Opis:
The knowledge on the ichthyofauna community in forest complexes in our country is mainly limited to few information on fish species found in rivers and reservoirs located in the protected areas. Hence, the aim of present study was to evaluate the importance of forested and non−forested areas, which include small rivers, on the occurrence of fish communities. The main criteria of evaluation were species richness, biodiversity and density of fish from rivers located in forested and non−forested areas in Roztocze and Puszcza Solska (south−eastern of Poland). The 12 study sites in the two groups of small rivers located on forested and non−forested areas were chosen (tab. 1). The control fishing was performed by electrofishing using IUP−12 gear. The total of 779 individuals of fish and lamprey belonging to 22 species were caught during the study. In the sections of rivers located in non−forested areas we noted 18 species, while in the rivers in forested areas – 16 ones. The analysis of the abundance domination showed that the dominant species in the rivers sections on non−forested areas were perch, roach and gudgeon, while in rivers located in forested areas: gudgeon, dace and brown trout. Simultaneously, in abundance of fish fauna from rivers in forested area a significant share of eastern sculpin, burbot and European brook lamprey were noted. The fish communities from both habitats showed similar values of biological diversity indices, but slightly higher density was observed in the rivers located in non−forested areas. The fish species composition was highly dependent on the close surroundings of the watercourse and the type of riparian zone. For the habitats from river located in non−forested areas the common, associated with aquaculture and also invasive fish species were characteristic. However, in the rivers in wooded areas, the typical for small streams and the rheophilic fish species were more frequent. The results of present study showed, that the largest differences in the dominance in fish structure and indicators of fidelity to the habitat preferences between the groups of rivers were determined.

Opis:
Paper presents analysis of differences in conventional wood density of Scots pine measured at breast height regarding the geographical location of stands, forest habitat type, stand age and associated parameters such as density in the mid−length of the stem, density in the upper end of the stem and diameter at breast height. To investigate the impact of these factors, an analysis of covariance was used in accordance with two models specifically developed for this purpose. We found dependence of conventional wood density on the type of forest habitat and geographical location of the stand. The highest density was detected in dry coniferous forests, while the smallest in fresh mixed coniferous forests. Scots pine wood from Zielona Góra Forest (western Poland) characterised with the highest density, while from the Knyszyn Primeval Forest (eastern Poland)− with the lowest.

The paper presents the results of the researches carried out in three hydrological years 2002/2003, 2003/2004 and 2009/2010 of a different precipitation sums. The researches were carried out at catchment of water pond number one, located at Wielisławice Forestry of Siemianice Experimental Farm. The area of investigated catchment of pond number one is about 7.5 ha and its forestation totals 100%. It is situated in a part of Niesób catchment – left- side tributary of Prosna River. In the investigated catchment the predominant fresh habitats spreading through 98% area. Moist mixed broadleaved forest is located at the west part of pond. Proper podzols are predominant in soil cover analysed catchment and to a little extent there are muckous soils. Whereas predominant soil textural group there is loamy sand. The researches indicates that the decrease of water storages in all of the analysed habitats and was from 4 mm in fresh mixed coniferous forest to 18 mm in moist mixed broadleaved forest in a dry 2004/2005 hydrological year. Whereas an increase of water storages was observed in these forest habitats in the next two hydrological years. The highest fluctuations – from 63 mm in fresh mixed coniferous forest to 82 mm in moist mixed broadleaved forest were observed in wet 2009/2010 hydrological year. The researchers also showed that changes of water storages in analysed soil of forest habitat, in winter and summer hydrological half-year was connected to the groundwater levels in these habitats. The coefficient correlation was 0.95 and this relationship was significant at α = 0.01 level.

Opis:
The article presents the size and weight of needles in 30−year−old Scots pine stands over one year with regard to the site conditions in which they grow (fresh mixed coniferous and fresh coniferous habitats). Two rectangular 1−hectare sample plots, which differed from one another only with the habitat type, were set up in Maszewo forestry in the Cybinka Forest District (western Poland). The plots were divided into 100 one−acre subplots, which were ascribed numbers from 1 to 100. In order to pick 10 plots a random number generator was used. The middle of the chosen plot became the central point of the 1−acre circular sample plots, where the measurements of all diameters at breast height and the height of every fifth tree were taken. Moreover, it was also the place where a square needle collection container (20 cm high, 1 m2 area) was located. The empty containers were placed in both experimental plots on 1st August 2017 and they were emptied on the first day of each month, throughout the entire year. The entire material was dried at the temperature of 65°C with an induced air flow. The needle mass was measured with the accuracy up to 0.001 g. Out of the samples collected each month, 300 needles were chosen at random in order to measure their length (after they were scanned with WinFOLIA program the size of each individual needle was established). Throughout the entire year, on fresh coniferous habitat the mass of the fallen needles was 2.8203 t/ha and it was by over 20% higher than it was determined for the fresh coniferous habitat. The lowest mass of the needle fall in each stand was in January, and the greatest in September on the fresh coniferous habitat, whereas in October on the fresh mixed coniferous habitat. In both of these cases, it was more than a half of the needle mass for the entire year. The average length of the fallen needles was in each month smaller on the fresh coniferous habitat and the differences between the analyzed stands were significant. The difference was the smallest (3.3%) in May, while the greatest (18.8%) in February. Moreover, significant differences in the length of the needles in the particular months in both types of stands were observed. The coefficient of variation for the needles length on the fresh mixed coniferous habitat ranged from 17.4 to 22.8%, whereas on the other habitat it varied between 14.2 and 21.6%. The mean of the coefficients of variation for the particular months was lower by 2.0% and for fresh coniferous habitat it reached 18.25%.

Opis:
The article is a continuation of research on the relationship between forest habitat type and economic aspects of forest management. It assesses the impact of forest habitat types on reforestation costs. As a part of the implementation of the assumed work objectives, economic activities related to afforestation were identified. The research was carried out using the passive experiment method. The research was of registration and observational character. During the acquisition of the necessary data, there was no interference in the forestry work. The costs were analysed in three categories: total costs, tangible costs and intangible costs. Research conducted on the basis of source data obtained from 629 forest plots with a total area of 1100 ha. Based on the results of the research, it was found that the type of forest habitat significantly differentiated all the analyzed costs of reforestation. The forest habitat type differentiated material costs (48%) to a greater extent than intangible costs (43%). In addition, reforestation of deciduous forests has been proven to generate higher forest renewal costs than coniferous forest habitats. The costs of forest regeneration in forest habitats were higher than the costs incurred in coniferous habitats. Information on differences in forest management costs in relation to forest habitats can be used in further research on the forest management support system. The presented research contributes to the development of work on building economic models of the stands. These models must take into account not only the general economic aspects, but also the natural aspects of the forest that affect financial flows related to forest management.

Opis:
Chemical properties and fertility of soils were compared under spruce, mixed and beech stands in four types of forest habitat (mountain broadleaf forest, mountain mixed broadleaf forest, mountain mixed coniferous forest and mountain coniferous forest) in 373 sites of forest monitoring in the Stołowe Mountains National Park, SW Poland. Soils under the spruce stands had higher organic carbon pools in their upper horizons, but lower pH, increased activity of exchangeable aluminum, lower contents of exchangeable base cations, available potassium and magnesium, resulting finally in lower values of the soil trophic index (SIG). The negative impact of spruce monocultures on the physicochemical soil properties was much stronger in the eutrophic habitats (dedicated to broadleaf forest) than in dystrophic ones. Weak positive effect of the beech introduction on soils in the dystrophic habitats indicated that the conversion of the coniferous into mixed or deciduous stands would not cause a rapid improvement in the physicochemical properties deformed previously under spruce monocultures.

Opis:
The influence of water conditions on the condition and growth of tree stands has been analysed in the context of the climatic and hydrological functions forest plays. Long observational series obtained for precipitation, outflow and depths below the surface of the water table have been put together with measured increases in the breast-height diameters of Scots pines and the severity of crown defoliation observable in selected tree species growing on the Polish Lowland, in order to determine the overall scope to the reaction stand condition manifests in the face of ongoing variability of water conditions within forest. An overall improvement in the condition of stands over the last 20 years does not disguise several-year cyclicity to changes capable of shaping the situation, i.a. departures from long-term mean values for precipitation totals and groundwater levels. The condition of stands is seen to worsen in both dry and wet years. Analysis of the degree to which pine, spruce and broadleaved stands experience defoliation points to spruce stands responding most to extreme hydro-climatic conditions. Extreme situations as regards water resources were seen to involve a response over two-year time intervals in the case of coniferous stands. Unsurprisingly, optimal growing-season (June-September) precipitation totals correspond with long-term average figures, while being slightly higher for spruce (at 384 mm), than for Scots pine or broadleaved species (375 mm). The relationships reported gain confirmation in analysis of periodic change in breast-height diameter increments characterising Scots pines, whose growth is seen to depend closely, not only on precipitation, but also above all on the depth of the water table in the summer half-year. Optimal depths of the water table proved to be different, being around 20 cm below ground in the case of marshy coniferous forest, 80 cm in wet habitats, and 135 cm in fresh habitats. Depending on the possibilities for water to soak into the rooting zone of trees there were even twofold differences in measured growth increments in Scots pine (as the dominant species in Poland’s lowland habitats). The maintenance of stable water conditions (as the most variable environmental factor in forest) should be an overriding aim of management activity in this habitat. When account is taken of the influence of the state of water resources on biomass production, and then on the intensity of evapotranspiration and the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, it is seen how important it is to achieve improvements in water conditions in forests, as such an important factor in combating climate change.

Attempts to study biodiversity hotspots on a regional scale should combine compositional and functionalist criteria. The detection of hotspots in this study uses one ecologically similar group of high conservation value species as hotspot indicators, as well as focal habitat indicators, to detect the distribution of suitable environmental conditions. The method is assessed with reference to thermophilous forests in Poland – key habitats for many rare and relict species. Twenty-six high conservation priority species were used as hotspot indicators, and ten plant taxa characteristic of the Quercetalia pubescenti-petraeae phytosociological order were used as focal habitat indicators. Species distribution data was based on a 10 × 10 km grid. The number of species per grid square was interpolated by the ordinary kriging geostatistical method. Our analysis largely determined the distribution of areas with concentration of thermophilous forest flora, but also regional disjunctions and geographical barriers. Indicator species richness can be interpreted as a reflection of the actual state of habitat conditions. It can also be used to determine the location of potential species refugia and possible past and future migration routes.

Ectomycorrhizal communities associated with Pinus sylvestris growing on dry coniferous forest habitat after the fire were studied. In order to investigate the fire effect on ectomycorrhizal fungi and changes of soil parameters in the upper (0−15 cm) soil layer three study plots were established: 1 – the control, 2 – fire zone left for artificial renewal (with the economic method of renewal) and 3 – fire zone left for natural renewal. The analysis of mycorrhizae revealed presence of eight mycorrhizal fungi on Scots pine roots and the value of Shannon−Wiener species diversity index H’ equaled to 1.76. The most abundant were mycorrhizae formed by Tomentella feruginea (31.7%) and Hebeloma crustuliniforme (23.3%). The fraction of Paxillus involutus and Rhizopogon sp. mycorrhizae was 16.7% and 13.0%, respectively. The lowest was the number of Thelephora terrestris mycorrhizae (only 1.7%). At the site 2, number of mycorrhizal fungi diminished to five and Shannon−Wiener species diversity index was also lower (1.37). The predominant were mycorrhizae of Cenococcum geophilum (26.7%) and P. involutus (21.7%), whilst the lowest were mycorrhizae of Suillus luteus (1.7%). Although at the third site the number of ectomycorrhizal fungi was the same as on the site 2, the dominance of Thelephora terrestris (66.7%) caused that Shannon−Wiener’s species diversity index was the lowest (1.05). Mycorrhizae of Paxillus involutus and Wilcoxina mikolae were characterised by similar abundance (13.3% and 11.7%, respectively). The lowest number of mycorrhizae was observed for Tomentella sp. (3.3%). Analysis of soil parameters showed an increase of pH on burnt sites in comparison to the control. The soil of burnt sites were also characterised by lower value of C and C/N ratio than the soil on the control treatment. The result showed that ubiquitous mycorrhizal fungi, such as T. terrestis, are able to persist on roots in changed soil environment with low content of nutritions.

Investigations have been carried out on the soil material taken from 46 profiles representing lithogenic soils from non-forest areas of the Tatra National Park. When selecting soil material an altitude above sea level (over 1250 m a.s.l.), a rock parent type (non-calcareous and calcareous) were taken into account, in case of non calcerous soils, the weakly developed soils - rankers were selected. On the basis of the investigetions the following conclusions have been drawn: sorption properties of ectohumus horizons in most of investigated lithogenic soils (rankers and rendzinas) are differ- enciated and formed under the influence of parent rocks. Ectohumus of Oh horizons of rankers sorbed exchangeable cations in following order H+>Ca2+≥Mg2+>K+>Na+. In composition of cations in Oh horizons of rendzinas dominated cations of calcium and the order was as follows: Ca2+>Mg2+>H+>K+≥Na+. In ectohumus of Oh horizons of rendzinas occurring under bilberry heath and pine dwarf and rankers the composition of exchangeable ions as well as a degree of base saturation were close. In investigated soils sorption properties of mineral or organic-mineral horizons AC or ABC, occurring in direct contact with the parent rock, were formed under the influence of lithogenic factor.

The present research (1998-1999) was carried out to evaluate soil enzymatic activity in the deteriorated forest ecosystems within the operation range of the Puławy S.A. Nitrogen Factory. Investigation covered podzolic soils from strong and medium forest pollution zones. Objects from the Pulawy Forest Inspectoratejwere represented, i.e. samples from the Puławy district (Inspectorate Wronów) and Żyrzyn district (Inspectorate Zagórki). The obtained results indicate high degree of soil environment deterioration in the investigated forest habitats, in the form suppressed enzymatic activity and deformation of chemical properties. A significant increase in the enzymatic soil activity with the increasing distance from the nitrogen factory was observed. Changes in the activity of soil enzymes were related to the soil chemical properties.

Opis:
The study presents the relationships between larch slenderness and age, breast height diameter, height, crown width, crown projection area, crown length and habitat type. The study comprised larch trees in a dominant stand of different age classes growing in fresh mixed coniferous (BMśw), fresh mixed deciduous (LMśw) and fresh deciduous (Lśw) forest habitats. The slenderness of each larch was calculated as the ratio of tree height to breast height diameter. The crown projection area was calculated as a circle with a radius equal to the average radius of the crown. The average crown radius was established after its projection in the four main geographical directions. The crown length was calculated as the difference between the height of a tree and the height of crown location. Also an attempt was made to describe tree slenderness using multiple regression equations.

Opis:
Deep dystric Cambisols developed on the homogenous regoliths of granite in the Stołowe Mountains National Park (SW Poland). In general, the soils have a texture of gravelly sandy loam, apparently silty, the strong acid reaction and the base saturation below 30% throughout the profile (oligotrophic variant). Only the soils developed in lower parts of slopes have a base saturation up to 40−50% or more (oligo−mesotrophic and mesotrophic variants respectively). These soils rich in humus and biologically active create in the low mountain zone the habitats suitable for the mixed mountain forests and, in a less acid variant, for the broadleaf mountain forests. Combined trophic soil index reached the values from 29 to 33 that confirmed mesotrophic type of the forest habitats. Most Cambisols developed from granite in the Stołowe Mountains are currently covered with spruce stands of artificial origin. However, a phytosociological analyses of vegetation carried out in preserved beech stands documented the presence of Luzulo luzuloidis−Fagetum community of poor beech forest that should be considered a potentially natural forest community on these soils and the strategic goal of the forest reconstruction in the national park.

Opis:
The presented studies concerned seasonal changes in abundance and index of settlement (number of specimens per 100 g of tinder fungus) of beetles from the Ciidae family (Col.) colonising the fruiting bodies of tinder polypore Fomes fomentarius depending on the degree of decomposition of the fruiting body and forest habitat type where the fungus occurs.
