, in spite of lower 1000 kernel weight. However, this cultivar developed longer ears with a larger amount of grains.

The UE-imposed restrictions on the manufacture and use of plant protection chemicals necessitate screening for new substances that are more environmentally friendly. Biopreparations may constitute such a group; therefore, studies on their efficiency in the production of plant material are needed. This study evaluated the effects of two biostimulators on rhizogenesis and the gas exchange rate (respiration, photosynthesis, transpiration) of stem cuttings of dogwood (Cornus alba) as compared to conventional treatments with a rooting powder containing 2% auxin IBA and with aqueous IBA solution. Both biopreparations enhanced rhizogenesis; their efficiency varied depending on the cultivar, biostimulator applied, and the number of treatments. There was no relationship between rhizogenesis and physiological parameters tested. The experiments demonstrated that at least some biopreparations have potential in commercial production but their effectiveness may be different in different species and under different conditions.
