Opis:
The object of considerations are axially functionally graded (FG) beams, which are loaded by an axial force varying along the length of the beam. The main idea presented here is to approximate FG beams by an equivalent beam with piecewise exponentially varying material properties, geometrical properties and axial load. Numerical solutions of the buckling analysis are obtained for four various types of boundary conditions associated with pinned and clamped ends. The usefulness of the proposed method is confirmed by comparing numerical results with those available for graded beams of special polynomial non-homogeneity.

Opis:
In this study, free vibration characteristics of a functionally graded Timoshenko beam that undergoes flapwise bending vibration is analysed. The energy expressions are derived by introducing several explanotary figures and tables. Applying Hamilton’s principle to the energy expressions, governing differential equations of motion and boundary conditions are obtained. In the solution part, the equations of motion, including the parameters for rotary inertia, shear deformation, power law index parameter and slenderness ratio are solved using an efficient mathematical technique, called the differential transform method (DTM). Natural frequencies are calculated and effects of several parameters are investigated.

Opis:
In this paper, a comprehensive study is carried out on the dynamic behaviour of Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams resting on Winkler type variable elastic foundation. The material properties of the beam and the stiffness of the foundation are considered to be varying along the length direction. The free vibration problem is formulated using Rayleigh-Ritz method and Hamilton’s principle is applied to generate the governing equations. The results are presented as non-dimensional natural frequencies for different material gradation models and different foundation stiffness variation models. Two distinct boundary conditions viz., clamped-clamped and simply supported-simply supported are considered in the analysis. The results are validated with existing literature and excellent agreement is observed between the results.

The wave propagation characteristics of functionally graded (FG) double-beams are investigated by use of Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Two beams are connected by a Winkler foundation. The wave propagation characteristics like frequency, phase and group velocities are obtained for different wave numbers and material properties. Four frequencies are obtained for functionally graded double-beam system. It is obtained that flexural and axial waves are coupled for FG double-beams.

Opis:
On the basis of Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the large-amplitude free vibration analysis of functionally graded beams is investigated by means of a finite element formulation. The von Kármán type nonlinear strain-displacement relationship is employed where the ends of the beam are constrained to move axially. The material properties are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to the powerlaw and sigmoid distributions. The finite element method is employed to discretize the nonlinear governing equations, which are then solved by the direct numerical integration technique in order to obtain the nonlinear vibration frequencies of functionally graded beams with different boundary conditions. The influences of power-law index, vibration amplitude, beam geometrical parameters and end supports on the free vibration frequencies are studied. The present numerical results compare very well with the results available from the literature where possible.

Opis:
A size-dependent Euler–Bernoulli beam model is derived within the framework of the higher-order nonlocal strain gradient theory. Nonlocal equations of motion are derived by applying Hamilton’s principle and solved with an analytical solution. The solution is obtained using the Navier solution procedure. In the case of simply supported boundary conditions, the analytical solutions of natural frequencies and critical buckling temperature for free vibration problems are obtained. The paper investigates the thermal effects on buckling and free vibrational characteristics of functionally graded size-dependent nanobeams subjected to various types of thermal loading. The influence of higher-order and lower-order nonlocal parameters and strain gradient scale on buckling and vibration are investigated for various thermal conditions. The obtained results are compared with previous research.

Opis:
A finite element model is developed for discretization and analysis of the functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) beam based on the Timoshenko beam theory and assuming linear constitutive relation for the corresponding piezoelectric material behavior. Results obtained using the developed finite element code are compared with the available experimental and numerical results for smart structures with and without graded properties. Static shape control of the beam is conducted using the Buildup Voltage Distribution (BVD) algorithm by implementing this method in the finite element routine. Numerical simulations have been performed to study the performance of the shape control algorithm by optimizing the distribution of the applied voltages. Furthermore, the effect of the number of iterations on the result accuracy as well as the variation of the control voltage distribution with the number of discretized regions and the volume fractions of the constituent material is studied. A fast numerical convergence with good accuracy is observed for the shape control of FGPM beams using the developed method. The proposed technique is a good candidate for the modeling, analysis, and control of smart structures with graded properties.

Opis:
A domain-boundary element method, based on modified couple stress theory, is developed for transient dynamic analysis of functionally graded micro-beams. Incorporating static fundamental solutions as weight functions in weighted residual expressions, governing partial differential equations of motion are converted to a set of coupled integral equations. A system of ordinary differential equations in time is obtained by domain discretization and solved using the Houbolt time marching scheme. Developed procedures are verified through comparisons to the results available in the literature for micro- and macro-scale beams. Numerical results illustrate elastodynamic responses of graded micro-beams subjected to various loading types. It is shown that metal-rich micro-beams and those with a smaller length scale parameter ratio undergo higher displacements and are subjected to larger normal stresses.
