Opis:
In this work bovine bone powder samples were irradiated at three different dose rates of 100, 260 and 630 kGy/min for the absorbed dose range of 3 to 110 kGy, using 10 MeV electron beam radiation. The samples were subjected to EPR measurement at room temperature in air. The variation of EPR signal intensities were constructed and evaluated base on quantitative data related to the absorbed doses. Moreover, they were compared with the obtained results from the samples irradiated by a 60Co gamma-ray source with a dose rate of 2.65 kGy/h. The time and temperature effects on the EPR response of this dosimeter were also studied. The results indicated that the bone sample was a suitable dosimeter especially for electron beam at high doses.

Opis:
This study presented a self-designed prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) model and used Fluka simulation to simulate the heavy metals (Mn, Cu, Hg, Ni, Cr, Pb) in soil samples. The relationship between the prompt gamma-ray yield of each heavy metal and soil thickness, content of heavy metals in the soil, and source distance was obtained. Simulation results show that the prompt gamma-ray yield of each heavy metal increases with the increase in soil thickness and reaches saturation at 18 cm. The greater the proportion of heavy metals in the soil, the greater the prompt gamma-ray yield. The highest content is approximately 3%, and the change in distance between the neutron source and soil sample does not affect the prompt gamma-ray yield of heavy metals.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to investigate the thermal neutron measurement capability of a CdZnTe detector irradiated in a mixed gamma-neutron radiation fi eld. A CdZnTe detector was irradiated in one of the irradiation tubes of a 241Am-Be source unit to determine the sensitivity factors of the detector in terms of peak count rate (counts per second [cps]) per neutron flux (in square centimeters per second) [cps/neutron•cm–2•s–1]. The CdZnTe detector was covered in a 1-mm-thick cadmium (Cd) cylindrical box to completely absorb incoming thermal neutrons via 113Cd(n,γ) capture reactions. To achieve, this Cd-covered CdZnTe detector was placed in a well-thermalized neutron fi eld (f-ratio = 50.9 ± 1.3) in the irradiation tube of the 241Am-Be neutron source. The gamma-ray spectra were acquired, and the most intense gamma-ray peak at 558 keV (0.74 γ/n) was evaluated to estimate the thermal neutron fl ux. The epithermal component was also estimated from the bare CdZnTe detector irradiation because the epithermal neutron cutoff energy is about 0.55 eV at the 1-mm-thick Cd filter. A high-density polyethylene moderating cylinder box can also be fi tted into the Cd fi lter box to enhance thermal sensitivity because of moderation of the epithermal neutron component. Neutron detection sensitivity was determined from the measured count rates from the 558 keV photopeak, using the measured neutron fluxes at different irradiation positions. The results indicate that the CdZnTe detector can serve as a neutron detector in mixed gamma-neutron radiation fields, such as reactors, neutron generators, linear accelerators, and isotopic neutron sources. New thermal neutron filters, such as Gd and Tb foils, can be tested instead of the Cd filter due to its serious gamma-shielding effect.

Opis:
With emphasis being placed on the re-examining of mature petroleum basins and reduction of the negative impact of the industry on the environment, the use of archival data in geological exploration is essential. This is especially important in regions where the old, Soviet-type tools were used in the past and which are now using modern, western logging equipment. The application of archival geological, geochemical and geophysical data allows recognition of reservoir formations without the use of modern measurements. For the purpose of this research, Jurassic sandy rocks identified in the archival borehole Z-GN4 were analysed. They appear to be a perfect target for further petroleum and geothermal exploration in the Polish Basin; however, variable mineral composition and diagenetic features can cause difficulties while estimating their reservoir properties. The difference between gamma ray and spontaneous potential shale volume parameter (clay difference) was applied together with gamma ray measurement to determine the impact of primary and diagenetic features on each sandy petrofacies. Based on an integration of detailed petrographic analysis of available core samples from Z-GN4 borehole with archival borehole logs, four different sandy petrofacies were distinguished. Moreover, deep resistivity and sonic logs were used to highlight the carbonate-cemented intervals. This study shows how the application of petrofacies analysis in archival datasets can support the interpretation of uncored intervals and upgrade the level of reservoir characterization.

Opis:
The Carboniferous sandstone of the Dęblin Formation is one of the targets for the petroleum industry in the Lublin Basin in southeastern Poland. The formation's primary and diagenetic composition makes it difficult to estimate its reservoir properties. Based on a detailed analysis of core and petrographic samples, normalization of gamma-ray and density logs was made with respect to the grain-framework of the rock. Recounted logs were used for distinguishing 4 different sandstone petrofacies. For these petrofacies, ranges of gamma-ray and bulk density values were determined and the impact of primary and diagenetic mineral composition was estimated. The application of this petrofacies method can upgrade the level of reservoir characterization and support the interpretation of uncored intervals.

A Large Sample Neutron Activation Analysis (LSNAA) facility is under development at the GRR-1 research reactor, NCSR "Demokritos". The LSNAA facility design incorporates sample irradiation in the reactor graphite thermal neutron column and subsequent measurement of the activity induced in a gamma spectroscopy system with gamma ray transmission measurement options included. The Monte Carlo neutron and photon transport code MCNP-4C was used to model the facility. Appropriate correction factors accounting for neutron field perturbation during sample irradiation and high-purity germanium detector efficiency for the volume source were derived. The results of the computations were experimentally verified by measurements for a set of known materials. The LSNAA facility will be used to perform multi-element, non-destructive, contamination-free analysis of large volume samples with high sensitivity and excellent sampling. End-users of the facility will be archaeological, environmental, bio-medical research laboratories and industry.

Breast cancer remains one of the major causes of mortality among female cancer patients. This fact caused a spark in the medical field, which in turn helped to improve the diagnostic and treatment of breast cancer patients over the years making this field always active with new ideas and innovative methods. In our study, a new method was explored using an energy-resolving detection system made from a NaI (Tl) scintillation detector to detect the gamma photons from an Am-241 radiation source to try and construct an image by scanning the American College of Radiology (ACR) mammography phantom. In addition to the experimental work, a Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE) toolkit was used to investigate more complex options to improve the image quality of mammographic systems, which is limited by the experimental setup. From the experimental setup, the researchers were able to construct an image using the 26.3 keV and the 59.5 keV energy photons, to show the largest size tumour (12 mm) in the ACR phantom. With an improved setup in the simulation environment, the majority of the ACR phantom tumours was visible using both energy windows from the 26.3 keV and the 59.5 keV, where the 26.3 keV yielded better quality images showing four tumours compared to three when using 59.5 keV. The simulation results were promising; however, several improvements need to be incorporated into the experimental work so that the system can generate high-resolution mammographic images similar to the ones obtained by the GATE simulation setup.

Opis:
The research was performed on seven samples of Miocene rocks collected from the core. The selected material was represented by sandstones, mudstones and claystones. The main goal of the work was to separate the silt fraction and to determine its impact on the level of radioactivity of the Miocene rocks of the Carpathian Foredeep. In this study, the silt fraction separation method developed in the Well Logging Department of INiG – PIB was used. Wentworth classification was used to determine the size of the silt, assuming its range from 4 to 63 µm. The selected rock material was prepared in several stages using the methods of freezing, sieving, centrifugation and sedimentation. Additional tests, including mineralogical XRD, chemical XRF and matrix density measurements were performed to determine the rock types and their properties. A number of radiometric tests were performed to determine the content of natural radioactive elements. The analyses were carried out on a small number of tests because of their long preparation and limited material availability. Reliable determination of the parameters of individual grain fractions required verification and improvement of the applied research methods. Radiometric measurements determining the natural content of potassium 40K, uranium 238U and thorium 232Th were carried out in the RT-50 equipped with a three-inch NaI(Tl) crystal. In the first place, standard analyses were conducted for dried and crushed samples of Miocene claystones, mudstones and sandstones. Further measurements were made on the separated silt fraction and in the case of one sample, also on the remaining fractions (clay and sand). In this case, the analyses were carried out repeatedly using a new procedure enabling the determination of radioactive elements in low-mass samples. The results of the work allowed approximate determination of the natural gamma radioactivity of the silt. An important conclusion is that, silt is no more radioactive than the other components of the rock. This paper also attempted the estimation of the impact of heavy mineral content on the natural radioactivity of the Miocene rocks. For tests purpose, minerals with a density above 2.85 g/cm3 were separated from the rock samples and a series of analyses were carried out once again. The obtained results were minimally understated but close enough to the samples before separation. It can be concluded that the heavy minerals in the tested samples do not affect the total radioactivity of the rocks in the research area.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono możliwości prowadzenia pomiarów chemicznych z zastosowaniem przenośnego spektrometru fluorescencji rentgenowskiej z dyspersją energii EDXRF w atmosferze helu. Metodyka badawcza wraz z tworzeniem modeli i interpretacją danych powstała w oparciu o zastosowanie aparatu XRF firmy Bruker, model Tracer 5g. W przypadku P4 dysponowano dokładnymi pomiarami laboratoryjnymi ICP-MS (ang.
In the paper, author presented the possibility of conducting chemical measurements in a helium atmosphere using a portable Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometer (EDXRF). The methodology, model creation and data interpretation were based on the Tracer 5g XRF (Bruker) application. Measurements in a helium atmosphere enable the reduction of detection limits for light elements, including the determination of sodium (Na) and magnesium (Mg), as well as elements applied in the spectral gamma-ray profiling range: potassium (K), uranium (U) and thorium (Th). One of the new measurement procedure aspects is the preparation of pellets using a hydraulic press with a pressure of up to 25 tons. Measurements with helium flow can only be performed on a consolidated material (solid rock, drill core, or pellet). The material for the research was taken from the cores, then quartered and divided into individual analyses. The results of the XRF analyses obtained with the helium flow method were compared to measurements made with standard XRF equipment, chemical laboratory tests, the results of XRD mineral analyses, and tests of natural gamma radioactivity. XRF analyses without the possibility of conducting measurements in a helium atmosphere were performed with the Titan S1 apparatus (Bruker). The tests were carried out on rock samples from two boreholes, P4 (19 samples) and J1 (11 samples). In P4, precise laboratory measurements ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry), ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry) and XRD results were available, while in the J1, radiometric and mineral tests were performed. Feldspars and dolomites were present in the samples from the J1 borehole, which made it possible to test the construction of models incorporating these minerals in relation to sodium and magnesium. The final part of the work presents correlation diagrams for selected, most essential elements forming the rock matrix, mineral and chemical models built on their basis and correlation diagrams for gamma spectrometric measurements.

Opis:
The void fraction is one of the most important parameters characterizing a multiphase flow. The prediction of the performance of any system operating with more than single phase relies on our knowledge and ability to measure the void fraction. In this work, a validated simulation study was performed in order to predict the void fraction independent of the flow pattern in gas-liquid two-phase flows using a gamma ray 60Co source and just one scintillation detector with the help of an artificial neural network (ANN) model of radial basis function (RBF). Three used inputs of ANN include a registered count under Compton continuum and counts under full energy peaks of 1173 and 1333 keV. The output is a void fraction percentage. Applying this methodology, the percentage of void fraction independent of the flow pattern of a gas-liquid two-phase flow was estimated with a mean relative error less than 1.17%. Although the error obtained in this study is almost close to those obtained in other similar works, only one detector was used, while in the previous studies at least two detectors were employed. Advantages of using fewer detectors are: cost reduction and system simplification.
