Opis:
The study was carried out to investigate the domestication potential of Flacourtia jangomas (Lour.) Raeusch, a wild fruit species in Bangladesh, through nursery raising from seeds and clonal propagation by stem cutting. Air dried seeds were treated with four different pre-sowing treatments i.e., control (T0), seeds soakedin coldwater for 24 h (T1), 48 h (T2), or 72 h (T3) to explore the seedgermination ability of the species. Pre-sowing treatments significantly enhancedthe germination period, germination percentage andbiomass production of seedlings. The early germination (least imbibition period), highest germination percentage (81.3) and total dry biomass (0.52 g) was observed in T2 (seeds soaked in cold water for 48 h) while the lowest germination percentage (53.7) andtotal dry biomass (0.23 g) was observedin T3 andT0 respectively. The plant species was highly amenable for rooting for clonal propagation. However, the rooting ability of cuttings was significantly affectedby the application of IBA. The highest rooting percentage (100), maximum root number (5.63), the longest root length (3.28 cm) andbest survival (85.0%) were obtainedfrom the cuttings treatedwith 0.4% IBA solution followed by 0.2% IBA andthe lowest was in cuttings without treatment. Therefore, pre-sowing treatment ‘soaking of seeds in cold water for 48 h for nursery raising and ‘0.4% IBA treatment’ of stem cuttings for clonal propagation may be recommended for mass production of quality planting stocks for the domestication of the species through homestead agroforestry or in fruit orchards.

Opis:
Edible wild fruit tree species are known to provide enormous products and services to several rural communities worldwide. Products derived from such edible wild fruit tree species and related conservation issues are not adequately documented. The objectives of this study were to document the uses/products derived from five most preferred edible wild fruit tree species of Gulu district; how their products are harvested; how they are locally managed; if there are any constraints to cultivation and local strategies for conservation. The five edible wild fruit species used in this study (Vitellaria paradoxa Gaertn, Vitex doniana Sweet, Borassus aethiopum Mart, Tamarindus indica L. and Annona senegalensis Oliv.) were earlier identified from household heads in Gulu district as most preferred. Data on these were collected using questionnaires, interview guides, field visits, home observation and photography. The main uses and products which were established included fruits, fuel-wood, charcoal, medicinal, timber among others. Modes of harvests varied with each product. No management system was in place for any fruit tree species. Wild fruits have several products not yet documented. Willingness to cultivate these fruit trees is low. It is, therefore, important to raise awareness on the demises of mismanaging these tree species, set and implement adequate conservation measures.

Cherries are known as health friendly fruits due to their abundant phytochemical compositions. This study was conducted to determine phytochemical and pomological fruit properties of different cherry species including mahaleb (Prunus mahaleb L.), wild sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.), wild sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.), two sweet cherries (‘Napoleon’ and ‘Starks Gold’) and one sour cherry (‘Kütahya’) cultivars. For this aim, together with various pomological traits, total phenolics and anthocyanin contents, antioxidant capacity, organic acids, sugars, were analyzed in fruits of relevant genotypes. Results of all examined traits significantly varied between genotypes. Mahaleb showed the highest TSS (30.17%), fructose (8.71 μg/g) and glucose (20.74 μg/g) contents. Wild sour cherry gave the highest antioxidant capacity (13.25 mmol TE/ kg total weight), anthocyanin (351.0 mg Pg-3-glk/kg total weight), citric acid (0.56 μg/g) and malic acid (2.96 μg/g) contents. As a rootstock, mahaleb was found to be superior in some of the traits when compared to wild sweet cherry. Significant correlations were observed between various traits. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) revealed different relationships among the traits and evaluated genotypes.

The breeding system in Orchidaceae generates many questions about the selfing potential of its representatives. We investigated the ability of spontaneous autogamy of four orchid species: Cephalanthera rubra and Neottia ovata of the Neottieae tribe and Gymnadenia conopsea and Platanthera bifolia of the Orchideae tribe. These species represent diverse specializations of the gynostemium architecture. The self-compatibility and properties of autogamous seeds were determined in a bagging experiment and seed development analysis. After induced autogamy, a high level of fruiting (80-100%) was noted in all of the four study species. C. rubra, N. ovata, and G. conopsea are completely self-compatible, and P. bifolia is suggested to be partially self-compatible. If autogamy occurred, inbreeding depression and resource limitation on seed development appeared only in the two Orchideae species. Independent of flower specialization, both Neottieae species and P. bifolia were completely allogamous, whereas G. conopsea could be facultatively autogamous.

There have been several efforts to plant trees in Uganda but the rate of tree planting has remained low perhaps due to coercing farmers to plant the tree species against their preference. In this study, the tree species’ preferences of farmers in Albertine rift are presented. Key informant interviews, focus group interviews and semi-structured household survey questionnaires were used. A sample of 218 households was selected randomly to include both tree farmers and non-tree farmers in Kiryanga Sub County. The descriptive summaries and content analysis were used in data analysis. Results indicate that Eucalyptus spp., Pinus spp., and fruit trees were most preferred. Farmers have different tree species’ preferences due to the benefits obtained from them. Provision of these suitable tree species’ seedlings will highly incentivize and enhance tree planting in Uganda.

Opis:
The results of the study on morphological variation of fruits and seeds of a rare forest tree species Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz in Poland are presented and discussed. The ripe fruits were collected from 13 localities widespread within the range of the species. Fruits and seeds were measured according to 13 morphological traits. The biometric data were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis in attempt to define intra and inter populational variation. Most of the fruit and seed traits are significantly correlated and are characterized by moderate level of variation. Traits describing size and shape are higher variable in seeds than in fruits. High level of variation within examined populations was ascertained. The average among population component of variation was only 23.99%. Though the differences between sampled populations are significant, almost no geographical pattern of this differentiation was detected. The biological significance of some of fruit and seed features is discussed in the paper. Examining the collected material a single fruits with 5–6 seeds were found what suggests the presence of three carpels in gynoeceum, a number not previously reported in the species.

In this study pollen grains of 13 cultivars and 3 rootstocks belonging to 5 species (P. armeniaca, P. domestica, P. dulcis, P. persica, P. avium) of the genus Prunus collected from North-East Sicily were examined for the micromorphological characterization through the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The length of polar axis (P) and the equatorial diameter (E) of grain, P/E ratio, the length of colpi (C), diameter of perforations (DP) and the number of perforations in 25 μm2 (PN), the width of muri (WM), the distance between muri (DM) and their number in 25 μm2 (MN), the width of grooves (WG) were measured and their variation was compared among studied taxa. Moreover multivariate statistical analysis was carried out to distinguish morphometric information from measured parameters. All pollen grains are trizonocolpate, isopolar, medium-large sized and their shape varies from prolate to perprolate. Regarding outline pollen grains are subtriangular in polar view and elliptic in equatorial view. Exine sculpturing is striate with perforations on grain surface. The arrangement of ridges appears roughly parallel but too sloped (sometimes curved) compared to polar axis, or branched and oriented in different directions, or perfectly parallel or more irregular with bifurcated ridges often sinuous. The analyses showed a great variability (particularly in P. domestica cultivars) related in some cases to the diversity in the morphological features of the leaves and the fruits of the investigated entities.

The investigation carried out in the years 2006-2008 aimed at the assessment of pumpkin fruit of 12 cultivars belonging to Cucurbita maxima ('Amazonka', 'Ambar', 'Bambino', 'Karowita', 'Melonowa Zolta', 'Uchiki Kuri') and Cucurbita pepo ('Danka Polka', 'Miranda', 'Junona', 'Pyza' and 'Warszawska Makaronowa', as well as 'Jet' FI). The evaluation involved the content of carotenoids, vitamin C. starch, polyphenols, soluble solids, dry matter, total and reducing sugars, as well as nitrates and macroelements (P, K, Mg, Ca) in pumpkin fruit immediately after harvest and after 90-day storage in gravity storehouse. Pumpkin was cultivated from transplants planted to a destination site in the second decade of May. Mature pumpkin fruits were harvested in the second week of September. Cultivars of Cucurbita ma-dma featured higher content of carotenoids, vitamin C, starch, soluble solids, dry matter. total and reducing sugars than those belonging to Cucurbita pepo. The highest content of carotenoids was recorded in 'Amazonka' (18.40 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.) and 'Ambar' (15.49 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.) cvs. The richest source of starch proved to be fruits of 'Ambar' (61.5 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.), 'Amazonka'(31.3 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.) and 'Uchiki Kuri' (20.95 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.) cvs. Different levels of total phenolics in pumpkin fruit of all estimated cultivars were less yisible as far as carotenoids, vitamin C and starch contents were concerned. After 90 days of storage contents of carotenoids, vitamin C, starch, total and reducing sugars, dry matter and nitrates as well as pH value decreased, while the level of potassium, phosphorus, tnagnesium and calcium increased. There was not observed significant decrease in total phenolics content in fruits of C. maxima and C. pepo after storage.
Owoce odmian należących do dyni olbrzymiej zawierały więcej karotenoidów, witaminy C. skrobi, ekstraktu, suchej masy oraz cukrów ogółem i redukujących niż owoce dyni zwyczajnej. Największą zawartość karotenoidów odnotowano w częściach jadalnych odmian 'Amazonka' (18,40 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.), 'Ambar' (15,49 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.). Najwięcej skrobi miały owoce odmiany 'Ambar' (61.5 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.), 'Amazonka' (31,3 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.) i "Uchiki Kuri' ((20,95 mg o 100 g-1 d.m.). Różnice w zawartości polifenoli pomiędzy badanymi odmianami były mniej widoczne niż w przypadku karotenoidów, witaminy C czy skrobi. Po 90-dniowym przechowywaniu zawartość karotenoidów, witaminy C, cukrów, suchej masy i azotanów oraz wartość pH malały, podczas gdy poziom makroskładników wzrastał. Nie odnotowano znaczących zmian w zawartości polifenoli po przechowaniu.

The oil content and fatty acids profile of a number of Polish wild species of rose fruits were examined by GC. The total fatty acid contents ranged from 6.5% to 12.9% of dry mass in fruits. The composition of oils was similar in the investigated species. 17 components were identified. An average composition was estimated as follows: linoleic acid (44.4-55.7%), a-linolenic acid (18.6-31.4%), oleic acid (13.5-20.3%), palmitic acid (2.3-3.3%), stearic acid (1-2.5%), octadecenoic acid (0.38-0.72%), eicosenoic acid (0.3-0.7%), eicosadienoic acid (0-0.16%), erucic acid (0.03-0.17%) and minor fatty acids. The results indicate that rose fruits are a rich source of unsaturated fatty acids, especially in R. rubiginosa, R. rugosa and R. dumalis. There were statistically significant (p<0.05) differences in fatty acid compositions of some species. Fatty acids were suggested to have a potential chemotaxonomic value in this genus.

Opis:
Ellagic acid (EA) is a natural antioxidant, belonging to the group of polyphenolic compounds. It displays a broad spectrum of pro-health effects, ranging from the prevention of cancer to antiviral properties. It is present in many fruit from the rose family (Rosaceae): strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and walnuts as well as cranberries and grapes. The available literature states that the fruit of roses, in addition to their aesthetic and functional applications, also show therapeutic properties, which, among other things, are associated with a high content of polyphenols, including ellagic acid derivatives. The aim of this research was to determine the differences in the content of free ellagic acid in the fruit of selected rose species. The test material consisted of freeze-dried sublimation and ground fruit from the following species of roses: R. canina, R. moyesii, R. pendulina. The fruit was separated into two fractions: flesh and seeds. Quantitative analysis of free ellagic acid was carried out by spectrofluorimetry. The free EA was present both in the flesh and in the seeds of the studied species of roses. Its content in the mentioned fractions varied depending on the species. The flesh of R. pendulina was characterised by the highest level of EA in free form (247.72 μg·g–1 of dry weight). The seeds of R. moyesii proved to be the most abundant in free EA (105.69 μg·g–1 of dry weight).
