The article presents the results of research on changes in forest areas in the PuszczaZielonka Landscape Park. An analysis of forest area transformations was carried out with the use of landscape metrics. Archival cartographic material in the form of topographic maps in the scale of 1 : 25 000, coming from four different periods (1830, 1890, 1940 and 1979/80) and a generalized Database of Topographic Object (BDOT) dated 2010, were used for the research. The result of the research are quantitative and qualitative characteristics of changes in the area and the spatial layout of the forest areas and a model of landscape processes taking place in the Puszcza Zielonka Landscape Park. The first analyzed period (1830–1890) was characterized by a small regression of forest area (index of changes WD = ‒0.05), whereas fragmentation and dissection of forest patches prevailed. The second period (1890–1940), despite the slight increase in forest areas (WD = +0.03), was characterized by a decrease in the number of patches and a reduction of their borders’ length. In the third period (1940-1979), the landscape increment process (WD = +0.27), mainly related to the filling of non-forested areas within forest complexes, prevailed. After 1979, the direction of changes was similar but on a much smaller scale (WD = +0.04).

Vegetation studies in different types of settlements are conducted in western Poland since 2007. Out of 140 analysed settlements in the Ziemia Lubuska region, the most common were villages of oval (65) and linear (25) shape. For detailed vegetation studies conducted within spatial complexes, 33 settlements with best preserved structure have been chosen. Their origin has been traced back to the XIII or XIV century. In this study those data have been completed with the description of landscape transformation around 15 villages, for which the historical cartographic sources were available. The share of forests, as indicator of intensity of human impact has been estimated on the maps from the years 1822-1828, 1933-1938 and 2003. The obtained results confirm the tendency of the increment of forest area in last decades. There is however distinct dynamics in the landscape transformation. Similar share of forests on maps from 1822-28 and on contemporary ones does not indicate their persistence, there are observed both decline and emerging of new forest areas.

Modern technologies make it possible to obtain a lot of diverse information about the soil properties using satellite images, but field studies are also required to create or refine digital soil maps. To create a digital soil map scaled 1:25 000 in 2016, a classical field study was conducted with the laying of soil sections in places with the same coordinates as in the mapping of 1982. It allowed to carry out retrospective monitoring of transformation of morphogenetic and agrochemical properties of soils of the southern forest-steppe of the Republic of Bashkortostan (Russia) for the 34-year period of farm use. Thus, the correction and digitization of the soil map allowed to establish that arable land occupies 69.792 ha (67.9%) in the structure of agricultural land (102 811 ha). The monitoring showed deterioration of the main characteristics of arable soil fertility: the diminishing of humus-accumulative horizons, significant decrease of humus content (p ≤ 0.05), a small but reliable acidification of the medium reaction and reducing labile phosphorus. Losses of organic matter occurred mainly in the most fertile soils; their proportion decreased from 55.9% of the total area of agricultural land to 12.4%.

Opis:
The article presents the main forms of forest management, applied by the Forestry Unit in the Free City Of Krakow (1815–1846). For the purpose by the article, forest management is understood as the total of economic operations in the field of use, care and renewal of forests, which are a refinement of the methods of its breeding and decorating. It was shown that the measurements of forests, governmental and private, and then their division into the felling were of primary importance for the discussed issue. Economic plans were equally important, which apart from data on forests (location, area, planted species and their age) also contained information on planned forest crops and intended logging. They were prepared by the governmental district forester. Th e use of the Regulation of the Governing Senate of 1829 regarding the „classification and marking of wood”, including the content of reports that delegated officials of the Department of Public Income prepared, was discussed in detail. They contained detailed data on the firewood and material cut out in individual „full-time years”, the remanent inventory (wood left for the next fulltime year), and the destination of timber harvested in „national forests” (construction of government buildings, roads and bridges; equipment for primary schools and government mines, heating allowances for hospitals, officials, parish priests). The subject of supervision over forest management in private property was discussed. Attention was paid to the practical significance of forest maps prepared by the government geometers. It was mentioned about the transport of timber by water (Vistula, Przemsza) and land, organization of the Vistula composition and places to collect wood before it was floated. The attention was paid to the care for forest infrastructure, which formed forester’s lodges, in the final period of the Republic of Krakow, also dryers for pine, spruce and larch seeds. The issue of hunting in fiscal and private forests has also been mentioned. The forest management methods used in the 19th century in the Kingdom of Poland, Prussia and Austria were also presented.
Zasygnalizowano też problematykę łowiectwa w lasach skarbowych i prywatnych. Przedstawiono metody gospodarowania lasami, stosowane w XIX w. w Królestwie Polskim, Prusach i Austrii.

Opis:
This article describes how the first forest maps in the Congress Kingdom of Poland were prepared and used. The source materials include the decisions of the governing authorities, special instructions for the forest surveyors, and original letters and reports related to the implementation of particular regulations. The principal cartographic materials consist of 22 surviving forestry area maps contained in the collections of the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw. The following elements were studied: title text of the maps, their mathematical foundations, the scope of their content, their graphics and supplementary tables. The principles of forest cartography, as clearly set out in the documents, were implemented effectively in practice. Great credit for this goes to the chief organiser of the whole operation, Ludwik Plater, the general director of the State Forests. Thanks to his efforts, the Polish forestry system already had valuable thematic maps at its disposal in the 1810s. Together, they probably covered the entire area of the Kingdom. In the creation of the maps, a variety of Prussian and Austrian cartographic materials from the beginning of the 19th century was applied. The scale of the analysed maps was around 1:66 700. They were not required to meet high standards of geometrical accuracy – they were made hurriedly, during tours of forestry administrative areas. The rules for their editing were stated somewhat perfunctorily in the instructions, and consequently there were certain differences between maps in terms of content and graphical appearance. The main element of the maps’ content was the extent of the state forests and their division into regions and subregions. A significant novelty was the use of a uniform green colour to denote forest – previously pictorial symbols in the shape of trees had frequently been used. Another important element was the marking of the boundaries of areas of forest designated for felling. These were drawn every year in red. Other objects shown included foresters’ lodges, certain rivers, roads, and neighbouring villages and towns. The contemporary importance of these maps is variable, and depends primarily on the range of content given in the tables. Some of the maps dated 1818 contain only information on the assignment of forests to administrative areas or regions, and their surface areas. Maps from 1816−1817 also contain, among other things, information about tree species and forest types. In short, there is no doubt that ‘Plater’s cartography' was a short, but important, stage in the development of the forest cartography.

Opis:
This article examines the history of forest cartography in Poland. It describes the results of two years of research carried out by the author at the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw. The aim of the work was to recognise the forest maps stored in the archives and to give their general description. An original procedure was developed for this purpose. Investigations were limited to the Cartographic Collection, which contains more than 15,000 maps, and the collection of Cartography Department Acquisitions consisting of more than 500 maps. Based on the inventory records and catalogue cards, 1356 items which might be forest maps were selected, and underwent detailed visual analysis. The majority of them (75%) were documented photographically. At the initial stage, 150 maps were rejected because of the formal reasons. The rest included 463 foreign−language maps: 207 in German (mainly from the 1796−1806 period); 242 in Russian (particularly from years 1868−1914; fig. 1), of which 180 showed areas in present−day Belarus; 13 in Latin (mostly from the 1795−1804 period); and one in French (dated 1810). The collection of Polish forest maps consisted of 743 items. The largest group (549 maps) depicted areas of the so−called Polish Kingdom, which existed in the years 1815−1914 (fig. 2). These maps were divided into eight main types. The number of produced maps decreased significantly after the January Uprising. The remaining 194 Polish forest maps cover areas in different regions, date from different periods or are undated. The proposed method enabled the effective attainment of the set objectives, and may be applied to work carried out at other state archives. The number of forest maps held at the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw was found to be greater than the initial estimates. The collected documentation will enable the preparation of more detailed studies, devoted to: Polish forest maps for the area of the Polish Kingdom from the period of 1815−1914, German ones from years 1796−1806 and Russian ones from the period of 1865−1914. Analysis of the other designated groups will be possible once the collections would have been supplemented with items from other archives.

An approach to the implementation of spatial inventory of greenhouse gas sinks and emissions in forestry sector is presented. The algorithms for disaggregation of official statistical data on forests at the regional level, and formation of geodistributed database using the digital map of land use are proposed. As an example the forests of Subcarpathian Voivodeship of Poland were investigated. This study presents the results of modeling the flow of carbon in forest phytomass taking into account different tree species composition, age class and other characteristics. The ‘regional’ coefficients for phytomass and carbon deposited were clarified taking into account regional specificity. Also an algorithm for determining aboveground and underground phytomass of tree by its stock and forests of different types has been created. The correlation between the total area and stock for each species of forest-forming stands was analysed. The multilayer digital maps of deposited carbon, and greenhouse gas emissions in forests of Subcarpathian Voivodeship were created. For the spatial inventory of forest phytomass the territory of voivodeship was divided into square areas 2x2 kilometers in size, and stock phytomass in each such elementary area has been analised. Acheaved results were verified using GIS technology, and forest inventory data.

Opis:
This article analyses the accuracy of the presentation of forests on Polish topographic maps. Four test polygons were selected, differing in forest coverage and spatial distribution of forest areas in order to improve the objectivity of the study. All the polygons were located in Roztocze. Four maps were tested: System 1965 (1:50 000), GUGIK80 (1:100 000), PUWG92 (1:10 000), and VMap L2 (1:50 000). The forest areas from the maps and aerial photographs were vectorised; then the photographs were converted into an orthophotomap that constituted the reference material. All materials were coherent in terms of content validity. After vectorising the range of the forests, sampling was conducted within the hexagonal fields. A comparison of the obtained values provided the basis for maps that presented the errors. The analysis permitted several conclusions to be drawn, generally stating that the credibility of maps within the scope of presenting forest areas depends on the scale and purpose of the map, and that any analyses based on these maps should assume that the results should have higher tolerance levels.
