Opis:
Wear of dental materials used for permanent dental fillings has a significant impact on their lifetime. Wear products generated during chewing process involving direct tribological contact between a composite and tooth enamel can cause damage not only to enamel itself but also to the entire tooth structure thus affecting the patient’s the health. It is essential therefore to assess the process of wear rates as well as the usefulness and effectiveness of the method used to measure these values. As there are a number of different methods used to quantify the loss of dental materials subjected to friction, eg.: scanning digital 3D models of dental casts, confocal microscope scanning or profilographometer measurements, the authors chose to analyze two selected research methods using confocal microscopy and profilographometer to assess their effectiveness. Two commercially available composite dental materials, i.e. ES and FFE previously subjected to friction tests in contact with human dental enamel, were used for the analysis.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate wear and friction behaviour of tooth enamel against selected dental restorative materials. Methods: The experimental material was obtained under simulated mastication, during which human tooth enamel was subjected to friction and wear in contact with composite dental materials: Estelite Sigma and FulFil Extra. Results: The results have shown that the enamel’s resistance to tribological wear is significantly higher than the resistance of the dental materials tested. The microscopic observations of the sample surfaces subsequent to the tribological research as well as the analysis of the chemical composition of the surface layer confirm the existence of diverse tribological wear mechanisms dependent on the type of dental materials used. Conclusions: Composite materials such as Estellite Sigma and FulFil Extra are characterized by greater resistance to wear and are less destructive to enamel than the material investigated by the authors earlier. It has also been stated that the spherical shape of the filler particles (Estellite Sigma) has a beneficial effect in reducing enamel wear.

Opis:
The issues relating to the description of friction with regard to plant granular materials are fairly complicated due to a variety of factors determining the process. Considering each factor in isolation is insufficient and offers a limited insight into the phenomenon of friction. Therefore, the paper presents the research results concerning the influence of three independent factors (seed moisture content, sliding velocity, load) upon the value of friction force. The analysis showed the high statistical significance of the factors at play. The proposed mathematical model proved well fitted (considering granular materials) to the observed outcome of the measurements.

The results of studies on external friction concerning granular plant materials that include, among others, grains, seeds of various plants, and powdered plant material, have been applied to the design of machines and devices for transport, sorting, cleaning, and blending. A separate and equally important matter is the storage of these materials in silos. The article presents the influence the surface topography of selected granular materials has upon the force of external friction. The research was performed with a specially designed adapter attached to the testing machine MTS, which is used to determine the external friction force of granular materials rubbing against various surfaces in a function of displacement. To define the topography of the external surface, a 3D scanner and specialized software were used. The authors have attempted to develop a model of friction taking into account the topography of the surface.
Wyniki badań dotyczących tarcia zewnętrznego roślinnych materiałów ziarnistych, do których zalicza się m.in. ziarna zbóż, nasiona różnych roślin i rozdrobniony materiał roślinny, znalazły zastosowanie w zagadnieniach dotyczących projektowania maszyn i urządzeń do transportu, sortowania, czyszczenia oraz mieszania. Oddzielnym, równie ważnym zagadnieniem jest magazynowanie tych materiałów w silosach. W artykule przedstawiono wpływ topografii powierzchni wybranych materiałów ziarnistych na siłę tarcia zewnętrznego. W badaniach wykorzystano specjalnie zaprojektowaną przystawkę pomiarową (do maszyny wytrzymałościowej MTS) służącą do wyznaczania siły tarcia zewnętrznego materiałów ziarnistych trących o różne powierzchnie w funkcji przemieszczenia.

Do obliczeń tych materiałów zastosowano metodę energetyczną, wykorzystującą element skończony o nieliniowych właściwościach modelowany energetycznie oraz oryginalny algorytm iteracyjny nazwany metodą relaksacji lokalnej. W artykule przedstawiono zastosowanie metody energetycznej do wyznaczenia odkształceń pierścienia gumowego z uwzględnieniem zjawiska tarcia powierzchniowego. Oprócz otrzymanych deformacji danego elementu przedstawiono również wyniki obliczeń dyssypacji energii spowodowanej pracą sił tarcia oraz rozkłady energii odkształcenia postaciowego i objętościowego w poszczególnych warstwach odkształcanego pierścienia.
The information technology development improved engineering calculations by global spread of finite element method FEM to simulate behaviour of machine elements, mechanical devices and physical phenomena. The main problem of using it in case of superficial friction phenomenon is that in most cases its main purpose is to calculate materials of linear properties. This phenomenon is especially important for calculations of hyperelastic materials which include rubber. Nowadays, it is widely used in technology. Friction directly influences on deformations of objects made from hyperelastic materials. Energy method has been used for materials’ calculations by means of energy-based finite element of non-linear features, and iterative algorithm, named the local relaxation method. This paper presents the application of energy method for rubber ring deformations assignment including the superficial friction phenomena. Besides the observed deformations of examined element, there have been also presented the results of energy dissipation caused by friction forces work and the energy density distribution of volumetric and deviatoric strain in particular layers of the deformed ring.

Opis:
The paper presents application of an energy-based finite element and a local relaxation method to computer calculation of deformation of a ring made of hyperelastic material. The present study considers a surface friction mechanism. This mechanism is a physical phenomenon counteracting the relative motion of the contacting bodies. Friction causes loss of energy the dissipation of which is a result of wearing out of the bodies' surfaces and heat emission. This directly affects the shape of the deformed body. The above statements are confirmed by the results of computer calculation performed for rubber ring with rectangular cross-section. Rubber is a nearly incompressible material and, therefore, requires application of special mechanical models of the material properties as well as proper calculation methods. Implementation of energy-based finite element and local relaxation method enables studying the ring deformation with consideration of nonlinear properties of rubber and its displacements in the platering contact plane, according to the value of a friction coefficient between rubber and the plate material. Application of energy method resulted in determination of the work of friction forces and the energy density distribution of volumetric and deviatoric strain. It also simplified energy analysis of the surface friction mechanism and influence of the friction coefficient value on the process of the ring deformation.

Opis:
When designing or developing friction materials, it is crucial to predict how the modification of the formulation will affect their properties. Fibres are introduced in the composition of the phenolic-based brake friction materials to improve their mechanical strength. Apart from reinforcing the composite, fibres can also affect its tribological and thermophysical properties. In this study two composite friction materials are compared. The difference between the materials was the type of reinforcing fibre used in the formulation – in one case it was glass fibre, in the other steel fibre. Thermal diffusivity of both materials was measured and thermal conductivity was calculated. Frictional characteristics determined by means of full-scale dynamometer tests are analysed and discussed. Substitution of glass fibre with steel fibre led to increase in the friction coefficient. Maximum average temperature below wheel surface, observed during the test of the material containing steel fibre, was lower as compared to the test results of the material with glass fibre in its formulation, despite higher heat flux in the course of brake applications. Thermal conductivity of the friction material was enhanced by including steel fibre in the formulation.

The paper presents the exact analytic solution to the antiplane problem for a non-homogeneous bimaterial medium containing closed interfacial cracks, which faces can move relatively to each other with dry friction. The medium is subjected to the action of normal and arbitrary single loading in a longitudinal direction. Based on the discontinuity function method the problem is reduced to the solution of the system of singular integral-differential equations for stress and displacement discontinuities at the possible slippage zones. Influence of loading parameters and the effects of friction on the sizes of these zones is analyzed. The stress intensity factors, stress and displacement discontinuities, energy dissipation are determined for several characteristic types of external loading.

Brakes are one of the most important safety systems in moving vehicles and machines. In vehicles such as cars or motorcycles brakes are used for stopping, controlling speed, and sometimes changing direction of travel. In aircraft, the main function of brakes is to reduce landing speed. As landing is one of the most dangerous maneuvers in aircraft operation, brakes must be efficient and reliable in order to ensure safety of the crew, passengers, and cargo. The most efficient brakes nowadays are friction brakes where velocity is controlled by friction of a pair of specially designed materials, which ensure stable and high friction coefficient over the course of the required braking process. The process itself is the dissipation of energy during aircraft movement which generates very high temperatures in friction materials during the time of the braking process. The materials and the whole brakes have to be temperature resistant, and we must ensure braking parameters are stable during the whole process. The same principle relates to the endurance/fatigue of the brake assemblies which must be durable enough to survive as high number of braking cycles as possible without any failure, which can result in fatal consequences. Every friction pair and every newly designed brake assembly must be laboratory tested for efficiency and endurance/fatigue in order to be used in an aircraft or vehicle. In this paper, we present the basic set of laboratory tests in the scope of friction materials and brake assemblies. Results of the tests are used as confirmations/proofs of proper and safe operation of the brakes for use in vehicles, especially in aircraft but also in land-based vehicles.

Brake is one of the most important safety feature in every mechanical vehicle from bikes to airplanes. Brakes have to be designed in order to meet safety, reliability, efficiency and economical requirements. One has to remember that not only design of brake is important but also friction material used in its construction. Without proper materials, brakes are not able to generate proper braking moment. Braking moment is the most important parameter of brake from operation point of view. It is directly connected to braking distance as well with amount of force needed to achieve assumed braking parameters for the mechanical vehicle. Stability of braking moment is important in order to get optimized characteristics of the braking process itself. Most of the brake characteristics and efficiency calculations base on assumption that braking moment should be stable during braking process. During years of tests made on full scale brakes and friction material sample tests, author observed that real braking moment curve is not stable during braking process. This phenomenon is likely to affect braking efficiency and in result slightly change braking distance. In this paper author would like to address this issue by showing brake moment curves made for different brakes and friction materials. Tests, which were author’s base for paper contents, were made using full scale brake testing and friction material sample testing. All of the tests described in the paper were performed in Landing Gear Laboratory of Warsaw Institute of Aviation in which author works on daily basis

Parameters of friction systems decline in time by the process of wear. In friction brakes, the wear phenomenon is much more visible than in other friction systems. Wear itself is on one hand not desirable because of need for brake system parts replacement but sometimes is needed due to regeneration of the friction area which is damaged for example by temperature or aggressive ambient conditions. Wear can be fatal or catastrophic for the friction brake, leading to heavy damage or even to permanent loss of braking capability during operation. As the brake is one of the crucial safety systems in both aviation and road vehicles, it is necessary to know if and how wear will be present in friction brake system before the brake is allowed to be installed in the vehicle, especially one that carries people. Wear can be estimated via numerical methods for well-known brakes (i.e. materials) or it has to be tested using laboratory methods in order to check and prove or deny initial design assumptions. In this paper, the author describes the phenomenon of friction brake wear and laboratory-testing methods of friction materials wear using brake model test stand for aviation brake friction materials certification testing located in Institute of Aviation Landing Gear Laboratory. Author also presents sample data from aviation brakes materials testing in order to show how wear can affect friction brake performance and durability.

Experimental investigation was conducted to find out microstructural characteristic changes arising in the weldments AZ80A Mg alloys obtained using the friction stir welding. Tools with three different pin profile geometries were employed during this investigation at constant tool rotational speed and feed rate. Tensile tests are performed and the tensile fracture surfaces are examined using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and the obtained SEM images are used for microstructural investigations. From the experimental results, it was observed that the geometry of the tool pin plays a significant role in producing essential stirring action there by regulating the flow of the plasticized material and leading to the formation of small sized grains having equally distributed fine strengthening precipitates. These structured grains have a direct reflecting impact in increasing the hardness and mechanical properties of the fabricated joints at the nugget zone of the friction stir welded AZ80A Mg alloy joints.

An Investigation was conducted to produce Aluminium based Functionally graded material (FGM) composites by Friction stir processing (FSP). A reinforcement strategy featuring the use of Alumina and TiC reinforcements was investigated, where holes were drilled in an Aluminium plate, filled with reinforcements and stirred using FSP. A mathematical model was formulated for the positioning of holes in such a manner that the composition of the reinforcements varies from maximum to minimum over a given length. Samples were subjected to various numbers of FSP passes from one to three with a 100% overlap and its influence on particle distribution and homogeneity was studied using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at cross sections parallel to the tool traverse direction. A progressive gradient in hardness values was observed for the surface composites at all the passes.
