Opis:
Forest edges generally represent a very important element of ecological stability. The goal of this paper is to classify the types of anthropogenic forest edges in the area of Starohorské Mountains and to analyze anthropogenic impacts on the selected attributes of forest edges. We evaluated the attributes of a biocomplex, type of forest edge, its structure, consistence, species composition and other factors. The differences in environment variables and anthropic impact were influenced by singularities in the composition and species variability of vegetation. In the monitored areas we defined seven types and four subtypes of forest edges according to its vertical and horizontal structure. With the help of detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) we also interpreted organization relevés and species by gradients of environment variables, and with the help of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) we tested their statistical significance. From the results of our research, there is a clear tendency for high diversity of living species in the forest edge. Environmental variables interpreting the highest volume of species variability are the altitude and transect position.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to estimate the edge effect on the species richness in agriculturally maintained forest-grassland boundaries of coniferous forest and to determine how species respond to a forest edge. We hypothesised that species number, cover of herbs and mosses is higher in the edge, and species penetrates from nearby grasslands into forest interior. The study was conducted in the Southwestern Lithuania. The edge effect on overall herbaceous species composition of coniferous forests was evaluated by Canonical Correspondence Analysis. The species richness of herbs and mosses in the coniferous forest was highest in the forest edge and declined towards interior. The highest decrease in the number of species occurred within 0 to 5 m to the edge. The highest cover of herbs and mosses was in the forest edge and decreased towards the forest interior. CCA biplot showed a good correlation of overall species composition and the distance to the forest edge. Distribution of species along edge to interior gradient depended on the species response to different ecological factors. Ellenberg value of light was higher in the edge. Ellenberg value of nitrogen was higher in the forest interior.

Opis:
The functioning of plant associations, including forest associations, in the coastal cliff edge zone of the Pomeranian Bay in the Wolin National Park (WNP) is determined by short-term factors related to the dynamics of erosion and denudation processes and long-term phytoclimatic conditions’ changes. The study presents a temporary analysis of the occurrence of sea abrasion and water and aeolian erosion, based on the applied hydrometeorological threshold values. The influence of changes in phytoclimatic conditions on the development and productivity of coastal forests with the dominant species of Fagus sylvatica was also presented. Assessments of spatial susceptibility to erosion of the cliff coast and the existing plant associations were also carried out in conditions of the risk of coast erosion. It was found that 55% of the cliff edge zone of the Pomeranian Bay of the WNP and the forest associations (mainly Luzulo pilosae-Fagetum) occurring there are in the zone of particular risk of increased erosion and denudation processes. In addition, unfavourable trends in changes in phytoclimatic conditions in the 21st century were found, which reflect climate changes unfavourable to the development of beech forests on Wolin Island.

Opis:
The distribution of Trollius europaeus in the northern part of the Południowopodlaska Lowland was described and a phytosociological study made of the localities where it was present between 2010 and 2012. The condition of all sites where T. europaeus was historically present was also verified. These field studies reveal that the number of sites of occurrence and the abundance of T. europaeus populations have rapidly diminished over recent years. Only 15 populations of the species in the vicinity of 7 sites were confirmed. Trollius europaeus is usually considered a species characteristic of moist meadows of ordo Molinietalia and in the plant community type, Polygono bistortae-Trollietum. In the northern part of the Po³udniowopodlaska Lowland, no meadow sites containing Trollius europaeus still remain according to our survey. All the confirmed stands are situated in deciduous forests of class Querco-Fagetea (Tilio-Carpinetum and Potentillo albae-Quercetum) and moist forest edge communities of ordo Glechometalia. The disappearance of all meadow populations is mainly considered a result of intensification of the agricultural use of these habitats. We suggest that the category of threat to Trollius europaeus is increased on the regional list from VU to EN, and consolidated with further monitoring and active protection of stands where it is present.

Opis:
This paper presents the edge effect of a very low-volume road on the belt of roadside vegetation in the “Puszcza Notecka”, Poland - one of the largest compact forest complexes in Europe. The observations were carried out in the vicinity of pine stands in the fresh coniferous forest and fresh mixed coniferous forest sites. Twelve rectangular experimental sites 30 and 50 meters wide at a distance of 0 to 10 meters from the edge surfaces were established. 75 species characteristic for the 13 phytosociological classes and 20 species associated devoided of the diagnostic value were recognized in the roadside area. Native species dominated, where the most numerous species belonged to meadow communities (Molinio-Arrhenatheretea) and ruderal (Artemisietea vulgaris). Despite the significant participation of synanthropic plants, there was no invasion of alien species.

Opis:
The development of the transportation network brings both benefits and threats. Much attention is paid to soil contamination with trace elements, difficulties in animal migration, noise propagation or synanthropisation of the vegetation cover. This paper deals with the effect of provincial road No. 150 on inventory characteristics of neighboring Scots pine stands in the Notecka Forest (western Poland) – one of the larger forest complexes in Europe. Twelve rectangular experimental sites were established perpendicular to the road axis, called belt transects. Each transect consisted of 3−4 plots located at different distances from the pavement edge (fig.). Measurements and estimations were recorded for the plots. Values from all belt transects were approximated within plots at the same distance from the road and then compared using statistical methods. Observations were conducted in Scots pine stands growing on fresh coniferous forest (Bśw) and fresh mixed coniferous forest (BMśw) sites. Reduced stand density that resulted in decreased basal area, volume and growth rates were observed in the immediate vicinity of the road compared to the forest interior. Individual trees were thicker, but more often burdened with defects decreasing timber value. Any considerable effect of the road on tree height wasn't observed. The above mentioned changes were more evident in poorer habitat conditions, while the location in relation to the road had no significant effect. Modified lighting conditions are probably the main cause of these changes. At the edge of Scots pine stands in the Notecka Forest, a unique ecotone has formed under the influence of the provincial road.

Opis:
The influence of the edge effect on the meadow vegetation pattern was studied in the forest glades in the central part of the Middle Sudety Mts. (SW Poland). The spectacular edge effect is seen in the range of 4 m from the forest border towards the center of the glades. Within that belt we observed decrease in tree and bush species number, increase in share of graminoids and Fabaceae species, as well as increase in share of species generally related to grassland communities. A significant increase in species number and values of Shannon−Wiener diversity index was noticed within the distance of eight meters from the edges of glades.

Opis:
The study presents the Geographic Information System created to analyse spatial distribution of wind-induced damages in forest stands of the Tuchola Forest, northern Poland, and in the vicinity of Toruń. It was used in several forest complexes mainly on the territory of the following Forest Districts in the Tuchola Forest: Woziwoda, Przymuszewo and Czersk, as well as in the Bory Tucholskie National Park. The following Forest Districts were analyzed in the vicinity of Toruń: Gniewkowo, Golub-Dobrzyń, Dobrzejewice and Toruń. The damages in Tuchola Forest were caused mainly by hurricanes in 26th of December 1999 and 22nd of June 2000. The dates of hurricanes caused the largest damages in the vicinity of Toruń were 17th of July 2001 and 28th of October 2002.
