Opis:
Changes of the groundwater levels in the area of clearcutting in a swampy habitat and moist mixed broadleaved forest are analysed in the paper. The aim of the research is to evaluate the influence of clearcutting on the amount of changes in groundwater levels. The research was carried out in two forestries located on the southern tip of Greater Poland, belonging to Siemianice Experimental Forest Farm. The analysis is based on data from wells located in ashalder swamp forest in Marianka forestry and moist broadleaved forest in Laski forestry. The research is based on the relation of groundwater levels in wells located in clearcutting and observation wells. The received relationship of groundwater levels helps estimate changes in groundwater table, depending on its depth before clearcutting. The research shows increases of groundwater levels in the area of clearcutting. Increments are significantly higher in moist broadleaved forest than in ashalder swamp forest.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to recognise the species composition of bats in two forest stands that differ in terms of habitat type and age class. The study was carried out in the Niepołomicka Forest (southern Poland). An ultrasound ‘time−expansion’ processing system with Pettersson D240× detector was used to identify bat species by their echolocation signals employing SonoBat v.2.9.7 software to analyse bioacoustic spectrograms. We set up 36 recording points located in: old−growth and young plantations within the hygric mixed coniferous forest type (Pino−Quercetum) and hygric deciduous forest type (Tilio−Carpinetum). The measurements were carried out in July 2013, from 8:30 PM to 0.00 AM. The occurrence of nine species of bats were documented (tab.) of which Pipistrellus pygmaeus, P. pipistrellus, Barbastella barbastellus, Myotis myotis, M. emarginatus, and M. daubentonii had not been previously recorded in the Niepołomicka Forest. P. pipistrellus, M. emarginatus, M. daubentonii, and E. serotinus were recorded only in old−growths, whereas Nyctalus leisleri, N. noctula, and P. pygmaeus were found within both habitat types. Only two of the species identified in the study (M. myotis, and B. barbastellus) occurred both in the plantations and old−growth of hygric deciduous forest as well as in hygric mixed coniferous forest. None of the detected species was recorded exclusively in old−growth of hygric mixed coniferous forest type. The occurrence of a given bat species in the studied forest habitats and age classes of forest stands can be associated with the availability of prey, divergent feeding strategies, and with the adaptations affecting the nature of flight and ways of locating prey. The obtained results widened the knowledge of the species composition of bat fauna in the Niepołomicka Forest. At least 13 bat species live here. Apart from the nine species found in this study, four other species were found there in past years (Plecotus auritus, M. bechsteinii, M. brandtii and M. mystacinus).

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the trophism of soils in the strict nature protection area using the soil trophic index (SIG). The ‘Rybitew’ strict protection area (224.2 ha, created in 1965), is located in the north−eastern part of the Kampinos National Park (central Poland). The results of field and laboratory studies of the physicochemical and chemical properties of soils made it possible to determine their trophism by the SIG index. In the ‘Rybitew’ strict protection area, significant typological diversity of soils (10 subtypes) was found. The soils belong to the following trophic groups determined by the SIG: mixed coniferous forests (BM), mixed broadleaved forests (LM), alder forest (swamp broadleaved forest site) (Ol) and soil developed from low and transitional peatlands. The average value and range of SIG for particular trophic groups was: 19 (15−23) for BM, 26 (25−28) for LM, 34 for Ol was well as 23 for organic soil developed from low peatland and 21 for organic soil made from transitional peatland. Most of the ‘Rybitew’ area is covered by Podzols, Brunic Arenosols and Luvisol occurring in the trophic group of BM and LM. A lot of the soils undergo acidification process, which leads to a reduction in their trophism due to the excessive share of pine in the stand. This causes the podzolization process of Luvisols and significant acidification of the upper horizons, high C:N value and the moder type ectohumus formation, especially in Haplic Gleysols and Haplic Phaeozems. The large typological and trophic diversity of soils and the vegetation covering them in the ‘Rybitew’ strict protection area confirm the rightness of its creation.

The forest sites and soil survey conducted by the Bureau for Forest Management and Geodesy, Branch in Lublin in the years 2009–2010 involved all of the Roztocze National Park (RNP). The studied area was 8335.31 ha. Throughout the Park, 417 soil sampling plots (open pits) and 2,400 auxiliary soil sampling plots (soil boreholes) were established. A total of 28 soil subtypes, subsumed under 14 soil types, were identified, with the most abundant soil type being rendzina. Furthermore, 17 forest site types were described, including 12 lowland and 5 upland forest site types. Two upland forest types (upland broadleaved forest and upland mixed broadleaved forest), were found to be predominant in the National Park.
Prace glebowo-siedliskowe wykonane przez Biuro Urządzania Lasu i Geodezji Leśnej Oddział w Lublinie w latach 2009–2010 objęły swym zasięgiem cały obszar RPN.

Opis:
Faunistic and ecological studies on saproxylic Collembola species were carried out in the Wigry National Park (NE Poland). Nine sites representing Tilio-Carpinetum, Serratulo-Pinetum and Peucedano-Pinetum habitats each including three different levels of disturbance were visited twice in 2015. Samples from fallen logs in different stages of decay, neighboring litter and soil as well as arboreal epiphytes were taken on each visit. The Collembola specimens were then extracted using Tullgren funnels resulting in a total of 73 838 specimens from 270 samples. Specimen identification revealed the occurrence of 63 species, including 5 saproxylobiontic, 7 saproxylophilous, 4 xerophilous species living in epiphytic mosses and lichens as well as 47 hemiedaphic or euedaphic species. This composition of saproxylic fauna seems to be typical for the region with the most diverse assemblages being found in Tilio-Carpinetum habitats, while Serratulo-Pinetum and Peucedano-Pinetum are clearly less diverse. Additionally, a slight decrease in the number of Collembola species with increasing forest disturbance was observed. Furthermore, an increase in the number of Collembola species with the degree of dead wood decomposition was also found. This indicates that saproxylic springtail assemblages are sensitive to anthropogenic changes.

Opis:
Two main typological systems (forest habitat types and phytosociological classification) are used in forest research in Poland. The paper presents relationships between forest associations and forest habitat types in mountain environment of the Promotional Forest Complex ‘Sudety Zachodnie' (SW Poland). The results show that the link between these two topological systems is rather weak and ambiguous. This has strong implications for nature conservation in Poland, where forestry databases are widely used for inventories of protected habitats (in the sense of Habitat Directive).

The study presents the results of MANOVA of tree slenderness. The study material comprised 72 larch trees in a dominant stand of different age classes growing in fresh mixed coniferous (BMśw), fresh mixed deciduous (LMśw) and fresh deciduous (Lśw) forest habitats. The slenderness of each larch tree was calculated as the ratio of tree height [m] to breast height diameter [cm]. Basic statistical characteristics were also established. A three−way analysis of variance was performed assessing the statistical significance of the impact of forest habitat type, age and biosocial position of trees in the stand. A similar analysis was done for two basic measurement characteristics of trees – breast height diameter and height.

The aim of this paper is to present a characteristic of loess permanent gullies, which form the branched erosion system, with the total length of almost 7.8 km, dissecting an erosion-denudation dry valley. Only 20%of the gully system catchment is cultivated as the result of steep slopes and considerable height differences up to 100 m. 80%of the catchment is covered by fir coniferous forest and Carpathian beech forest, and gully development is the result of intensive forest exploitation. Five types of gullies have been selected on the basis of the runoff directions, which are determined by the following: original relief, runoff concentration from fields, runoff concentration from fallplaces, skidding and course of forest roads used to carry a timber.

Opis:
In uneven−aged forests, age does not apply to the whole stand but to individual trees. Therefore age of individual trees is rather represented by their thickness, and dbh distribution types become the measure of their age. The distinguished dbh distribution types show individual uneven−aged forest development phases: type A – optimum phase, type B – initial phase, type C – future phase and type D – ageing phase. In the optimum uneven−aged forest development phase, 'prescribed cut according to silviculture needs' should be similar or equal to volume increment. In the initial development phase, such 'prescribed cut' should represent 60−80% of current volume increment, while in the future forest development phase, it should equal the current volume increment or exceed it by 20%. In the ageing forest development phase, 'prescribed cut according to silviculture needs' should be higher than the current volume increment by 10−30%. Selection−type forest management should be a model one for uneven−aged forests. Selection−type forests are close to the natural state and constitute a stable forest ecosystem with high resistance to biotic and abiotic factors and by reducing and dispersing the management risk they better fulfil their multiple functions.
