Opis:
Radioisotope applications in industrial process inspection and evaluation using gamma-ray emitters provide otherwise unavailable information. Offering alternative gamma-ray sources can support the technology by complementing sources’ availability and radiation safety. This work proposes to replace gamma-ray from radioisotopes with prompt gamma-ray from the interaction of neutrons with stable isotopes injected into the industrial process or with the structural material of the industrial process equipment. Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code (MCNP5) was used to simulate the irradiation of two-phase fl ow pipes by 252Cf neutron source. Two simulations were run for each pipe, with and without mixing the liquid phase with the stable isotope 157Gd. The detected gamma-ray spectra were analysed, and images of the two phases inside the pipes were produced. The images were compared to images obtained from simulations of gamma transmission measurement using 60Co. Furthermore, results for prompt gamma computed tomography (CT) were presented and discussed. The studies’ outcomes indicate the potential of prompt gamma-ray to carry out the sealed sources applications of gamma transmission measurements and imaging.

Industrial automation systems with radioactive sources are applied in almost all branches of industry, especially in the mining and energy ones. They are very easy to apply and strongly reliable. Radioactive sources are used in measuring the flow, levels of media in containers, density, mass and ash content in coal. These measurements relay on measurement of gamma- -ray absorption which is the matter of concern. After appropriate calibration of such a measurement system, one is able to obtain relationship between absorption of radiation and mass or ash content. The major difficulty is additional absorption in conveyor belts. This additional absorption in belts usually is non-negligible. The presented work describes the influence of additional absorption in conveyor belts on the results of measurements which are performed by use of the devices with radioactive sources.

Opis:
Of major concern are the self-absorption correction factors Cs in precise gamma-ray spectrometry of environmental samples. The overview of Cs determination methods (experimental, Monte Carlo calculations, analytical function application) is presented. Among several available methods, the author chose the one proposed by Debertin where the uncertainty level of Cs correction factor is 1÷2%. The point-like detector model is assumed whilst its efficiency is taken to be proportional to the weighted sum (integral) of the number of photons coming from sample volume elements. Computer program was developed to support the computation of Cs by the Debertin's method for samples in cylindrical geometries and Marinelli beakers. The input data are sample dimensions, density and the mass attenuation coefficient. The Cs uncertainty due to an arbitrarily chosen position of a point-like detector would not exceed 1% for the considered photon energies and the sample density range. Utilising this computer program, the relationships Cs(E,ń) were obtained for the applied geometries and a SiO2 matrix to support routine measurements. The SiO2 matrix is widely encountered in environmental spectrometry. This relationship was derived by fitting the computed data with the function Cs(E,ń) in the form proposed by Bolivar. It was shown that while handling this function to samples with the H2O matrix, the error involved in estimations would not exceed 3%.

The multi-phase flow measurements are very important tasks in many areas of industrial processes applications. One of them is undersea exploration of oil in the petroleum industry. The submitted paper presents application of DECART tomograph designed and built in Lodz University of Technology - together with combined measurements of signals acquired from gamma ray measurement system. Use of all measuring modalities allowed for performing measurements of a flow composed of sea water, oil and gas. The paper presents theoretical principles applied to design multimodality tomograph and results of experiments performed in the University of Bergen. Measurement confirmed that multi-modality approach allows giving fast and reliable on-line results of measurements of composition of multi-phase flow. Applied algorithms allowed to speed up on-line measurements and presenting results in a form required in industrial applications. The derived conclusions can be used as guidelines for preparation of industrial applicable construction of tomograph.
Pomiary przepływów wielofazowych są szeroko wykorzystywane w wielu procesach przemysłowych. Jednym z nich jest przemysł petrochemiczny, w szczególności dziedzina eksploatacji podwodnych złóż ropy naftowej. W artykule zostało przedstawione zastosowanie tomografu DECART - zaprojektowanego i zbudowanego w Instytucie Informatyki Stosowanej Politechniki Łódzkiej.

The paper outlines the methodology used in the Gamma-Ray Spectrometry Laboratory for high-precision measurements of radionuclide activity concentrations in environmental samples. The Laboratory equipment includes a semiconductor detector HPGe with a 42% relative efficiency. The detector is placed in a Pb housing made of bricks 10 cm in thickness. Three measurement geometries are considered: Marinelli beakers 710 cm3 in volume and two cylindrical geometries 121 and 48 cm3 in volume. In the efficiency calibration (E = 32 division sign 1836 keV) mixed gamma standard solutions were used. Obtained experimental efficiency values epsilon were fitted with two quadratic functions. The junction point is that equivalent to 200 keV. Uncertainty of the calibration curve is 2% for E > 200 keV. The relationship between the total efficiency and the energy epsilon t(E) was also found for energies E = 33 division sign 1250 keV. Self-absorption correction factors Cs are calculated by the method proposed by K. Debertin, the uncertainty level being 1 division sign 2% for E > 100 keV. These correction factors are calculated by an original computer program. Coincidence summing correction factors Cc for the selected nuclides are derived using the ETNA computer program, basing on the relationships epsilon(E) and epsilon t(E). Minimum detectable activity (MDA) for selected nuclides encountered in environmental samples was determined for the water matrix. The methodology used was successfully verified in the course of international intercomparison measurements.

In this work bovine bone powder samples were irradiated at three different dose rates of 100, 260 and 630 kGy/min for the absorbed dose range of 3 to 110 kGy, using 10 MeV electron beam radiation. The samples were subjected to EPR measurement at room temperature in air. The variation of EPR signal intensities were constructed and evaluated base on quantitative data related to the absorbed doses. Moreover, they were compared with the obtained results from the samples irradiated by a 60Co gamma-ray source with a dose rate of 2.65 kGy/h. The time and temperature effects on the EPR response of this dosimeter were also studied. The results indicated that the bone sample was a suitable dosimeter especially for electron beam at high doses.

Following the accident at the Daiichi Fukushima nuclear power plant in 2011, a vast number of Pacific seawater samples from many locations far from Fukushima have been collected by Japanese investigators. Due to dilution, the activities of radionuclides from North Pacifi c seawater samples are very low, which calls for extraordinary measures when being measured. This study focuses on the metrological aspects of the gamma-ray spectrometry measurements performed on such samples in two underground laboratories; at HADES (by JRC- -IRMM in Belgium), and at Ogoya (by Kanazawa University in Japan). Due to many samples and long measurement times, all available HPGe detectors needed to be employed. In addition to single coaxial detectors, this involved multidetector systems and well detectors. Optimization of detection limits for different radionuclides and detectors was performed using Monte Carlo simulations.

Recently the use of organic fertilizers is increased to raise the agricultural products and reclaim land for cultivation in the world. These fertilizers contain many natural radionuclides, such as Uranium series (U-238), Thorium series (Th-232), and Potassium (K-40). Organic fertilizers can be considered as one of the natural sources of radiation in the soil. The specific activities of natural radionuclides U-238, Th-232, and K-40 in organic fertilizers were measured using a gamma-ray spectrometer NaI(Tl) detector and Rad Eye-B20 portable detector. Results of NaI(Tl) detector showed that the mean value of activity concentrations of U-238, Th-232, and K-40 was 2.101 Bq/kg, 0.329 Bq/kg, and 95.791 Bq/kg, respectively, were less than the recommended limits. The mean value of radiometric parameters Raeq, Hin, Hex, Iγ, Iɑ, DƔ, and AEDE were also calculated (9.398 Bq/kg, 0.0355, 0.0249, 0.037, 0.0123, 4.959 nGy/h, 0.0065 mSv/y). But the maximum and minimum values of activity concentration were found in sample O.2 and O.4, respectively. The results of Rad Eye-B20 portable detector showed that the maximum (0.415 Bq/cm2, 0.17 µSv/h, and 1.055 Cps) and the minimum (0.255 Bq/cm2, 0.13 µSv/h, and 0.485 Cps) values of surface contamination, Dose Rate, and General Count Rate per second were respectively found in samples O.2 and O.4; all they were slightly higher than background measurements (0.21 Bq/cm2, 0.12 µSv/h, and 0.44 Cps). Measurements of NaI(Tl) detector were matched and confirmed by Rad Eye-B20 detector. All measurements of the radiological hazard to consumers were less than the recommended limits.

Breast cancer remains one of the major causes of mortality among female cancer patients. This fact caused a spark in the medical field, which in turn helped to improve the diagnostic and treatment of breast cancer patients over the years making this field always active with new ideas and innovative methods. In our study, a new method was explored using an energy-resolving detection system made from a NaI (Tl) scintillation detector to detect the gamma photons from an Am-241 radiation source to try and construct an image by scanning the American College of Radiology (ACR) mammography phantom. In addition to the experimental work, a Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE) toolkit was used to investigate more complex options to improve the image quality of mammographic systems, which is limited by the experimental setup. From the experimental setup, the researchers were able to construct an image using the 26.3 keV and the 59.5 keV energy photons, to show the largest size tumour (12 mm) in the ACR phantom. With an improved setup in the simulation environment, the majority of the ACR phantom tumours was visible using both energy windows from the 26.3 keV and the 59.5 keV, where the 26.3 keV yielded better quality images showing four tumours compared to three when using 59.5 keV. The simulation results were promising; however, several improvements need to be incorporated into the experimental work so that the system can generate high-resolution mammographic images similar to the ones obtained by the GATE simulation setup.

This study presented a self-designed prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) model and used Fluka simulation to simulate the heavy metals (Mn, Cu, Hg, Ni, Cr, Pb) in soil samples. The relationship between the prompt gamma-ray yield of each heavy metal and soil thickness, content of heavy metals in the soil, and source distance was obtained. Simulation results show that the prompt gamma-ray yield of each heavy metal increases with the increase in soil thickness and reaches saturation at 18 cm. The greater the proportion of heavy metals in the soil, the greater the prompt gamma-ray yield. The highest content is approximately 3%, and the change in distance between the neutron source and soil sample does not affect the prompt gamma-ray yield of heavy metals.

Opis:
The elemental composition of terrigenous sediments is extremely important for interpreting the depositional conditions of sedimentary basins especially when traditional data are not available or insufficient. For the first time in the published literature, the elemental composition of the Lower Cretaceous Weald Basin (south-east England) is presented via X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Spectral Gamma-ray (SGR) methods. The concentrations of Zr, Cr, Ni, Rb, and Sr in varying quantities suggest that the sediments may have been sourced from a stable craton while the enriched redox-sensitive elements such as Mo and Co confirm the presence of anoxic and reducing conditions at the sites of deposition. The spectral gamma-ray data show that the sandstone facies are more radioactive than the adjacent mudstone and shale and this trend is consistent with a freshwater origin. The higher quantity of thorium in relation to uranium indicates humid and hot palaeoclimatic conditions at the source areas that favoured intense weathering. The results of these analyses reinforce the importance of the geochemistry of sedimentary rocks as useful tools for understanding the depositional conditions of sedimentary basins.

Opis:
With emphasis being placed on the re-examining of mature petroleum basins and reduction of the negative impact of the industry on the environment, the use of archival data in geological exploration is essential. This is especially important in regions where the old, Soviet-type tools were used in the past and which are now using modern, western logging equipment. The application of archival geological, geochemical and geophysical data allows recognition of reservoir formations without the use of modern measurements. For the purpose of this research, Jurassic sandy rocks identified in the archival borehole Z-GN4 were analysed. They appear to be a perfect target for further petroleum and geothermal exploration in the Polish Basin; however, variable mineral composition and diagenetic features can cause difficulties while estimating their reservoir properties. The difference between gamma ray and spontaneous potential shale volume parameter (clay difference) was applied together with gamma ray measurement to determine the impact of primary and diagenetic features on each sandy petrofacies. Based on an integration of detailed petrographic analysis of available core samples from Z-GN4 borehole with archival borehole logs, four different sandy petrofacies were distinguished. Moreover, deep resistivity and sonic logs were used to highlight the carbonate-cemented intervals. This study shows how the application of petrofacies analysis in archival datasets can support the interpretation of uncored intervals and upgrade the level of reservoir characterization.

Neptunium-237 samples were irradiated in a spallation neutron fi eld produced in accelerator-driven system (ADS) setup QUINTA. Five experiments were carried out on the accelerators at the JINR in Dubna – one in carbon (C6+), three in deuteron, and one in a proton beam. The energy in carbon was 24 GeV, in deuteron 2, 4 and 8 GeV, respectively, and 660 MeV in the proton beam. The incineration study method was based on gamma-ray spectrometry. During the analysis of the spectra several fi ssion products and one actinide were identifi ed. Fission product activities yielded the number of fi ssions. The actinide (Np-238), a result of neutron capture by Np-237, yielded the number of captures. The main goal of this work was to fi nd out if and how the incineration rate depended on parameters of the accelerator beam.

Opis:
The soil water retention curve (SWRC) represents a fundamental part of the characterization of the soil hydraulic properties. The establishment of SWRC is usually time-consuming and presents several problems such as the difficulty of a correct judgment of the time of equilibrium. This work presents a new methodology that involves gammaray beam attenuation technique associated with the traditional pressure chambers, having as objective the more precise judgment of the time to attain equilibrium. The gamma-ray source used has an activity of 3.7 GBq consisting of 241Am, with peak energy of 59.54 keV. For the determination of retention curves using the gamma-ray attenuation technique, an acrylic pressure chamber was projected and constructed to be positioned between the source and detector with the gamma-ray beam crossing the center of the chamber and the soil sample during water extraction. The proposed technique allowed, through a specifically elaborated software for data acquisition, to evaluate with precision the exact instant of the equilibrium and, consequently, to obtain the right moment to change the chamber pressure to a new desired level, leading to a reduction of the time required for the whole retention curve determination. The results obtained show that the gamma-ray attenuation technique can be very useful as an auxiliary tool to evaluate SWRC, utilizing the Richards chamber.

Cosmogenic radionuclides were measured in two specimens of the Sołtmany chondrite (L6) that fell on April 30, 2011. The first fragment (154.9 g) was measured 12 days after the fall and the second piece (120 g), 53 days after the fall. Both fragments were measured by means of non-destructive gamma ray spectroscopy. The first specimen was examined with an ultra-low background high purity germanium (HPGe) detector in a deep underground laboratory. A standard low-background HPGe detector was used to examine the second fragment in a ground level laboratory. Twelve cosmogenic nuclides were detected in the activity range of 0.030 m・Bq g–1 until 1.5 m・Bq g–1 Their activities place constraints on the exposure history of the meteorite and reflect the effect of solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays during the solar maximum. On the activities of expected radionuclides 60 Co (< 0.0075 m・Bq g–1) and 44 Ti (< 0.023 m・Bq g–1) only upper limits could be given. Sołtmany is part of a group of only 14 meteorites where 52 Mn (5.591 d half life) could be determined.

Gamma-ray beam attenuation is a non-invasive technique that permits analysis of soil porosity without disturbing the region of interest of the core sample. The technique has as additional advantage to allow measurements point by point on a millimetric scale in contrast to other methodologies that are invasive and analyze the soil properties in the bulk sample volume. Soil porosity can be used as an important parameter to quantify soil structural damages, which affect soil aeration, water movement and retention. In this study, porosities of three soils different in texture were measured at various positions in order to analyze the impact of the sampling procedure on the structure of each particular soil texture. The gamma-ray attenuation system consisted of an 241Am radioactive source having an activity of 3.7 GBq, collimated with cylindrical lead collimators of 2 mm diameter. The results obtained show the presence of dense regions near the edges of samples and that different soil textures can suffer distinct deformations at sampling.

Opis:
The research was performed on seven samples of Miocene rocks collected from the core. The selected material was represented by sandstones, mudstones and claystones. The main goal of the work was to separate the silt fraction and to determine its impact on the level of radioactivity of the Miocene rocks of the Carpathian Foredeep. In this study, the silt fraction separation method developed in the Well Logging Department of INiG – PIB was used. Wentworth classification was used to determine the size of the silt, assuming its range from 4 to 63 µm. The selected rock material was prepared in several stages using the methods of freezing, sieving, centrifugation and sedimentation. Additional tests, including mineralogical XRD, chemical XRF and matrix density measurements were performed to determine the rock types and their properties. A number of radiometric tests were performed to determine the content of natural radioactive elements. The analyses were carried out on a small number of tests because of their long preparation and limited material availability. Reliable determination of the parameters of individual grain fractions required verification and improvement of the applied research methods. Radiometric measurements determining the natural content of potassium 40K, uranium 238U and thorium 232Th were carried out in the RT-50 equipped with a three-inch NaI(Tl) crystal. In the first place, standard analyses were conducted for dried and crushed samples of Miocene claystones, mudstones and sandstones. Further measurements were made on the separated silt fraction and in the case of one sample, also on the remaining fractions (clay and sand). In this case, the analyses were carried out repeatedly using a new procedure enabling the determination of radioactive elements in low-mass samples. The results of the work allowed approximate determination of the natural gamma radioactivity of the silt. An important conclusion is that, silt is no more radioactive than the other components of the rock. This paper also attempted the estimation of the impact of heavy mineral content on the natural radioactivity of the Miocene rocks. For tests purpose, minerals with a density above 2.85 g/cm3 were separated from the rock samples and a series of analyses were carried out once again. The obtained results were minimally understated but close enough to the samples before separation. It can be concluded that the heavy minerals in the tested samples do not affect the total radioactivity of the rocks in the research area.

We present in this work a detailed design of a small low-pressure chamber outfitted with a ceramic porous plate for evaluating the soil water retention curve (SWRC) in the water potential range from 0 to -100 kPa. The chamber is made of acrylic and permits the use of one unique soil sample each time. The use of this chamber allows quick measurements of soil moisture using nuclear (based on gamma-ray attenuation) and conventional methods and SWRC determinations made with the designed chamber are in agreement with those obtained using a commercial low-pressure chamber. The chamber was designed especially for testing the use of the nuclear method as an auxiliary tool for SWRC determinations but it can be easily adapted for routine investigations and a practical alternative for the conventional SWRC method.

The Carboniferous sandstone of the Dęblin Formation is one of the targets for the petroleum industry in the Lublin Basin in southeastern Poland. The formation's primary and diagenetic composition makes it difficult to estimate its reservoir properties. Based on a detailed analysis of core and petrographic samples, normalization of gamma-ray and density logs was made with respect to the grain-framework of the rock. Recounted logs were used for distinguishing 4 different sandstone petrofacies. For these petrofacies, ranges of gamma-ray and bulk density values were determined and the impact of primary and diagenetic mineral composition was estimated. The application of this petrofacies method can upgrade the level of reservoir characterization and support the interpretation of uncored intervals.

Opis:
The void fraction is one of the most important parameters characterizing a multiphase flow. The prediction of the performance of any system operating with more than single phase relies on our knowledge and ability to measure the void fraction. In this work, a validated simulation study was performed in order to predict the void fraction independent of the flow pattern in gas-liquid two-phase flows using a gamma ray 60Co source and just one scintillation detector with the help of an artificial neural network (ANN) model of radial basis function (RBF). Three used inputs of ANN include a registered count under Compton continuum and counts under full energy peaks of 1173 and 1333 keV. The output is a void fraction percentage. Applying this methodology, the percentage of void fraction independent of the flow pattern of a gas-liquid two-phase flow was estimated with a mean relative error less than 1.17%. Although the error obtained in this study is almost close to those obtained in other similar works, only one detector was used, while in the previous studies at least two detectors were employed. Advantages of using fewer detectors are: cost reduction and system simplification.

Wykonane wykresy krzyżowe na podstawie pomiarów sondą neutronową i gamma, gęstościową i akustyczną potwierdzają możliwość określenia zarówno typu zailenia, jak i poprawnej porowatości oraz udziału frakcji piaskowcowej (tzw. net to gross) w warstwach złożowych. Wykres krzyżowy oparty na pomiarach gamma i oporności pozwala na rozdzielenie warstw nasyconych wodą i gazem.
The analysis of effects of shale distribution and clay volume in reservoir formations on well logging curves is presented in this paper. A conception given originally by Thomas & Stieber (1975) was applied into modelling the response of well logging tools for an assumed shaly-sand model. Results of calculations were compared with logs registered in the J4 well which drilled the autochthonous Miocene deposits. Different crossplots obtained based on Gamma Ray and Neutron and Density or Acoustic logs prove that there is a possibility to determine porosity, shale distribution and sand volume (net to gross) in the reservoir horizons.

Assessment of changes in porosity (ö) along depth for soils with surface crusting is difficult because conventional soil physical investigation tools are destructive and usually require a long period of time for preparation and analysis of the samples. Computed tomography (CT) has frequently been used as a method to evaluate soil structure in a nondestructive, sensitive, and rapid manner. CT data can be used for measuring at a millimetric scale changes in ö along depth for soils with surface crusting. The main objective of this work was to investigate the sensibility of the gamma-ray CT to assess soil structural changes along depth in samples presenting structural crust. CT images were taken with a first generation scanner of 1.14 mm resolution along eight different soil layers within the 0 28 mm depth. Porosity increased along depth up to the 14 17.5 mm layer. Through the analysis of the ö distribution of each layer it was possible to show that the sealed surface layer presented ö values of approximately 30%, while the other layers were greater than 30% up to 60% (macropore regions). The sealing crust thickness was estimated to be in the range of 2.3 3.5 mm.

Handheld gamma-ray spectrometry (hGRS) is a valuable method for geological studies. It may be applied in correlations between well-logging and outcrop strata, enhance interpretations of sedimentological data, prospect radiogenic ores and geothermal resources, and identify radiogenic hazards for society. This paper aims to review and popularize one of the research methods based on a mobile device (hGRS) equipped with a BGO (bismuth germanium oxide) scintillator. The general concept of the research method is presented in this paper. The method's perspectives and limits based on reviewed literature. Advantages of hGRS include, e.g., low cost, short data acquisition time, the possibility of studying natural exposures, and a broad set of research applications. The main disadvantages comprise relatively modest resolution of acquired data and their difficult interpretation in complex geological formations. The review is backed by sample measurements performed in various geological exposures at Bornholm Island (Baltic Sea). Measurements comprised igneous rocks exposed in several quarries and sedimentary profiles near Liesti Valley and Muleby.

Liquid-gas flows in pipelines appear in many industrial processes, e.g. in the nuclear, mining, and oil industry. The gamma-absorption technique is one of the methods that can be successfully applied to study such flows. This paper presents the use of the gamma-absorption method to determine the water-air flow parameters in a horizontal pipeline. Three flow types were studied in this work: plug, transitional plug-bubble, and bubble one. In the research, a radiometric set consisting of two Am-241 sources and two NaI(TI) scintillation detectors have been applied. Based on the analysis of the signals from both scintillation detectors, the gas phase velocity was calculated using the cross-correlation method (CCM). The signal from one detector was used to determine the void fraction and to recognise the flow regime. In the latter case, a Multi-Layer Perceptron-type artificial neural network (ANN) was applied. To reduce the number of signal features, the principal component analysis (PCA) was used. The expanded uncertainties of gas velocity and void fraction obtained for the flow types studied in this paper did not exceed 4.3% and 7.4% respectively. All three types of analyzed flows were recognised with 100% accuracy. Results of the experiments confirm the usefulness of the gamma-ray absorption method in combination with radiometric signal analysis by CCM and ANN with PCA for comprehensive analysis of liquid-gas flow in the pipeline.

Based on spectral gamma ray and Litho-Density Logs measurements, the quantitative concentration of radioactive elements including uranium, thorium and radioactive isotope of potassium (40K) was evaluated. These data along with bulk density were subsequently used to calculate the radioactive heat. The calculations were performed for boreholes B-2, B-3, B-4 and B-8, located in central part of the reef. Increased values of A appeared characteristic for the Main Dolomite, Zechstein limestone and Carboniferous deposits with high share of shales.

One of the non-intrusive and accurate methods of measuring void fraction in two-phase gas liquid pipe flows is the use of the gamma-transmission void fraction measurement technique. The goal of this study is to describe low-energy gamma-ray densitometry using an 241Am source for the determination of void fraction and flow regime in water/gas pipes. The MCNP code was utilized to simulate electron and photon transport through materials with various geometries. Then, a neural network was used to convert multi-beam gamma-ray spectra into a classification of the flow regime and void fraction. The simulations cover the full range of void fraction with Bubbly, Annular and Droplet flows. By using simulation data as input to the neural networks, the void fraction was determined with an error less than 3% regardless of the flow regime. It has thus been shown that multi-beam gamma-ray densitometers with a detector response examined by neural networks can analyze a two-phase flow with high accuracy.

To achieve, this Cd-covered CdZnTe detector was placed in a well-thermalized neutron fi eld (f-ratio = 50.9 ± 1.3) in the irradiation tube of the 241Am-Be neutron source. The gamma-ray spectra were acquired, and the most intense gamma-ray peak at 558 keV (0.74 γ/n) was evaluated to estimate the thermal neutron fl ux. The epithermal component was also estimated from the bare CdZnTe detector irradiation because the epithermal neutron cutoff energy is about 0.55 eV at the 1-mm-thick Cd filter. A high-density polyethylene moderating cylinder box can also be fi tted into the Cd fi lter box to enhance thermal sensitivity because of moderation of the epithermal neutron component. Neutron detection sensitivity was determined from the measured count rates from the 558 keV photopeak, using the measured neutron fluxes at different irradiation positions. The results indicate that the CdZnTe detector can serve as a neutron detector in mixed gamma-neutron radiation fields, such as reactors, neutron generators, linear accelerators, and isotopic neutron sources. New thermal neutron filters, such as Gd and Tb foils, can be tested instead of the Cd filter due to its serious gamma-shielding effect.

Opis:
Continuous monitoring of natural gamma radiation in air has been carried out, during December 2014 – January 2018, with 1-min cyclic measurement in Prague, Czech Republic using a NaI(Tl) probe. The 214Bi/214Pb ratio as a tracer in rainwater has been investigated to study its variations related to both the ambient dose equivalent rate per hour and the amount of rainfall. A hybrid methodology for time series analysis, composed of the aggregation of two signal decomposition methods (multiple linear regression and empirical mode decomposition) and one forecasting method (support vector regression), has been applied to identify the anomalies in the studied signals in order to better find correlations among them. The results show a strong correlation between the ambient dose equivalent rate and the 214Bi/214Pb ratio values and between both these signals and rainfall amount≥5 mm/h. Furthermore, the considered descendants of radon are mainly responsible for the overall ambient dose equivalent rate.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki obliczeń ciepła radiogenicznego (A) wykonanych dla utworów syluru i ordowiku w otworach wiertniczych L-1, K-1, O-2, B-1 i W-1 położonych w basenie bałtyckim. Podobne relacje ciepła radiogenicznego z profilowaniem gamma zaobserwowano we wszystkich analizowanych otworach z wyjątkiem otworu L-1, w którym sylurskie i ordowickie formacje bogate w kerogen wykazały inną charakterystykę.
The paper presents results of computations of the radioactive heat production (A) for the Silurian and Ordovician rocks in the L-1, K-1, O-2, B-1, and W-1 wells located in the Baltic Basin. For this purpose, well logging data – spectral gamma (intensity of the natural radioactivity) and gamma-gamma (bulk density) logs were used. Silurian deposits of the Jantar Bituminous Black Claystone Member and Ordovician deposits of the Sasino Claystone Formation were characterised by very high values of the radiogenic heat. These units are considered as sweet spots due to a high concentration of organic matter. Increased natural radioactivity and significantly reduced bulk densities caused by the presence of kerogen were observed in both lithostratigraphic units. A joint analysis of the spectral gamma ray log and the density logs showed that the increased radiogenic heat production in these formations was mainly caused by a higher concentration of uranium. Abnormally high values of radiogenic heat were also observed in the Ordovician glauconitic claystones of the Słuchowo Formation, where an increase in potassium, thorium, and uranium concentrations was detected. It should be noted that the deposits of the black claystones of the Jantar Member, and the claystones and mudstones of the Sasino Formations were characterised by high variability of the calculated parameter A. The presented article investigated the relationship between the calculated values of radiogenic heat and natural radioactivity, the velocity of longitudinal waves, as well as between bulk density. The relations were determined for the Silurian and Ordovician deposits. Similar relations between the radiogenic heat and the gamma ray log were observed in all wells except the L-1 well, in which Silurian and Ordovician formations rich in kerogen revealed a different characteristic. A significant decrease in radiogenic heat values was observed with the increase in P wave velocity. Detailed data analyses showed strong relationships between velocity and the content of thorium and potassium, which are the indicators of clay minerals, but also the content of uranium, which is associated with the organic matter presence. A similar relation showing a tendency of decreasing radiogenic heat was obtained for increased bulk densities of the formations.

Opis:
The term “re-flooding window” was recently proposed as a time-interval connected with the transgressive stage of present day peri-reefal development. In the analysis presented here, a fossil record of a re-flooding window has been recognized. Nine Late Silurian carbonate sections exposed on the banks of the Dnister River in Podolia (Ukraine) have been correlated base on bed-by-bed microfacies analysis and spectral gamma ray (SGR) measurements. Correlated were sections representing settings ranging from the inner part of a shallow-water carbonate platform to its slope, through an organic buildup. The reconstructed depositional scenario has been divided into six development stages, with the first three representing a regressive interval and the latter three a transgressive interval of the basin’s history. The re-flooding window has been identified at the beginning of a transgressive part of the succession. Surprisingly, it is characterized by an extremely fast growth of a shallow, tide-dominated platform and by deposition of calciturbiditic layers in a more basinal area. The interpreted succession is a small-scale model illustrating the reaction of carbonate depositional sub-environments to sea level changes and determining the facies position of the stromatoporoid buildups within the facies pattern on a Silurian shelf. The use of SGR analyses in shallow water, partly high-energy, carbonate facies, both for correlation purposes and for identifying depositional systems, is a relatively new method, and thus can serve as a reference for other studies of similar facies assortment.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono możliwości prowadzenia pomiarów chemicznych z zastosowaniem przenośnego spektrometru fluorescencji rentgenowskiej z dyspersją energii EDXRF w atmosferze helu. Metodyka badawcza wraz z tworzeniem modeli i interpretacją danych powstała w oparciu o zastosowanie aparatu XRF firmy Bruker, model Tracer 5g. W przypadku P4 dysponowano dokładnymi pomiarami laboratoryjnymi ICP-MS (ang.
In the paper, author presented the possibility of conducting chemical measurements in a helium atmosphere using a portable Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometer (EDXRF). The methodology, model creation and data interpretation were based on the Tracer 5g XRF (Bruker) application. Measurements in a helium atmosphere enable the reduction of detection limits for light elements, including the determination of sodium (Na) and magnesium (Mg), as well as elements applied in the spectral gamma-ray profiling range: potassium (K), uranium (U) and thorium (Th). One of the new measurement procedure aspects is the preparation of pellets using a hydraulic press with a pressure of up to 25 tons. Measurements with helium flow can only be performed on a consolidated material (solid rock, drill core, or pellet). The material for the research was taken from the cores, then quartered and divided into individual analyses. The results of the XRF analyses obtained with the helium flow method were compared to measurements made with standard XRF equipment, chemical laboratory tests, the results of XRD mineral analyses, and tests of natural gamma radioactivity. XRF analyses without the possibility of conducting measurements in a helium atmosphere were performed with the Titan S1 apparatus (Bruker). The tests were carried out on rock samples from two boreholes, P4 (19 samples) and J1 (11 samples). In P4, precise laboratory measurements ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry), ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry) and XRD results were available, while in the J1, radiometric and mineral tests were performed. Feldspars and dolomites were present in the samples from the J1 borehole, which made it possible to test the construction of models incorporating these minerals in relation to sodium and magnesium. The final part of the work presents correlation diagrams for selected, most essential elements forming the rock matrix, mineral and chemical models built on their basis and correlation diagrams for gamma spectrometric measurements.

The dry and well matured seeds of ashwagandha were irradiated with different doses of gamma rays viz., 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 KR respectively. The chromosome number of control plant is 2n = 48. The gamma rays affect the normal cytological behavior of ashwagandha species. The chromosomal aberrations increase with increase in the doses of gamma rays to optimum level of 30KR, because it causes changes in the chromosome structure, cellular structure and metabolism of plants. The chromosome aberration like, Sticky metaphase, Precocious moment chromosome, Fragments, Anaphasic bridge, Anaphasic laggard, Telophasic laggard. The present investigation was carried out to study the cytogenetic analysis of the species Withania somnifera. The chromosomal aberration increases with increase in the doses to optimum level (50 KR) of physical mutagen gamma rays.

Opis:
Ponadto w pracy przedstawiono procedury kalibracyjne stosowane podczas walidacji metody badawczej przed wdrożeniem do rutynowych pomiarów związanych z oceną narażenia pracowników na działanie promieniowania X i γ. FIMEL, Francja). Wszystkie ekspozycje dozymetrów, przeprowadzone dla celów walidacyjnych ww. czytnika, wykonano we wzorcowych wiązkach promieniowania X i γ z zastosowaniem fantomu prętowego ISO. Wyniki: Wykonane charakterystyki - energetyczna, dawkowa i kątowa dozymetru pierścionkowego - umożliwiły opracowanie wzoru dotyczącego oszacowania indywidualnego równoważnika dawki HP(0,07) oraz poddania go testowi weryfikacyjnemu. Med. Pr. 2013;64(5):631–637
Background: The aim of the study was to present the results of the interlaboratory comparisons for ring dosimeters and to confirm that the applied method is suitable for measuring the personal dose equivalent HP(0.07). In addition, calibration procedures used in dosimetric measurements in persons occupationally exposed to ionizing photon radiation X and γ were presented. Materials and Methods: Ring dosimeters made of flexible plastics with the diameter of approximately 20 mm, equipped with two thermoluminescence (TL) detectors type MTS-N, were the subject of interlaboratory comparisons. Irradiated detectors were red out using a new manual TLD's reader (FIMEL, France). All TLD exposures were done for validation of TLD readers and were performed using the reference X-ray and γ beams with the ISO rod phantom. The methodology of performed exposures corresponded with the methods applied by the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS), the European organizer of interlaboratory comparisons. Results: The energy, dose and angular characteristics of the ring dosimeter allowed to elaborate the formula for estimating and verifying the personal dose equivalent HP(0.07). The test was performed to check and confirm the correctness of the estimated characteristics. The test results were satisfactory, and thus the readiness to implement TLD reader in the used method and to participate in interlaboratory comparisons was confirmed. Conclusions: According to the requirements of the Polish Centre for Accreditation, the laboratory was participating in the interlaboratory comparison organized by EURADOS in terms of the personal dose equivalent HP(0.07). The result of the comparison was satisfactory, therefore the correctness of the testing procedure was confirmed. Med Pr 2013;64(5):631–637

Opis:
Gamma and neutron radiation is produced during the normal operation of linear accelerators like Free-Electron Laser in Hamburg (FLASH) or X-ray Free Electron Laser (X-FEL). Gamma radiation cause general degeneration of electronics devices and neutron fluence can be a reason of soft error in memories and microcontrollers. X-FEL accelerator will be built only in one tunnel, therefore most of electronic control systems will be placed in radiation environment. Exposing control systems to radiation may lead to many errors and unexpected failure of the whole accelerator system. Thus, the radiation monitoring system able to monitor radiation doses produced near controlling systems is crucial. Knowledge of produced radiation doses allows to detect errors caused by radiation, schedule essential replacement of control systems and prevent accelerator from serious damages. The paper presents the project of radiation monitoring system able to monitor radiation environment in real time.
