Opis:
The aim of the experiment was to compare the rehabilitating effect of three factors that may improve the degraded and very poor soils formed from loose sands: dolomite liming, use of a multi−component fertilizer with delayed action (Silvamix W) and temporary introduction of an admixture Alnus incana into the Pinus sylvestris plantation. The results of the factorial experiment after 9 years indicate that the soils on which the experiment was established cannot be afforested without prior rehabilitation treatments. The activity of dolomite was most effective while of Silvamix − weaker. Alder survived in the plantation composition only when used in combination with dolomite fertilization, then its rehabilitating effect was apparent. Rehabilitation relying on the use of dolomite at a rate of 2 t/ha in combination with a 50% admixture of alder in the pine plantation is recommended to be used in practice.

Opis:
Indigenous mycorrhizal colonisation of one (1/0) and two (2/0) year old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings from forest nurseries situated in the north-west part of Poland was investigated. Seedlings were fertilized after a schedule designed to satisfy their requirements which resulted from soil analysis of each nursery. In autumn needle nitrogen concentration and mycorrhizal status were estimated. As a rule seedlings 1/0 obtained high doses of fertilizers, and their needle nitrogen concentration highly exceeded the recommended optimal level above which mycorrhiza formation is greatly restricted. Highly negative correlation was found between the nitrogen status of foliage and mycorrhizal quantitative and qualitative colonisation estimated in the abundance class of 0-5. When internal nitrogen level was low, several ectomycorrhizal morphotypes were found on roots of tested plants. Excessive nitrogen fertilization decreased root ramification pattern and along with increased pH promoted ectendomycorrhizal symbiosis. Two-year-old seedlings (2/0) were characterised by significantly lower nitrogen concentration in the needles which resulted in much higher ectomycorrhizal colonisation. Ectendomycorrhizal symbiosis in the case of 2/0 seedlings was scarce. The results indicate that natural colonisation in nurseries is dependent on the soil management practices, especially nitrogen fertilization. Optimalization of nitrogen fertilization may intensify ectomycorrhizal colonisation of the nursery stock from indigenous fungal species and improve the growth of Scots pine seedlings in bare-root nurseries and plantations.

Opis:
Forest management profitability can be raised by increasing stand productivity, which comprises improving wood yields and quality. The United States of America provides a good example of intensive management techniques applied on large scale to substantially increase forest productivity. Experiences of the U.S. South's forestry sector provide evidence that research−based intensive growth technologies are the key factor in ensuring adequate wood supplies and in effectively promoting sustainable management of the region's forest resource. Management treatments such as applications of fertilizers and herbicides have yielded lard productivity increases to date. Genetic improvement also has yielded large productivity increases along with improving stem straightness, wood properties, and disease resistance. Modern timber growth technologies already make possible doubling or even tripling current pine growth rates, while research progress indicates that current growth technologies can be improved even further.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of pruning the root system and different doses of nitrogen fertilization on the height and root collar diameter of 2-year-old beech seedlings (Fagus sylvatica L.). This research was conducted in the forest nursery Muchów (Jawor Forest District, regional directorate of State Forests in Wrocław) and two different pruning treatments (no pruning and at 12 cm depth) and nitrogen fertilization doses (25 and 50 kg×ha-1) were applied. Results from an ANOVA showed statistically significant differences between the two pruning treatments (p=0.000) as well as for the interaction of both treatment factors (p=0.019). Root collar diameter correlated with seedling height, both of which were significantly different for the two pruning treatments (p=0.000). No statistically significant impact by the nitrogen fertilization doses on seedling height could be observed (p=0.125). To conclude, we found that it is reasonable to reduce the doses of nitrogen fertilization to half the recommended amount, 25 kg×ha-1, if the root system is not pruned during the second growth year. Seedlings that do receive pruning should be fertilized using the recommended nitrogen doses.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the influence of organic fertilization and mulching on the seedling vigour of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) and occurrence of soil mites (Acari) in forest- and post-arable soils. Two different nursery experiments were carried out in the vegetation period of the year 2005 on light soils at two sylvan-natural regions of Poland. The first trial was conducted at Białe Błota near Bydgoszcz – on a brown podzolic soil. The second experiment – at Lipnik near Stargard Szczeciński – on an acid brown soil. The higher was the rainfall amount during the vegetation period, the lower was the seasonal irrigation rate supplied to European larch seedlings. Because of this the seasonal irrigation water rate applied at Białe Błota was higher than that at Lipnik. European larch seedlings grown on the forest soil were characterized by the increased height and the fresh mass than those cultivated on the post-arable ground. Seedlings grown in the forest soil on treatments mulched with litter were characterized by the increased height and the fresh mass of above-ground parts as compared to those cultivated on control plots (without mulching). Mulching with litter increased the number of mites, especially oribatid mites, as well as their species diversity. It can be recognized as the result of the positive influence of the mulching on the biological properties of the studied soils.
