Opis:
Forest vegetation is a key factor in the maintenance of global carbon cycle balance under the present climate change conditions. Forest ecosystems are both buffers against extreme climatic events accompanying climate change and carbon sinks diminishing the environmental impact of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. We investigated the influence of stand structure and site characteristics on the productivity and carbon storage capacity of temperate forest types. Predictors of species productivity were parameters such as stand density, age, height, average diameter and wood density. Morus alba (L.) was more productive than average both in terms of annual volume increment and annual biomass gain, while Quercus sessiliflora (Matt.) Lieb. and Quercus frainetto (Ten.) were significantly less productive than average. Differences in stand productivity were explained by stand density, age, height, altitude, type of regeneration and species composition. Statistically significant differences were measured between the productivity of stands dominated by different woody species, with low productive stands dominated by slow growing species with high wood density like Quercus or Fagus, and highly productive stands rich in fast growing species with low wood density like Populus or Salix. Stands with different plant communities in the underlying herbaceous layer also tended to have different levels of productivity.

Opis:
Knowledge of the vegetation and the monitoring of its changes in preserved areas is an essential part of effective conservation policy and management. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of traditional methods of conservation of silver fir forests. The study analyses the changes in the structure and species composition of a temperate forest excluded from the commercial silvicultural management for 50 years, and since then protected as a nature reserve. The study is based on a comparative analysis of phytosociological reléves made on permanent plots in 1961, 1982, 1994 and 2011. PCA and ecological indicator values were analyzed, as well as characteristic species based on an indicator value (IndVal) index. Results revealed significant and dynamic changes in the forest structure and composition. The mixed coniferous-broadleaved forest with Abies alba and diverse ground flora, considered in the 1960s as valuable and worthy of conservation, was found to have been anthropogenically transformed and unstable. Significant reduction in the human impact was followed by spontaneous regeneration of oak–hornbeam forest. However, the directional process of changes in vegetation was modified by such silvicultural treatments as selective cutting of trees and gap creation, all intended for silver fir maintenance. The results show that Carpinus betulus effectively outcompeted Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies, Quercus robur and A. alba. Changes in the forest overstory and understory caused temporal changes in the habitat conditions reflected in changes in the ground vegetation composition. The proportion of light-demanding and oligotrophic species significantly decreased, while the contribution of species with a wide ecological amplitude, i.e. more shade-tolerant and nutrient-demanding – increased. The share of A. alba was reduced. Species defined in this study as most valuable, should be actively protected, or selection of conservation targets should be re-evaluated.

Thinning of young forests attracts the attention of scientists despite the long-term commercial effect. However, these researches are scarce. Therefore, it is important to study experiments with a long history. The aim of our study is to investigate the impact of thinning carried out in young pine/birch boreal forests on stand formation, natural regeneration, ground cover and properties of the soil layers in stands. We investigated three types of thinning in young pine/birch forests. In one plot of the initial stand, thinning was performed in two stages with a time interval of 27 years; in the first stage, thinning intensity was 75% of stems, while in the second stage, thinning intensity was 30%. In two other plots, thinning was performed in one stage at a stand age of 13 years, with thinning intensities of 76 and 84%. At the stand age of 72 years (2017), integrated studies of the silvicultural and ecological states were carried out. All thinned plots had developed into pure pine stands with 28–53% thicker stems, 12–18% higher trees and a growing stock 55–92% higher compared to the un-thinned reference stand. The most pronounced differences were observed for Option 1. With thinning, forest type changed to red whortleberry type, while the un-thinned reference site developed into a blueberry type forest. Thinning in young pine/birch stands results in the formation of pure pine stands. The associated modification of environmental properties changed the composition and density of the ground cover and some properties of the upper soil layers. Two-stage thinning had the least impacts; this approach can be used to produce stands with high commercial value. It is especially recommended for young pine/birch forests in the northern taiga.

In this study, we examine the pattern of occurrence of Impatiens parviflora in Central European oak forests over time and its ecological requirements within these types of communities. Research was based on phytosociological data collected in 3776 relevés. A modified TWINSPAN algorithm were used to distinguish the groups of oak forests. The ecological preferences of the I. parviflora and studied communities as well as differences between invaded and non-invaded vegetation plots were analyzed using mean weighted Ellenberg indicator values (EIVs). Finally, both the temporal pattern of I. parviflora participation and changes in its coverage in the studied communities were analyzed. Our study confirmed a high adaptability of this species with respect to temperature, moisture, soil reaction and nutrients and determined its broad ecological optimum in oak forests. However, it also revealed both a greater sensitivity of some communities within Central European oak forests to the invasion of I. parviflora and differences in habitat conditions between invaded and non-invaded vegetation plots. This suggests that the habitat niche of I. parviflora within oak forests is not accidental. The analysis of temporal changes in the frequency of I. parviflora confirmed a 20% increase in relevés over the last 50 years. However, we did not identify any statistically significant rise in the coverage of I. parviflora in oak forests specifically during the studied period.

The paper presents comparative characteristics of the length as well as start and end dates of the forest vegetation period (FVP) in the years 1981−2010 determined on the basis of the average daily air temperature and data generated for the conditions of two−fold higher CO2 concentration. To simulate meteorological data for that conditions, we applied the WGENK data generator, considering assumptions of GISS Model E scenario of climate change. The results showed that the average start date of FVP in Poland in the period of 1981−2010 was April 25th, while the average end date of FVP was October 10th. The average length of FVP for Poland equalled 165 days. It was discovered that, on average, the FVP start accelerated by 8 days per 30 years and the FVP end was slightly delayed by 3 days per 30 years. During the analyzed period, the FVP in Poland extended by 10 days on average. According to the applied scenario of the climate change, the trend indicates a possible increase in the FVP by 30 days when compared to the present state. The FVP may start 2−3 weeks earlier and finish 1−2 weeks later than presently. The generated data pointed at April 9th as the average date of the FVP start and October 24th as the date of its end.

Vegetation of deciduous forests in the Štiavnické vrchy Mts (Central Slovakia) was studied using the standard Zürich-Montpellier approach. The numerical classification and ordination technique were applied to determine the main forest vegetation types and to find the responsible environmental drivers related to their distribution patterns, respectively. The data set including 198 relevés collected by authors in 1997-2009 and 185 relevés excerpted from literature was used to analysis. Numerical classification resulted in delimitation of fourteen vegetation types representing eleven associations with two variants and two communities within the Quercetea roboripetraeae and Querco-Fagetea classes. The major environmental gradients in variation of forest species composition were associated with moisture and nutrient content following the average Ellenberg indicator values. Along the moisture gradient, vegetation types were ordered from subxerophilous oak forests turn mesophilous mixed oak-hornbeam, beech and ravine forests to hygrophilous riparian alder forest. The results confirmed important role of soil nutrients and moisture by determination of forest vegetation in subcontinental part of Central Europe. Special attention was given to the discussion of floristical characteristics, site conditions and syntaxonomy.

Vegetation of forest roads and tourist trails on which specific carpet vegetation grow is an example of extreme changes taking place under the impact of anthropopressure. Analysis of changes in the plants growing close to forest roads and paths may contribute to the identification of the main trends in the process of transformation of vegetable cover subject to trampling. It also may be the basis for determination of the degree of resistance of forest communities to tourist pressure and the possibilities and time of their regeneration after it has ceased. Regeneration capability of the vegetation destroyed by trampling after the disturbances have ceased is one of the indicators of its resistance to pressure.

Permanently balanced forest economy demands today a resignation from a constant model of the forest stand, which preferred the productive function of the forest, mostly without any consideration to its natural values formed by Mother Nature. Implanting on Polish grounds principles of multifunctional forest districts acknowledged as a breeding object of the whole forest ecosystem, giving in that way the forest economy a proecological dimension. Its a result from a general progress of civilization and achievements in forest science; reaching towards the needs and expectations from the society gaining a general acceptation from different environments. One of the fundamental elements implementing the ecosystem is to rebuild deformed and artificially barred forest phytocenosis. This refers especially to pure pine stands on habitats, in which trophoism potential explains breeding habitats species variety. A good help for the forester in this area can be a natural succesion of good, noble broad−leaved species like for example the oak. Succesion of this species takes on a special meaning in poor habitats, in which it without any special imposes enriches the biocenose with the whole positive outcome accompanying this process; it can also be a valuable clue to the potential fertility in the habitat and the complexity in the forest vegetation community. An important task is to lead the way for the oaks development from succesion to its fullest use as a natural presence in creating the future forest generation. The article below is devoted to this question describing the natural up growth of the oak in pine stands on the coniferous forest habitats in Forest District Różanna and the methods and results in which they are used for breeding.

Vegetation mapping is an active research area in the domain of remote sensing. This study proposes a methodology for the mapping of vegetation by integrating several vegetation indices along with original spectral bands. The Land Use Land Cover classification was performed by two powerful Machine Learning techniques, namely Random Forest and AdaBoost. The Random Forest algorithm works on the concept of building multiple decision trees for the final prediction. The other Machine Learning technique selected for the classification is AdaBoost (adaptive boosting), converts a set of weak learners into strong learners. Here, multispectral satellite data of Dehradun, India, was utilised. The results demonstrate an increase of 3.87% and 4.32% after inclusion of selected vegetation indices by Random Forest and AdaBoost respectively. An Overall Accuracy (OA) of 91.23% (kappa value of 0.89) and 88.59% (kappa value of 0.86) was obtained by means of the Random Forest and AdaBoost classifiers respectively. Although Random Forest achieved greater OA as compared to AdaBoost, interestingly AdaBoost provided better class-specific accuracy for the Shrubland class compared to Random Forest. Furthermore, this study also evaluated the importance of each individual feature used in the classification. Results demonstrated that the NDRE, GNDVI, and RTVIcore vegetation indices, and spectral bands (NIR, and Red-Edge), obtained higher importance scores.

The objective of this study was to estimate the edge effect on the species richness in agriculturally maintained forest-grassland boundaries of coniferous forest and to determine how species respond to a forest edge. We hypothesised that species number, cover of herbs and mosses is higher in the edge, and species penetrates from nearby grasslands into forest interior. The study was conducted in the Southwestern Lithuania. The edge effect on overall herbaceous species composition of coniferous forests was evaluated by Canonical Correspondence Analysis. The species richness of herbs and mosses in the coniferous forest was highest in the forest edge and declined towards interior. The highest decrease in the number of species occurred within 0 to 5 m to the edge. The highest cover of herbs and mosses was in the forest edge and decreased towards the forest interior. CCA biplot showed a good correlation of overall species composition and the distance to the forest edge. Distribution of species along edge to interior gradient depended on the species response to different ecological factors. Ellenberg value of light was higher in the edge. Ellenberg value of nitrogen was higher in the forest interior.

This paper presents the results of an inventory of plant communities of the urban forests in Warsaw. It covers the occurrence of forest associations and forest plant communities in individual forest complexes. Due to their location within the boundaries of a large urban agglomeration, Warsaw’s city forests are particularly exposed to anthropopressure. The share of various degrees of degeneration and dominant forms of degeneration in individual complexes and over the whole surface under investigation was assessed. Possible causes of the conditions existing in the forests have been discussed; in particular, within the context of the development and use of these forests for tourism and recreation. Particular forests’ distinct historical origins, forestry management, and existing forms of surface protection possess fundamental significance for the determination of their current state.

Considering plant-to-soil pathways, decomposition of vegetative fluxes such as litter and litterfall is one of the important processes that adjust the carbon cycle and nutritional elements in the formation of a forest's organogenic horizon. However, there is little information available on this subject, and the fractional structure (amount, type and interrelation) of organic matter also seems to receive little attention. Using 7 different vegetative samples, a field study was performed over 3 years to find the relation between phenolics content and mass losses in the subarctic region (N66° and E31°). In addition, climate effects on this relation were investigated. The data obtained from this field study testify that (i) an intensive loss of organic matter occurred in active parts of various litterfalls and (ii) leached phenols were related with mass losses (decomposition rates) of vegetative fluxes (litterfalls and litters) to the soil. The statistic analysis suggests that (iii) total mass losses of samples (except litter) were connected with both the temperature sum and the precipitation sum, and (iv) phenolics losses also had a similar trend in different kinds of litterfall.

Opis:
The accurate mapping of forest species is a very important task in relation to the increasing need to better understand the role of the forest ecosystem within environmental dynamics. The objective of this paper is the investigation of the potential of a multi-temporal hyperspectral dataset for the production of a thematic map of the dominant species in the Forêt de Hardt (France). Hyperspectral data were collected in June and September 2013 using the Airborne Prism EXperiment (APEX) sensor, covering the visible, near-infrared and shortwave infrared spectral regions with a spatial resolution of 3 m by 3 m. The map was realized by means of a maximum likelihood supervised classification. The classification was first performed separately on images from June and September and then on the two images together. Class discrimination was performed using as input 3 spectral indices computed as ratios between red edge bands and a blue band for each image. The map was validated using a testing set selected on the basis of a random stratified sampling scheme. Results showed that the algorithm performances improved from an overall accuracy of 59.5% and 48% (for the June and September images, respectively) to an overall accuracy of 74.4%, with the producer’s accuracy ranging from 60% to 86% and user’s accuracy ranging from 61% to 90%, when both images (June and September) were combined. This study demonstrates that the use of multi-temporal high-resolution images acquired in two different vegetation development stages (i.e., 17 June 2013 and 4 September 2013) allows accurate (overall accuracy 74.4%) local-scale thematic products to be obtained in an operational way.

Opis:
Vietnam is an Asian country with hot and humid tropical climate throughout the year. Forests account for more than 40% of the total land area and have a very rich and diverse vegetation. Monitoring the changes in the vegetation cover is obviously important yet challenging, considering such large varying areas and climatic conditions. A traditional remote sensing technique to monitor the vegetation cover involves the use of optical satellite images. However, in presence of the cloud cover, the analyses done using optical satellite image are not reliable. In such a scenario, radar images are a useful alternative due to the ability of radar pulses in penetrating through the clouds, regardless of day or night. In this study, we have used multi temporal C band satellite images to monitor vegetation cover changes for an area in Dau Tieng and Ben Cat districts of Binh Duong province, Mekong Delta, Vietnam. With a collection of 46 images between March 2015 and February 2017, the changes of five land cover types including vegetation loss and replanting in 2017 were analyzed by selecting two cases, using 9 images in the dry season of 3 years 2015, 2016 and 2017 and using all of 46 images to conduct Random Forest classifier with 100, 200, 300 and 500 trees respectively. The result in which the model with nine images and 300 trees gave the best accuracy with an overall accuracy of 98.4% and a Kappa of 0.97. The results demonstrated that using VH polarization, Sentinel-1 gives quite a good accuracy for vegetation cover change. Therefore, Sentinel-1 can also be used to generate reliable land cover maps suitable for different applications.

Opis:
The phytosociology of the forests in the Herby Forest District has not been thoroughly examined so far with the exception of a few studies that concentrated on small parts of afforested areas. One of the main aims of this study was to comprehensively characterize all forest communities in the Herby Forest District. Our methods for data collection were based on the Central European phytosociological approach of the Braun-Blanquet school. Data from over 300 relevés were gathered in the field and then classified using numerical methods resulting in 17 vegetation units, including 11 forest communities and lower syntaxons. Querco roboris-Pinetum and Leucobryo-Pinetum were the dominating forest communities in the Herby Forest District. This result is generally in accordance with previous findings from the forest vegetation analyses conducted by other authors in this area. However, the presence of some forest communities described in previously published studies was not confirmed; instead several new communities were identified. These new communities are mostly the result of forest management. Furthermore, based on our results we were able to derive new information about the distribution, differentiation, developmental stage and degree of preservation of some forest communities.

Fire usually causes changes in the composition and diversity of herbaceous species. The present paper aimed to study the effect of repeated fire incidents on understory species diversity in the Saravan forests of Guilan Province located in the north of Iran. To do so, three 50-hectare areas with identical physiographical conditions and overstory (hand-planted softwood Pinus taeda) were selected. Seven fire incidences occurred for the 10-year period in one of the areas and the other area experienced three fire incidents within the same period. The area with no fire incidents was considered as the control area. All the fire incidents were surface ones. The systematic random method with a sample size 100 × 200 m was used for collecting data. Based on the above, 25 samples were determined in each area. The whole coverage of the understory was taken into consideration using Whittaker’s method and the Domain criterion so as to calculate species diversity indices. The results showed that Shannon-Wiener diversity and Menhinick’s richness in the regions which experienced 3 and 7 fire incidents were maximum and minimum, respectively, whereas no significant difference was seen between the regions with regard to Smith and Wilson’s evenness index.

Presented work is aimed at investigating potential correlations between remote sensing vegetation indices and local ant populations. Research was conducted in summer of 2017 in Wigry National Park in two types of forest habitats: coniferous (Serratulo-Pinetum) and deciduous (Tilio-Carpinetum). NDVI and MCARI2 vegetation indices were measured with the use of a drone and yielded comparable correlations with ant-related quantities. We determined that the presence of ants from Formica group is positively correlated with vegetation indices, while the correlation between Myrmica and Lasius ants and vegetation indices is more complex.

Nowadays, forest perception is multi-layered and often very subjective. Forest can have three basic functions: economic, social and protective. These functions are of varying importance for local communities. The paper analyses the significance of particular forest functions for the inhabitants of Czarna Białostocka commune. Factors that motivate respondents to visit the forest were analyzed. The evaluation assessed, among other things, the purpose and frequency of visits to forests, the type of resources extracted from forests and for what purposes they are used. The research tool was a questionnaire consisting of 11 questions. The research was conducted in autumn 2016 among 100 inhabitants of towns and villages adjacent to the forest areas of Czarna Białostocka commune. According to the conducted interviews, for the residents of Czarna Białostocka commune, the forest is used primarily for harvesting ground vegetation such as mushrooms, fruits and herbs. To a lesser degree, it is a place of rest and recreation.

The secondary succession pattern observed on an arable field abandoned since 1974 in Tilio-Carpinetum habitat is described and disscussed. Results obtained during 36 years of study confirm that succession on an abandoned field leads from a typical segetal community to the formation of a juvenile treestand composed of pioneer species. Our study supports the view that succession is a process which is largely dependent on the initial conditions and surrounding vegetation. The results indicate that some species can modify the course of this process, accelerating or slowing it down. Limitations of the method and prognosis of future vegetation development are also discussed.

Opis:
The paper aimed at comparison of remotely sensed data for forest areas in Poland. The main objective was to study how time−series of satellite data derived from NOAA AVHRR and SPOT VEGETATION (SPOT VGT) are compatible and can be useful for forest cover monitoring. NOAA AVHRR fifteen−year observations collected by the receiving station mounted at the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography were processed with radiometric, geometric and atmospheric corrections to obtain Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images. Next, daily NDVI images were clustered into ten−day composites and smoothed with Savitzky−Golay filter. The long−term NDVI data derived from SPOT VGT were post−processed in order to prepare reference set to cross−comparison analysis. The study area encompasses forest complexes representative for various climatic conditions: Borecka, Augustów, Knyszyn and Białowieża Forests as well as forests of the Karkonosze and Beskid Żywiecki mountains. The satellite data were analyzed within vegetation period (April−September). The comparison of frequency of cloud−free observations and mean NDVI values over study sites was performed to follow the deviations in two datasets. The Wilcoxon signed−rank test proved that there are statistically significant NDVI differences between NOAA and SPOT data for Augustów, Knyszyn, Białowieża and Karkonosze Forests. On the other hand, NDVI observations for Borecka Forest and Beskid Żywiecki Mts. revealed quite high compatibility. The Spearman rank correlation results proved that NDVI time−series derived from NOAA AVHRR and SPOT VGT are incoherent and depended on test site or year of the observation. The cross−comparison analysis revealed that there is a need for additional investigation into achieving full compatibility of satellite datasets for successful forest cover monitoring.

Opis:
SOZO database and its cartographic model – a sozological map is a thematic data source that represents the state of natural environment, as well as the causes and effects of both positive and negative transformations occurring in the environment. There is no doubt that the SOZO database should be a tool to investigate and evaluate the state of natural environment in a quantitative manner. However, the analysis of chosen features in the database reveals that they seem to be insufficient for conducting spatial analysis. The crucial problem is related to classes of forest damage represented by point features in a database without the extent of forest degradation. This type of presentation has limited use for geospatial analysis of environment therefore the Authors propose to use remotely sensed data to enhance SOZO database with updated data together with the spatial occurrence of the studied phenomenon. This research presents the potentials of determining class of forest damage based on the vegetation indices (NDVI and NDII) that successfully replaces the point-feature class of forest damage with polygon-based classes, thereby introducing the new quality of the data into the environmental database and make SOZO database a useful product in spatial analysis.
Dotyczy to m.in. warstwy klasy degradacji lasów reprezentowanej w postaci geometrii punktowej bez określenia zasięgu tych klas. W pracy zaproponowano zastosowanie zobrazowań satelitarnych jako źródło aktualnych danych dodatkowo zasilających bazę w zasięg występowania badanego zjawiska. Klasy degradacji lasu określono na podstawie wskaźników wegetacyjnych (NDVI i NDII), któ- rych kombinacja pozwala wyznaczyć stopień i zasięg degradacji lasów w postaci obiektów powierzchniowych.

Opis:
Scots pine stands are the most important forest type in Poland and the differentiation of the natural vegetation in these forests is well known. However, the intensive utilization causes the formation of the secondary communities, so that further studies of the vegetation diversity should be carried out with taking into consideration stand age and homogeneity of site conditions. The aim of this work is to assess the diversification of plant communities across the gradient of tree stand age. Scots pine stands on oligotrophic sites of the Przymuszewo Forest District were examined with dividing into six age classes ( 10, 11−20, 21−40, 41−60, 61−80, 81−120 years old). Numerical analysis allowed to differ 4 plant communities: non−forest community of Placynthiella−Cladonia sp. div. related to young stands before crown closure ( 10 years old), secondary forest community of Pinus sylvestris−Cladonia subulata related to young stands just after crown closure (11−20 years), forest communities of Leucobryo−Pinetum variant with Cladonia and typical variant – both related to stands older than 20 years. The identified communities differ in terms of species richness and vertical structure, but they are repetitive combinations of species which can be classified within hierarchical syntaxonomical system. They show common features with the communities of south−western Poland, but differ from plant communities of managed Scots pine forest in the continental part.

The soils studied are situated in the northern part of Gardno-Łebsko Lowland, which is part of the Słupsk Plain. For laboratory research two parcels were chosen, with the area of 0.5 ha, situated in protected district of Smołdzinski Las. The research of the selected parcels shows great differences in the construction of soil and flora profiles. What they have in common is the high level of groundwater, which is influenced by slight changes during the vegetation season. The investigated soils have the acid reaction in all parts of their profile. The lowest values observed in levels of moulder differed from 3.56 to 3.74 pHH20.

Opis:
The paper aims at assessing the impact of meteorological conditions on the start of the growing season (SOS) over forests in north−eastern Poland. The main objective was to study which, and if so to what extent, the meteorological parameters can describe the changes of the onset of vegetation in broadleaved forests. Study area encompasses forest complexes located in north−eastern Poland, which are under the influence of maritime and continental climate characterized by a shorter vegetation period and large temperature fluctuations. In this study forest mask containing only pixels with 50% cover of broadleaved forests defined by CLC2012 was applied. The time−series of satellite images derived from VEGETATION mission were applied for determining the start of the growing season. 10−day composites of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from 1999 to 2016, derived at 1 km pixel resolution were filtered with double logistic function in order to determine the SOS. The meteorological parameters such as maximum air temperature, total precipitation and surface solar radiation derived from field measurements one month before the start of the growing season were taken into account. The Pearson correlation results proved that only maximum air temperature was related to the onset of the growing season. The strength of the relations depended on the dominant trees recognized within the forest area. There were no statistically significant relations with the precipitation and solar surface radiation which could be explained by frequent clouds during the month before the SOS and not observed unfavorable conditions that could have impacted on the changes of the growing season in forests.

Opis:
Recently, the assessment of the degree and direction of changes in Carpathian forests has become a highly important subject. This study presents a floristic comparison between fertile Carpathian beech forest with perennial honesty surveyed in 1972−1973 and 2005−2008. The aim of the work is to determine the changes occurring in managed forests, based on the herb vegetation species. Changes were tested on community, semi−permanent sampling plot and species levels. The changes suggest a drop in humidity and fertility of the soil and an increase in light exposure. Also, an increase in biodiversity and species richness was observed. On the other hand, statistical analysis of the ecological groups of species indicated an ongoing process of reconstruction of the species structure, leading to a diminishment of the biological distinctiveness of the studied phytocenoses, and consequently to beech forest homogenization.

Opis:
The response of an ash-alder swamp forest to water damming was studied in the Łutownia stream running in Białowieża Forest. The Łutownia stream with artificial dam existing from 2001 for small water retention purposes was the test object. The first observation of vegetation was done in 2004, when small retention construction started to influence surrounding forest, but beavers had not built their dam yet. After one year of experiments (2005) the beaver dam was constructed close to man-made dam and its influence was most significant for further studies. So, the first observation refers to the status of ash-alder swamp forest before beaver damming. Water table level was measured from the beginning of 2004. The main goal of presented studies was to determine changes of terrestrial vegetation and its habitat after increasing of the water level in the stream. One square metre plots in a frame 5 x 5m were localized in a transect close to the stream upstream and downstream artificial dam. Within 104 such plots ground vegetation (growing up to 0.5 m above ground) was described using Braun-Blanquet scale of abundance. The vegetation studies were conducted twice in 2004 and repeated in 2007. The list of species and their abundance were determined twice: in spring and in summer. Changes of species richness and coverage by species characteristic for floodplain and swamp forest site were evaluated. Ecological indices of soil moisture and fertility determined as the means weighed by percent cover by plant species were calculated for two periods of observation. Calculated indicator values showed that water retention increased the number of swamp forest species by 8 times, but the area of swamp habitat increased 16 times compared with 2004. The mean number of species per sample plot was the same before and after water damming by beavers. The plant association (ash-alder riparian forest) changed its floristic composition to swampier variant. Obtained results showed real impact of beavers’ activity on ground vegetation and its habitat in ash-alder swamp forest. Observed increased number of swamp species close to the beaver dam is positive from ecological point of view. Presented results indicate also, that species richness is strongly controlled by beaver damming. The population dynamics of beavers could also potentially affect species richness by altering the age distribution of beaver dams and abandoned ponds across the river valley landscape. Generally, this point of view could have adverse social effects because beavers'activity brings losses to forestry and agriculture. Therefore, we should try to find a balance between economy and wildlife management. Monitoring of the beaver sites should be continued to evaluate ecological consequences and to find best solution of these problems.
Spis gatunków runa i ilościowość określano w 2004 i 2007 r. w okresie wiosny i lata. W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono wyniki z pomiaru poziomu wód gruntowych w jednej studzience (nr 5), w okresach od czerwca do grudnia w latach 2004, 2005 i 2007.

Opis:
The ‘Mierzwice’ nature reserve (forest district 206b, c and d of the Sarnaki Forest Inspectorate), situated in the area of the Podlaski Przełom Bug Landscape Park, is one of the most valuable natural assets of the central Bug river valley. The 12.98 ha reserve was established in 2010 to aid protection of the stand of xerothermic vegetation and its surrounding deciduous forest. In total, eight plant associations were identified within the reserve: Geranio-Peucedanetum cervariae, Geranio-Anemonetum sylvestris, Geranio-Trifolietum alpestris, Trifolio medii-Agrimonietum, Rubo fruticosi- Prunetum, Rhamno-Cornetum sanguinei, Potentillo albae-Quercetum and Tilio cordatae-Carpinetum betuli. Furthermore, 23 protected and 31 endangered species were found in the reserve including the following examples: Cephalanthera rubra, Thesium ebracteatum, Cypripedium calceolus, Gentiana cruciata, Anemone sylvestris, Cimicifuga europaea, Viola rupestris, Crepis praemorsa, Asperula tinctoria, Stachys recta, Laserpitium latifolium. Over the last few years, a regression of the species diagnostic number for thermophilous oak forests and xerothermic grasslands has been observed as a result of succession and expansion of Calamagrostis epigejos. Active protection of xerothermic vegetation such as uprooting of trees and bushes, regular grazing or mowing has been suggested in order to prevent the expansion of Calamagrostis epigejos.

The paper presents a study on the determination of soil moisture using the so-called triangle method which is based on analysis of the scatter plots of LST (Land Surface Temperature) and VI (Vegetation Index). On the basis of LST-VI scatter plot the called temperature-vegetation drought index, TVDI (Temperature-Vegetation Dryness Index), can be determined, which is a good measure of the soil moisture available to plants. However, determination of such an index can be carried out in several manners and using different vegetation indices. The aim of the work was to present and compare three types of method for determining the TVDI index using two different vegetation indices, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vagetation Index) and EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index), with particular emphasis on determining the so-called "dry edge”. The TVDI drought index was determined for the Kampinos National Park area. The authors obtained interesting results, consistent with the literature. In this paper the authors present in detail, and compare with each other, three methods of determining the TVDI index using two vegetation indices - NDVI and EVI, with particular emphasis on determining so-called "dry edge". In addition, a detailed statistical analysis of the results obtained by using three modifications of the triangle method was performed. It is worth to mention that soil moisture, and thus the measuring methods, are important from both the scientific and the practical point of view (e.g. risk of fire, agriculture).

Opis:
The paper presents a method of Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper satellite image processing to assess the condition of forests in the Tatra National Park (southern Poland). Selected images were acquired on 1987/09/01, 2005/09/02 and 2011/09/03 from the same sensor with maximum time interval for the first and last scene and from similar phenological period. Firstly, the data were radiometrically corrected using the ATCOR 2/3 software and Digital Terrain Model from the ASTER mission. Quality of the correction was assessed calculating RMSE for reflectance values from images and resampled spectral characteristics collected in terrain. RMSE was in range 3−10%. Next, basing on Landsat images, Normalized Difference Infrared Index (NDII) and a Maximum Likelihood supervised classificatory, following dominant land cover types were identified: forests (including dwarf pine), grasslands, rocks, lakes, shadows (additionally clouds were dis−tinguished on data from 1987/09/01). It allowed to select forest areas with producer accuracy not worse than 97.69% and user accuracy not worse than 98.31%. On corrected Landsat images Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI, an overall vegetation state) and Moisture Stress Index (MSI, canopy water content) were calculated. Vegetation indices discriminated forest state using the decision tree method. The worst overall condition was observed for the 1987 (about 21% of forest stands were in the worst condition and 87% were in medium condition), while the best one in 2005 (75.51% forest stands were in good condition and 10.66% were in the best condition). In case of 2011, the overall condition was quite good, but there were large areas with poor condition caused by bark beetle outbreaks. Proposed method allows for a fast and objective assessment of forest condition. It is possible to detect damaged areas or stands in poor condition. It can be complement for traditional methods of monitoring and management in forestry and nature protection.

Opis:
The work presented here aims at developing cover mask for monitoring forest health in Poland using remote sensing data. The main objective was to assess the impact of using the mask on forest condition monitoring combined with vegetation indices obtained from long-term satellite data. In this study, a new mask developed from the CORINE Land Cover 2012 (CLC2012) database is presented and its one-kilometer pixel size matched to low-resolution data derived from SPOT VEGETATION satellite registrations. For vegetation mapping, only pixels with a cover ≥50% of broad-leaved and mixed forests defined by CLC2012 were taken into account. The masked pixels were used to evaluate spatial variability in eight Natural-Forest Regions (NFRs). The largest coverages by masked forests were obtained in Sudetian (65.7%), Carpathian (65.9%) and Baltic (51.3%) regions. For other forest regions the coverage was observed to be around 30–50%. Time-series of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) comprising SPOT VEGETATION images from 1998 until 2014 were computed and cross-comparison analyses on ≥50% and <50% forest cover masks brought up frequent differences at a level higher than 0.05 NDVI in seven out of eight NFRs. An exception is the Sudetian region, where the data was highly consistent. Furthermore, the Mann-Whitney U non-parametric test revealed statistically significant differences in two regions: Baltic and Masurian-Podlasie NFR. The comparative analysis of NDVI confirmed that there is a need for additional investigation of the quality of newly developed forest mask combined with vegetation and meteorological data.
