This paper presents selected problems connected with LPG fuel pressure changing. The LPG fuel pressure depends on fuel composition and temperature. This takes effect on fuel dose and it is especially important for liquid phase sequential injection system. Research results show that changes of LPG injection pressure significantly affect in useful and ecological parameters of SI engine.

Coraz większa ilość silników o zapłonie samoczynnym wyposażona jest w układy zasilania typu common-rail. W układach tych wtryskiwacze są zasilane paliwem pod wysokim ciśnieniem ze wspólnego zasobnika. Dynamiczne zmiany ciśnienia w szynie spowodowane są zjawiskami zachodzącymi podczas wtrysku i zasilania tegoż zasobnika. Pomiar tych zmian umożliwia czujnik ciśnienia, standardowo zamocowany na zasobniku przez producenta. Przebieg zmian tego ciśnienia jest zależny od zjawisk zachodzących podczas tłoczenia paliwa przez pompę wysokiego ciśnienia oraz procesów podczas wtryskiwania paliwa przez wtryskiwacze. Każda zmiana w tym procesie powoduje zmianę przebiegu ciśnienia w zasobniku. Celem pracy było opracowanie metodyki diagnozowania wtryskiwaczy układu wtryskowego typu C-R na podstawie analizy dynamicznych zmian ciśnienia w zasobniku.
More and more compress engines contain common rail fuel systems. This type of fuel systems injectors are supplied with high pressurised petroleum from the common rail. Dynamic changes of pressure in rail are caused by injection events and fuel supply. The pressure sensor mounted by manufactures in the common rail enables observing and measuring changes in pressure. Pressure changes depend on the phenomena occurring during injection and pumping processes. Every change in each process influences pressure changes in the common rail. The aim of the paper is to elaborate on diagnostic methods of the C-R fuel system based on dynamic changes of pressure in the rail.

The manuscript presents the analysis of influence of fuel injection pressure on the combustion parameters of marine 4-stroke diesel engine. Analysis is based on computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model designed on the basis of the motion mesh of combustion chamber of the marine engine cylinder and air inlet and exhaust gas ducts. Presented model consists of models of fuel injection into combustion chamber, breaking-up and evaporation of the fuel, mixing with air and turbulent combustion with heat transfer to construction elements of the engine cylinder. Mentioned CFD model is validated according to boundary and initial conditions taken from direct measurements. The chosen research object is laboratory 4-stroke turbocharged Diesel engine with direct injection of the fuel and mechanically controlled of both cylinder valves and the injector. During the calculation the fuel dose, delivered into the engine cylinder was changed without any other changes in the initial and boundary conditions. This approach to the problem allows to the cause-effect analysis. The results of presented study are as follows: The increase of the fuel injection pressure causes the increase of fuel dose, delivered into the engine cylinder and the increase of intensity of both kinetic and diffusion stage of the combustion process. The result of this is the increase of pressure and temperature of the combustion and significant increase of the NOx fraction despite the decrease of the O2 content in the combustion chamber of the engine.

Majority of modern diesel engines is fitted with common-rail (CR) fuel systems. In these systems, the injectors are supplied with fuel under high pressure from the fuel rail (accumulator). Dynamic changes of pressure in the fuel rail are caused by the phenomena occurring during the fuel injection into the cylinders and the fuel supply to the fuel rail through the high-pressure fuel pump. Any change in this process results in a change in the course of pressure in the fuel rail, which, upon mathematical processing of the fuel pressure signal, allows identification of the malfunction of the pump and the injectors. The paper presents a methodology of diagnosing of CR fuel injection system components based on the analysis of dynamic pressure changes in the fuel rail. In the performed investigations, the authors utilized LabView software and a μDAC data acquisition module recording the fuel pressure in the rail, the fuel injector control current and the signal from the camshaft position sensor. For the analysis of the obtained results, ‘FFT’ and ‘STFT’ were developed in order to detect inoperative injectors based on the curves of pressure in the fuel rail. The performed validation tests have confirmed the possibility of identification of malfunctions in the CR system based on the pressure curves in the fuel rail. The ‘FFT’ method provides more information related to the system itself and accurately shows the structure of the signal, while the ’STFT’ method presents the signal in such a way as to clearly identify the occurrence of the fuel injection. The advantage of the above methods is the accessibility to diagnostic parameters and their non-invasive nature.

This paper presents a method of adjusting and designing the maintenance scheme for the high-pressure fuel pumps of a slow-speed two-stroke marine engine, MAN 6S70MC-C. The maintenance database for the marine fuel system was obtained from the planned maintenance software, and covered a period of 11 years. During this period, 29 failures occurred that required corrective actions. Our methodology includes failure mode analysis, risk analysis, reliability calculation and maintenance interval adjustment. Each failure is described using a failure mode analysis, based on a combination of the mode and cause of failure. The objective of this study is to recommend a new preventive maintenance interval based on the exponential reliability results and the analysed maintenance data. The initial maintenance plan for each fuel pump was set to 8,000 running hours, whereas in the modified plan, it is recommended to set this to 4,000 hours. Our results show an increase in the system reliability from 60% to 95% when the new modified maintenance plan is applied. In addition, the results and the recommended initial maintenance schedule are validated based on three similar types of engine with the same fuel pump system. The new maintenance approach can reduce the risk of component failure, which will lead to increased reliability of the fuel pump system and the optimisation of maintenance costs.

This paper describes the way of modernization of the direct operation fuel feeding system of diesel engine. Effective, ecological and economical characteristics of a modern diesel engine are greatly de-termined by parameters of using fuel-feeding system. Thus, in modern conditions, fuel-feeding systems have to fulfil specified requirements, which are mainly connected with fuel supply process intensification, possibility of adaptable regulation of fuel injection lead angle, cycle fuel delivering and injection characteristic at full range of engine operation regimes. At present time accumulator fuel feeding systems Common Rail type, fulfil these requirements best of all. However, despite its advantages, those kinds of systems have number of disadvantages. The main ones are high price and structural complexity of the system elements. Because of this Common Rail does not have wide using in the diesel engines with number of cylinders less than three. Although that type of diesels exactly is universal mechanical energy, source and can be used in many types of machinery, including ones with strict ecological norms. However, up to now these engines are equipped with the direct operation fuel feeding system that despite its high reliability and low price is worse than accumulator systems in the injection pressure level and possibilities of fuel feeding process control. Thus, main objective of a modernization of the direct operation fuel feeding system is topical. Speed forcing of high-pressure fuel pump was used. Maximal injection pressure is successfully increased 1.42 times. It provides intensification of fuel injection process. Implementation of the electronic control allows counting this method of fuel feeding system modernization promising for small diesel engines.

Common rail (CR) injection systems have been universally applied in passenger car engines for twenty years. Moreover, they are applied on a wide scale in trucks, machinery and stationary engines. They have many advantages such as very good fuel spraying due to high injection pressure, injection dose distribution to several smaller, or less heat generation compared to traditional systems. At the same time, the use of this type of system involves a number of problems. They are characterized, among other things, by the high cost of manufacturing and the high sensitivity to changes in the quality of the used fuel. The most important component of the common rail injection system is the high-pressure injection pump. The authors propose a new, alternative pump design with the hypocycloid drive – the article presents the issue of using this type of pump. Further sections describe the design of a pump utilizing a hypocycloid mechanism; demonstrate beneficial functional features and present selected results of the assembly's dynamic simulation. The pump is also characterized by the possibility of multiplying the piston's pitch while maintaining its diameter. It makes it possible to obtain much greater discharge per operating cycle. Taking into account the considerable quantity of fuel transferring by the pump, was also possible to propose an idea of use of hydraulic booster in such pump. In this field, the authors have presented schematic diagram of a pressure booster with a description of its operation.

The advancement of diesel fuel injection systems is forced by the increasingly stringent exhaust emissions limits. Modern injection systems must generate fuel pressure in excess of 200 MPa, which very often leads to premature wear of the mating components. Generating high pressures results in much force load acting on the pumps. In the case of frequently applied cam-driven pumps, high loads result in significant forces caused by friction. The friction force loads the piston perpendicularly to its axis, which rules out the application of super hard but fragile materials such as ceramics. One of the possible solutions of this problem is the application of unconventional drive systems, the example of which is the hypocycloidal drive. The paper presents the results of simulations comparing selected parameters of the piston motion of the cam-driven pumps and the pumps fitted with hypocycloidal drive. The use of the CAD software also enabled identification of the force acting on the piston (force perpendicular to the piston axis) in the cam-driven pump and its lack in the pump fitted with hypocycloidal drive.

W artykule przedstawiono metodę diagnozowania wysokociśnieniowej pompy paliwa w silnikach FSI z bezpośrednim wtryskiem benzyny za pomocą interpretacji przebiegów ciśnienia w obwodzie niskociśnieniowym. Ta metoda umożliwia wykrywanie usterek mechanicznych wysokociśnieniowej pompy paliwa oraz usterek elektrycznych zaworu regulacji ciśnienia paliwa bez konieczności wykonywania demontażu tych podzespołów. Dodatkowo został przedstawiony sposób regulacji układu wysokiego ciśnienia paliwa z uwzględnieniem jego pracy w trybie awaryjnym.
This paper presents a method of diagnosing high pressure fuel pump In FSI engines with direct injection by interpreting trends of pressure in the low-pressure circuit. This method enables detection of mechanical failures of high pressure fuel pump and electrical faults of fuel pressure regulator valve without dismantling these components. Additionally this paper contains a description of a regulation method of high-pressure fuel system including its operation in limp-in mode.

Celem artykułu była analiza stanu technicznego systemu Common Rail pracującego na biopaliwie. Głównym obiektem badawczym były wtryskiwacze paliwa. Silnik pracował na estrze metylowym oleju rzepakowego (B100). Pojazd przejechał około 5000 km i zasilany był paliwem B100. Następnie zdemontowano i rozebrano na elementy składowe wtryskiwacze paliwa, które zostały poddane weryfikacji i analizie.
The aim of article was analysis technical condition Common Rail system working on biodiesel. Main researches object was fuel injector. Engine worked on rape methyl ester (B100). Vehicle traveled 5000 km and was powered by B100 fuel. Next fuel injectors were dismount and dismantled. Spare parts were verified and researched.

W artykule zaprezentowano nową metodę zakuwania łbów wysokociśnieniowych przewodów paliwowych do silników wysokoprężnych. Opisano nowy sposób ciernego mocowania materiału wyjściowego w przyrządach typu TR, polegający na przenoszeniu poziomego oporu przyrządu na pionowy zacisk wkładek chwytowych. Przedstawiono przebieg zakuwania 2 typów przewodów, konstrukcję narzędzi oraz wykonane odkuwki. Pozytywny wynik prób technologicznych pozwala na aplikację metody w praktyce przemysłowej.
The paper presents a new method of shutting high pressure fuel pipes for Diesel engines. A new way of frictional fixing of the initial material in the TR type devices consisting in the transformation of the horizontal device resistance to vertical clamp of the gripping inserts has been presented. The process of shutting 2 types of pipes has been described, as well as the tool design and forgings made. The positive result of technological trials allows for the application of the method in industrial practice.

The storage supply systems of Common Rail type are characterized by high possibilities in shaping the rate of injection. The possibility to implement multi-injection at high pressure, easiness of adapting the system to the engine, relatively easiness of compensation the arrangement of injector parameters resulting from work tolerance, as well as easiness of making changes in the electronic engine controller enabling the production of engines with various performances, cause that type of these solutions currently are widely used injection systems in diesel engines. Injection system should be characterized above all by high precision fuel dosing into engine cylinders, the accuracy in starts controlling of individual phase of injection, repeatability and reliability and durability, as well as the up keep of these parameters for long time during operating duration. Fuel injection system works in difficult conditions resulting from high pressure, vibrations, electromagnetic interference affecting electronic executive systems and high temperatures. Especially the injector and injection pipes are open to high temperatures. The dimensions of used elements are also important. The article presents selected results concerning the effect of the length of high-pressure pipes on injection process parameters such as fuel amount, overflow in injector, and the fuel pressure course in injection pipe in front of electromagnetic injector socket. The study was conducted with test stand with electronic measurement system of fuel amount. The tests were made at different pressures in the rail and for different durations of the injector opening.

This paper presents the effect of the main parameters of fuel injection, such as injection angle and injector opening time, on the combustion process in a self-ignition engine. The study continues the research aimed at optimising the bi-fuel feeding of self-ignition engines with a main fuel dose of methane (CNG). The results described in the paper apply to a HATZ 1B40 one-cylinder engine, which was adapted for being powered with methane. Examinations of the engine powered with a pilot dose of mechanically-injected diesel oil revealed the necessity to adjust the fuel injection advance angle. To this end, the mechanical system offuel supply was replaced with a Common Rail, with controllable fuel injection pressure, fuel injection advance angle and injector opening time. The results presented in the paper show the characteristics of the injector output depending on the fuel pressure in the Common Rail and on the duration of the electric impulse which opens the injector. Moreover, the article presents examples of pressure courses in the combustion chamber at a constant fuel dose and with a different fuel injection advance angle. An example of the combustion pressure course at a constant fuel dose and variable injection pressure and injector opening time is given.

This paper presents the analysis of costs and cost-efficiency of the repair of modern fuel injection systems in compression-ignition engines. The requirements for modern Diesel engines are low emission of toxic substances into the atmosphere and low fuel consumption. In order to meet the rigorous standards, the Common Rail fuel injection system has been implemented. By increasing fuel injection pressure to 200 MPa and introducing multi-stage dosing, engine designers have improved the process of air-fuel mixture combustion and engine ecological and economic parameters. The price for these changes is an accelerated wear of fuel injection equipment in modern CI engines. Regular fuel filter replacement and periodical cleaning of the systems would minimise the risk of damage. Unfortunately, most users do not comply with vehicle servicing times, and come to car repair shops only when a failure occurs, but then it is too late and the repair costs are high.

The availability of increasingly scarce fossil fuels causes high fuel prices, so alternative fuels are needed to reduce the use of fossil energy. Briquettes are an alternative energy that can be made from biomass, one of which is rice husk. The quality of the briquettes was determined by the material, the type of adhesive, and the strength of the briquette pressure. The briquette pressure will affect the mechanical properties of the briquettes such as density, stability and durability of the briquettes. This study aimed to determine the features of rice husk charcoal briquettes with variations in compacting pressure as an alternative fuel. The compaction pressure used in this study was 3 tons, 5 tons, and 7 tons. In general, the briquettes produced from this study can be used as an alternative energy source in terms of the resulting combustion temperature which ranges from more than 300–500 °C.The combustion rate obtained shows that the briquettes with a compaction pressure of 3 tons have a high combustion rate value of 0.553 g/minute, while the briquettes with a compaction pressure of 5 tons and 7 tons have a low combustion rate value of 4.20 g/min and 0.418 g/minute respectively. Therefore, the best quality briquettes from this study were the briquettes with a compaction pressure of 5 tons and 7 tons, so that they could be considered as alternative energy for wood and fossil fuels for energy needs in the domestic industry.

In recent years, the development of IT systems for fleet monitoring was observed. Tire pressure monitoring systems are constantly improved. Decreased values in tire pressure can cause deformation of tires. Monitoring of tire pressure is an important function in oversized transport trucks. Tire pressure and rolling resistant influence fuel consumption. The purpose of this paper was to determine the impact of tire pressure on fuel consumption in a fleet of trucks with tire pressure monitoring system installed and to determine the impact of other factors that may affect fuel consumption, such as the vehicle weight, brake usage and cruise control usage. The results of the research were developed using a multiple regression model describing the above dependence.

The issues addressed in this paper concern the effect of pressure in the Common Rail accumulator on the engine operating parameters such as its torque, power output, rotational speed as well as its hourly and specific fuel consumption. Here, the research methods were performed by using the engine test bench strictly in accordance with the specific standards but particularly according to the requirements specified by these standards. The research station was the Fiat Multijet 1.3 JTD engine with turbocharging and direct injection, used as a power unit in the motor cars. Additionally, the experimental tests were run by using also (1) the HP-made measuring set for measurements the high pressure (up to 2,500 bars) in the Common Rail system, and (2) the CDIF/2 diagnostic interface. All relationships are presented in the form of graphs, and what is found here is the increasing linear relationship between the p rail pressure and the engine speed: with an increase in speed comes a decrease in the total injection time. The torque and its power output were a function of both the pressure in the Common Rail accumulator and the speed. It was found that the highest total engine efficiency (fuel consumption per unit) was for the rail pressure ranging from 1,000 to 1,100 bars. The findings come up for discussion about the apt choice of pressure in the rail, together with the total injection time and the turbocharger highest efficiency, for the specified speed of a car power unit.

W artykule przedstawiono wybrane wyniki badań ciśnień spalania silnika PERKINS 1100 zasilanego mieszaniną paliwa mikroemulsyjnego: węglowodorowo-estrowo-etanolowego oraz porównawczo węglowodorowym, niskosiarkowym olejem napędowym EKODIESEL ULTRA B i estrem metylowym kwasów oleju rzepakowego FAME (100%). Zastosowanie paliw o różnych właściwościach fizykochemicznych do silników wysokoprężnych wymaga dużych dokładności pomiarów parametrów diagnostycznych celem poznania występujących różnic w procesach wtrysku i spalania silników zasilanych tymi paliwami. Spełnianie coraz bardziej rygorystycznych norm w emisji składników toksycznych spalin zmusza współczesnego użytkownika silników spalinowych o zapłonie samoczynnym do posiadania szybkich i precyzyjnych metod oceny jego stanu technicznego, a szczególnie procesu spalania oraz stanu technicznego aparatury wtryskowej. Analiza eksperymentalnie wyznaczonych wykresów indykatorowych ciśnienia spalania wykazała wpływ właściwości fizykochemicznych badanych paliw: mineralnych, roślinnych i ich mieszanin z etanolem na ciśnienia spalania oraz na wskaźniki efektywne pracy badanego silnika. Wykazano, że rodzaj paliwa o różnych właściwościach fizykochemicznych ma istotny wpływ na proces wtrysku paliwa i jego spalanie. Wpływ ten przejawia się w oddziaływaniu na wskaźniki efektywne, zużycie paliwa, na wskaźniki energetyczne, emisję toksycznych składników ze spalinami.
The paper presents investigation results of the engine PERKINS 1100. The engine was powered a mixture of microemulsive fuel: hydrocarbon-ester-ethanol and comparatively with hydrocarbon, low-sulphuric EKODIESEL ULTRA B diesel and the methylic ester of acids of the FAME rape oil (100%). Using fuels about different properties physicochemical to diesel engines requires the big accuracies of the measurements of diagnostic parameters in order to get to know appearing differences in processes of injection and burning engines out powered with these fuels. Fulfilling rigorous norms more and more in emission of elements of the toxic exhaust fumes is forcing the contemporary user of internal-combustion engines about the self-ignition to have fast and precise methods of estimation of its technical state, particularly of the process of burning and the technical state of injection apparatus. Analysis of graphs experimentally outlined indicator demonstrated pressures of burning influence of the property physicochemical of examined fuels: mineral, plant and of their mixtures with the ethanol on pressures of burning and the engine to effective signs of the work examined. They demonstrated, that kind of fuel about different properties physicochemical an essential influence on the process has burning fuel injection and it. This influence is showing in the influence to effective signs, the fuel consumption, for energy signs, the broadcasting of toxic ingredients with the exhaust fumes.

Energy demand is increasing exponentially in the last decade. To meet such demand there is an urgent need to enhance the power generation capacity of the electrical power generation system worldwide. A combined-cycle gas turbines power plant is an alternative to replace the existing steam/gas electric power plants. The present study is an attempt to investigate the effect of different parameters to optimize the performance of the combined cycle power plant. The input physical parameters such as pressure ratio, air fuel ratio and a fraction of combustible product to heat recovery heat exchanger via gas turbine were varied to determine the work output, thermal efficiency, and exergy destruction. The result of the present study shows that for maximum work output, thermal efficiency as well as total exergy destruction, extraction of combustible gases from the passage of the combustion chamber and gas turbine for heat recovery steam generator is not favorable. Work output and thermal efficiency increase with an increase in pressure ratio and decrease in air fuel ratio but for minimum total exergy destruction, the pressure ratio should be minimum and air fuel ratio should be maximum.

The paper presents the results of acoustic emission signals application for diagnosing defects detecting signal sources in the fuel injection system of marine diesel engines. Changes of acoustic emission signals are sensitive to the working of the injection pump and the condition of injectors. The emitted signals are dependent on their technical condition.

The value of tire pressure affects a number of important vehicle features. The article pays attention to assessing the impact of the change in the tire pressure on both the rolling resistance and fuel consumption. The measurements were performed with four different values of tire pressure. The impact of the change in the tire pressure on the rolling resistance was measured during the driving tests. In order to measure the rolling resistance during tests, the measurement methodology was devised and a device for measuring the rolling resistance was constructed. The measurement of the impact the tire pressure change on the fuel consumption was performed via vehicle dynamometer. The result showed a linear dependence between the tire pressure and rolling resistance. These results measured points to the importance of keeping the correct value of the tire pressure in relation to the fuel consumption.
