    This study sought to explore the formality styles of writing among intermediate EFL Iranian learners to scrutinize their competence in the writing skill. A convenience sample of 30 students were chosen through Oxford Quick Placement Test (2001) from among 60 university students. The first group sent their messages (essay tasks) through e-mail and the second group used Telegram. A corpus containing a total of 240 written texts was extracted from both groups. This corpus was then analyzed and compared in terms of formality styles. A detailed comparison of the two sub-corpora revealed a significant difference between texts written and sent by Telegram application and e-mails. The results of data analysis also indicated that informality and formality markers potentially function as distinctive factors, capable of differentiating between the texts sent by Telegram and e-mails. Ultimately, the essays sent by Telegram (containing 5 factors including contractions, questions, modal verbs, opening sentences, vocabulary) were recognized to use more informal styles of writing than emails. Taking the current study’s findings into account, academic writing pedagogy may benefit from a focus on employing appropriate writing strategies and techniques to accelerate Iranian university students’ writing development.

    The basic premise of the paper is that the study of formal and informal processes has moved beyond the formality-informality debate. Forms which may be termed as hybrid formalities and hybrid informalities are more and more often encountered in the literature. However, these hybrid types are pretty much under construction, and they occur in a rather disparate manner. So that, there is need of a systematic approach which would conceptualize them within a broader typology. The paper advances such a typology of hybrid formalities and informalities. For the sake of conceptual unity, these are drafted in the same theoretical framework-the structuralist perspective on informal economy. Eventually, the systematization of this typology of hybrids leads to the formulation of some general findings about the manner in which sociologists relate to formality and informality in general.

These formalities safeguard important values that contribute to the vitality of the Church in so far as they are fair, timely and adequately carried out.     Rozmowa urzędowa jako rodzaj interakcji o charakterze instytucjonalnym nie była dotąd przedmiotem pogłębionych analiz językoznawczych. Artykuł jest próbą opisu rozmowy urzędowej z zastosowaniem analizy konwersacyjnej w celu wydobycia i interpretacji elementów formalnych i nieformalnych. Udział tych elementów w kształtowaniu omawianego typu rozmowy jest warunkowany z jednej strony oficjalnym charakterem kontaktu, z drugiej zaś — jej mówioną formą. Formalność i nieformalność są tu traktowane także jako czynniki kształtowania relacji między uczestnikami rozmowy, a także narzędzia kontroli dyskursu.
    Official talk as a kind of institutional character interaction has not been a subject of detailed profound linguistic analyses so far. The article constitutes an attempt at describing an official conversation through conversation analysis which is aimed at focusing and interpretation of formal and informal elements. The presence of these elements in the official talks is conditional on the formal character of the conversation on the one hand, and on the other hand on its oral form. Formality and informality are treated as factors which shape the relation between interlocutors and as discourse control tools.

    The following analysis investigates selected properties of the language of the tweets used in the interaction with consumers on English and Polish brand profiles. The analysis examines the structure of tweets, word frequency, as well as the frequency of informal and non-standard language items, language mistakes, the use of emoticons and hashtags. The study contrasts the language used by English and Polish representatives and reveals a number of similarities and differences between the corpora. What the corpora share is a high frequency of conventional politeness acts and language structures reflecting a customer-oriented tone of the interaction. Differences are observed in the frequency and use of informal and non-standard structures, emoticons and hashtags, as well as in the structure and complexity of the tweets. The study indicates a lower formulaicity and a greater individualization of the interaction on the Polish profiles.
    Niniejsza analiza jest poświęcona cechom językowym tweetów występujących w interakcji z klientami na profilach angielskich oraz polskich firm. Analiza obejmuje badanie struktury tweetów, frekwencji słów, występowania elementów nieformalnych i niestandardowych, błędów językowych, użycia emotikonów oraz hashtagów. Badanie porównuje język stosowany przez reprezentantów firm angielskich oraz polskich i wyszczególnia szereg podobieństw oraz różnic pomiędzy analizowanymi korpusami. Cechą wspólną dla tweetów angielskich i polskich jest wysoka frekwencja aktów grzecznościowych oraz struktur odzwierciedlających nakierowanie na klienta w dyskursie. Różnice dotyczą frekwencji występowania i użycia języka nieformalnego, struktur niestandardowych, emotikonów oraz hashtagów, jak również struktury i złożoności tweetów. Badanie wskazuje na niższy poziom formuliczności i większą indywidualizację interakcji na polskich profilach.

    Text se zabývá problematikou tzv. formálnosti a neformálnosti v jazykové komunikaci v češtině; cílem je objasnit tento v lingvistice frekventovaný, avšak nikoli jednoznačný koncept. Jsou představeny jeho základní aspekty, např. souvislost s pragmatickou stránkou komunikace, jazykovými a mimojazykovými normami, resp. některými stylovými dichotomiemi. Část textu je věnována i trendu odklánění se od formálnosti (a také od spisovnosti) v situacích dříve či doposud zásadně formálních; poněkud podrobněji popisujeme tento trend v oblasti komunikace mediální.
    This article deals with the issue of so-called formality and informality in language communication in Czech; the aim is to clarify this frequent but not unambiguous concept. We comment some basic aspects of this concept, e. g. the connection with the pragmatic aspects of communication as well as with language and extra-lingual standards and other stylistic dichotomies. Part of the text follows up the current trend of deflection from formality (as well as from standard Czech) in situations previously or so far fundamentally formal; in more detail we describe this trend in media communication.
