Opis:
Characteristic features of European woodland include both a reduction in natural forest areas and an increase in former agricultural areas occupied by secondary woodland. The management of these areas is challenging in terms of nature conservation, agricultural and forestry management and policy. The aim of our study was to reconstruct the history and to document the current tree stand structure for a secondary oak-beech woodland in Hungary. Towards the end of the 1800s, this area which was once almost completely occupied by a continuous forest, had been transformed into a wood-pasture. As a result of its gradual abandonment, the closed forest stand of the pasture increased from 10 to 52% between 1963 and 2005. The most characteristic feature of this woodland is the abundance of large trees. Globally, the number of large and ancient trees is rapidly diminishing. Therefore preserving and maintaining such areas, where large trees could live, is an essential management task.

Opis:
The calamity windstorm in November 2004 caused dramatic changes of land cover in the Tatra Mountains. The bora have destroyed then more than 12,000 ha of forest and principally affected the habitat structure in the Tatra National Park. The aim of this contribution is to quantify changes in forest fragmentation in 2000 and 2006. We present forest fragmentation maps related to the years 2000 and 2006. The CORINE Land Cover data layers CLC 2000 and CLC 2006 converted to raster format were used as the input data in the process of forest fragmentation assessment. Forest pixels were classified according to fragmentation indices measured within the surrounding landscape as the forest core, forest patch, forest edge, and perforated forest. Decrease of the compact forest areas (forest core) by about 9% was recorded. On the other side, increased percentage of disrupted forest areas was observed. Decrease of the area of the CLC forest classes (classes 311, 312 and 313) on land cover maps from 2000 and 2006 was connected with an increased number of transitional woodland/shrubs polygons (CLC class 324). These results suggest a temporary fragmentation with possible forest regeneration. On the other hand, forest destruction in the National Park facilitated the development of travel and tourism (new hotels, ski parks, etc.). An increased number of construction sites (CLC class 133) indicate that an urban sprawl associated with a permanent forest fragmentation can be also expected in the future.

Opis:
Vietnam is an Asian country with hot and humid tropical climate throughout the year. Forests account for more than 40% of the total land area and have a very rich and diverse vegetation. Monitoring the changes in the vegetation cover is obviously important yet challenging, considering such large varying areas and climatic conditions. A traditional remote sensing technique to monitor the vegetation cover involves the use of optical satellite images. However, in presence of the cloud cover, the analyses done using optical satellite image are not reliable. In such a scenario, radar images are a useful alternative due to the ability of radar pulses in penetrating through the clouds, regardless of day or night. In this study, we have used multi temporal C band satellite images to monitor vegetation cover changes for an area in Dau Tieng and Ben Cat districts of Binh Duong province, Mekong Delta, Vietnam. With a collection of 46 images between March 2015 and February 2017, the changes of five land cover types including vegetation loss and replanting in 2017 were analyzed by selecting two cases, using 9 images in the dry season of 3 years 2015, 2016 and 2017 and using all of 46 images to conduct Random Forest classifier with 100, 200, 300 and 500 trees respectively. The result in which the model with nine images and 300 trees gave the best accuracy with an overall accuracy of 98.4% and a Kappa of 0.97. The results demonstrated that using VH polarization, Sentinel-1 gives quite a good accuracy for vegetation cover change. Therefore, Sentinel-1 can also be used to generate reliable land cover maps suitable for different applications.
