Numerous fragments of decorated limestone blocks attributed to the funerary chapel of the God’s Sealer Ikhi/Mery were found during the 2012 and 2015 seasons of Polish excavations in Saqqara. A theoretical reconstruction of the tomb facade is proposed based on the finds and some peculiarities of the decoration are discussed.

Palmyra
Roman Syria
Opis:
Next to Edessa, Palmyra was the only example of a city in the Roman Syria where the local Aramaic dialect has never gone out of use, nor has it been displaced in inscriptions. The epigraphic material from Palmyra consists in fact of a large corpus of inscriptions. Interestingly, most of them are associated with local sepulchral art. They were typically placed on the limestone slabs decorated in high relief by portraits of the deceased citizens, usually in a form of bust, rarely a figure or stele. Approximately 145 such sculptures were taken into consideration. The Palmyrenians on these funerary portraits are often depicted with the writing attributes, such as roll and capsa, the wide and narrow tablets, poliptych and codex, schedula, double schedula, stylus, and also keys. The question arises, what meanings did these figural tombstone decorations with such attributes originally expressed? In this study the author investigates the private, sepulchral character of Palmyrene portraits, their iconographic message, their local archaeological context and epigraphic (often bilingual) data. As a result four types of symbolical representations could be distinguished: (I) Schoolboys and Students; (II) Citizens of Greek Polis and of the Roman Empire; (III) Entrepreneurs (merchants, administrators, camel drivers and meharistes); (IV) Mourners (Tomb Owners and Priests). The Palmyrene funerary busts supply an outstanding documentation of noticeable use of writing tools in the Roman East. The abundant number of funerary representations with writing attributes implies a degree of statistical importance. The broad representation of writing attributes in funerary sculpture of Palmyra provides new arguments in the discussion on the literacy in the Ancient World, or at least in the Roman Syria. Funerary reliefs examined in this study are mostly depictions of commoners who represent middle and lower strata of the Roman provincial society. Consequently, it seems that the ability to use Aramaic and Greek alphabets was not uncommon. What is more, the ability to read and write in both languages was probably fairly widespread throughout the territory of the Roman Syria.

Opis:
The Brest Bible as an Inspiration for Protestant Poets. Biblical Phrases in the Religious Poetry of Evangelical Protestants in the 16th and 17th Centuries. A Preliminary SurveyThe aim of this paper is to examine the impact of the Brest Bible (its lexis and phraseology) on the religious poetry of the followers of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland and the Polish Reformed Church in the 16th and 17th centuries. The article is a preliminary study of the subject. The author analysed thematically consistent poems on death and divided them into three types: occasional poetry, represented by Cyprian Bazylik’s Short description of an affair at the death and funeral of the Enlightened Duchess Elżbieta of Szydłowiec Radziwiłłowa (Krótkie wypisanie sprawy przy śmierci i pogrzebie Oświeconej Księżny Paniej Halżbiety z Szydłowca Radziwiłowej, 1562); functional literature, illustrated with four songs from a Protestant hymnary by Krzysztof Kraiński (1609) and Andrzej Hünefeld (1646); and fine poetry, for which the author chose the The Quartan Fever Penance (Pokuta w kwartanie, written in 1652). For the Old-Polish Protestant authors of religious poetry, the Calvinist Bible is a constant reference point. It determines but by no means limits the horizons of imagination. Writing about deathly issues, the authors of occasional, high-art poetry or hymnary songs rarely borrow from the lexis of the Brest Bible and freely realize their artistic concepts. In their works there are only a few most expressive phrases and lexemes from the first Polish Protestant Bible. In the analyzed poems, Biblical phrases usually appear in the form of paraphrases, well-thought-out verses or Biblical scenes. The poets borrow words or Biblical phrases only when the described plot is scarcely known, usually drawn from a rarely referred to Old-Testament book. This gesture can be interpreted as a token of the poet’s circumspection.

This paper seeks to provide a new contribution to the debates on Viking Age women by focusing on a rather controversial notion of ‘female warriors’. The core of the article comprises a preliminary survey of archaeological evidence for female graves with weapons (axes, spears, swords and arrowheads) from Viking Age Scandinavia. Attention is focused not only on the types of weapons deposited with the deceased, but first and foremost on the meanings which similar practices may have had for the past societies. The author discusses why, where and how the weapons were placed in female graves and attempts to trace some patterns in this unusual funerary behaviour. In addition to exploring the funerary evidence, the iconographic representations of what could be regarded as ‘female warriors’ are also briefly considered. Lastly, a few remarks are also made on the notion of armed women in the textual sources

Numerous experiments have recently been conducted on burnt bones in order to develop methods of isotope analysis which would be useful in archaeological research. Since the results of these studies are not yet widely known, this review presents their potential applications in investigations of human remains from cremation burials. Radiocarbon dating of burnt osteological materials is discussed, including problems related to the “old wood effect”. Also considered is the analysis of light stable isotopes, i.e. δ13C, δ15N and δ18O, which is unsuitable for palaeodietary determinations, but useful as a source of information about certain parameters of funeral pyres. Tracing geographical origins and human mobility is possible by means of the analysis of strontium isotope ratio 87Sr/86Sr. Since an understanding of high-temperature-induced transformations of bone structure and chemical composition is important for these considerations, a detailed account of the processes is given as an introduction

A corpus of funerary linen was found in the 2012/2013 season in one of the rock tombs cut in the cliff bordering the Tuthmosis III temple platform in Deir el-Bahari during the work of the Polish–Egyptian Archaeological and Conservation Mission of the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. It derives from unidentified burials and from disturbed archaeological contexts and most probably was deposited in the tomb in modern times. It constitutes an important addition to the known body of funerary linen from the Third Intermediate/beginning of the Late Period, as attested by a cartouche of Taharqo and other elements of the burial assemblages. The discovered textiles provide important information about the funerary functions of linen, as well as technical aspects of Pharaonic textiles.

New data concerning an Old Kingdom official responsible for foreign expeditions are analysed in the paper. Textual evidence found in 2012 in the tomb of Ikhi/Mery in Saqqara provides a basis for more precise dating of the professional activity of the tomb owner, but also gives an insight into some aspects of functioning of the bureaucracy during the late Old Kingdom. Last but not least the architecture of the tomb, that is unusual in many respects, is discussed.

The ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey conducted in the south-eastern part of the Polish archaeological concession in West Saqqara confirmed the high usability of the GPR method in non-invasive prospecting of desert archaeological sites. The survey has allowed to confirm the location of one and the discovery of two so far unknown funerary structures characterized by significantly large dimensions. Analysis of the reflection profiles allow to conclude that these anomalies are generated by rock-hewn burial shafts. Only one of these tombs can be dated with high confidence to the end of the Old Kingdom. Precise determination of the chronology of the two other structures is not possible without archaeological verification.

A set of wooden figures representing female deities with painted fronts and flat backs was identified in the archaeological material coming from recent excavations in the Chapel of Hatshepsut. The fragments were scattered through the shafts of Third Intermediate Period date. Most probably they had once formed a single piece of funerary equipment from one of the burials. Remains of nine figures were distinguished. These were divided into two groups by size. The smallscale figures had outstretched arms, while the big-scale ones were shown with one arm raised and the other lowered alongside the body. They are presumed to have been attached to a flat wooden background. Both iconographical types are attested in the decoration of mortuary equipment from the New Kingdom on, though no object decorated with the same set of goddesses has been found so far.

In the 2012/2013 season, the Polish–Egyptian Archaeological and Conservation Mission of the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari (PCMA UW) continued work in a tomb (Tomb II) cut into the cliffs bordering the temple of Tuthmosis III from the west. The work focused on a shaft and two subterranean chambers (C and D), which yielded together more than 300 pieces of funerary linen and equipment. Despite the disturbed archaeological context, the finds constitute an important corpus of seldom studied and published Pharaonic textiles. Some of the textiles are of very high quality, up to 2 m in length and preserved with their original colors. Importantly, they portray characteristic features of Pharaonic Egyptian textiles. Several pieces have inscriptions, including one with a fragmentary cartouche.

Opis:
In archaeological discussions one may observe two fundamental and complementary aspects of burial mound symbolism – cosmological and sociological. In the first instance the process of building the mound represents a ritual reconstruction of the world’s structure. In the other instance it attests to the hierarchical ordering of the community. The complementarity with regard to the cosmological aspect means that the range and structure of the community transcends the borders of temporality. There is one other aspect, however, which could be labeled as the ‘communicative aspect’. It confirms the symbolic ‘inscribing’ of the dead into the cosmic and social order and their active role in sustaining the functioning and integrity of various spheres of existence. In consequence, the memory of the dead ancestors was guaranteed and the respect towards the deceased was not only an obligation dictated by the gods, but it also remained something for which the living constantly cared. This relative sense of human existence may be encountered in Homeric eschatology.

Several large cemeteries of the medieval period were excavated either extensively or in their entirety by the missions of the Sudan Archaeological Research Society in its concession at the Fourth Cataract. The data collected allows an assessment of developments in funerary culture spanning from the pagan into, and throughout, the Christian period. It highlights the generally dramatic changes in burial practices between the Post-Meroitic and Christian periods alongside the similarities between some of the later Kushite and Christian graves. These changes and similarities are discussed in connection with the physical continuity of cemeteries which demonstrate a close link between Post-Meroitic and Christian burials, the former often forming a focus for the later burials and being respected by the later grave diggers.
