- Despite the fact that salutary effects of forgiveness are well-established, there is a scarcity of research examining the role of different aspects of forgiveness for the quality of life in stressful situations such as illness. The current research has two major goals: 1) to compare aspects of forgiveness between cancer patients and healthy controls and 2) to examine aspects of forgiveness as potential predictors of health-related quality of life in cancer patients. 59 cancer patients and 59 healthy controls took part in the study. Forgiveness Scale and SF-36v2 were used to measure the variables of interest. The results showed that cancer patients have a lower level of self-forgiveness than controls. Furthermore, in cancer patients self-forgiveness and feeling forgiven by God proved to be significant predictors of the mental component of health-related quality of life. In the discussion section, the need for inclusion forgiveness topics into cancer care was highlighted, and some specific proposals and suggestions concerning methods to enhance self-forgiveness in cancer patients were made.
