Opis:
As organisations and economic markets continually evolve, it becomes essential to improve risk management skills on an ongoing basis. In this respect, it is particularly important to make practical use of all the tools available to identify and quantify risks. As with most entities, the most important tool for forest management is the timber selling price risk (TSPR). Economic practice shows that global markets experience very high volatility in this respect. The awareness of some popular techniques to understand the nature of individual risks by properly identifying their impact on the functioning of the organisation is currently increasing in importance. One of these techniques is the Value at Risk (VaR) method, which was used in this study to measure TSPR in 38 timber-selling economic entities. The aim of this article is to examine the concept of TSPR estimation using the VaR method adopted in the methodology by implementing the main VaR assumptions in the Polish forest economy in order to improve the methods of quantification of market risk in forestry, taking into account the impact of the sales volume and trade pattern of wood species on TSPR. The article demonstrates that the application of the VaR method can be an auxiliary tool in the TSPR management process. It is noted that this method can be a basic tool to ascertain the degree of exposure to risk and that the structure of commercial classes of timber is important. Using VaR, the relationship between the level of generated revenue and TSPR as well as between the assortment structure and TSPR was identified and discussed. It is also shown that the class of timber had an impact on TSPR.

Opis:
Modern forest management requires a well-founded knowledge and understanding of all the risks involved in forest management. It requires a wealth of information not only on natural hazards, but also related to the financial aspect of running a business. The most important activity in the risk management phase is to identify all the known risk areas, and on this basis, to determine the appropriate classification of risks accompanying the activities of the entity in question, taking into account the various categories of risk division. In forest management, the global risk of activities should be considered in terms of two main risks: operational risk (including natural and anthropogenic factors), and financial risk, which, in simple terms, is the consequence of decisions and economic processes in an entity's area of activity. Considering the impact of the production factors that affect the results of the activities carried out, it should be emphasized that forest management has a specific distribution of standard production factors. The forest stand plays the role of both a production resource and an object of production, and in the final analysis, represents a production effect. Any consideration of financial risk management in forest management should be carried out based on long-term analytical data series. Another factor for forests under state management is the various functions that forest management performs. Taking into account the ownership criterion cited earlier, it needs to be emphasized that the weighting of individual financial risks may vary depending on the ownership structure of forests in a given country and taking into account the ownership share of forests in the timber sales market. In conclusion, it was pointed out that, unlike other industries, financial risk management in forest holdings can be disrupted by the function of forests, as well as the strong influence in the long term of natural phenomena that have a significant impact on determining the types and ordering the degree of significance of individual risks in the process of identifying them.

The Global Environmental Monitoring Index (GEMI) represents a vegetation index that allows for making analysis. The index is not that sensitive to atmospheric effects. GEMI has been applied for the investigation of disruptions in the coniferous forests in Pernik Province, which is situated in the western parts of Bulgaria. The basic data comes from Landsat 8 and Corine Land Cover. The results of the study show that the index performs well in the distinguishment of broad-leaved vegetation from the coniferous one. At the same time the index doesn’t always provide satisfying results when it comes to deforestation. In conclusion GEMI provides good results, yet it’s use should be controlled and supported by other vegetation indices.

The purpose of this article is to explain the consequences of implementing one of the European Commission's successive proposals aimed at reducing emissions and increasing removals of greenhouse gases on agricultural and forest land. According to calculations based on estimates of emissions and removals adopted by the EC, the introduction of the proposed measures will result in some countries being unable to meet stringent climate targets. Pointing to the limited possibilities to increase sequestration and reduce CO₂ emissions, the author concludes that the so-called climate battle is doomed to failure. Since the actual climate impact of climate policy is negligible, the author proposes to adjust the European Commission's ambitious targets for individual countries by applying a special coefficient. This would reduce the negative effects that climate policy brings to the economy, food security and social security.

The purpose of the research is to study the current state, features of growth and formation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands in Eastern Polissia of Ukraine. The structure of pine stands by origin, age, the density of stocking, site indices, forest types and health condition was analysed. Features of the formation of stands were studied at the permanent sample plots. Visual assessment of health condition, as well as signs of pest and disease damage of trees, other defects and external signs that caused stem defects was carried out. The age structure of pine stands was not optimal: there was an excess of mature stands and a lack of young stands. The health condition of mixed pine stands was relatively better than that of pure pine stands. Mixed pine stands were characterised by high biological resistance and accumulated significant wood stock under regular sylvicultural maintenance. The dynamics of forestry and evaluation indicators of reference pine stands were evaluated and comparison of their growth with stocked pine stands was performed.

Background: Brush cutters are widely used in Chinese landscape gardening and agricultural laboring which leads the operators being exposed to many risks. Low back pain (LBP) is particularly common and can lead to substantial personal, community and financial burdens. The aim of the presented study was to measure the activity and function of each torso muscle of the operator when using the bush cutter, so as to evaluate the muscle injury of the operator during using several common brush cutters for different landscape tasks. Material and Methods: The human postures of 6 workers using 2 types of brush cutters in the 3 working conditions were recorded and measured by using a surface electromyography (sEMG) system and a camera. The test results were compared by t-test and sign test. The effect of human posture on the sEMG signal of trunk muscles in different working condition were analyzed by ANOVA. Results: In the 3 working conditions, except for the left trapezius muscle, the muscle load of operating the backpack brush cutter is higher than that of operating side-mounted brush cutter. When operating the side-mounted backpack brush cutter, the force on both sides of the trapezius muscle is uneven, the load of the left trapezius muscle is >25%, and the maximum value is >30%. Conclusions: The results highlighted significant differences in the effects of different working postures on the muscle activities of workers’ trunk. Safe operation standards should therefore be taken to protect the exposed workers and to improve the industrial design of irrigation cutters to prevent the occurrence of occupational diseases.

ObjectivesThis study examined the physiological strain experienced by workers employed in motor-manual timber harvesting performed in winter and summer, and the applicability of heart rate indices for estimating energy expenditure.Material and MethodsThe heart rates (HR) of 2 teams consisting of 2 persons working simultaneously during felling and forwarding, in both winter and summer, were measured. Heart rate at work (HRwork), resting heart rate (HRrest), relative heart rate (%HRR), ratio of working heart rate to resting heart rate, and 50% level were used to estimate the physiological workload in particular jobs. The HRindex (HRwork/HRrest) equation was used to estimate the energy expenditure (EE). ResultsFor all jobs, significantly higher physiological workload and energy expenditure were recorded during winter.ConclusionsThe season significantly affects the physiological workload during logging operations. If there is no possibility of harvesting wood in summer, in order to limit the workload of workers during winter activity, attention should be paid to the proper organization of work and selection of workers.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest pedagogiczny potencjał lasu, konieczny do wydobycia przez osoby zawodowo zajmujące się nauczaniem i wychowaniem, i równie konieczny do włączenia w praktykę zawodową leśników i edukatorów leśnych. Wszyscy wkraczamy w czas kryzysu klimatycznego z jego trudnymi do przewidzenia konsekwencjami, z bagażem nierozwiązanych spraw i poszerzonym nagle polem niewiedzy.
The subject of the article is the pedagogical potential of the forest, necessary for people professionally involved in teaching and upbringing and equally necessary to include foresters and forest educators in their professional practice. We are all entering the time of the climate crisis with its unpredictable consequences, the baggage of unresolved issues and the suddenly widened field of ignorance. Creating new knowledge, new competences and searching for a new educational paradigm for pedagogy and forestry seems to be urgently needed. It is about shaping the obligations towards the forest as soon as possible in the current generations, and not – as it has been the case so far – the obligations of the forest towards people. This requires seeing and understanding the fourth – the spiritual dimension of the forest, beyond the Euclidean quantitative dimensions. Shifting the emphasis from the position of “holding power” over nature, to the less lucrative position of a co-host, from knowing everything and better, to seeking relational knowledge, from breaking the laws of nature to respecting these laws, requires an interdisciplinary pedagogical effort of children, adolescents and adults.

Opis:
The focus of this review paper is to present the state of the art regarding RFID implementations in wood supply chains, covering the tree marking stage till the transportation to the final processor. The easier than ever collection of data using sensors and the emerging ability to exchange information in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) form a very promising new environment for the optimization of wood supply chains. Driven by currently enhanced, ability to store different layers of information per merchantable unit (tree assortments at final or semi-final form or containers of woody biomass), RFID applications can provide valuable solutions and revolutionize wood supply chains by warranting traceability, combating illegal logging, minimizing waste and offering detailed information of the wood products properties, among other benefits that are presented in the text. The benefits can be identified at the ecological, social and economic levels, addressing the sustainability concerns of modern societies. To make use of this huge potential, a continuous flow and fusion of information at all supply chain stages must be taken for granted, as well as the close cooperation among stakeholders.

Opis:
This study is an overview of the published data. It aims to compile the information collected on the legal status and threats to the mosses and liverworts occurring in forest ecosystems in Poland. The species associated with ancient forests with a high degree of naturalness consist of a group of particular interest and care among these plants. Among thirty-six species recognized in Poland as relics of primeval forests, eighteen are considered endangered, but only four are on the European red list. One of the main threats to this group of epiphytic and epixylic species is forest management, which causes a decrease in the availability of microhabitats and deterioration of the microclimate inside the forest areas. Drainage of forest wetlands, as well as non-forest ones, carried out commonly in the past centuries, also had severe effects. On the other hand, there are no significant threats to epigeic mosses occurring in mineral habitats of coniferous and mixed forests. Therefore, the suitable protection of epiphytic and epixylic mosses and liverworts should rely on protecting their habitats. The best solution is to protect appropriate areas in a conservative form. The spatial units excluded from the use of the tree stands should maintain a microclimate specific to the forest interior. It is possible only with their appropriate size, i.e., a width exceeding twice the height of the stand, and an area of at least 1 ha, if possible. The threshold value should be at least one such area per 100 ha of managed forests in naturevaluable areas.

The paper attempts to describe the possibilities of shaping the environment and spatial development of the rural administrative areas of Białowieża, using the tools of planning documents. The natural and cultural space of Białowieża rural administrative district is particularly sensitive to any investment activities. It is impossible to overestimate its value, and the need to take care of it is a natural necessity, determining all activities, especially planning and architectural-urban planning ones, responsible for its future shape. The aim of the study is to indicate ways of searching for such possibilities so that the two – natural and cultural – structures harmoniously interpenetrate each other. Subsequent steps and activities are described in detail, starting with a very precise identification of the resources of the space under analysis, followed by the execution of an architectural and urban planning inventory, conducting a nature and landscape study up to the development of a list of parameters and indicators, and ending with the development of a three-dimensional model of the settlement units of the rural district, based on the provisions of the draft local spatial development plan.

In the central part of the Bolshoy Solovetsky Island, in the same type of growing conditions, two plots were created in 1988: the first consisted of twisted pine (Pinus contorta Loud. var. latifolia S. Wats) crops and the second one was of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The aim of the study was to establish the morphological parameters of the twisted pine and its growth in the conditions of the Bolshoy Solovetsky Island in comparison with the native species P. sylvestris L. Also, we aimed to identify the features of P. contorta var. latifolia and determine the possibility and necessity of further introduction of the species. The preservation of the twisted pine and scots pine cultures was determined. Accounting trees were selected (62 and 31 trees, respectively), in which morphometric indicators were measured. Wood samples (cores) were taken from them with an age drill to measure radial growth. The radial increment was measured using the MBS-9 microscope and the Lintab device. To measure the increase in height, six medium-sized model trees were cut down. According to the taxation indicators, the two types differed slightly and the differences were most often unreliable. The average height of the twisted pine trees was significantly higher compared to that of Scots pine. The thickness of the bark varied; on average, at the age of 18, it was 1.35 ± 0.038 mm for twisted pine and 1.86 ± 0.095 for Scots pine, that is, the native pine bark was 38% thicker. Typical for twisted pine were a significant number of pathologies noted in 22% of the studied trees. Twisted pine was distinguished by a stronger development of the assimilation apparatus: the number of branches of the first order, the number of branches in the whorl, the life span of needles. An increase in radius (the width of the annual ring) was observed at 14–15 years, and then with age, the value decreased in twisted pine and remained at a consistently high level in Scots pine. The width of the late zone of the annual ring was 12% in Scots pine and 14% in twisted pine; but at a young age, the late wood in twisted pine was very small. The increase in height of the twisted pine was on average less than that of Scots pine. The dependence of the trunk volume on the diameter was almost identical in both species.
