Opis:
Presence of plant species, associated with ancient forests (continuous existence >200 years) can be used for assessing woodland biodiversity. The aim of this study is to specify which plant species, included in the ancient forests plant species list, can indicate old woodlands in parks and what plant features are characteristic for certain habitat types. Richest in ancient forest plant species are those fragments of woodlands, which have existed continuously for at least 120 years, and their fragments suffered least from human pressure during that time, whereas recent woodlands are characterized by a small share of ancient forest indicator species and domination of nitrophilous species. Investigated plants usually propagate vegetatively, their seeds are of a small size and they have regularly, densely set leaves. Plants associated with ancient woodlands are good indicators of woodland continuity in parks so they can be used for age assessment in these areas. Accumulation of such plants can be a useful criterion in parks evaluation. Proposed idea of sustainable management of a park space, including selection of areas of a great ecological value, can be a chance to preserve woodland biodiversity.

Opis:
Alien brambles (Rubus, Rosaceae) generate significant ecological and nature conservational threats worldwide, however, the European flora and vegetation is not seriously affected by their impacts. In this study, I report on the distribution and habitats of alien brambles in Hungary, on the basis of comprehensive field studies and complete herbarium revision. The first introduction of a non-native species of bramble (R. phoenicolasius) was reported in 1999 in the country. R. armeniacus was first recognized in 2014 (but it had been present probably decades earlier). It typically occurs in forest-poor landscapes, in regions with larger closed forests it is mainly confined to plantations, but few occurrences in nature-like stand are also found. The occur- rences in the forest steppe region indicate its drought tolerance; besides, it is the only bramble species present in the areas of typical forest-steppe climate. The species is obviously advancing (with more than 100 localities altogether) and constitutes an actual threat for the diversity and structure of fringes and wooded grassland mosaics in drier regions. Two new casual aliens, R. laciniatus and R. occidentalis, are reported here for the first time for Hungary. Another two species, R. odoratus and R. xanthocarpus, are known only from cultivation.

Opis:
The aim of the research described in this paper is to classify groundwater level patterns in pine stands of forest fresh sites. The approach has been employed with the view to facilitate explaining interactions between physiographic characteristics and groundwater dynamics in prospective research. The methods which have been employed so far for explanation of groundwater level dynamics interactions with local physiographic conditions do not let to draw firm conclusions. The classification of groundwater dynamics patterns requires employing more sophisticated methods, because of a relatively extensive range of groundwater dynamics site-to-site variability expressed, e.g., by amplitude and cycle period. The methods of groundwater patterns classification proposed in the literature focused either on hydrogeological criteria or, if related to forest ecosystems, focused on water balance elements in forest habitats. The area selected for investigation represented typical features for the Northern European Lowland forests defined by soil and form of terrain pattern shaped by the last glacial period (Vistulian glaciation) and dominant share of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in stand species composition. The research period covered the 2002-2007 hydrological years. The measurement used in analysis covered 35 sites equipped with measurement wells.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono analizę możliwości zastosowania zobrazowań hiperspektralnych HySpex do wykonania map rozmieszczenia poszczególnych gatunków drzewostanów leśnych, na przykładzie Puszczy Białowieskiej. W tym celu przeprowadzono kilka wariantów klasyfikacji przy użyciu metody Spectral Angle Mapper. Całą procedurę wykonano w oprogramowaniu ENVI 5.3 (Environmental for Visualizing Images), w module specjalnie dedykowanym danym hiperspektralnym. Metodyka badawcza obejmuje: wstępne przetwarzanie obrazów, tworzenie wzorców do klasyfikacji, procedurę klasyfikacji SAM i finalną ocenę dokładności uzyskanych wyników.
This paper contains an analysis of use of hyperspectral images HySpex to create maps of tree species distribution within Bialowieza Forest. To this end, a couple of variants of image classification with the use of Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) method were carried out. Whole procedure was conducted in ENVI software environment (Environmental for Visualizing Images) intended for this kind of dataset. In the beginning, the classification process involves the hyperspectral images pre processing and training samples collection. Next, SAM algorithm as well as an estimation of precision of the classification were performed. Finally, land cover layouts for tree species distribution within the extent of hyperspectral array were generated. The accuracy of tree species detection was estimated on the basis of data derived from forest taxations. Overall accuracies of classification based on HySpex imagery were approximately 77%. The highest possible precisions were obtained for alder, pine and oak tree stands. In other cases (birch and spruce) diversified results for producer’s and user’s accuracy were achieved, which could be explained by various kinds of forest stands and characteristics of test samples used for an assessment of image classification results. On the grounds of the land cover layouts it is workable to indicate forest areas with diversified tree species distribution within Bialowieza Forest. Furthermore, remote sensing data obtained with the use of HySpex scanner has a lot of potential in forest inventory. An actualization of inventory database, woodland modelling and simulations of forest phenomena seem to be technically and economically reasoned.

A numerical analysis of the phytosociological relevés from ancient and recent woodland on a mesic forest site in central Poland was carried out. Three groups of forest stands were recognised: planted with Pinus, recent and ancient oak-hornbeam Tilio-Carpinetum. The species of ancient woodland occurred mainly in ancient oak-hornbeam forest stands, however some ferns: Dryopteris carthusiana, D. dilatata and D. filix-mas, and an orchid species Epipactis helleborine, are to be found mainly or exclusively in recent forests. The occurrence of ancient forest species in recent woods may be putatively explained by long-distance wind dispersal or by the thriving in situ in unrecognised small wood patches. Twelve ancient woodland indicators (i.e. 36% of a total number found in the region under study) occur exclusively in ancient woodland. It underlines the role of passive species protection in the maintenance of the regional species diversity.

Opis:
DNA markers are currently the most precise tool for forest tree species identification and can be used for comparative analyses of plant material. Molecular diagnosis of evidence and reference material is based on comparing the structure of DNA markers duplicated in the PCR reaction and estimation of the DNA profiles obtained in studied wood samples. For this purpose, the microsatellite DNA markers are the most suitable tool because of their high polymorphism and accurate detection of structural changes in the genome. The analysis of tree stump DNA profiles let avoid timely collection of data such as tree age, diameter, height and thickness, although such a piece of information may advantageous in wood identification process. For each examined tree species, i.e. Pinus sylvestris L., Picea abies (L.) Karst., Quercus robur L. and Q. petraea (Matt.) Liebl., Fagus sylvatica L., Betula pendula L., and Alnus glutinosa L., wood identification was possible via the DNA profiles established on a basis of minimum 4 microsatellite nuclear DNA loci, and at least one cytoplasmatic (mitochondrial or chloroplast) DNA marker. Determination of the DNA profiles provided fast and reliable comparison of genetic similarity between material of evidence (wood, needles, leaves, seeds) and material of reference (tree stumps) in the forest. This was done with high probability (approximately 98– 99%).

Opis:
The juvenile height growth of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) was studied in 1095 spruce provenances included in the IUFRO inventory provenance test of 1964/68. Trees growing on the experimental site established in Krynica in the Beskid Sądecki Mts. (Carpathians) were measured at ca. 3-year intervals in the period 1969-1988, from the age of 6 years (i.e. 2 years of planting) to 25 years. The variability of tree height in this spruce population was assessed on the basis of the means expressed in units of standard deviation, calculated for each provenance and each geographical region of Krutzsch in successive years of measurement. Using the standardised units made it possible to characterise the dynamics of spruce growth in provenances from 95 geographical regions representing the whole European range of the species. The effects of geographical region, tree age and their interaction on the variability of height growth within this range were estimated using multi-way analysis of variance with replicated measurements. The regions showing similar spruce growth trends were grouped by using hierarchical cluster analysis. The results on the juvenile dynamics of height growth showed that spruce provenances from various geographical regions of Krutzsch differ significantly in their genetic reactivity. Based on this, several groups of regions were identified: (1) regions with average or weak but stable spruce growth characterised by no significant effects of age or genotype × age interaction in the whole measuring period, or regions with height growth improving with age; (2) regions of spruce provenances constituting a selection elite, with very good height growth in the whole measuring period or in its later part, characterised by no G × A interaction; (3) regions with varied genetic reactivity of height growth dynamics in the juvenile period, and regions of Scandinavian populations with poorest height growth in the whole measuring period. The studies proved that spruce provenances from the regions of Štiavnické Pohorie, Low Tatras (Slovakia), Masurian Lakeland, Augustów Lakeland, Podlasie, Silesian Beskid Mts., Beskid Żywiecki Mts. (Poland), Jutland (Denmark), Bihor Mts., Transylvania, and Eastern Carpathians (Romania) have a high selection value.

Opis:
The composition and structure of the breeding bird community in the Borki Forest in north-eastern Poland were investigated during two separate periods: 1994–1996 and 2012–2014. Bird censuses were carried out in three plots located in mature oak-hornbeam, ash-alder and mixed coniferous forest stands. A standard combined mapping technique for estimating the number of breeding birds was applied. A total of 74 bird species bred at least once within any plot during 1994–1996 or 2012–2014. The structure of the bird assemblages on particular plots displayed a high degree of similarity, exceeding 75%, which means that they represent essentially the same bird community. However, the investigated assemblages have changed substantially over the 20 years. Both, the number of breeding bird species and the population densities on all plots, were much higher in 2012–2014 than in 1994–1996. The mean number of breeding species on all plots was over 50% higher in 2012–2014 than in 1994–1996, whereas the mean total density of breeding pairs increased by more than 60%. Total population densities on the plots increased as a result of an increase in population densities of individual bird species combined with an increase in the number of breeding species. Due to different rates of population growth for certain species, also the composition of dominating species group have changed. The observed changes in the avifauna of the Borki Forest were most probably due to an enrichment of the forest habitats structure, which was caused by natural factors, such as ageing of forest stands, forest succession and a change in water regime by beaver dams, as well as by forest management, including group felling within or in the vicinity of plots and uncovering of the forest edge.

The studies were carried out in the Włoszczowa Forest Unit, in 9 ash stands differing in respect of age, origin (natural, artificial), site and in the nursery on 3 quarters differing due to a silvicultural method (transplanted and not transplanted) and seedlings age. In each stand an analysis of disease symptoms was carried out on 100 trees (2 - 20 years old stands) or 50 trees (21 - 80 years old stands) growing side by side in central part of the stand, while in the nursery in each block 200 seedlings were analyzed (4 sectors with 50 seedlings each). From the infected seedlings and trees 120 fragments of dead branches, living branches with cankers, and dead roots were taken. Identification of fungi was made on the basis of fructification and over 300 isolations of fungi on malt agar medium. The most frequent disease symptoms in ash stands were: the dead top (34.7% trees), the dying of whole branches (83.5%), the dying of the top of branches (20.1%), the occurrence of healed (36.0%) and unhealed cankers (18.9%) and the slime flux (23.7%) on the trunk, also the chlorosis of leaves (7.5%) and their atrophy (11.2%). Most of the types of disease symptoms appeared irrespectively of the tree age, origin and site, sometimes showing only a difference in the frequency of occurrence. On the seedlings in the nursery the shoot discolouration, healed and unhealed cankers on shoots and necrosis of a part of leaves were recorded most frequently. Disease symptoms occurred more frequently on 4-year-old seedlings in comparison with 3-year-old. In respect of transplanted seedlings the leaves dying was more frequent. Within cankers and on dead tops of shoots the most frequent were: Alternaria alternata, Chalara sp., Cytospora ambiens, Diplodia mutila, Fusarium lateritium, Gloeosporidiella turgida, Phomopsis controversa and Phomopsis scobina. In sparsely found dead roots of living trees appeared mostly: Cryptosporiopsis radicicola, Cylindrocarpon destructans and Phialocephala sp.
Badania prowadzono w Nadl. U sadzonek szkółkowanych częściej dochodziło do obumierania liści. W obrębie nekroz i na obumarłych szczytach pędów najczęściej stwierdzano grzyby: Alternaria alternatei, Chalara sp., Cytospora ambiens, Diplodia mutila, Fusarium lateritium, Gloeosporidiella turgida, Phomopsis controversa i Phomopsis scobina. W nielicznie stwierdzanych obumarłych korzeniach żywych drzew występowały głównie: Cryptosporiopsis radicicola, Cylindrocarpon destructans i Phialocephala sp.

During the period from 2003 to 2011 observations of carabid community regression and selected habitat indicators were conducted on 15 plots in stands that had been disturbed by a hurricane and on 15 plots in control stands. Regression of carabid communities delayed 3−4 years was observed, consisting in increases in the number of species and the proportion of xerophilous species and reductions in the percentage of forest fauna and in mean individual biomass. Only after 7 years did these indicators begin to show a tendency in the reverse direction, albeit not very strong, indicating that carabid communities had begun to regenerate.

It presents the basic results concerning the distribution, selectiveness and habitat preferences of hole-nesters and the birds connected with old forests in connection with habitat characteristics. The studied areas were dominated by hole-nesters, and a significant share was of birds connected with gaps left after broken trees. A large group was made up by birds which collect invertebrates among trees and then the species which feed on trunks and branches. Large dimensions of pine trees and numerous cracks in bark, cracks in trunks and hollows under windfallen tress served as microhabitats for particular bird species. The index of species diversity and number of pairs were similar in every area, probably due to dozens of years of forest protection, thanks to which similar quantity and quality parameters developed in the areas.

Opis:
Owing to the unpredictability of changes in a habitat, a silvicultural aim should be treated as a "vision" of the future stand and adjusted in the course of its development. To meet the rational principles of stand conversion, it is necessary to fully use the natural processes occurring in forest ecosystems. More attention should be given to the species of early succession stages, which are better adapted to the changing habitat conditions, and richer species composition should be ensured to disperse silvicultural risks.

Opis:
After the lapse of 48 years, a renewed study on species composition of desmids was carried out at the Błoto peat bog in the Niepołomice Forest. During this period, the peat bog underwent far-reaching changes caused by man. Out of 41 species recorded by Wasylik (1955), the occurrence of only 11 was confirmed. However, 14 species absent at the time of the earlier study were found. In all, 25 species of desmids were found. The present state of the desmid flora was brought about by increase of pH, draining of the area, disappearance of peat mosses and probably by eutrophication of waters in the studied area.
