Opis:
The effects of the miniature channel-shaped scratches not detectable by the present inline electromagnetic defect detection system employed for wires’ surface defect detection on the fracture behaviour of the wires for civil engineering applications were investigated numerically. Finite element analysis revealed that both miniature channel-shaped across-the-thickness and across-the-width scratches change the fracture behaviour of the wires in terms of the fracture initiation locations and fracture process sequence. However, miniature across-the-thickness scratches does not affect the fracture shape of the wire while miniature across-the-width scratches changed the wires’ cup and cone fracture to a fracture shape with a predominantly flat fracture. These results provide an understanding of the fracture behaviour of wires with miniature scratches and serve as an alternative or a complimentary tools to experimental or fractographic failure analysis of wires with miniatures scratches which are difficult to carry out in the laboratory due to the sizes of the scratches.

Opis:
In order to study the effect of different surface crack parameters on the fracture failure of steel plate, the model was established by FEM. The results showed that the edge surface crack has the greatest influence on the fracture failure of the steel plate, and for non-edge surface cracks, the central surface crack has the greatest influence on the fracture failure of the steel plate. The larger the a/t and the smaller the a/c, the easier the steel plate fracture failure occurs. The a/c has a certain influence on the variation law of K and the position where Kmax appears.

The contribution presents the detail discussion on various problematic aspects of utilization of both fracture mechanics based methodology and NDT technology to conduct the assessment of failure of components. Consequently, it shows a software tool concerning Probability of Detection – Probability of Sizing Concept, which allow to bring both methodologies (Fracture Mechanics and NDT ) together and to meet in a joint approach. The contribution introduces in the application of one software approach, which allows modeling and simulation of real scenarios in detail, based on a variety of properties of different relevant materials from practice.

Opis:
Dissimilar Al/Ti alloy sheets were lap welded with ultrasonic assistance in this work. The influence of ultrasonic vibration on formation, intermetallic compounds (IMCs) and tensile failure load of the obtained joints was discussed. The results showed that voids formed at the lap interface without ultrasonic assistance. No voids can be observed on the joint welded with ultrasonic because the vibration during welding improved the material flow. No obvious IMC formed at the Al/Ti bonding interface of the joint welded without ultrasonic assistance. An IMC layer formed at the bonding interface of Al/Ti with ultrasonic assistance and its thickness increased with decreasing the welding speed. The failure load of the joint welded with ultrasonic assistance was higher than the joint without ultrasonic because the void was eliminated and the thin IMC layer formed at the bonding interface was beneficial to joint strength. All joints presented shear failure mode during the tensile shear tests.

Opis:
The recommendations put forward in the International Standards for anchorage in concrete concerning the assessment of the load-carrying capacity of anchors (the pull-out force) embedded in natural rock material were verified. Regarding the predicted extent of surface failure we have shown, in earlier studies, substantial discrepancies between the strength test results for anchorages in the rock mass and the established standard recommendations for anchorages in concrete. As regards the industrial practice and the goals of the reported project, simplified calculation procedures that will facilitate the selection of optimal configurations for the layout of anchor holes, while being computationally effective and applicable under the industry-specific conditions are sought.

Opis:
The numerical analysis was conducted using the FEM ABAQUS software to establish the impact of various undercut anchor diameters on the rock breakout cone formation. The central focus of the investigations was on the rock breakout prism, which tends to be approximated to a cone or a quadrilateral pyramid, including its characteristic parameter, the angle of failure cone . Assuming that the embedment depth and the undercut anchor head angle were constant for the considered range of anchor head diameters, it remains unclear, however, precisely how the anchor head diameter affects the value of the failure cone angle, and thus the surface area of the full breakout prism. This conclusion stands in confirmation of our former considerations regarding the impact of the anchor head angle on the size of the breakout surface. Furthermore, it is supported by the results obtained from the mechanical model simulation of the anchor-rock system, where the anchor head angle and the effective embedment depth were determined as significant factors affecting the assumed rock breakout failure. The underlying aspect of the reported investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of the non-conventional rock breakout technology performed with an undercut anchor, whose primary factors were both the pullout force and the assumed volume of the rock cone.

Opis:
The development of fracture processes in selected Carboniferous rocks from the Upper Silesian Coal Basin is described, with particular regard to the behaviour of rock specimens in the post-failure stage. The fracture processes were monitored using the stress-strain relations, coupled with acoustic emission, recorded during loading. Energy accumulation and dissipation phenomena were observed during rock loading. Cracking was recorded on the stress-strain curves as deformation loops, accompanied by significant stress decreases, and as cyclic increases in acoustic emission activity. Observing and analysing stages of high acoustic emission and stress drops enabled determination of three ways ("schemes") in which fracture originated and developed during the post-critical stage. Scheme I is damage and movement of grains and rock cement, scheme II is destruction of single rock grains of particular resistance, and scheme III is a dislocational and slide deformation of the rock medium.

Shattering of a brittle material such as glass occurs dynamically through a propagating failure wave, which however, can not be assigned to any of the classical wave. In this paper, we build a thermodynamically consistent theory based on the idea that a failure wave is analogous to a deflagration wave. Our theory admits, as special cases, the classical models of Feng and Clifton. Two fundamental thermodynamic functions form the basis of our theory. This approach allows for the construction of a new variational principle and a Lagrangian formulation. Finally, the theory is linearized to interpret specific experimental observations.
