Opis:
Background: This proof of principle study aims to investigate the applicability of finite element analysis (FEA) in Oral and Maxillofacial (OMF) surgery, by studying the effect of mandibular body height and osteosynthesis positioning on unilateral mandibular body fractures based on Champy’s technique. Material and methods: Mandibles made of polyurethane foam (Synbone®), with heights of 18, 14, and 10 mm were used to create a FEA model with a unilateral straight-line fracture, fixated with a standard commercially available 6-hole 2 mm titanium miniplate. Two different FEA programs were used for the comparison, namely: Solidworks and Comsol Multiphysics. The FEA outcomes were compared with a series of mechanical tests with polymeric models fixed in a customised device and loaded onto a mechanical test bench. Results: First, the study illustrated that the optimal plate position appeared to be the upper border. Second, lower mandibular height increases instability and requires a stronger osteosynthesis system. Conclusions: FEA’s and polymeric model testing outcomes of unilateral non-comminuted fractures were highly comparable with current opinions of mandibular fracture management. The promising outcome of this study makes it worthwhile to do more extensive analysis in order to determine whether FEA alone is sufficient for optimisation of fracture management.

Opis:
This paper presents new results of a detailed structural analysis of the bedrock of the Vistula source area within the Silesian Beskids (Outer Western Carpathians, S Poland). The bedrock of the study area is composed of the Upper Cretaceous flysch series of the Upper Godula Beds and Lower Istebna Beds. The study area is located on the southern limb of the Szczyrk Anticline within the Silesian Beskid Block. The research is based on cartographic field work and remote sensing analysis of a digital elevation model from LiDAR data. The structural analyses were supported by the extraction of the topolineaments and their spatial analysis. The results presented show that the monoclinal bedrock structure of the study area can be characterized by a systematic joint pattern, which determined the existence of faults and fault zones. Moreover, detailed analyses show differences in fracturing of the sedimentary strata and the existence of hidden fracture zones, not visible in the previous map view. Most of the faults are related to an orthogonal joint system, whereas the transverse and longitudinal faults are connected with fold and thrust structures that are exposed in outcrops and reflected in the topography. Kinematic analysis shows that the NW–SE-trending transverse faults underwent dextral movements, while the ENE–WSW-trending longitudinal faults recorded sinistral displacements. Furthermore, older strike-slip and oblique-slip displacements along faults were overprinted by normal dip-slip faulting. The new tectonic and relief data show no existence of the Gościejów Syncline in the northern part of the study area, which was depicted on previous maps. In conclusion, normal faulting and damage of the bedrock along fracture zones are interpreted as being related to the posttectonic, gravitational collapse of the rock massif. Its detailed recognition is very important for the further study of relationships between bedrock structure and mass movement characteristics, such as the geometry and kinematics of landslides.

Opis:
Over the years, many mechanoregulation concepts of fracture healing have been developed. They all assume that higher values of the stimulus in the fracture gap cause the formation of a fibrous tissue and only lower values can lead to the formation of bone tissue. A literature review of the numerical evaluation of bone fracture healing has revealed some shortcomings in the existing studies. Scientists often focus on only one of the three phases of fracture healing. In addition, studies are often carried out with the use of only transverse fractures. The aim of the study is to develop an algorithm for the numerical evaluation of bone fracture healing, which can be used for both transverse as well as oblique fractures. To conduct the research, the authors proposed an algorithm that considers all phases occurring in secondary healing: 1 – hematoma formation, 2 – tissue differentiation, 3 – bone tissue remodeling. Appropriate CAD models of simplified fracture were designed that additionally considered two variables: fracture angle (from 0° to 45°) and fracture gap (from 2.5 mm to 10.0 mm). Axial loading was used in order to generate mechanobiological stimulus. The obtained results presented a significant influence of the analyzed variables on the studied process. This proved that the designed algorithm can be used to speed up the treatment process and enable designing a more effective rehabilitation procedure for an individual patient.

Opis:
Soundless Chemical Demolition Agents (SCDAs) are an environmentally friendly and safer alternative to traditional rock fragmentation methods. Admixtures are used to change the rheological properties and performance of SCDAs. This study aimed to investigate the effect of various concentrations of chemical accelerators (chloride salts) and viscosity enhancing agents (VEAs: Xanthan gum, Guar gum, and Gellan gum) on the fracture onset compared to an unmodified SCDA (BRISTAR 100®). All experiments were conducted on Portland Type 1 (OPC 1) cement blocks. The flowability of the mixtures was determined by mini-slump tests. Results show that 4wt% MgCl2 and 3wt% CaCl2 have accelerated the fracture onset by 47.4% and 61.2%, respectively. VEAs have a decelerating effect, which is mitigated by the addition of the aforementioned chloride salts. Combining 4wt% MgCl2 with 0.2wt% Xanthan gum reduced the fracture onset time by 66.8%. A cost analysis shows that the initial price of the SCDA mainly determines a potential cost reduction by using admixtures. For a low-cost SCDA, the focus is likely to shift to saving time. This study can serve as a basis for future studies to further improve performance and cost as well as diversify the range of applications for SCDAs.

The paper aims was assessing risks of mandible fractures consequent to impacts or sport accidents. The role of the structural stiffness of mandible, related to disocclusion state, was evaluated using the finite element method. It has been assumed, that the quasi-static stress field, due to distributed forces developed during accidents, could explain the common types of mandibular fractures. Mandibular condyles were supposed jammed in the maxillary fossae. The force of 700 N, simulating an impact on mandible, has been sequentially applied in three distinct areas: centrally, at canine zone and at the mandibular angle. Clinically most frequent fractures of mandible were recognized through the analysis of maximal principal stress/strain fields. It has been shown that mandibular fracture during accidents can be analyzed at satisfactory level using linear quasi-static models for designing protections.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze three patterns of mandible angle fracture treatment by means of the finite element analysis. Methods: Investigation has been based on the mandible geometry reconstructed with use of hospitalized patient CT data. The KLS Martin mini-plates with corresponding screws were used to establish proper fracture stabilization. Models were run assuming isotropic and elasto-plastic material properties of connecting devices and cortical bone. The main masticatory muscles and artificial temporomandibular joint have been incorporated to assure mandible physiological movement. The gage loading has been applied in three different locations to cover wider range of possible mastication loading cases during daily routine. A different contact conditions have been applied to the fracture plane to simulate both load bearing and sharing behaviors. Prepared FEM models reflect the most frequently used surgery’s approaches to mandible angle fracture treatment. A specific nomenclature has been introduced to describe particular model. The tension plate, with one connecting mini-plate, two-point fixation and combined fixation, both using two mini-plates respectively. Results: Performed analysis allowed for a detailed estimation of the mini-plate connection response under the applied gauge loading. The equivalent stress within the mini-plates and surrounding cortical bone have been compared between all models. Regarding the fracture plane, the contact status and pressure have been considered. Conclusions: The combined fixation model, acting as a biplanar fastener system, presents the highest flexibility and connection efficiency.

In this work, experiments were carried out to quantify the behaviour of friction stir welded (FSW) AA5082-AA7075 butt joints under tensile loading and completely reversed fatigue loading. Different samples were prepared to identify optimum tool rotational and travel speeds to produce FSW AA5082-AA7075 butt joints with the maximum fatigue life. ANOVA was performed, which confirmed that both tool speed nad tool rotation speed affect the tensile strength of the weld. The samples exhibit a considerable difference in their fatigue life and tensile strenght. This difference can be accounted to the presence of welding defects such as surface defects and porosity. S-N curve plotted for the sample shows a significantly high fatigue life at the lower stress ranges. Fracture surfaces were also analysed under scanning electron microscope (SEM). Study of the fracture surface of the sample that failed under fatigue loading showed that the surface was mainly divided in two zones. The first zone was the area of fatigue crack growth where each stress cycle, slowly and gradually, helped in the growth of crack. The second zone was the region of fast fracture where the crack growth resulted in the failure of the joint instantaneously. The fracture surface study of the sample that failed under tensile loading showed that the mode of failure was ductile in nature.

The morphology of G20Mn5 specimens made of non-modified and rare earth metals (REM) modified cast steel was investigated. Molten metal was treated with a cerium-rich mischmetal contain 49.8% Ce, 21.8% La, 17.1% Nd, 5.5% Pr and 5.35% other rare earth metals making up the balance. The melting, quenching (920°C/water) and tempering (720°C/air) were performed under industrial conditions. Analysis included G20Mn5 cast steel fracture specimens subjected to Charpy V-notch impact testing at 20°C, -30°C and -40°C. The purpose of the analysis was to determine the influence of REM on the microstructure and mechanical properties of G20Mn5 cast steel and the REM effect on the morphology, impact strength and character of the fracture surfaces. In addition, a description of the mechanism by which fracture occurred in the two materials was proposed. The author demonstrated the beneficial effects of adding REM to molten steel, manifested by a 20 - 40% increase in impact toughness, depending on test temperature, as compared to the non-modified cast steel. Important findings included more than 100% increase in impact strength in comparison with the required impact toughness of 27J at -40C for heat treated steels (EN 10213).

The article presents the results of research concerning AlCu4MgSi alloy ingots produced using horizontal continuous casting process under variable conditions of casting speed and cooling liquid flow through the crystallizer. The mechanical properties and structure of the obtained ingots were correlated with the process parameters. On the basis of the obtained results, it has been shown that depending on the cooling rate and the intensity of convection during solidification, significant differences in the mechanical properties and structure and of the ingots can occur. The research has shown that, as the casting speed and the flow rate of the cooling liquid increase, the hardness of the test samples decreases, while their elongation increases, which is related to the increase of the average grain size. Also, the morphology of the intermetallic phases precipitations lattice, as well as the centerline porosity and dendrite expansion, significantly affect the tensile strength and fracture mechanism of the tested ingots.

Analysis of cracked cruciform specimens under biaxial loading conditions is very important and closer to reality in the study of behavior of marine, naval, aeronautical and railway structures. The aim of this work is to examine the evolution of fracture parameters in a combined mixed mode of an aluminum alloy A6082-T6 cruciform specimen as a function of the biaxial loading with different ratios. To this end, the effects of main parameters, such as load ratio, crack length, crack orientation and non-proportional loading coefficient have been analyzed and discussed in order to highlight fracture toughness of the studied material. The results show that the finite element method is a useful tool for calculation of crack characteristics in the mechanics of biaxial fracture. According to the obtained results, a non-proportional evolution of the fracture parameters, namely, the SIFs KI and KII , T-stress, and the biaxiality parameter was observed. Indeed, the latter depends considerably on the crack length, the angle of crack orientation and the applied biaxial loading. Detailed concluding remarks are presented at the end of this work.

TDCB specimens were designed for mode III type with thickness as a variable and performed a fatigue experiment on them by thickness. As the result, the load value of all specimens peaks under 0 to 25 cycles and decreases as the cycles increase. As the specimen thickens by 10 mm, the maximum load value is 1.2 times. When the thickness increases by 20 mm, the maximum value increases by 1.5 times. This study result can be utilized by investigating the mechanical characteristics of TDCB specimens for mode III type under fatigue loading conditions systematically and efficiently.

Ankle fractures are complex injuries with variable prognoses that depend upon many factors. The aim of the treatment is to restore the ankle joint biomechanical stability with maximum range of motion. Most ankle fractures are fibular fractures, which have a typical oblique fracture line in the distal fibula located in the area of the tibiofibular syndesmosis. The aim of this study was to simulate numerically several fixation techniques of the distal fibular fractures, evaluate their stability, determine their impact on surrounding tissue load, and correlate the results to clinical treatment experience. The following three models of fibular fracture fixation were used: (a) plate fixation with three screws attached above/below and lag screws, (b) plate fixation with two screws attached above/below and lag screws, and (c) three lag screws only. All three fracture fixation models were analyzed according to their use in both healthy physiological bone and osteoporotic bone tissue. Based on the results of Finite Element Analysis for these simulations, we found that the most appropriate fixation method for Weber-B1 fibular fractures was an unlocked plate fixation using six screws and lag screws, both in patients with physiological and osteoporotic bone tissue. Conversely, the least appropriate fixation method was an unlocked plate fixation with four screws and lag screws. Although this fixation method reduces the stress on patients during surgery, it greatly increased loading on the bone and, thus, the risk of fixation failure. The final fixation model with three lag screws only was found to be appropriate only for very limited indications.

In the present study, mechanical properties of 0.25Li2O.2SiO2-0.75BaO.2SiO2 glass-ceramic were investigated. The trans-formations‘ temperatures were determined by DTA instrument. The optimum nucleation temperature was found to be 540°C. This suggested the crystallization temperatures as 675, 720 and 800°C. After carrying out crystallization heat treatments, Vickers indentation test was applied. In order to determine the indentation fracture toughness (KIC), crack half-length ‚c‘ of the samples was measured. To calculate KIC, Young’s modulus, E and the measured hardness, Hv were used. Using KIC and probability of fracture ‚P‘, ln ln[1/(1 − P)] – ln KIC graph was drawn based on the Weibull distribution equation. Consequently, Weibull modulus, ‚m‘ and scale parameter, ‚K0‘ were determined and compared with each other.

Attention is drawn to the large discrepancy of results of fracture prediction and experimental data for six considered criteria. Based on own results, a new ductile fracture criterion for notched specimens is proposed. In the criterion, it is assumed that fracture initiation occurs when the maximum normal stress reaches a critical value depending on the maximum value of plastic shear strain.
