Opis:
The fossil record of fungi is now available from all Phanerozoic periods. In this paper, the most important and interesting taxa from subsequent periods were reviewed, to elucidate recognition of some of directions of fungal and pseudofungal evolution in changing paleoecosystems. In the three decades since the publication of the classical Pirozynski's paper (1976), many new taxa of fossil fungi have been discovered. Our knowledge of their relationships with other co-existing organisms has also expanded. Records of fossil Oomycota and Chytridiomycota are known from Precambrian. According to Retallack (1994), some of Ediacaran fossils can be interpreted as lichens. All presently known main groups of fungi were represented in the Paleozoic. Records of Glomales (Redecker et al., 2000) in Ordovician rocks seems to have a special significance for research on the evolution of mycorrhiza. This group of fungi can be respected as potential partners of mycorrhizal interactions with first terrestrial plants. Great diversity of fungi existed during the Mesozoic. During the Cenozoic (the only time span with fungal fossils reported from Poland), with diversification of climatic conditions and development of plant assemblages, they achieved the present stage of development.

The conulariids, an enigmatic fossil group believed to be of cnidarian (scyphozoan) affinity, have four−sided, acutely pyramidal exoskeletons terminated in apertural closures. To date, three main closure types have been recognised in conulariids (plicated, triangular lappets, and lobate lappets) but the first type is poorly illustrated in the literature. Here we present the first photographic illustration of an unequivocal plicated closure in Metaconularia? anomala, based on study of the rich (1700+ specimens) material from the Upper Ordovician of the Prague Basin. This closure is formed by inwardly folded, triangular lappets centred on each of the four faces, with kite−shaped elements centred on the four corners forming a webbing between the lappets. Plicated closures were evidently rare in conulariids and restricted to a few Ordovician species.

Opis:
A current paradigm accepts the presence of weakly biomineralized animals only, barely above a low metazoan grade of organization in the terminal Neoproterozoic (Ediacaran), and a later, early Cambrian burst of well skeletonized animals. Here we report new assemblages of primarily calcareous shelly fossils from upper Ediacaran (553–542 Ma) carbonates of Spain and Russia (Siberian Platform). The problematic organism Cloudina is found in the Yudoma Group of the southeastern Siberian Platform and different skeletal taxa have been discovered in the terminal Neoproterozoic of several provinces of Spain. New data on the morphology and microstructure of Ediacaran skeletal fossils Cloudina and Namacalathus indicate that the Neoproterozoic skeletal organisms were already reasonably advanced. In total, at least 15 skeletal metazoan genera are recorded worldwide within this interval. This number is comparable with that known for the basal early Cambrian. These data reveal that the terminal Neoproterozoic skeletal bloom was a real precursor of the Cambrian radiation. Cloudina, the oldest animal with a mineralised skeleton on the Siberian Platform, characterises the uppermost Ediacaran strata of the Ust’−Yudoma Formation. While in Siberia Cloudina co−occurs with small skeletal fossils of Cambrian aspect, in Spain Cloudina−bearing carbonates and other Ediacaran skeletal fossils alternate with strata containing rich terminal Neoproterozoic trace fossil assemblages. These finds treated together provide a possibility to correlate transitional Neoproterozoic– lower Cambrian strata around the world. Such a correlation concurs with available isotope and radiometric data and indicates that typical Ediacaran shelly fossils have not crossed the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary.

Neuroptera is one of the smaller ingroups of Holometabola, the ingroup of Insecta characterised by “complete” metamorphosis. Neuroptera comprises about 6000 species in the modern fauna, but appears to have been more diverse in the past. While adults distantly resemble certain moths or damselflies, the larval forms of Neuroptera are mostly fierce predators with prominent venom-injecting stylets. The most well-known of these larvae are probably those of antlions. Antlions and their closer relatives (silky lacewings, split-footed lacewings, ribbon-winged lacewings, spoon-winged lacewings, and owlflies) form a distinct monophyletic ingroup of Neuroptera, Myrmeleontiformia, hence the antlion-like forms. The fossil record of antlion-like larvae dates back far into the Cretaceous; many forms are known by exceptionally wellpreserved specimens entrapped in amber. The oldest fossil record of a neuropteran larva (not an antlion-like form) comes from Lebanese amber. Interestingly, the supposedly oldest record of an antlion-like larva is preserved in rock and comes from the famous Lower Cretaceous Crato Formation. We re-evaluate this fossil based on high-resolution composite photography. Due to the non-availability of many key characters, standard procedures for identifying the specimen to a more narrow ingroup remains challenging. Therefore, we used a morphometric approach. A combination of non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS), parallel coordinate plots and discriminant function analysis indicates that the fossil is a representative of the group Ascalaphidae (owlflies) + Myrmeleontidae (antlions). We discuss implications of this result for the fossil record of neuropteran larvae. These include the rather derived morphology of the oldest fossil larva of Myrmeleontiformia in contrast to previous expectations. Furthermore, fossils from soil dwellers can not only be expected to be found in amber, but also as compression fossils.

Dispersed miospore and pollen assemblages are described from the Radnice Basin, Middle Pennsylvanian, Czech Republic. Conversion factors (R-values) were produced by comparing the palynological data with quantified macrofloral data, to relate the percentages of spore/pollen taxa to those of the major plant groups that produced them. Among arborescent lycopsids, the miospore and macroplant counts are more or less equal. In other lycopsids miospores are strongly over-represented, as their macroplant remains were relatively fewer than would be suggested by the proportion of their spores in miospore spectra. Sphenophyll and calamitid macroplants were also relatively fewer than are their spores as a proportion of palynological spectra. By contrast, macroplants of ferns and cordaites are relatively more numerous than are their miospores and pollen in palynological spectra.

It is attributed to upogebiid decapod crustaceans. Parmaichnus differs from Psilonichnus by the presence of turning chambers in the upper part of the burrow. The turning chambers are considered to be an important taxonomic feature of upogebiid burrows. P. stironensis occurs together with Thalassinoides cf. paradoxicus (produced probably by callianassid crustaceans) and wide U−shaped pyritised cylinders (supposedly produced by balanoglossid hemichordates).

Opis:
New fossils of the family Ciconiidae from Pliocene hominid localities in Chad and Ethiopia are described, and several are shown to belong to Leptoptilos falconeri, originally known from the late Pliocene of the Siwalik Hills of India. Comparisons with all the hitherto known species of large Ciconiidae, and with an enlarged sample representing extant species, lead to a re−evaluation of some extinct taxa. Several synonymies are proposed, reflecting better the past diversity for this group. L. pliocenicus (Pliocene, Ukraine) is equivalent to L. cf. falconeri. Cryptociconia indica (late Pliocene, Siwalik Hills) belongs to Leptoptilos, and is probably either extant L. dubius or female L. falconeri. L. siwalicensis, from the same locality and also tentatively reported from the late Miocene of Northern Pakistan, is better referred to as Leptoptilini gen. et sp. indet. We consider the two following species as valid. L. titan (Pleistocene, Java) may be a late offshot of the lineage of L. falconeri. L. richae (late Miocene, Tunisia) is the size of L. crumeniferus, and is distinct from L. falconeri. Thus, L. falconeri remains the only ascertained extinct Pliocene species in the tribe Leptoptilini. It was a widespread “giant” marabou stork, in the Pliocene of southern Asia, as well as northern and eastern Africa where it coexisted with different Pliocene hominids, and probably eastern Europe. It weighed up to about 20 kg, reached 2 m in height, and had probably slightly reduced forelimbs. It became extinct by the end of the Pliocene. L. falconeri is an example of a biogeographical link at the species level between the African and Eurasian faunas in the Pliocene. The fossil record indicates the presence of at least one other lineage in Africa since the early Miocene, similar in size to the extant L. crumeniferus.

Opis:
The Great Pyramid in Giza is the most researched and most recognisable object from the ancient world (Arnold 1991, Raynaud et al. 2008). Observations of its walls showed difference in colour of some limestone blocks used for building its core. Different colour of blocks results from the amount of fossil shells contained in the limestone. The large number of fossils not only gives the limestone its colour but is also responsible for its hardness. (Badawy 2005). Blocks made of this type of limestone form a triangle in all four walls of the pyramid. Precision of masonry and their fitting is better than that of blocks made of other kind of limestone. The triangles in the pyramid walls were made from a special type of limestone. The Giza plateau consists mainly of middle Eocene nummulite limestone which belongs to the Mokkatam formation. The limestone is partly overlain by late Eocene limestone of the Maadzi formation (Lehner 2004). The main purpose of this paper is to determine the mineralogical and petrographic composition of the blocks, which were used to build the Great Pyramid. Due to the insufficient amount of the veneer blocks, the study focuses on the stones which were used to build the core of the pyramid (Folk & Campbell 1992). According to the author, the better preserved blocks forming the triangles occupy the central parts of the pyramid walls. The best preserved blocks are observed in the first layer. They lay in the distance of 40 m from the corners of the pyramid and they were put in the central part of the pyramid’s foundation. In each subsequent layer their number is decreasing from the both sides. And thus, occurrence of this type of limestone ends up with the single block in the 19th layer, in the central part of each wall. These blocks are lighter and precisely fitted. They are arranged in a characteristic way and create a triangle-shaped feature. The same elements are visible in the next three walls of the Great Pyramid at Giza. The discovery of triangles in four walls of the Great Pyramid broadens our knowledge about its construction. The triangles have been unnoticed through the ages. After presenting the paper by the author, each person will be able to see the triangles without a problem, even on old photographs (Zalewski 2004, 2006). Concluding, the four triangles located at the base of the Great Pyramid at Giza are visible in the four walls of the pyramid. The best visible of them is the triangle located in the western wall, topped with a single stone. It is in the 19th layer of the stones, 16 m 65 cm high. According to the author’s calculations, the angle of all the above-mentioned triangles in its top amounts 155°. The length of its base is about 150 meters.

Opis:
Neither allopatric speciations nor extinctions of lineages are directly observable in the fossil record. This significantly reduces the value of inferred durations of taxa as a basis for studies on patterns of evolution. The ranges of taxa detected in rock strata are inevitably shorter than the real durations of lineages. Rates of evolution estimated by counting reported ranges of taxa therefore appear higher than they really were. Biometric studies of gradually evolving lineages indicate that the durations of ‘species’ (morphologies) were actually many times longer. Therefore, the ancestor-descendant relationships along monospecific lineages remain the most important subjects of study in evolutionary paleontology. A way, in which an ancestor-descendant hypothesis can be falsified, is presented.

We describe and interpret Undichna septemsulcata isp. nov., from the fluvial Old Red Sandstone deposits of the Early Devonian Wood Bay Formation, of Northern Spitsbergen (Svalbard). Its delicate scratch pattern, comprising one unpaired median groove and three pairs of lateral grooves, all with a regular in−phase sinusoidal wave pattern of equal wavelength, allow the reconstruction of the number, position and relative spacing of the fins. The comparatively high−amplitude median groove is attributed to the main propelling action of the tail or caudal fin, the inner pair of the lateral grooves to the action of the pelvic fins, and the low−amplitude outer set of duplicate grooves to bifurcated pectoral fins, respectively. The in−phase geometric pattern is explained by a distance between the unpaired fin (caudal or anal fin) to the pectoral fins corresponding to one wavelength and a position of the pelvic fins half way in between. The direction of movement and the mode of locomotion of the trace maker (a carangiform to ostraciiform type) are deduced. This analysis is leading to an acanthodian (possibly Diplacanthus) as the most probable trace maker. By being Pragian or early Emsian (Early Devonian) in age, according to vertebrate and palynomorph biostratigraphy, these specimens are among the world’s oldest trace fossils made by a vertebrate.

An earlier hypothesis concerning the origin of chaetognaths from protoconodonts found additional support in new discoveries and in recent structural, chemical and molecular investigations. The new findings show that the head armature of protoconodonts was composed not only of grasping spines but also of much smaller spicules corresponding in size and shape to the chaetognath teeth. Grasping spines of protoconodonts were originally built mainly of an organic substance. Their original composition was changed by secondary phosphatisation. The thickest layer of the protoconodont spines was originally constructed of organic fibrils, similar to those in the corresponding layer of chaetognaths. Recent molecular investigations show that the chaetognath lineage separated in the early stage of metazoan radiation, which fits the presented hypothesis. Described are some previously unknown structural details of chaetognath grasping spines, including composition of the outer layer and the origin of their distinctive tips.

Several specimens of trace fossil Bichordites monastiriensis were discovered in two shallow water Oligocene sandstone beds from Valsugana (Trentino, NE Italy) representing the oldest documented occurrence for this ichnospecies. They are grazing−crawling (pascichnion−repichnion) structures and are occasionally associated with enlarged structures that can be interpreted as resting traces (cubichnia) and assigned to the ichnogenus Cardioichnus. The resulting Bichordites–Cardioichnus compound trace fossil is here described for the first time. In the basal part of some specimens, skeletal remains of Eupatagus ornatus were found in life position. This founding enables to widen the spectrum of known Bichordites tracemakers. Exceptional conditions of preservation of one specimen extending in two beds recording different environmental conditions gave an opportunity to document the effects of various taphonomical histories on the preservation of this traces.

The distant evolutionary ancestry of mammals is documented by a rich therapsid fossil record. While sphenacodontid synapsids are considered the sister−group of therapsids, the place of origin of therapsids is an enigma, largely because of a long standing morphological and temporal gap (Olson’s Gap) in their fossil record. We describe a new large predatory synapsid, Raranimus dashankouensis gen. et sp. nov., from the Middle Permian of Dashankou in China which has a unique combination of therapsid and sphenacodontid features. This specimen is of great significance asit is a basal therapsid which is the sister taxon to all other therapsids. The fact that it was found in association with Early Permian tetrapods (Anakamacops and Belebey) suggests that it is the oldest therapsid and provides the first evidence of therapsid−bearing rocks which cover Olson’s Gap. It further supports that therapsids may have had a Laurasian rather than Gondwanan origin.

Hydrophilic elements, such as sphenopsids and fems, are rare in the flora of the Krasiejów site and they are poorly preserved. One sphenopsid species, Neocalamites merianii, was recognised. It is preserved as impressions, flattened casts, moulds and isolated leaves. So far, only one small fern specimen, determined as Sphenopteris sp., has been found. These elements probably were transported to the site of deposition and did not grow where they were buried.

The Ordovician was a period with large meteorite showers, what was confirmed by fossil chondrite finds in Swedish limestones. In Bukówka section near Kielce deposits of the same age are exposed. During field works was noticed that echinoderms do not occur in three samples. It was proved that echinoderms were very sensitive to environmental changes and their disappearance was associated with a meteorite falls.

Value of meteorites can be explained at least in two aspects. From the scientific point of view they are priceless objects, which can bring important information about the very beginning of the Universe. Because of their rarity anduniqueness, the meteorites often are extremely expensive in the term of a commercial value. This situation is used by dishonest sellers who offer fake meteorites. It has happened with the paleometeorite remnants, which were originallyfound in Cretaceous-Paleogene clay boundary in Lechówka, Poland. The so-called fake Lechówka remnants were offered by one seller on domestic online shops. All grains had certificate of authenticity that was included with the sold grains. In this paper we described the most common and diagnostic features, which can be easily applied to distinguish the original meteorite remnants from the fake ones.

It was used the method of overlapping of "climatic areals" plants -- components of the fossil flora. Reconstruction of palaeotemperature ranges are made for each of the picked up regional pollen zones that has allowed to trace process of changing palaeotemperatures during chronologically consecutive phases in development of flora and vegetation of every interglacials. The reconstructions performed for four interglacials of the Pleistocene of Belarus have shown that temperatures of the warmest and coldest months were similar to each other and the highest ones recorded during the climatic optima of the Belovezhian and Muravian interglacials. The Mogilevian and Alexandrian interglacials were also similar in palaeotemperature parameters, but colder than the above-mentioned interglacial

Opis:
In the stratigraphic division of the Saalian (Middle Pleistocene) in Europe, the Wartanian cold period has the rank of a stadial of the Odranian Glaciation, correlated with MIS 6. The authors demonstrate the higher rank of this cold period, on the basis of an analysis of the sedimentary succession in eastern Poland, at an exposure of the terminal moraine of the Wartanian ice sheet. At the Wólka Zagórna site, three stratigraphic units were distinguished: A (lower glacigenic deposits – glaciofluvial deposits and subglacial till), A/B (fossil soil of lessivé type), B and C (a periglacial horizon with deflation pavement, involutions, frost-wedge structures and upper glaciofluvial deposits and flow till, with ice-wedge casts). Two distinct periods of climatic cooling, associated with the youngest Saalian ice sheets, were recorded in this succession in E Poland: Odranian (unit A, an ice-sheet transgression marked by the deposition of glaciofluvial deposits dated as 365–226 ka, ending with the deposition of subglacial till), and Wartanian (units B and C, an ice sheet transgression marked by development of a periglacial zone, dated as 180–126 ka, and then deposition of glacigenic sediments at the front of the ice sheet and formation of a marginal moraine). Each of these periods of ice-sheet transgression occurred at a different time (in the MIS 8 and MIS 6 positions) and were separated by a warm period. It is documented by unit A/B – a fossil soil with a very well developed Bt horizon – which attests to its formation in an illuviation process beneath a complex of mixed forests during an interstadial warming that occurred in MIS 7. From this palaeoclimatic reconstruction, it is inferred that the Wartanian cold period should be viewed as a separate glaciation in MIS 6 and the Odranian period should be assigned to MIS 8 in the stratigraphic schema of the Quaternary.

We briefly report on recent discovery of a new Fossil-Lagerstätte at Owadów-Brzezinki quarry (central Poland), where Upper Jurassic (Upper Tithonian = Middle Volgian) shallow water carbonates are exposed. Th section includes a richly fossiliferous horizon of lithographic-type limestones, formed in a lagoonal depositional environment. Numerous organic and phosphatic remains of wide range of both marine and terrestrial creatures, including horseshoe crabs and decapods, disarticulated fish skeletons, remains of marine reptiles, ammonites, dragonflies, beetles, and rare isolated pterosaur bones and teeth, were found in association with an extremely abundant small bivalves Corbulomima obscura. The richly fossiliferous horizon at Owadów-Brzezinki is stratigraphically closely related to one of the world's most famous Fossil-Lagerstätte sites – Solnhofen (Bavaria, south-central Germany).

Previously unidentified tiny (about 0.5 mm in length), hollow, gently curved, serrated spines probably originally composed of horny, organic fibers from the Upper Mississippian (Middle Chesterian = Namurian A equivalent or lower Serpukhovian) of Arkansas (USA) are described, and their probable chaetognath affinities are discussed. The specimens are preserved in an oval accumulation (about 15 mm long and 6 mm wide) of approximately 200 specimens within a small (about 25 mm in length) phosphatic concretion. For comparison, the grasping spines of the Recent chaetognath Eukrohnia hamata were examined. The Arkansas specimens are named Eoserratosagitta serrata gen. et sp. nov., and this genus is assigned to the Phylum Chaetognatha. The Upper Mississippian spines are also compared with protoconodonts. This comparison supports the hypothesis that the chaetognaths may have existed in the Cambrian.

Opis:
Sponges are one of the most ancient animal phyla with about 8850 living species and about 5000 described fossil taxa. Most sponges are marine and live at all depths of all oceans. Freshwater bodies (lakes, rivers) are inhabited only by a small minority of species, ca. 240 (< 3%) comprising the order Spongillida (Demospongiae) most of which are able to produce specialized resting bodies to survive harsh terrestrial environmental conditions. This highly disproportionate ratio of marine and freshwater sponges is even more accentuated in the field of palaeontology with rare records reported up to the Miocene (< 0.4% of all known fossil sponges). Only a few fossil taxa were correctly supported by strong and convincing taxonomic morphotraits at genus and species level, thus we provide here an overview of fossil freshwater sponges focusing on their morphotraits and distribution in time and space. Each recorded taxon is described in detail following the modern taxonomy and nomenclature. All fossil data suggest a clear trend of long term conservative morphology in the evolutionary history of Spongillida, although some traits of Recent gemmules evolved in a wide array of adaptive morpho-functional novelties. The majority of accepted fossil species belongs to the cosmopolitan family Spongillidae. The genera Oncosclera and Potamophloios of the family Potamolepidae seem to have had, in the past, a much larger geographic range than today. A synthesis of fossil taxa morphotraits is also provided in an Appendix 1.

During the last two decades, an abundant selachian assemblage has been collected from the late Ypresian (NP12) fossiliferous sands of Prémontré (Aisne, northern France) but has received little attention. Sharks of the family Triakidae (Carcharhiniformes) are particularly well represented and all are described and figured herein. Among them, two new species of the genus Galeorhinus are described: G. duchaussoisi sp. nov. and G. louisi sp. nov.; these are compared to the common Paleogene G. ypresiensis which is refigured. Another triakid taxon, the genus Gomphogaleus gen. nov., is described. Most of the triakids have been recorded elsewhere in the North Atlantic region, suggesting a wider distribution than expected for these small sharks during the Paleogene. The present paper updates the list of selachians from Prémontré, bringing the number of taxa from 19 to 33 (including 22 sharks and 11 batoids) and improving our knowledge of the ancient North Atlantic Ypresian selachian fauna. Despite this vastly improved record, it is clear that fossil data are still very incomplete and insufficient for calibrating phylogenetic hypotheses of living forms. Review of the Prémontré fauna shows that the Triakidae were much more diverse and broadly distributed than at present, suggesting that the limited distribution and low diversity of living forms is probably a recent phenomenon.

Opis:
Cladocera are a group of water animals, which are strongly dependent on environmental conditions. The ratio of planktonie to littoral Cladocera species is a widely used tool in palaeohydrological reconstruction of lakes' water level changes. Interpretation of this ratio is still unclear and requires further evidence. The simplest indicator of water level, which can be used in tracing lake-peat bog transitions, is the presence or absence of Cladocera and the character of its disappearance. In general, two models of Cladocera decline are observed. The first model is characterized by a very abrupt disappearance of all species, whereas the second one. with an intermediate stage, is characterized by domination of specific species. These two models are related to different types of terminal history of the water body. Even after a total disappearance of water in the peat bogs, there were episodes of some pioneer cladoceran species presence, correlated with periods of humid climate.

Opis:
Phymatellid demosponges are common fossils in the Campanian deposits of central Europe. In Poland, the Campanian phymatellids were known mostly from the opoka facies of the Miechów Synclinorium (southern Poland), where they occur mainly in the characteristic horizons of siliceous nodules in the lower Campanian opoka succession. Similarly preserved early Campanian phymatellids were identified in a redeposited lithistid assemblage in the Neogene gravels, exposed in the Bełchatów Lignite Mine (Mogilno-Łódź Synclinorium, central Poland). Rare phymatellids were noted for the first time in the upper Campanian gaize of the Miechów Synclinorium. The taxonomic descriptions of 16 phymatellid species presented here, including one new species, Kalpinella fragilis, completes existing knowledge of the taxonomic diversity of these sponges in the Late Cretaceous basins of central Europe. The present study also supplements the data on the stratigraphic ranges and spatial distribution of these species. The palaeoecology of Cretaceous phymatellids is discussed on the basis of their occurrence in the various facies.

The radial trace fossil Dactyloidites peniculus occurs in a deep tier in totally bioturbated shoreface sediments of Pliocene age in the Stirone Valley, N Italy, together with Thalassinoides isp. and Ophiomorpha nodosa. Long, narrow shafts running from centre of the radiating structure and abundant faecal pellets in the radial structure were discovered. The trace maker of D. peniculus, probably a polychaete, deposited the pellets deeply in the sediment, probably for reinforcement of the tubes and a gardening of microbes for feeding. This trace fossil exclusively occurs within a narrow horizon at the top of a shallowing−up section interpreted as a high−stand system tract, below a discontinuity surface capped by finer sediments. D. peniculus was formed in soft sandy sediments under stable conditions related to the latest phases of the highstand system tract. Therefore, it is a candidate for indication of similar environmental situations having a soft sandy, but stable sea floor.

This article presents the results of anatomical and growth ring analyses of Badenian fossil wood from the Roztocze region. All the wood specimens examined are classified as Taxodioxylon taxodii Goth. The growth rings of these woods are very narrow, and they vary considerably in width. Tracheids have large diameters and thin cell walls. The latewood zone is wide; the transition between early and latewood is gradual. Both false and wedge rings and also reaction wood zones are often found. These characteristics of the fossil wood make it a suitable aid to reconstructing the environmental conditions prevailing while the trees were alive. The environmental requirements of these ancient Roztocze trees are interpreted by comparison with those of their nearest living relatives, with the conclusion that they lived in waterlogged or temporarily flooded stands under seasonally changing environmental conditions and with a long growing season. The climate was warm and humid and characterized by significant variability, mainly as regards the amount of precipitation.

Restudy of the type specimens revealed that the form described as a burrow in fact is a scleractinian coral, as evidenced by its phaceloid morphology, septate calcareous exoskeleton, and twelve primary septa. It appears that there is also confusion regarding the exact geological formation, from which the specimens under consideration were taken by the original authors, as well as the age assigned by them.

From the Early Maastrichtian white chalk of Rügen Island (N Germany), a specimen of the echinoid Echinocorys ovata featuring 27 boring traces of the ichnogenus Caulostrepsis is described. Individual traces are shallow to moderately deep U−shaped depressions and show distinct regeneration textures evidencing a syn−vivo infestation. All traces are located on the plastron between the peristome and periproct of the host echinoid, indicating an adaptation of the trace maker by choosing the most advantageous position of the specific host. The traces are attributed to the work of boring spionid polychaetes (Polydora complex), grounded on the close morphological resemblance with initial borings of Recent polydorids. This is the first evidence for a possible association of a boring polychaete not only with an echinoid but with an echinoderm in general. The symbiotic relationship was commensalistic in nature with the spionid probably taking advantage of organic matter resuspended by the echinoids locomotion and feeding activity and benefiting from effective shelter. For the host echinoid, the association was moderately harmful. The soft bottom environment of the chalk sea provided very limited hard substrate ecospace for settlers and bioeroders, available only in form of biogenic structures. Echinocorys was a dominant component of this benthic community and can be considered as a suitable host for symbiotic interactions because of its size and assumed longevity.

Both species are earliest Ordovician in age, with occurrence immediately above the Cambrian–Ordovician boundary. Together with the hystricurid taxon Millardicurus, the new genus is likely to serve as an indicator fossil for the Cambrian–Ordovician boundary in Laurentia, as it is already known from different biofacies on opposite margins of the continent. Tulepyge is not closely comparable with contemporaneous taxa assigned to Hystricuridae but in its dorsally convex and coarsely tuberculate exoskeleton it resembles taxa which have been referred to Dimeropygidae, most of which are considerably younger in age.

Opis:
Several fern remains are described from the para-autochthonous early late Ladinian flora of the Monte Agnello (Dolomites, N-Italy). The plants are preserved in subaerially deposited pyroclastic layers. Some ferns, known already from the Anisian and Ladinian of this area, are confirmed (Neuropteridium elegans), but several taxa are described for the first time (Phlebopteris fiemmensis sp. nov., Cladophlebis ladinica sp. nov., Chiropteris monteagnellii sp. nov.). Cladophlebis sp. and some indeterminable fern remains cannot yet be assigned to any family. Phlebopteris fiemmensis is now the oldest formally established species in the genus. The fern family Dipteridaceae (Thaumatopteris sp. and some fragments probably belonging to the Dipteridaceae because of their venation) has not been recorded previously from European sediments as old as the Ladinian. Although stratigraphically attributed to the late Ladinian, the flora is markedly distinct from other Ladinian floras of the Dolomites and the Germanic Basin. The flora from Monte Agnello shows a higher diversity in ferns than coeval floras from this area although characteristic elements of the Ladinian of the Dolomites such as Anomopteris and Gordonopteris are missing. The new flora misses also the Marattiales (e.g., Danaeopsis, Asterotheca) and other elements such as Sphenopteris schoenleiniana, typical for the Ladinian of the Germanic Basin.

In general, the trace fossil Rusophycus, preserved as a concave-upward structure on the top of a bed, is considered to be a fossilized marking, made by a trace maker. The structures described from the Cambrian (Furongian) of central Poland are genetically related to Rusophycus. However, despite their occurrence on the tops of beds, they are not fossilized traces, but compaction-related features, resulting from differential sandstone and mudstone compaction with possible mediation by organic-rich, heterolithic sediments. The preservation of these structures probably was influenced by biofilms or biomats.

Pliocene fish species based on skeleton remains and associated teeth ever reported from the inner Carpathian area in Romania in the Braşov Basin (Baraolt sub-basin), which refers to a pike (Esox sp.). The fish fossils illustrating a large-sized specimen originate from the South Racoş coal open pit (Racoşu de Sus, Covasna County), in the so-called “Formation with Limnocardium” (Dacian, Lower Pliocene). Comparisons with osteological material of recent pikes originating from various localities in Romania are presented. The associated mollusc fauna known from the formation that yielded the pike remains suggests the presence of a lake with a stratified water column in the Baraolt sub-basin.

A new fossil lacewing, Tenuosmylus brevineurus gen. et sp. nov., was collected from an outcrop of Middle Jurassic strata in the village of Daohugou, Inner Mongolia, China. The new genus is assigned to Gumillinae based on eleven defining characteristics of the subfamily. The affiliation of Tenuosmylus including other five genera of the subfamily is discussed. Our result supports the opinion that Epiosmylinae was a junior synonym of Gumillinae, which is likely a relic of ancient osmylids based on similarity of forewing venation. Veins Mp₂ and Cu₂ have complicated branches that are generally present in extinct as well as some extant subfamilies (Poriminae, Eidoporisminae, Stenosmylinae). A key is given to differentiate six known genera within Gumillinae.

Opis:
Fossil filamentous and non-filamentous bacteria are reported from the Upper Jurassic limestones of the Raptawicka Turnia Limestone Formation in the Mały Giewont sections of the Western Tatra Mountains (Poland). The filamentous bacteria are subdivided into five groups: thin uniseriate, large multi-cell, large spiral, tapering and branched forms. The thin uniseriate filaments are the main microbial component of the peloids and micro-oncoids from the studied formation, mainly in the Upper Kimmeridgian-Tithonian limestones. The presence of the heterocyte-like terminal cells suggests their interpretation as cyanobacteria similar to the modern order Nostocales and perhaps to the family Nostocaceae. The large multi-cell and tapering filaments are uncommon in the studied limestones. The branched filaments found in the Tithonian limestones, although thinner, probably also may be compared with some modern representatives of the order Nostocales. Non-filamentous fossil bacteria found in the studied limestones consist of rod-shaped bacilli, monotrichous bacilli and spirilla; they belong mainly to the phylum Proteobacteria. Some microborings observed in the microfossils occurring in the micro-oncoids remind the ichnotaxon Scolecia filosa Radtke known to be of wide palaeobathymetric range. The thinnest microborings resemble another group of ichnofossils named “Pygmy form”, probably also of bacterial origin. The Upper Kimmeridgian-Tithonian micro-oncoids were formed mainly by filamentous bacteria (Cyanobacteria) that overgrew successively their nuclei with a few to several laminae. Frequent occurrence of pelagic microfossils as nuclei of micro-oncoids does not match a transport of these coated grains from much shallower sedimentary environments. The fossil filamentous bacteria filling up the peloids and micro-oncoids could be adapted to conditions that existed in the sublittoral zone below the wave base.

Opis:
The time variation of reported resources of fossil fuels allows to point the factors affecting them, and may be useful for their future prediction as well as evaluation of their sufficiency for supply appropriate commodities. The demonstrated resources varies due to exploitation, exploration of new deposits or better exploration of already known, changes of deposit boundaries or parameters defining them or closing down existing mines. The data on mineral resources are systematically reported in Poland in standardized uniform manner and published since 1952 by Polish Geological Institute. During the analyzed period, since 1960 up to recent year periodically appeared sudden increase of reported resources due to the discoveries of new oil or gas fields, followed by stepwise their decrease in subsequent years by exploitation. The demonstrated oil and gas reserves allow their domestic supply during teens of years only. The instantaneous repeated increases of lignite resources were the consequence of reporting resources of the discovered huge new deposits (up to over 1 bln. t each) or since the year 2009 of reported inferred resources (in D category according to the polish resources classification), of several deposits formerly reported as prognosticated only. The lignite resources of exploited deposits consist only few percent of their reported total amount, and their constant decrease is observed following exploitation. The demonstrated lignite resources are sufficient for their mining during teens of years. There is vast surplus of resources in undeveloped lignite deposits, but exist strong opposition against their mining caused by environment protection exigencies: of landscape and underground aquifers with the good quality potable water. The variations of hard (black, bituminous) coal deposits are more composed because of drastic changes of criteria defining the deposit as mineable, and closing down of several mines. Up the year 1990 the constant increase of coal resources occurred, and afterwards, up to the year 2005 their systematic decrease. It was caused by the stepwise elimination from the official resources report, the coal resources encountered below the 1000 m depth, as well as the resources insufficiently explored. Beginning from the year 2005 increase of total coal resources is noticed, considered economically mineable, by including the resources formerly considered as uneconomic. The coal reserves allows their mining during about 45 years. Great coal resources occurs in undeveloped deposits. The coal bed methane resources since 1990 year are systematically reported as the coal accompanying component and in the few undeveloped coal deposits as the main commodity. In the active coal mines great amount of methane is lost as emitted with the ventilation air.

Opis:
The impact of abandoning fossil fuels and the development of renewable energy on the global labor market is aimed at presenting the issue that affects now or in the near future most of the world’s economies (plants extracting fossil deposits and cooperating with them large enterprises and international corporations) in the field of correlation with environmental protection. The above is being realized, among others by departing in the next 20 years from the policy of extracting fossil fuels, especially coal, and is related to the use and development of renewable energy. This has a significant impact on the legal status of employees and employer. The departure from the extraction of fossil fuels will result in a sudden wave of mass layoffs around the world, including in Poland, and economic migrations, so now it is necessary to prepare an action plan for the next decades in terms of retraining employees and other possible forms of their professional activation, in the new realities of the labor market. In addition, there is a need to regulate possible ways of using renewable energy in people’s work, also in the context of the development of new technologies and their use in the work process. The development of the above should already result in the training of employees in new industries and create conditions for companies promoting the fight against global warming. It is important to deepen the study of the relationship between labor law and environmental protection law, which at the moment is unjustifiably downplayed, while in a dozen / several dozen years it will have a huge impact on human life, because climate change (and “currently” the Sars-CoV-2 pandemic) are already causing a lockdown in the world labor market. There is an absolute need to identify potential problems, adopt appropriate policies and action plans, and then successively implement them, e.g. for the transition to a low-carbon economy, but without much prejudice to the employment market and global unemployment. In this context, a coherent policy of the EU and international organizations will be important, including ILO, in order to ensure environmental and social order in employment relations, in the new reality of the 1950s, the 21st century. Conclusion de lege ferenda drawn after the above-mentioned research will be aimed at presenting potential opportunities for Poland and the world in terms of the new and employment policy.

Opis:
The existing literature, including records of both fossil and extant echinoid encrustation, is quantitatively analysed and reviewed. This shows that echinoid encrustation (number of encrusted echinoid taphocoenoses) has increased nearly continuously and dramatically to the present day, as confirmed by linear regression values of more than 85 per cent. It also demonstrates that current levels of echinoid fouling stabilised by the Miocene, while there has been a more or less continuous record of echinoid encrustation since the Late Cretaceous. Several increases have been identified since echinoid encrustation first noted occurrence from the Late Carboniferous. This trend is explained as the probable result of corresponding increases in productivity (richness, biomass, energetics, ecospace utilisation) and resources in the marine environment, including epibionts and their hosts. This conclusion matches other indicators, including the number and thickness of shell beds, bioerosion and predation intensity or biodiversity. The trajectory might have been altered to some degree by biases (e.g. selective recording, sampling effort, outcrop area, rock volume) in the same way as palaeobiodiversity estimates. Two recognised long-term gaps in echinoid encrustation (Upper Ordovician–Lower Carboniferous and Permian–Lower Cretaceous) are explained in part as bias and as biological and taphonomic signals. These gaps are caused mostly by the rapid disarticulation of Palaeozoic-type echinoids, the methodology applied here, and a lack of interest in the encrustation of Jurassic echinoids. Conversely, three short-term gaps in the Cenozoic are interpreted exclusively as bias. If correct, the present study demonstrates quantitatively the step-wise increase of productivity through time. It also suggests potential focus on further study, including the collection of new data from the field and pre-existing collections, as best for other encrustation proxies (e.g., percent of coverage by epibionts, ratio of encrusted to nonencrusted shells, taxa richness or numerical abundance of sclerobionts) in cases of large-scale analyses.

Middle Triassic (Muschelkalk) limestones and dolostones of southern Poland contain vertebrate remains, which can be used for palaeoecological and palaeogeographical analyses. The results presented concern vertebrate remains uncovered at four localities in Upper Silesia and one on Opole Silesia, a region representing the south-eastern margin of the Germanic Basin in Middle Triassic times. The most abundant remains in this assemblage are fish remains, comprising mostly actinopterygian teeth and scales. Chondrichthyan and sauropsid remains are less common. Reptilian finds include vertebrae, teeth and fragments of long bones, belonging to aquatic or semi-aquatic reptiles, such as nothosaurids, pachypleusorosaurids, and ichthyosaurids. Also, coprolites of possibly durophagous and predacious reptiles occur. In the stratigraphic column of Mikołów, actinopterygian remains are the most numerous and no distinct changes of the taxonomic composition occur. Although this assemblage differs from those described at other localities (Ząbkowice with numerous chondrichthyans, Żyglin, and Płaza with common sauropsid fossils), sampling bias has to be considered.

The earliest Cambrian Meishucunian phosphoritic succession in eastern Yunnan,China, contains well−preserved molluscan shells that offer insights into the early evolution of skeletonization. Phosphate internal moulds, phosphate replaced originally carbonate shells, and phosphate coatings show lamello−fibrillar structure, prismatic structure, and regularly foliated structure. The lamello−fibrillar structure appears earlier in the fossil record than laminar structures such as nacreous or foliated structures. It has been identified in fossil mollusks, which occur in China as early as the lower phosphate layer of the Zhongyicun Member of the Meishucunian. Therefore, the lamello−fibrillar structure appears to be primitive in mollusks. The lamello−fibrillar and prismatic aragonite is the most common shell material of molluscan skeletons in the Early Cambrian Meishucunian and equivalents around the world. Although the early molluscan microstructure is not so diverse as that of extant mollusks,it may be of use in high rank taxonomic classification as shown by the early conchiferan mollusks discussed here. These mollusks are characterized by the horizontal fibrillae that are layered and parallel, and thereby differ from hyoliths,in which the horizontal fibrillae appear to be in the form of the bundles of fibres that can branch or anastomose.

In a letter to Nature (February, 2011), Xunlai Yuan and col− laborators recorded carbon compression fossils from black shales of the Lantian Formation (Ediacaran), southern Anhui Province, South China. The new fossils, described under five morphological types (Types A to E), exhibit de− grees of morphological differentiation suggesting that they were multicellular eukaryotes. Some of the Lantian macro− fossils were interpreted as algae, but others are of unknown affinities. For reasons noted in this discussion, Type A fossils attracted our particular attention, and we suggest an alter− native interpretation of their affinities. According to our view, some of them (at least those with three faces and no globose holdfast at their base) may represent conulariid cni− darians or close medusozoan relatives. The undistorted or− ganism probably was a three−sided cone in life. We believe that our suggested alternative interpretations of the anat− omy and affinities of the fossils in question can be useful in guiding future research on the oldest currently known fossil assemblage of multicellular organisms.

A new species of the Mimomys is described from the Far East Russia (the Medvezhyi Klyk cave, Sikhote-Alin). Layer 7 of the Medvezhyi Klyk cave (1.08–1.18 m) was dated to be 13 790–14 200 BP. Mimomys chandolensis sp. nov. was found in a deeper layer (2.63–2.68 m) and therefore assuming there was no redeposition of the remains and that the accumulation proceeded gradually, the molar specimen we found is 30–50 kyr old. Due to the extent of the preservation we observed in the molar and the structure of the cave, the specimen does not seem likely to have been redeposited. Our hypothesis is that due to the warm and wet climate of the region, the vole, which became extinct more than 600 kyr ago, had been extant there by the Late Pleistocene period. The new species is hypsodont, with a few cement, a lack of enamel isle or prismatic fold; tangential and lamellar layers of enamel ultrastructure are poorly expressed.

The paper describes a system of steam boilers with the main attention drawn to the selected aspects of their operations in municipal district heating. The presented fuel characteristics show the characteristic factors in the described processes. The analysis reflects the simulations of fuel mixtures and their results in relation to the energy conversion processes in environmental aspects. Some considerations underline the results that have influence on the decisions pertaining to mixture composition. The paper presents comparative graphs and results in absolute terms. The conclusions are formulated taking into account the environmental effects, in particular localization of system elements and addresses the possible solution options to improve fuel mixtures and develop system efficiency.

Samples collected in accordance with Polish standards were extracted, the extracts were separated into fractions with preparative thin layer chromatography (TLC), which next were investigated by GC-MS. The following compound groups of the geochemical origin were identified: n-alkanes in the range of n-C14 to n-C.39, acyclic isoprenoids (mainly pristane and phytane), steranes, tri- and pentacyclic triterpanes. Based on the distribution of biomarkers and their parameters, it was established that the dominant component of extractable organic matter in sluge is petroleum material of an unspecified origin. Its geochemical features indicate that its most likely source was crude oil (or its products) of a relatively high degree of thermal maturity (catagenic stage of thermal evolution corresponding to vitrinite reflectance 0.7-0.8%). Aromatic hydrocarbons probably originated from petroleum also, though some of them can be attributed to the products of combustion or to sources such as bituminous coals, the ash from coal/biofuel combustion or coal wastes stored nearby.

Greenhouse gases are gases that increase in concentration because of human activity. Carbon dioxide accounts for the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions. The ecological environment can be improved and global warming can be mitigated by reducing carbon dioxide levels. Today, the focus around the world is on CO2 emissions into the environment. The Baltic countries that produce more electricity, such as Estonia, emit more carbon dioxide into the environment, while countries that produce less electricity, such as Lithuania and Latvia, emit less. Application of the panel data analysis of GDP per capita and CO2 emissions in millions of tonnes for the years 2000-2021 for the selected countries revealed that the calculated regression constant and coefficient for the independent variable GDP per capita are rather unreliable, which means that there is no common regression function for all these countries, but the differences in the residuals give valuable insight in the specifics of each country.

We describe a new avian taxon (Sanshuiornis zhangi gen. et sp. nov.) from Middle Eocene black oil shales in the Huayong Formation of Guangdong Province, south China. The specimen consists of a distal tibiotarsus and a complete foot with tarsometatarsus and pedal digits in articulation. A preliminary phylogenetic analysis does not resolve the affinities of the fossil, but the bones show resemblances to some “ciconiiform” birds. The peculiar hypotarsus morphology, which is block−like and exhibits four cristae, resembles that of the early Eocene Rhynchaeites, which is a stem group representative of the Threskiornithidae. The new Chinese fossil has, however, proportionally longer legs than Rhynchaeites and its phylogenetic affinities probably cannot be resolved without further material.

The marine Pliocene at the locality of Nefiach (Roussillon Basin, SE France) includes several shell beds constituted by oysters and scallops that bear a diverse and abundant bioerosion trace fossil assemblage. The most abundant trace fossils are Gnathichnus pentax and Radulichnus inopinatus, produced by the grazing activity of echinoids and polyplacophorans upon algae and other microorganisms coating shell surfaces. Other bioerosion traces include polychaete dwellings (Caulostrepsis taeniola and Maeandropolydora sulcans), sponge boring systems (Entobia isp.), and rare bryozoan borings (Pinaceocladichnus isp.), predation structures (Oichnus simplex and repaired durophagous scars), and foraminiferal fixation pits (Centrichnus cf. eccentricus). The trace fossil assemblage records short−term bioerosion in shellgrounds in a moderate energy setting as evinced by the dominance of epigenic or shallow endogenic structures produced in most cases by “instantaneous” behaviors. The assemblage can be assigned to the Gnathichnus ichnofacies, and it contrasts with that found in Pliocene rocky shores in the same geographic area, which are examples of the Entobia ichnofacies. The Gnathichnusichnofacies is validated as an archetypal one and its recurrency demonstrated since the Jurassic. Entobia and Gnathichnus ichnofacies have to be used in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic as substitutes of the previously existing Trypanites ichnofacies, which is still valid in the Palaeozoic.

New diversity curves for agglutinated foraminiferal genera are presented based on the stratigraphic ranges of 764 genera distributed over the 91 Phanerozoic chronostratigraphic subdivisions given in the ICS timescale. The data set for this analysis is based on the stratigraphic ranges of agglutinated genera published in Foraminiferal Genera and their Classification, 218 of which have been modified based upon subsequently published studies and new observations. Additionally, a total of 136 genera have been newly described or reinstated subsequent to the publication of Foraminiferal Genera and their Classification. The revision of stratigraphic ranges is part of the effort by the Grzybowski Foundation’s International Working Group on Foraminiferal Classification to compile a new Catalogue of Agglutinated Foraminiferal Genera. The mean standing diversity of agglutinated foraminiferal genera was compiled by counting the number of boundary crossers rather than the number of genera in each stage. This diversity curve displays a general upward trend throughout the Phanerozoic, punctuated by peaks and troughs of variable magnitude. The curve shows a period of initial radiation from the Early Cambrian to the Early Silurian, followed by a plateau to the Late Permian. The Permian/Triassic and the Triassic/Jurassic boundaries are characterised by small dips in the diversity record. The Jurassic begins with an exponential rise in mean standing diversity that continues to the Cenomanian. The Cenomanian to Holocene record of mean standing diversity is characterised by four peaks and troughs that are roughly in line with the cycles of global climate, with reductions in diversity in the end−Cenomanian, end−Cretaceous, and end−Miocene. Excluding modern values, the Phanerozoic maximum in the number of genera with a fossil record is observed in the Cenomanian, whereas the maximum Phanerozoic mean standing diversity is observed in the Langhian stage of the Miocene. The highest per−capita origination rates are observed in the Hettangian, Dapingian, Pleistocene, and Sheinwoodian (mid−Silurian). Linear regression analysis of the origination rates reveals a decrease towards the Holocene, in agreement with findings of Raup and Sepkoski. The highest per−capita extinction rates are observed in the Messinian, late Silurian (Gorstian), Hirnantian (latest Ordovician), and Maastrichtian. The background extinction rate shows an increasing trend towards the Recent, which is in disagreement with the findings of Raup and Sepkoski. We attribute this apparent discrepancy to the Late Cretaceous to Palaeogene extinctions of shallower−water larger agglutinates and the pull of the end−Miocene extinction event.

We describe and name Loxolenichnus stellatocinctus Breton and Wisshak igen. et isp. nov., a bioerosion trace fossil on an Upper Cenomanian oyster from Le Mans (France). This trace is attributed here to a parasitic gastropod. The characteristics of this ichnospecies are a combination of one or several, vertical or oblique, complete penetrations, and an asymmetrical attachment etching (fixichnion) with a diagnostic set of stellate grooves increasingly distinct towards the margin of the trace. By including two former Oichnus ichnospecies, Loxolenichnus halo comb. nov. and Loxolenichnus taddei comb. nov., Oichnus, is now constrained to pure predation traces (praedichnia). The numerous oysters collected from the Marnes à Pycnodonte biauriculata Formation show associated epibionts and encrusters as well as borers and scrapers. Encrusters comprise 24 taxa while bioerosion trace fossils comprise 17 ichnotaxa ranging from very rare (< 0.1%) to quite abundant (81%). The taphonomic history leading to an ex-situ condensation of these oysters is complex. Both the Gnathichnus and Entobia ichnofacies are represented on the shellgrounds, presumably alternatingly.

The distribution of fossil wood genera has been demonstrated to be an effective proxy for Mesozoic terrestrial climates. In this study, we investigated the phytocoenoses, which were associated with Xenoxylon confirmed to be a marker for a cool and/or wet climate in a boreal hemisphere (i.e., Xenoxylon-phytocoenoses) during the Mesozoic, using specimens of fossil wood. It was confirmed that Xenoxylon co-occurs more often with some wood genera than with others. For example, Protocedroxylon, a wood that is most likely related to the Pinaceae, is the genus most often associated with Xenoxylon-phytocoenoses. Although Taxodioxylon is also found in Xenoxylon-phytocoenoses, it is not found, however, as consistently as Protocedroxylon. The distribution and diversity of Xenoxylon-phytocoenoses changed throughout the Mesozoic. During the Late Triassic and Late Cretaceous, Xenoxylon-phytocoenoses had low diversity and were restricted to higher palaeolatitudes during the Late Cretaceous. However, during the Early to Middle Jurassic, Xenoxylon-phytocoenoses were distributed much farther south, while their diversity concomitantly increased sharply. From the Late Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous, the distribution of Xenoxylon phytocoenoses moved northward in Europe and even more so in East Asia. The changes in the distribution of Xenoxylon-phytocoenoses are in agreement with changes in both global and regional climates. Our results also demonstrated that, within the Xenoxylon distribution range, the corresponding phytocoenoses were differentiated along a latitudinal gradient and according to the global climate change patterns during the Mesozoic.

Provanna marshallisp. nov. is described from Early to Middle Miocene−age fossil hydrocarbon seep localities in the East Coast Basin, North Island, New Zealand, adding to 18 modern and three fossil species of the genus described. Modern species are well represented at hydrothermal vent sites as well as at hydrocarbon seeps and on other organic substrates in the deep sea, including sunken wood and whale falls. Described fossil Provanna species have been almost exclusively reported from hydrocarbon seep deposits, with a few reports of suspected fossil specimens of the genus from other chemosynthetic environments such as sunken wood and large vertebrate (whale and plesiosaurid) carcasses, and the oldest occurrences are dated to the Middle Cenomanian (early Late Cretaceous). The New Zealand fossil species is the most variable species of the genus described to date, and its shell microstructure is reported and found to be comparable to the fossil species Provanna antiqua and some modern species of the genus.

The article describes twelve recorders excavated from archaeological sites dating back to the Mediaeval times and the Renaissance. Three of them are in the museums in Germany, two in the Netherlands and one in Estonia. Six are in Polish museum collections. The flutes from five locations (Puck, Nysa, Płock, Toruń and Warsaw) are described in this paper for the first time. All the instruments from the Polish territory have been accurately measured and identified for the kind of wood from which they were made. All the flutes were made from one piece of wood of the following tree genera: lilac (Nysa, Płock), plum (Dordrecht, Göttingen), cherry (Würzburg), maple (Elblag, Toruń, Tartu), boxwood (Esslingen, Amsterdam) and spruce (Puck, Warsaw). The oldest known recorders were primarily made of fruit tree wood (Würzburg, Dordrecht, Göttingen). Interesting was the use of spruce wood (softwood) for making aerophones, absent in the later preserved instruments of this type.

The status of the vesicomyid genus Pleurophopsis Van Winkle, 1919, which occurs in chemosynthetic environments, is evaluated based on a redescription of the type material and observations on subsequently collected material. It is concluded that the name Pleurophopsis should not be used because the presently known material of its type species, P. unioides of middle Miocene age, does not show critical hinge details like nymph, subumbonal pit, and cardinal tooth 3a of the right valve. From the presently known characters, it can be concluded that Adulomya? unioides is very similar to the type species of Adulomya and Ectenagena, and it is shown that Ectenagena is a synonym of Adulomya. However, should better preserved material of P. unioides become available and confirm its close relation to Adulomya and Ectenagena, Pleurophopsis would have priority as it is the oldest of the three names.

Opis:
Palynological analysis of the 1st mid-Polish lignite seam (MPLS-1) of the Drzewce deposit (Konin region, central Poland) was used as the data source for palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic interpretations. Lignites of the 1st group developed in the middle Miocene, during and shortly after the last peak of the Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum, over a large area of Poland, and they are the youngest of the main Neogene lignite seams in Poland. In the Konin region, these lignites have a relatively significant thickness (up to 20 m) and therefore they are (or were in the past) exploited in several open-pit mines. A total of 36 palynological samples from the 6.3-m-thick seam of the Drzewce opencast mine was studied in detail. Palynological analysis of the lignite seam indicates that the area was overgrown by palustrine wetland communities, similar in composition to modern pocosins. The most characteristic elements of them were shrubs in the Ericaceae family. The climate at that time was warm temperate and humid. The estimated mean annual temperature (MAT) for the lignite seam at Drzewce is 15.7–17.8 °C. Comparison with other palynofloras from the MPLS-1 shows that the climate during the formation of the group of seams was more or less homogenous across the entire Polish Lowlands. Sedimentological data and results of palynological studies (including NPPs) at Drzewce indicate that the palaeomires were relatively distant from the channels of the river system in the Konin Basin. The fossil fungal assemblage indicates dense vegetation on damp, swampy soils and the presence of small, shallow-water bodies, with a variable water level or even periodic reservoirs, existing only during the wet season or after floods. In small, flooded depressions, such as the pools in bogs, filamentous green algae occurred. The presence of zygospores of the desmids Desmidiaceaesporites cosmarioformis most probably indicates relatively nutrient-poor (ombrotrophic) conditions. Fluctuations in the frequency of individual plant taxa (including Sequoia and Sciadopitys) are likely to reflect changes in water level and trophic conditions.

Upper Triassic fossil plants are well documented from the Keuper of Europe. Carnian and Rhaetian floras are rich in a variety of plant taxa, whereas in comparison, the Norian is limited to a few localities with poorly preserved fossil plant communities showing low diversification. The Norian Grabowa Formation in Zawiercie-Marciszów, Upper Silesia, southern Poland, contains fossils of arborescent gymnosperms, including petrified conifer trunks. In this study, we present a fossil plant assemblage, containing fragmented plant parts in multiple forms of preservation, i.e., permineralised trunks and rooting structures, stems compressions, dispersed cuticles, and megaspores. Analysis of the macromorphological characters proved the presence of gymnosperms, including the ar-borescent conifer Agathoxylon cf. keuperianum, known already from this locality from fragments of charcoalified wood. Sphenophytes are represented by disarticulated stems of Equisetites sp., and Neocalamites sp. The variation in plant fossils indicates the possibility of higher plant diversity. Analysis of cuticles, macerated from different plant-bearing lithologies, revealed a variety of conifer foliage, expressed as five cuticulae dispersae morphotypes (needle-leaf Elatocladus-type and scale-leaf Pagio- Brachyphyllum-like). Plant fossils at Zawiercie-Marciszów are preserved in calcareous mudstones and micritic limestone concretions, developed in a fluvial environment. The presence of sphenophyte stems (Equisetites and Neocalamites) indicates that local conditions were more humid and suitable for spore-producing plants, appearing in the mid-Norian tectonic-pluvial episode, recorded in the Grabowa Fm.

Prior to the crisis, the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has energy transition plan from fossil fuel to renewable sources, a measure aimed at addressing climate change by the year 2030. However, while the Russian-Ukraine belligerent relationship was not predicted, it has served as a catalyst for energy transition across the world given the increase in the price of fossil fuel. The study addressed the question; Is the effect of Russia-Ukraine crisis on fossil fuel accessibility enhancing renewable energy deployment in electricity generation in Nigeria? The study analyzed how the effect of Russia-Ukraine crisis on fossil fuel accessibility in enhancing renewable energy deployment in electricity generation in Nigeria. The underlying assumption of the study is that the Russia-Ukraine crisis will not catalyze the transition of electricity generation from fossil fuel to renewable sources in Nigeria. The theoretical framework of the study is public choice theory and it is applied from the perspective that government instrument instead of market force allocate certain need. The study adopted descriptive research design and Nigeria transition to renewable energy was case studied. Information were obtained from purposively selected government documents and website pages of concerned agencies. Information gathered were content analyzed. The study noted that electrical energy continued to be sourced from non-renewable sources in the country despite the extant policies of government on transition to renewable energy in the country. The study concluded that politics rather than emergency situation drives energy transition.

The fossil remains of a hemichordate exoskeleton, recognized as fragments of the stolons and their cyst−like swellings connected with the fusellar zooidal tubes, were derived by chemical isolations from Late Permian (Kazanian) mudstones of the Svalis Dome (central Barents Sea, Norway). These fossils, referred to as Diplohydra szaniawskii sp. nov., are the first undoubted representatives of the class Graptolithoidea found in Permian deposits. The genus Diplohydra Kozłowski, 1959, known previously only from the Ordovician and originally established as a thecate hydroid taxon, is reinterpreted as an aberrant member of the order Rhabdopleuroidea. This strange hemichordate, characterized by fusellar tubes distinctly narrower than stolon−like tubes and their swellings, reveals a certain degree of dimorphism in the stolon system. D. szaniawskii sp. nov. also displays some peculiar morphological features common to the Ordovician rhabdopleuroid genus Rhabdopleurites Kozłowski and the stolonoid genus Stolonodendrum Kozłowski.

Coccolith debris in fossil zooplankton faecal pellets and the mode of its preservation are the unique source of data on the mode of feeding and digestion by ancient zooplankters. The animals are virtually absent in the fossil record in another form than their coprolites. However, minute structural details of coccospheres and their debris in the coccolith limestone are much less legible than in modern sediments. This paper presents how clear SEM images of details of coccolith plates in complete and dismembered coccospheres from fossil zooplankton faecal pellets can be obtained from thin sections of coccolith limestone. The images allow us to study the structural and compositional details of coccolith plates as well as their arrangements within the coccospheres and fossil faecal pellets.

The shape and extent of the membranous brachioptagium in pterosaurs remains a controversial topic for those attempting to determine the aerodynamic performance of the first vertebrate fliers. Various arguments in favour of the trailing edge terminating against either the torso or hip, the femur, the ankle, or different locations for various taxa, has resulted in several published reconstructions. Uncertainty over the correct model is detrimental to both aerodynamic and palaeoecological studies that are forced to simultaneously consider multiple and highly variable configurations for individual taxa. A review of relevant pterosaur specimens with preserved soft tissues or impressions of the wing membrane, however, strongly suggests that the trailing edge of the wing extended down to the lower leg or ankle in all specimens where the brachiopatagium is completely preserved. This configuration is seen across a phylogenetically broad range of pterosaurs and is thus likely to have been universally present throughout the Pterosauria. Support for opposing hypotheses where the trailing edge terminates against the body, hip, or knee are based on several specimens where the wing membrane is either incomplete or has undergone post−mortem contraction. An ankle attachment does not rule out a high aspect ratio wing as the curvature of the trailing edge and the ratio of the fore to hind limbs also play a major role in determining the final shape of the membrane.

Term “jet fuel” is well known and recognized worldwide - it applies to aviation product used to power all turbine engines in aircrafts and helicopters. Its’ properties are clearly and strictly defined in international specifications. However, in the discussion concerning jet fuels, and in most research material, many people seem to forget that this fuel is a mixture of different hydrocarbons, is produced from different feedstock (crude oil from different sources available worldwide) and as a final product is obtained with different production processes. Thus, however jet fuel must meet the requirements defined in international standards, these fuels differ each other and as a result, differences can be observed in logistic chain and in combustion process. This paper points out some differences between jet fuels and its aim is to convict users, researchers and all people in aviation industry dealing with jet engines operation, that - when talking about jet fuel - many factors and details about final product must be considered, and this type of product should not be seen as single-type fuel, as most people see it now. The article has been prepared within the research project funded by the National Science Centre in Poland and granted with decision no. DEC-2011/01/D/ST8/06567.

Opis:
Although modern porpoises (Phocoenidae, Odontoceti, Cetacea) occupy most oceanic regions of the world, their fossil record outside the Pacific Ocean remains extremely scarce. Based on a partial skull from lower Pliocene layers (Kattendijk Formation, Zanclean, 5–4.4 Ma) of the Antwerp harbour, a new genus and species of fossil phocoenid, Brabocetus gigaseorum gen. et sp. nov., is described. The new taxon is diagnosed by a unique combination of characters including an anterolateraly widely-open antorbital notch, the anteromedial sulcus being shorter than the posteromedial sulcus, the frontal boss being longer than wide, pronounced asymmetry of the vertex, and the possible presence of an additional longitudinal sulcus across the premaxillary eminence. The phylogenetic analysis indicates that B. gigaseorum is not closely related to extant phocoenids; it is included in a clade comprising most north-west Pacific fossil species, two north-east Pacific fossil species, and the only previously described North Sea fossil species Septemtriocetus bosselaersi. Considering the paleobiogeographic distribution of phocoenids, an early Pliocene arrival from the North Pacific to the North Sea may be correlated to the early opening of the Bering Strait and migration via the Arctic. The presence of S. bosselaersi in younger deposits (Piacenzian) of the southern margin of the North Sea Basin could be the result of either a second dispersal event, or of local speciation in the North Sea, whereas an additional trans-Arctic migration from the North Pacific lead to the present occupation of the North Atlantic and North Sea by the phylogenetically distantly related harbor porpoise Phocoena phocoena.

A diverse fauna of helcionelloid molluscs, hyoliths, and other small shelly fossils is described from limestone layers within the Forteau Formation of the Bonne Bay region in western Newfoundland. The fauna is dominated by internal moulds of various molluscs and tubular problematica, but also includes hyolith opercula, echinoderm ossicles, and other calcareous small shelly fossils preserved by phosphatisation. Originally organophosphatic shells are comparatively rare, but are represented by brachiopods, hyolithelminths, and tommotiids. The fauna is similar to other late Early Cambrian faunas from slope and outer shelf settings along the eastern margin of Laurentia and may be of middle Dyeran age. The similarity of these faunas indicates that at least by the late Early Cambrian, a distinctive and laterally continuous outer shelf fauna had evolved. The Forteau Formation also shares elements with faunas from other Early Cambrian provinces, strengthening ties between Laurentia and Australia, China, and Europe during the late Early Cambrian. Two new taxa of problematic fossil organisms are described, the conical Clavitella curvata gen. et sp. nov. and the wedge−shaped Sphenopteron boomerang gen. et sp. nov.

The rugose coral genus Smithicyathus is diagnosed in this paper as massive to phaceloid phillipsastreid, with common horseshoe dissepiments and major septa that are very short in the tabularium. Revised taxonomy of this genus is based on analysis of over 20 numerical characters measured in sections and/or extracted from the literature data. Species are distinguished either by morphometric non−overlap in at least one, key feature or by geographic–stratigraphic isolation. The earliest possible representatives of the genus are known from the Eifelian of Angara (S.? emendatus and S.? russakovi). In the Upper Frasnian Smithicyathus is represented by seven species; in western Euramerica occur S. cinctus and S. mcleani sp. nov.; south−eastern Euramerican shelf area is with S. lacunosus, S. cf. lacunosus, S. smithi, S. cf. smithi, and S. lubliniensis; one probable species is recorded in Angara: S.? belkovskiense. The genus did not survive the Frasnian– Famennian crisis. Smithicyathus lived in tropical and sub−tropical shallow−marine carbonate environments, with the possible exception of the northern mid−latitudes species from Siberia. In the Holy Cross Mountains, S. lacunosus and S. smithi show a preference for restricted−marine facies. They may make up over 90% of all rugosan colonies collected in such locations, whereas in the more open−marine settings they are rare both in numbers and in proportion to other rugosan species.

The ability to see and understand the three−dimensional structure of an investigated object plays a key role in studying fossil remains. All living organisms are formed in threedimensions, but unfortunately fossilization processes often reduce overall shape, making it difficult to gather information about real overall appearance, functionality, and inner structure. Here, using a specimen of the brachiopod Terebratula terebratula we demonstrate a non−destructive technique for exploring the 3−D internal structure of fossil remains. The use of tomography allows the construction of a set of transverse serial sections in the manner used by brachiopod researchers for decades.

Clusters of small stones found in the abdominal region of three articulated skeletons of Gasparinisaura cincosaltensis were identified as gastroliths on the basis of taphonomic and sedimentologic evidence. The large number of stones found in each individual, their size, and the fact that Gasparinisaura cincosaltensis was herbivorous, all suggest that they were ingested as a result of lithophagy rather than accidental swallowing.

Latest Eocene plant macrofossils and trace fossils collected a century ago by Wiktor Kuźniar are revised and their stratigraphical and palaeoecological meaning is re-considered. They derive from marine limestones and marls cropping out on the northern slope of the Hruby Regiel mountain in the Western Tatra Mountains. Leaves belonging to the families Fagaceae and Lauraceae and fruits of the palm Nypa are recognized. The co-occurrence of the planktonic foraminifer taxa Chiloguembelina cf. gracillima and Globigerinatheca cf. index and fruits of Nypa suggests a latest Eocene age of the fossil flora. The plant assemblage is typical of paratropical or subtropical evergreen forests in a warm and humid subtropical climate, recent counterparts of which occur in southeast Asia. The presence of Nypa is characteristic of mangroves. The good state of preservation of the leaves suggests coastline proximity during sedimentation of the plant-bearing deposits.

Na jednym z garbów lessowych Roztocza Zachodniego w miejscowość Kondraty, gmina Goraj (ryc. 1) w trakcie prac rolnych, w bliskim sąsiedztwie znaleziono na powierzchni trzy przedmioty: topór pięcioboczny z amfibolitu, siekierę czworościenną z krzemienia wołyńskiego i skamielinę jeżowca (ryc. 2-4).
During agricultural works on one of the loess humps of Western Roztocze, in the village of Kondraty, Biłgoraj County, SE Poland (Fig. 1), three objects were found close to each other on the surface: a five-sided axe made of amphibolite, a quadrangular axe made of Volhynian flint and a sea urchin fossil (Fig. 2−4). <br></br> The discovery of such specific lithic items in one place may indicate that they came from a destroyed prehistoric grave. Both Neolithic and Bronze Age/Early Iron Age communities manufactured stone and flint axes. Stone axes are primarily attributed to the Corded Ware and Lusatian Cultures, and, to a limited extent, to the Mierzanowice Culture and possibly the Trzciniec Culture, while flint axes are also linked to the Funnel Beaker Culture and the Globular Amphora Culture. On the basis of a typological and comparative analysis, bearing in mind the taxonomic units distinguished in the interfluve of the Middle Vistula and Bug Rivers, the closest analogies for both the axe forms are found among grave goods of the Corded Ware Culture. In the classification of P. WŁODARCZAK (2006), the stone axe bears resemblance to type C, and the flint axe finds analogies among some of the specimens of variants A/B/D of type I. Although no co-occurrence of objects comparable to the Kondraty artefacts, as well as the presence of the fossil, is yet to be recorded in a single feature, the analysed material should be dated within the range of phases II−IIIB in the periodization of P. WŁODARCZAK (2006), i.e., around 2700/2650−2300/2250 BCE. The reference point are the radiocarbon dates determined for two graves: for the flint axe – Łapszów, barrow, grave 1: C14 3870 ± 35 BP; for the stone axe – Wola Węgierska 3, barrow 1: C14 3920 ± 80 BP and 3860 ± 70 BP.

For anatomical comparisons many specimens of Recent chaetognaths were specially compressed and dried to obtain forms similar to the fossils preserved in shales. The most characteristic features shared by the fossil and Recent specimens include: strongly elongated, transversely striated and very flexible body, large size, and characteristically diversified shape of head, pronounced intestine and horizontally oriented caudal fin. Possible traces of other chaetognath structures—grasping apparatus, lateral fins, seminal vesicles, ventral ganglion, ovaries and anus—are also present but preserved in one specimen only. Among extant genera, those showing the closest similarity to Oesia Walcott, 1911 are the hyperbenthic Archeterokrohnia Casanova, 1986¹, and Heterokrohnia Ritter−Záhony, 1911, which are considered by some authors as evolutionarily most primitive.

Here, we use morphometry of the radius in extant carnivorans of the dog family (Canidae) to reconstruct the palaeobiology of extinct canids from Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania (Bed I and II) and Koobi Fora, Kenya. We use radius mor-phometrics to predict adaptation to prey size and introduce a new method for quantifying canid habitat adaptations based on the geographic distributions of the extant species sampled. Linear Discriminant Function Analyses (DFA) and cluster neighbour-joining algorithms are employed to investigate radial morphometrics as described by 29 linear measurements. Results of our analyses suggest that a phylogenetic signal is present in radial morphometrics, even if it does not allow us to accurately discriminate among genera. A binary prey size categorisation of "small-medium" versus "large" prey can be more accurately predicted than a habitat categorisation scheme (Open, Mixed, Closed). The East African fossil specimens examined show morphometric affinities with the golden jackal (Canis aureus) and coyote (Canis latrans) and are likely attributable to the genus Canis. Fragmentary fossil specimens from Olduvai Gorge are predicted as habitat generalists (Open for Bed I and Mixed for Bed II) adapted for hunting small-medium prey, whereas the specimen from Koobi Fora was predicted as inhabiting mixed habitats and adapted for killing large prey. This study supports the inclusion of fossil Canidae in palaeoecological analyses attempting to clarify the palaeoenvironment of early hominin fossil sites.

The hyolith assemblage from the Lower Cambrian Bastion Formation of North−East Greenland is significant in that it contains several hyolith taxa that possess traits of both orders Hyolithida and Orthothecida. They possess morphological traits that seem to be characteristic of the ancestral forms of both groups. In addition, many hyolith taxa from this interval are globally distributed, supporting the notion that these fossils have potential as stratigraphic indicators. This assemblage contains genera and/or species seen in Australia, North America, the Siberian Platform, and South China. Hyoliths identified include the hyolithids Parkula bounites, Hyptiotheca karraculum, Microcornus eximius, M. petilus, Paracornus poulseni gen. et sp. nov., as well as Similotheca similis?, S. bastionensis sp. nov., and S. groenlandica sp. nov.; two opercula remain in open nomenclature. Orthothecids from this assemblage are one unnamed species each of Contitheca and Gracilitheca. Large, macro−sized hyoliths from the same formation described by Poulsen (1932) are mostly unidentifiable, although an operculum formerly identified as Hyolithes (Orthotheca) communis is reassigned to Hyptiotheca. Problematic organisms of uncertain affinity include Cupitheca holocyclata, Conotheca australiensis, an unnamed species of Coleolus, and the cap−shaped Cassitella baculata gen. et sp. nov. that may be an operculum of some as yet unknown organism. Missarzhevsky (1969) used Hyolithes(Orthotheca) bayonet var. groelandicus and H. (O.) bayonet var. longus as the basis for Lenatheca, but the specimens on which that genus is based are too poorly known for a proper diagnosis of Lenatheca.

Opis:
The paper presents the concept of repowering in existing power plant. Among technologies for existing steam power plants, the hot windbox repowering is the fastest way to respond to the energy demand, improve efficiency and reduce the pollutants emissions. Thermodynamic analysis of power plant model with fossil boiler before and after hot windbox repowering, has been investigated using commercial software. The purpose of this work is to understand and analyze the effect of hot windbox repowering on 387 MW fossil fuel power plant as well as the effect of additional heat exchangers, which have been installed parallel with regeneration system to use the heat of boiler exhaust gases. In this way, after repowering the summary power of power plant in base load is 615 MW, which has been reached adding gas turbine (176.9 MW). To analyze the model, calculations were performed in 3 stages: 1) calculation and comparison of the thermodynamic parameters as well as carbon dioxide emissions of power plant model before and after repowering, 2) analysis of the optimal value of feed water mass flow through heat exchangers installed after economizer, 3) calculation of thermodynamic parameters in values 100%, 90%, 80% and 75% of fossil boiler heat loads.

Opis:
Radiocarbon 14C his is a radioactive nuclide of carbon, with half-life equals to 5730 š 40 years. This nuclide is produced in the atmosphere as a result of the interaction of nitrogen with cosmic radiation and therefore is homogenously spread in the air. It is necessary to point out very important issue, related to radiocarbon presence. Fossil fuels contain no radiocarbon 14C, due to its age. Therefore after combustion of such fuels resulting carbon dioxide contains no radiocarbon as well. It means, that CO2 introduced into the strata during sequestration or produced during coal gasification will have no traces of 14C. On the contrary the soil gas contains carbon dioxide, produced during biological processes (like respiration, fermentation etc.) and therefore 14C is present there. Measuring radiocarbon content in the soil gas it is possible to estimate the origin of the gas (geological or biological). On the other hand, it is very important to know if there is any escape of CO2 from underground gas reservoirs, created as a result of sequestration. Such information is crucial to ensure the safety of the population in areas located above geological reservoirs. The described method enables measurements of 14C in gas samples. The technique is based on the liquid scintillation counting of samples, made out of carbon dioxide adsorbent, mixed with a dedicated cocktail and measured afterwards in the low background liquid scintillation spectrometer Quantulus.

Fossil iron meteorites are extremely rare in the geological sedimentary record. In the boundary clay from the outcrop at the Lechówka quarry (Poland), fragments of the paleometeorite were found in the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary clay layer. The fragments of meteorite (2–6 mm in size) and meteoritic dust are metallic-grey in colour. Analyses of the meteorite from Lechówka reveal the presence of Ni-rich minerals with a total Ni amount of 2–3 wt%. They are represented by: taenite, kamacite, schreibersite, Ni-rich magnetite, and Ni-rich goethite. The investigated remnants of paleometeorite apparently represent an independent fall and does not seem to be derived from the K-Pg impactor.

This paper presents the results of analysis of the Miocene woods collected from three sampling sites in the Polish part of the Carpathian Foredeep. The location in the stratigraphic profile and the state of fossil preservation indicate that the woods were transported by waters flowing from highland or from mountainous regions and then deposited and fossilised in delta areas. Fragments of 16 lignified or silicified woods were collected for anatomical research. The fossil woods were classified as Piceoxylon piceae, Juniperoxylon pachyderma, Cupressinoxylon canadense and Cupressinoxylon polonicum. Disturbance zones observed in Cupressinoxylon polonicum are interpreted as frost rings. Frost rings suggest that despite the documented existence of warm and humid climatic conditions during the Miocene period, the temperatures in mountainous areas could temporarily drop below freezing point.

The fossil record of Stolotermitidae is exceptionally poor, with only two Miocene (Neogene) species documented to date. Herein, a new genus and species of Paleogene termites is described and figured from the Late Oligocene (28–27 Ma, Early Chattian) of northwestern Ethiopia (Amhara Region, Chilga Woreda). Chilgatermes diamatensis gen. et sp. nov., is most similar to genera of the Stolotermitidae, Archotermopsidae, and Termopsidae but can be distinguished on the basis of forewing venational details. The genus is tentatively placed in the Stolotermitidae: Porotermitinae. Chilgatermes diamatensis is the first fossil termite from Ethiopia and, indeed, the first from the entire African continent.

Encrusting foraminiferans, although representing an important component of the so−called cryptic assemblages in both modern and ancient reef environments, are in general poorly described and little is known as regards their association with corals. In this paper, we describe coral−encrusting foraminiferan associations in the different facies that characterize the shallowing upward parasequences of the Nago Limestone (Upper Eocene, Trentino, northern Italy). From a relatively deep reef slope up to the shallow shelf−edge, corals have been recognized to be encrusted by different types of foraminiferan assemblages that differ on the basis of relative abundance of species, growth form and type of encrusted coral surface. The succession of encrusting foraminiferan assemblages is interpreted as controlled mainly by light, competition with coralline algae, hydrodynamic energy, and coral growth fabric.

Small round holes in the tests of fossil echinoids present problems of interpretation, the most obvious questions being who did it and why? Both have been the cause of considerable conjecture by ichnologists and echinoderm palaeontologists. “Drill holes” described from the Miocene of Poland in the echinoid Echinocyamus linearis Capeder are classified within the ichnospecies Oichnus simplex Bromley. Contrary to the original analysis, the possibility remains that some of these holes were the result of eulimid parasitism rather than predation by juvenile cassids. If other, larger echinoids in the fauna suffered predation by adult cassids, then the available samples are probably too small for it to be recognised.

Artykuł przedstawia atmosferę i okoliczności, jakie towarzyszyły powstaniu i rozwojowi Instytutu Naftowego w Polsce. W publikacji przywołano nazwiska i biografię trzech naftowców, którzy mieli szczególny udział w powstaniu i restytucji Instytutu, a mianowicie: Ludwika Stockera, przewodniczącego Izby Pracodawców w Przemyśle Naftowym i inicjatora powstania Instytutu; inż. Augusta Nieniewskiego, geologa i żołnierza, pierwszego kierownika nowo powstałego Instytutu; a także prof. Józefa Wojnara, założyciela powojennego Instytutu, a z perspektywy lat współczesnych – odnowiciela jego działalności. W dalszej części publikacji przedstawiono kolejne zmiany organizacyjne i strukturalne Instytutu, rozwój jego bazy zasobowej, infrastruktury badawczej i kadrowej. Kończący się „wiek nafty” stawia przed Instytutem przełomowe wyzwania z zakresu niskoemisyjnej i odnawialnej transformacji energetycznej.
This article presents the atmosphere and circumstances surrounding the establishment and development of the Oil Institute in Poland. The proposal for establishing the Polish Oil Institute was submitted in 1927 at the First Oil Convention. It was taken up by the Chamber of Oil Industry Employers when the Oil Industry Institute was founded in Krosno in 1931, although it concerned the area of the Western Oil Basin. The work of the Institute was interrupted by the war, but in 1944 the Oil Institute was established by a decision of the National Oil Office, in the same location as the pre-war Oil Industry Institute. The history of the Oil and Gas Institute began at the end of 1944 with the November decision of the National Oil Office and, until modern times, did not refer to the research unit founded in 1931. In this article, the author presents the relationship of the two units, their similar research areas and (originally) the same range and location of activity. These facts give rise to the suggestion that, despite the break in continuity during the war, this is the same research unit, and its history should be counted from 1931. The article presents the names and biographies of three oilmen who played a special role in the establishment and restitution of the Institute: Ludwik Stocker, chairman of the Chamber of Oil Industry Employers and initiator of the Institute’s establishment, August Nieniewski, geologist, soldier and the first head of the newly established Institute, and Prof. Józef Wojnar, founder of the post-war Institute and, from the contemporary perspective – the one responsible for reviving its activities. The subsequent organisational and structural changes within the Institute and the development of its resource base, research infrastructure and human resources are presented in the following part of the publication. As the ‘Oil Age’ draws to a close, the Institute is facing groundbreaking challenges in the transition to low-carbon and renewable energy.
