Opis:
The use of salt to malt ice has definite effects on the environment. Some of these environmental effects are: soil erosion, environmental pollution, changes in mineral nutrition or general destruction of the physiological processes of plants. This use of salt has a negative impact on roadside vegetation and sustainability. The objective of the presented study was to investigate the effects of fulvic and humic organic acids as well as the calcium on growth and chlorophyll content of seven tree species grown under salt stress. Two year old seedlings of – Acer campestre, Aer platanoides, Acer pseudoplatanus, Acer tataricum ssp. ginnala, Ginkgo biloba, Platanus ×hispanica 'Acerifolia' and Tilia cordata were planted to plastic pots (2 dm3 vol). They were planted outdoors in a growing medium compound which had high sphagnum peat, grainy sand and composted pine bark. Salinity stress was maintained by irrigating plants with tap water containing 3.3 g NaCl/L H2O. Different organic fertilizers were used to redce the risk of nutritional stress caused by salinity. Salinity in the growing medium limited the growth of two maple species and littleleaf linden. In other species such A. campestre, A. tataricum ssp. ginnala, G. biloba there were no significant differences when compared to the control group of plants. Severe leaf damage was observed on A. paltanoides where leaf burning was seen on up to 30%of the leaf blade surface. The response to salinity of other species like A. pseudoplatanus, A. tataricum ssp. ginnala, and T. cordata was less evident. Humic organic acids applied alone to the growing medium improved the growth of all the maple species when compared to the control group. A calcium had the best effect on the growth of all tested trees except A. tataricum ssp. ginnala and G. biloba. The chlorophyll content index (CCI) differed according to the growing medium treatment and the species. The total CCI ranged from 9.62 for the control plants P. ×hispanica 'Acerifolia' to 52.64 for G. biloba which had been treated with a calcium. Application of organic fertilizers to the salt treated growing medium increased the CCI in many species.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to find the effect of water regimes on soil sorptivity and humic components of organic matter. Physicochemical parameters were also determined. Steady state cumulative infiltration was the highest (60-100 mm) in non-irrigated upland soil and the lowest (8-10 mm) in waterlogged soil. The highest sorptivity of 4.0-4.5mmmin-1/2 was found in nonirrigated upland soil and the lowest in seasonally waterlogged soil (1.0-1.5 mm min-1/2). Organic carbon content of all soils was low (<1%), EC values were also low (< 4 dS m-1). Saturated moisture was high in waterlogged soil. The non-irrigated upland soils had a higher fraction of fulvic acid (0.15-0.2%), due to which they were more capable of infiltration, whereas waterlogged soils had a greater fraction of insoluble humic acid (0.29-0.35%) and exhibited less cumulative infiltration. Sorptivity decreased as the clay content, pH, EC, porosity and humic acid content of the soil increased.

Opis:
The mechanism of coagulation with highly alkaline polyaluminum chlorides is well understood, but there is a lack of information on the effect of the presence of iron in these coagulants on the efficiency of purifying water with increased contents of natural organic matters among which humic substances are precursors of disinfection by-products. The dissolved forms of organic substances are the most problematic with regard to water treatment because major concern is the formation of disinfection by products resulting from reactions between dissolved organic matter fractions and disinfectants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of precursors of disinfection by-products removal using highly alkaline polyaluminium chlorides that had different alkalinity and iron content. In the water after the coagulation process a value of SUVA254 was calculated because this indicator correlates well with dissolved organic matter reactivity and disinfection by-products. The analysis of the obtained results showed that the effectiveness of dissolved organic matter removal was determined by the formation of colored iron-organic complexes.

Opis:
The quantity and quality of organic carbon were studied in bottom sediments of two small, shallow, polymictic dam reservoirs located in SE Poland: Zalew Zemborzycki (ZZ) and Brody Iłżeckie (BI). Total content of organic carbon (Corg), and its fractions have been determined. The maps of Corg spatial distribution have been compiled. Wide ranges of sedimentary Corg were noted as well as differences between two reservoirs in respect of its content and spatial distribution. The Corg content in the sediments showed a longitudinal zonation pattern in the ZZ and a transverse one in the BI. The composition of sedimentary Corg showed the highest percentage of the insoluble fraction followed by humus acid fraction and the lowest – hemicelluloses fraction. In the humus acid fraction, fulvic acids overbalanced humic acids.
