Opis:
This study presents a new simple correlation between friction sensitivity of nitramines and their molecular structures. This novel correlation can help chemists and chemical engineers to predict the friction sensitivity of new nitramines without using any experimental data, which is important for safety in industrial processes. The new correlation can also help to elucidate the mechanism of initiation of energetic materials by frictional stimuli. This new method assumes that friction sensitivity of a nitramine of general formula CaHbNcOd can be expressed as a function of the optimized elemental composition and the contributions of specific molecular structural parameters. The new correlation has root mean square and average deviations of 7.64 and 6.44 J, respectively, for 20 nitramines with different molecular structures. The proposed new method was also tested for 11 nitramines containing complex molecular structures.

The purpose of this work was to obtain samples of CL-20 by precipitation process in a solvent/nonsolvent system, under variable process parameters such as: antisolvent kind, time of nonsolvent addition, stirrer speed, mass of seeded crystals of ε-CL-20. Received samples were studied in the aspect of their sensitivity to friction. As the results of the crystallization processes were prepared crystals of different sizes and shapes depend on applied parameters. It was affirmed, that applied antisolvent has essential influence on type of received crystals. CL-20 crystals of cuboid shape and sizes of 80-200 μm were obtained by recrystallization from ethyl acetate/chloroform. As the result of the recrystallization from ethyl acetate/xylene crystals with rounded edges were obtained. Crystals, from both samples, were mostly single and showed the lowest sensitivity to friction. Also, the crystals of irregular shape and sharp-edged agglomerates were obtained from systems with n-heptane, isooctane, cyclohexane and toluene, which revealed the highest friction sensitivities.

The infuence of water and WD-40 oil content on the sensitivity to friction of three primary explosives, triacetone triperoxide (TATP), diacetone diperoxide (DADP) and hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD), has been investigated. All of these explosives belong to a group of improvised explosives. The possibility of desensitization of these explosives by the addition of other substances was studied. Sensitivity curves were obtained for the solid organic peroxides with various liquid contents. The sensitivity decreases signifcantly with only a small quantity of liquid − up to about 20% of the liquid. Further increase in the liquid content has a negligible further impact on the sensitivity to friction. Water and WD-40 oil were compared as desensitizating agents.

Opis:
Triacetone triperoxide (3,3,6,6,9,9-hexamethyl-1,2,4,5,7,8-hexoxonane; TATP) is one of the most frequently used improvised explosives, often misused worldwide. In our previous studies, we had observed that the kind of acid used to catalyse its formation has a significant influence on TATP's properties. TATP was prepared using five different acids that are often used in improvised conditions. All of the samples were subjected to natural ageing in both open and closed vials at laboratory temperature. During ageing, TATP sublimes and decomposes. The changes in crystal size and shape after ageing were documented by optical microscopy. The mass loss was monitored about every third day during ageing. Samples prepared using sulphuric and perchloric acids lose weight more quickly than the others due to chemical decomposition. The friction sensitivity was determined for all samples before and after ageing. Neither the type of acid used nor the influence of closing the vials had any significant influence on the friction sensitivity after ageing. The friction sensitivity of all tested samples of TATP was about the same ? between that of lead azide and that of mercury fulminate.

The sensitivity of explosives to various initiating events, in probability of initiation-level of stimulus space, has a shape of sigmoidal curve. In standard sensitivity tests only one point on this curve is sought, most often the 50% initiation probability level. The usual (and most often used) method for its determination is the up-and-down method. The whole sensitivity curve can be obtained by conducting large number of trials at all levels or more effectively by probit analysis. The usage of probit analysis, improvement of the precision of the results and comparison with the results precision of the up-and-down method is demonstrated by the example of determination of sensitivity to friction.

Opis:
The sensitivities of energetic materials as well as advanced energetic solid propellants are invariably associated with the nature of the stimuli that are responsible for the initiation of their decomposition. Hence it is important to study the chemical processes involved with these decompositions. While assessing the potential application of new propellant formulations containing energetic materials, it is important to assess their sensitivity to the hazards involved during their handling, transport, storage and use. This paper reports the results of impact, friction, heat, spark and shock sensitivities of advanced high energy solid rocket propellant formulations based on nitrate ester plasticized, hydroxyl terminated prepolymer (SPB-255) as an energetic binder loaded with solid ingredients like ammonium perchlorate (AP), aluminium (Al) and cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX). The results of the small card gap test showed that they are more sensitive than a composite modified double base (CMDB) propellant, which in turn is more sensitive than double base (DB) as well as composite propellants. Deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) tests carried out for the advanced energetic propellant did not show any detonation phenomena. Trinitrotoluene (TNT) equivalence and super large scale gap (SLSG) tests have been carried out for the determination of hazard classification of the energetic solid rocket propellant. The requirements to achieve both higher performance in terms of improved energy (i.e., specific impulse, Isp) and reduced sensitivity for the same propellant composition are contradictory; one should be sacrificed for the other, within manageable limits.

Opis:
The method of sensitivity analysis of mathematical model with strong non-linear characteristics is discussed in the paper. This model focuses on friction, as well as freeplay dynamics in a car steering system including stick-slip fenomena. Because of strong nonlinearities of the model, its sensitivity indexes can not be counted by classic sensitivity variation equations and classic mathematical analysis of smooth functions.  Fortunately,   nonlinear characteristics are described with using special piecewise - linear luz(...) and tar(...) projections. They have an original mathematical apparatus which secures parametrically made simplifications and enough regularity of the model (some details of analytical transformations are shown). Thanks to luz(...) and tar(...) projections the continuity of sensitivity indexes is secured but of course, the calculation of sensitivity indexes has to base on comparative simulation investigations. The paper presents example results of simulations of the steering system action (including stick-slip processes) for different values of friction as well as freeplay parameters (kinetic and static friction in king-pins, backlash in a steering gear). These simulations concern combined open road tests of a passenger car according to the ISO requirements (ISO 7401 - the ramp input on the steering wheel, then ISO 4138 - circular steady state motion, and finally the steering wheel released, all with a constant speed 80 km/h).

Opis:
Based on the theory of friction self-excited vibration and the measured data of rail corrugation, the cause of rail corrugation in metro straight section was analyzed. Then, using the stochastic finite element method, the sensitivity of each parameter to rail corrugation was studied by selecting the elastic modulus E1 and density ρ1 of the wheel-rail material, the elastic modulus E2 and density ρ2 of the track slab material, the wheel-rail coefficient of friction f, the fastener vertical stiffness K and vertical damping C, the wheel-rail longitudinal relative slip s as the random parameters. The results show that under the support of Cologne egg fastener track, the characteristic frequency of friction self-excited vibration of wheel-rail system is close to the characteristic frequency of measured corrugation, indicating that the occurrence of rail corrugation is related to the friction self-excited vibration of wheel-rail system under the condition of saturated creep force. The parameter sensitivity analysis illustrates that the influence degree of each random parameter on the real part αi of complex eigenvalue is E1>ρ1>C>E2>ρ2>f>K>s in turn. E1, C and s are positively correlated with the real part αi of complex eigenvalue, while the remaining 5 parameters are negatively correlated with the real part αi of complex eigenvalue. Therefore, appropriate decrease of E1, C and s, and increase of ρ1, E2, ρ2, f and K can play a positive role in the control of rail corrugation.

Blade vibrations in aircraft engines are a significant challenge that must be overcome during the design and development of modern turbine engines. Vibrations lead to cyclic displacements and result in alternating stress and strain in undesired environments (high temperatures, erosion, corrosion of the surface, etc.). Under resonance conditions, stress amplitudes can increase and exceed their safety limits, and in extreme cases, can lead to engine failure. One method to reduce resonance vibrations is to increase damping in the turbine assembly. This paper presents and describes vibration damping sources in the turbine, including aerodynamic, material, and friction damping. Additionally, typical damping values for each damping component are presented and compared.

Opis:
Modelling and simulation investigations of a car non-linear dynamics with regard to freeplay (backlash in steering gear) and friction (kinetic and static friction in king-pins) is always a challenge for researchers. Fortunately, by special luz(...) and tar(...) projections and their mathematical apparatus the elaborated models and simulation procedures of stick-slip phenomena in a steering system are managed in efficient forms (without any entangle constraints) even for optimization and sensitivity studies. Exactly, the presented studies deal with problems of sensitivity of optimized maneuvers for vehicle models considering freeplay / friction effects. Double lane change maneuvers (overtaking and avoiding) are discussed. A criterion function refers to several evaluations (precision of maneuver, calm steering, feeling of comfortable travel). The optimization of steering wheel angle signal is done on a reference model with "nominal" freeplay and friction parameters. Such input signal is applied to a "real" vehicle having "real" freeplay and friction parameters. The differences of output signals as well as differences between criterion function values are a subject of sensitivity analysis. The sensitivity of reference models on a variation of freeplay and friction parameters appears as important from theoretical as well as practical points of view. The paper takes up the problems of sensitivity analysis of steering system model applied for synthesis steering algorithms for a double lane change maneuver.

Opis:
The torsional vibrations that occur in the motorcycle steering system pose a significant problem for motorcyclist's safety. These vibrations are particularly conspicuous in the motorcycles operated with high dynamic loads, where the impact of freeplay and friction emerges due to mechanical wear. The vibrations generated in the motorcycle steering system in the presence of freeplay and friction have peculiar nonlinear nature typical of stick-slip processes. Due to the threshold-like phenomena reflected in the nonlinearities related to freeplay and friction, it is difficult to simulate the behaviour of such systems and comprehensive preliminary research must be first carried out for this purpose. In this paper, simulation tests of the torsional vibrations that occur in a simplified equivalent model of the steering system (torsional pendulum) have been described. A mathematical model of the system has been given, inclusive of an original method of generating external inputs. Computer software developed in the Matlab-Simulink environment has been presented. The impact of computational procedures on simulation results, including impact of the method used to implement the slick-slip model in the simulation program, impact of the type of the algorithms used to integrate differential equations, and impact of the preset numerical parameters, has been analysed.

Purpose: This article uses soft computing-based techniques to elaborate a study on the prediction of the friction angle of clay. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 30 data points were collected from the literature to predict the friction angle of the clay. To achieve the friction angle, the independent parameters sand content, silt content, plastic limit and liquid limit were used in the soft computing techniques such as artificial neural networks, M5P model tree and multi regression analysis. Findings: The major findings from this study are that the artificial neural networks are predicting the friction angle of the clay accurately than the M5P model and multi regression analysis. The sensitivity analysis reveals that the clay content is the major influencing independent parameter to predict the friction angle of the clay followed by sand content, liquid limit and plastic limit. Research limitations/implications: The proposed expressions can used to predict the friction angle of the clay accurately but can be further improved using large data for a wider range of applications. Practical implications: The proposed equations can be used to calculate the friction angle of the clay based on sand content, silt content, plastic limit and liquid limit. Originality/value: There is no such expression available in the literature based on soft computing techniques to calculate the friction angle of the clay.

Opis:
A vibration analysis method has been described, where time functions are represented in the “phase plane”; for free vibrations, the representations are classic phase portraits. In the case of vibrations forced with sinusoidal inputs, the representations are Lissajous figures and their stroboscopic expansions to “Poincaré maps”. For the purposes of presentation of the research method proposed, the analyses of free and forced vibrations of a system close to the motorcycle steering system have been described, with the system being modelled and simulated in the Matlab-Simulink environment and with the stick-slip processes being taken into account. The calculation results depict not only the essence of the method of analysing vibrations in the phase plane but also the impact of selected model parameters (in this case, related to freeplay and friction) and measurement disturbances on the representation results. The analysis method shown is a solution alternative to the classic spectral analyses.
W celu prezentacji proponowanej metody badawczej relacjonowane są analizy drgań swobodnych i wymuszonych dotyczące układu zbliżonego do układu kierowniczego (UK) motocykla modelowanego i symulowanego w środowisku Matlab-Simulink, z uwzględnieniem procesów stick-slip.
