Lactic acid bacteria have shown positive health effects and are widely distributed as dry products. They are widespread applied in functional dairy products, dietary supplements and as pharmaceutical products. Freeze-drying is a process of removing water by sublimation and is one of the most effective preservation technology. The aim of the present study was to establish impact of oxygen and humidity on freeze-dried Lactobacillus gasseri during the preparation of the powder and storage time. Lyophilisate was rubbed in aerobic and anaerobic condition with low humidity. Survival test and water activity was investigated after freeze-drying and storage in two different temperatures. The preservation of bacteria was improved when after freeze-drying process lyophilisate have not contact with oxygen and humidity. Survival rates of bacteria was the highest during storage at anaerobic condition both at 4-6 °C and 25 °C. The results shown that it is sufficient to crush of freeze-dried and packaged under anaerobic conditions to achieve higher survival of bacteria.

The influence of gelatinization and freeze-drying process on the physico-chemical and rheological properties of cereal starches was evaluated, and it was observed that modified starches revealed an increased water binding capacity and solubility when compared to dry starches, while exhibiting the same amylose and fat contents. The molecular weights of starches decreased after modification which resulted in the lower viscosity of dissolved modified samples in comparison to native starch pastes. As it was observed by scanning electron microscopy modified starches were characterized by an expanded surface, a uniform structure and high porosity.

Sludge conditioning is an important stage in sludge management. In the present study, a sequence of freeze/thaw-electro-Fenton process was designed and specific resistance filtration (SRF) was monitored during sludge conditioning as an important factor in sludge dewaterability. Furthermore, protein and polysaccharide concentrations were measured during the experiments. Results showed that the lowest SRF value contributed to −10°C in freezing process which showed a reducing trend by decreasing solution pH. In addition, results revealed that solution pH less than 3 caused a significant improvement in sludge dewatering; so the lowest SRF has been registered at pH = 2. By increasing current intensity from 0.5 to 1A, SRF values were reduced and then followed by an enhancement with increasing current intensity to 3.2 A. The lowest SRF value (6.1 × 104 m/kg) was obtained at H2O2 = 30 mg/L which was the best conditions for sludge dewatering.

In order to try to further our understanding of the evolution and expansion of this hot and dense medium we compare resonance particle yields and spectra from elementary p+p and heavy ion collisions.

W pracy przeprowadzono analizę danych literaturowych oraz wyników badań własnych, dotyczących zmian wybranych właściwości lub wskaźników destrukcji próbek kapilarno-porowatych materiałów budowlanych w procesie zamrażania-rozmrażania do całkowitego zniszczenia. Potwierdzono, że w procesie destrukcji betonów można wyróżnić dwa etapy o zdecydowanie różnej dynamice. Stwierdzono, że przejście procesu destrukcji materiału z pierwszego do drugiego etapu wyznacza krytyczny poziom kumulowania uszkodzeń, który może być miarąmrozoodporności materiałów. Zaproponowano sposoby wyznaczenia tego kryterium. Do oceny mrozoodporności betonu zaproponowano metodę zamrażania-rozmrażania, w której rejestruje się jedynie moment „pełnego” zniszczenia próbek betonowych.
Frost resistance of building materials is considered to be the main indicator of their durability. The analysis of degradation process of building materials subjected to cyclic freezing and thawing showed that the damages development in time runs according to two stages. The first stage is characterised by a slower damages accumulation process and a longer duration in comparison with the second stage. It was shown the time of passage the material degradation process from the first stage to the other one assigns the critical level of damages accumulation, which can be assumed for evaluation of material frost resistance. The methods to determine this criterion were proposed.

Probiotic bacteria have positive impacts on a numerous of physiological functions including immunomodulation and also on prevention of various intestinal diseases. However, acidic environment of the stomach and heavy conditions of freeze-drying process decrease survival of these bacteria. There are necessary researches on cheap raw materials that increase cell protection. The aim of the present study was to determine the impact of whey and other compounds on survival Lactobacillus gasseri during the freeze-drying process and storage. There were prepared culture media for cell protection during lyophilisation, which contained a variety of mixture whey, skim milk, sucrose, starch, maltodextrin and whey protein. Lyophilisate was rubbed in aerobic and anaerobic condition with lower humidity. Survival tests were investigated directly after freeze-drying process and then periodically during storage under refrigeration. Within 6 months of storage bacterial viability was similar in the samples containing liquid whey except for media containing starch. The results of viability did not deviate than those obtained with using the reference medium, which contains skim milk and sucrose. This shows that the liquid whey may be successfully used to protect the lactic acid bacteria during lyophilisation. Moreover, the use of whey can reduce the amount of waste produced in the dairy industry.

Pion interferometry (HBT) measurements relative to the reaction plane provide an estimate of the transverse source anisotropy at freeze-out, which probes the system dynamics and evolution duration. Measurements by the STAR Collaboration indicate that the source is extended increasingly out-of-plane with increasing impact parameter, suggesting a short evolution duration roughly consistent with estimates based on azimuthally-integrated HBT measurements.

W pracy przedstawiono budowę i schemat działania instalacji do suszenia fluidyzacyjnego niskotemperaturowego pod ciśnieniem atmosferycznym. Wykonane prace modernizacyjne komory suszarniczej umożliwiły prowadzenie procesu w złożu fluidalnym, w którym stan zamrożenia zmniejsza szybkość suszenia. Ponadto zaprezentowany został system zdalnego sterowania instalacją, której głównym atutem jest możliwość pomiaru masy bez konieczności wyjmowania próbki z komory suszarniczej.
The paper describes the principle of work and construction of freeze flu-idized-bed drying under atmospheric pressure. A modernization of drying chamber enabled one to conduct the process in a fluidized bed in which freeze state is responsible for drying rate reduction. The data acquisition and control system enabled the mass change measurement without taking out a sample from the drying chamber.

The construction of a green roof requires drainage which ought to be characterized by adequate hydraulic conductivity and be resistant to changing meteorological conditions during the winter period. A properly functioning drainage system guarantees the reliability of the entire green roof system. The article presents studies on the freeze-thaw durability and hydraulic conductivity of selected aggregates applied for constructing green roof drainage systems. The aggregates were subjected to a cyclic freezing and thawing process in 30 and 70 cycles. The obtained results indicate that the conductivity of aggregates studied using the constant head method decreases along with an increase in the number of freeze-thaw cycles they were subjected to. This means that the indicator of freeze-thaw durability can have an indicative nature in the assessment of the usefulness of selected aggregates for constructing drainage layers. The conducted studies indicate that the deciding parameter when selecting an aggregate ought to be its hydraulic conductivity, determined accounting for the changes taking place in the freeze-thaw cycles. The equations of changes in the conductivity of aggregates indicated by the authors make it possible to assess them for practical purposes.

This paper presents experimental research on expanded clay aggregate concrete. The aim of the investigations was to determine if the pre-wetting of expanded clay aggregate has an effect on the freeze-thaw durability of the expanded clay aggregate concrete. Five concrete series based on the same concrete mix design were made and tested. The degree of pre-wetting of the aggregate was varied: dry aggregate was used in the first series, aggregate with a moisture content of 10% was used in series IA and IB and aggregate with a moisture content of 25% was used in series IIA and IIB. Also the approach to the production process was varied: in series A the water contained in the aggregate was taken into account in the global water-cement ratio (consequently a reduced amount of water was added to the mix), whereas in series B the nominal amount of water was added to the mix (as in the case of dry aggregate). The freeze-thaw resistance criterion was based on the assessment of the decrease of compressive strength and increase in weight loss after exposure to freeze-thaw cycles. The expanded clay aggregate concrete’s strength and mass decrements caused by freeze-thaw cycling were used as the measure of its freeze-thaw resistance. The investigations have shown that the pre-wetting of expanded clay aggregate has an effect on the freeze-thaw durability of the expanded clay aggregate concrete. The differences of concrete compressive strength decrease related to freezethaw durability may be 2 to 5 times greater when inadequate method of calculating mixing water for concrete is used.

Opis:
The article describes conservation of wet wood by means of a freeze- drying method. The technique consists in the sublimation of ice in vacuum, i.e. conversion of ice into gas with the omission of conversion into water. Practically it means that objects are placed in 5—15 per cent water solution of PEG-400 for the period from two weeks to several months, depending on their condition and thickness. Then they are subjected to freezing at temp. —26°C at least for 48 hours. After freezing, wooden objects are transferred to a Danish made freeze-dryer where sublimation, occurs until a complete removal of ice from the objects. This method was used in the Central Marine Museum in Gdańsk to preserve a few hundred wooden objects from the wrecks of the Solen and W-21 and the results obtained were very satisfactory.

Opis:
The recycle of the building and demolition waste could reduce project expenses and save natural resources as well as solve problem about environmental risks incurred during the disposal of building waste. In this study, waste C30 concrete is taken an experimental material. The mass loss, ultrasonic velocity, dynamic modulus of elasticity and cubic compressive strength of recycled coarse aggregate concrete whose coarse aggregate replacement percentage is 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% are tested and compared with NAC when the cycles of freezing and thawing are 0, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 times. The results show: (1) Generally, the loss of mass, ultrasonic velocity, dynamic modulus of elasticity and cubic compressive strength constantly increase with the growth of freezing and thawing cycles. (2) Compared with the recycled concrete of other replacement percentages, the RAC50 shows relatively close performance to NAC in mass loss, the change of dynamic modulus of elasticity and cubic compressive strength. (3) Performances of RAC25 specimens are better than the other RAC specimens for the ultrasonic wave velocity.

The article presents brief characteristics of protective gloves, based on an example of an artifact excavated during archaeological exploration of a „Babel” granary at Żytnia street in Gdańsk. The object was treated and reconstructed in The Documentation and Conservation Laboratory of The Institute of Archaeology, NCU in Toruń. The article includes conservation issues, the program and description of treatments implemented working on the object, as well as the problem of importance of archaeological objects’ reconstruction to demonstrate technological processes and crafts of creating the items, especially to the public not being involved in scientific problems and having difficulties in perception of destroyed artifacts, deprived of their cultural contexts.

Experimental evidence is presented to support a hypothesis that terrestrial naked amoebae, collected during late autumn from cold, moist temperate soil, develop a non-encysted, freeze-thaw resistant stage that is capable of surviving winter frozen soil. Therefore, in addition to cyst formation, naked amoebae may survive harsh, frozen winter soil in a dormant or resting stage that is capable of rapid resumed growth in spring, thus gaining an immediate competitive advantage in exploiting food and other environmental resources early after the winter thaw.
