New palynostratigraphical data concerning the Carboniferous sedimentary succession of SW Poland has been obtained from the Czerńczyce IG 1 borehole and the Brońsko boreholes on the northern slope of the Wolsztyn-Leszno High, where the oldest rocks were expected. The miospore assemblages recovered from the Czerńczyce IG 1 borehole allowed assignment of the interval studied to the Marsdenian (Namurian B) and Yeadonian (Namurian C). These results, supplemented with previous palynostratigraphical data, refute the existence of a stratigraphic gap between the early Namurian and Duckmantian (Westphalian B). The reinterpretation of the unpublished miospore results of Górecka et al. (2000b, 2001a) from the Carboniferous rocks from the Brońsko boreholes, also indicate that they should actually be assigned to the upper Marsdenian and Yeadonian. All analysed miospore assemblages are mixed and contain abundant reworked specimens. The results above complement previous opinions and permit a re-evaluation of the stratigraphy of the Carboniferous siliciclastic succession of SW Poland. Its sedimentation was certainly initiated in the earliest Namurian or earlier and probably lasted without long gaps until the Stephanian. The abundance and common occurence of reworked miospores indicate the age of rocks eroded during Carboniferous deposition. The lithological and palynofacial features of the late Namurian rocks from the Czerńczyce IG 1 borehole may be interpreted as a record of the shallowing of the sedimentary basin, including the possibility that some of the sedimentation occured in continental conditions. This means that the transition from the deep marine environment to shallow-water or even continental habitats likely had already taken place by the late Namurian. This suggestion, together with the tectonic deformation dated as post-Bolsovian, corresponds to the timing of the deposition and deformation in the German part of the Variscan Foreland Basin.

The cave of Smocza Jama located in the centre of Kraków is developed in the Wawel Horst built of Upper Jurassic limestone and surrounded by grabens with Miocene clays. The cave is composed of two series: the old one has been known for ages and the new one was discovered when an artificial shaft was mined in 1974. The new series comprises small chambers separated by intervening thin walls while the old series consists of three connected together spatial chambers. The cave abounds in extensively developed solution cavities – cupolas and ceiling pockets. The internal fine-grained deposits, predominantly representing clay fraction are built of illite, mixed layer illite-smectite, kaolinite and iron oxides. They are probably the residuum after dissolution of Jurassic limestone. The cave originated in phreatic condition due to water input from below. The new series represents juvenile stage of cave evolution. The water rose through fissure-rifts located in chamber bottoms, circulated convectionally within particular chambers, finally led to bleaching of intervening walls, and hence to connection of the neighbouring chambers. The evolution of the old series is far more advanced. The rounded solution cavities imply that the cave was formed by water of elevated temperature. The lack of coarse-grained fluvial deposits, Pleistocene mammal remains and Palaeolithic artefacts prove that the cave was isolated since its inception till Holocene time. The cave originated due to artesian circulation, when the Wawel Horst was covered by imper- meable Miocene clays. A foreland basin with carbonate basement, filled with fine-grained molasse-type deposits seems to be particularly favourable for the development of artesian caves.

Global warming observed nowadays causes an increase in geomorphic activity in polar regions. Within the areas influenced by cold climatic conditions, relief dynamics and vegetation development are the main landscape shaping processes. The study is limited to the Ebba Valley (78°43’N; 16°37’E) in central Spitsbergen (Svalbard), where geomorphologic observations and vegetation sampling were conducted in 2007. The valley was divided into three zones differentiated by dominating geomorphic activity and stability of deposits. The settlement and the evolution of plant cover have been documented there. The main factors that control well developed vegetation cover within raised marine terraces are frost heave and solifluction. In deeper parts of the valley, aeolian processes dominate and high differentiation of microsite conditions causes high variability in plant coverage. The area close to the Ebba glacier marginal zone is characterized by initial stages of plant colonisation where disturbance to vegetation is mainly caused by hydrological processes.

Large exposure near the brick-field in Halie represents one of the most complete loess sequences in the Ukrainian Car- sq pathian F orcland, which i I lustrates a progress of events covering a considerable part of the Middle Pleistocene and the whole Upper Pleistocene. The most important of these arc: the Luck soil corresponding to the soil from the Zbójno lnicrglacial in Polish profiles and Dornnitz Interglacial (1~0 stage 9) in West European profiles, bottom part of the Upper Pleistocene (Dnieper= Odranian = Saalian I) loesses, which arc extremely thick and stratigraphically divided into units of lower rank. and well developed soil complexes - Korshov and Horok hov. Investigations of the Korshov soil arc a basis to discuss at least two stages/phases ofpedogcncsis development during the last but one interglacial (Lublinian = Trcenian: 1~0 stage 7). The Horokhov paleosol is connected with the Ecmian Interglacial. The Dubno and Rovno soils occur within the poorly developed Vistulian loesses: the Rovno soil is a cultural layer.

The Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the Polish Platform reflects repeated changes in loading conditions at the Alpine–Carpathian and Arctic–North Atlantic margins of the European continent. After the Late Creta ceous–Paleocene main phase of the Mid-Polish Basinin - version, a second phase of limited uplift of the Mid-Polish Swell occurred during the Middle–Late Eocene. End Eocene and Early Oligocene subsidence of narrow grabens on the Fore-Sudetic Monocline was coeval with normal faulting in the East Alpine foredeep basin and the development of the Central European rift system. At the same time the Outer Carpathian flysch basins were rearranged, presumably in response to the build-up of compressional stresses at crustal levels, whilst subsidence and erosion patterns changed in the Carpathian Foreland from being dominated by the NW–SE trending Mid-Polish Swell to being controlled by the development of the W–E trending Meta-Carpathian Swell. At the end of the Oligocene the Fore-Sudetic graben system propagated into the area of the Trans-European Suture Zone and the Sudetes and remained active during the Early and Middle Miocene. This was paralleled by intensified subduction activity and thrusting of the Carpathians and the development of their flexural foredeep basin. A short early Sarmatian episode of basement in volving transpression along the SW margin of the Mid-Polish Swell correlates with the termination of north-directed nappe transport in the Outer Carpathians. This was followed by eastward migration of the subsidence centre of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin and the gradual termination of tectonic activity in the grabens of the Polish Lowlands. After a period of post-orogenic relaxation the present-day compressional stress regime built up during the Pliocene and Quaternary. Intensified ridge push forces exerted on the Arctic–North Atlantic passive margins contribute to this compressional stress field that is dominated by collision-related stresses reflecting continued indentation of the Adriatic Block. This sequence of events is interpreted in terms of changing tectonic loads in the Carpathians, Alps and at the NW passive margin of Europe. The complex and diachronous interaction of mechanically coupled and uncoupled plates along collision zones probably underlies the temporally varying response of the Carpathian Foreland that in addition was complicated by the heterogeneous structure of its lithosphere. Progressively increasing ridge push on the passive margin played a secondary role in the stress differentiation of the study area.

We provide improved constraints on the timing, geometry and kinematics of the fault that may control the northern submerged morpho-structural relief termed Monte Giove, offshore from the town of Polignano a Mare. We have integrated onshore and offshore data, and interpreted seismic profiles from the ViDEPI project pertaining to the offshore Adriatic Sea of the Murge area, and made field observations north of Polignano a Mare. The fault has been surveyed onshore and mainly offshore along a distance of ~25 km. Generally striking E–W, it dips at high angle to the NNE in the west and to the N in the east. Active since at least the Cretaceous, this was reactivated after the Early Pleistocene with dextral oblique-slip kinematics. It borders the Monte Giove submerged relief/structural high, and continues eastwards in the Adriatic Sea into the Northern Deformation Zone/”Murge basse” graben, that in turn affected the onshore Murge area. Fault reactivation may have been related to a strain field in the outer part of the gentle buckle fold that involved the continental lithosphere of the Apulian Foreland (i.e., the areas of the Murge onshore and the Adriatic Sea offshore) since the Middle Pleistocene, as roll-back of the subducting lithosphere halted. Besides its tectonic reactivation, this fault has important implications as regards local seismic hazard, as well as the morphology influencing the present-day bioherm.

The glaciomarginal zone in front of the Opava Mountains (Eastern Sudetes) shows complex relief. This relief resulted during the Pleistocene in glaciomarginal sedimentation that differed from sedimentation in lowlands. Sedimentological analysis was carried out on deposits of the Odranian Glaciation, when the Scandinavian ice sheet reached its maximum extent in the Eastern Sudetes fore land. Three sites in the foreland of the Opava Mountains, situated in the upper reaches of the Troja River valley, were examined. It appears that the sedimentation was controlled primarily by the relief of the substratum, and changed with the position of the ice front. Glaciomarginal fans of different size formed in the Troja River valley, which was parallel to the ice sheet front. They passed distally into the valley outwash plain, the formation of which was also influenced by mountain rivers, the role of which though changed with time. Occasionally, water flowed from ice-dammed lakes in neighbour ing valleys into the Troja River valley.

Sixty six ichnotaxa have been recognized in Barremian-Lutetian deep-marine deposits of the Sinop- Boyabat Basin, north-central Turkey, which evolved from a backarc rift into a retroarc foreland, with two episodes of major shallowing. The blackish-grey shales of the Çađlayan Fm (Barremian-Cenomanian) contain low- diversity traces fossils of mobile sediment feeders influenced by low oxygenation. One of the oldest occurrences of Scolicia indicates early adaptation to burrowing in organic-rich mud. The "normal" flysch of the Coniacian- Campanian Yemişliçay Fm bears a low-diversity Nereites ichnofacies influenced by volcanic activity. The Maastrichtian-Late Palaeocene carbonate flysch of the Akveren Fm contains a Nereites ichnofacies of moderate diversity, which is impoverished in the uppermost part, where tempestites indicate marked shallowing. The overlying variegated muddy flysch of the Atbaşý Fm (latest Palaeocene-earliest Eocene) bears an impoverished Nereites ichnofacies, which is attributed to oligotrophy and reduced preservation potential. The sand-rich silici-clastic flysch of the Kusuri Fm (Early-Middle Eocene) bears a high-diversity Nereites ichnofacies, except for the topmost part, where tempestites and littoral bioclastic limestone reflect rapid shallowing due to the tectonic closure of the basin. The turbiditic channel-fill and proximal lobe facies show a reduced trace-fossil diversity, but abundant Ophiomorpha , which is typical of the Ophiomorpha rudis sub-ichnofacies of the Nereites ichnofacies. The high abundance of Ophiomorpha in the Kusuri Fm and its low abundance in the Akveren Fm are related to plant detritus supply. The Kusuri turbiditic system was fed by a large delta, supplying rich plant detritus, whereas the Akveren system was fed by a carbonate ramp that supplied little or no such material. The extension of the Nereites ichnofacies into the tempestite-bearing neritic deposits at the top of both the Akveren and Kusuri formations indicates the capacity of the deep-water ichnofauna to survive in a rapidly-shoaling restricted basin. Only the topmost shoreface sandstones of the Akveren Fm show sporadic Ophiomorpha ? nodosa, a typical shallow-marine trace fossil.

The Polish part of the Central European Variscan foreland includes several regional units that differ in crustal structure and are characteried by distinct Devonian to Carboniferous subsidence and depositional histories. These units responded differently to palaeostress changes along the south ernmargin of the Old Red Continent. During the Devonian to Namurian A, areas located to the south-west of the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone (TTZ), including the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Małopolska and Łysogóry-Radom blocks, were influ nced by stress fields similar to those in the west ward adjacent Rheno-Hercynian Zone, whilst the Lublin Basin, located to the north-east of the TTZ, shows a similar development to the Pripyat-Dniepr-Donets rift system. After the Namurian A, the entire southern Pol ish foreland started to respond in a more consistent way to the build-up of synorogenic compressional stresses, implying a more uniform development of the stress field. During the Namurian B to early Westphalian D, the Polish foreland was dominated by north-directed compressional stresses emanating from the Southeastern Variscan Belt. During the late Westphalian and early Stephanian, the entire foreland under went compressional deformation and concomitant basin in version under the influence of stresses propagating from the Moravian-Silesian Foldand-Thrust Belt. In the Polish foreland, the development of Devonian-Carbon if erous basins, as well as the architecture of Variscan structures, clearly reflect the reactivation of preexisting crustal discontinuities, including specifically the TTZ, but also other major geophysically defined crustal bound aries. In general, thick-skinned tectonics controlled by the inherited structural grain of the basement prevailed, whereas structural decoup ling, resulting in the development of minor thrusts and reverse faulting, was of local significance only. The distinct structural-depositional development of the Pomerania region reflects its distal location with respect to the evolving orogen. Orogenic compression influenced this area only indirectly, with the TTZ acting as a guide for the transmission of transtensional and transpressional stresses.

The studied corals have been collected from cores of boreholes located in the central part of the Polish Carpathian Foreland in the Dąbrowa Tarnowska–Szczucin area. The Jurassic complex in this area presents a continuous stratigraphic section from the Upper Callovian to Tithonian, locally passing to the Lower Cretaceous (Berriasian). Its thickness exceeds 1,100 m in this area. This complex is composed of marine, mainly shallow-water deposits. The corals occur within the upper part of the Upper Jurassic (Tithonian) deposits, almost entirely within the Swarzów Limestone Formation (= coral-algal limestone formation). This occurrence marks the northernmost extent of Tithonian shallow-water corals in Poland and one of the northernmost in Europe. 42 coral species (among them 14 in open nomenclature) were identified in deposits of this formation. They include two new species: Complexastrea magna and Complexastrea dabroviensis. All taxa, except one, belong to the order Scleractinia. The described assemblage displays a Late Jurassic character. The broader stratigraphic span is assigned to some species, which are quoted from the Middle Jurassic and some species lasted until the Early Cretaceous, Berriasian and/or Valanginian.

Middle Miocene siltstones of the Skawina Formation that crop out at Wiślica, within the axial part of the Carpathian Foredeep in Poland, were analysed. The deposits studied contain numerous benthic and planktonic foraminifera, ostracods, echinoid spines, bryozoans, bivalves and otoliths. The fossils recognised document an early ‘Badenian’ (= Langhian in the Mediterranean area), or, more precisely, ‘Moravian’ age of the deposit. Palaeoecological analysis suggests normal-marine conditions with full salinity. The studied siltstones were deposited from middle–lower shoreface to lower–offshore, warm surface water and locally suboxic to dysoxic conditions in the sediment.

The only previous U-Pb zircon date for the the Early Carboniferous flysch sequence of the Moravo-Silesian Paleozoic Basin was published in 1987 from tuffogenic material from Kobylí Quarry at Krásné Loučky near the town of Krnov (Silesia, Czech Republic). The measured age of 319 Ma did not agree with its stratigraphic position, and was used as the basis for a hypothesized block of Late Carboniferous paralic molasse incorporated during a later tectonic event. During a survey of the still active quarry in 2010, volcaniclastic horizons were identified and sampled. Direct correspondence of the tuff units to those sampled in 1987 cannot be proved but is likely. High precision chemical abrasion - thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-TIMS) U-Pb dating of zircon from this new material has yielded an age of 340.05 ± 0.22 Ma, which correlates to the previously inferred stratigraphic age of the locality and the current calibration of the Early Carboniferous geologic time scale. The newly established age corresponds to the Visean stage and dates the boundary between the Horní Benešov and Moravice formations that can be correlated with other foredeep basins of the Culm in the European Variscides. A population of detrital Cambro-Ordovician zircons and a single 2.0 Ga old zircon crystal from the same volcaniclastic layer dated by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) are consistent with the known age of source material in the Variscan orogenic front.

An earlier concept of the Variscan foreland in Poland (Narkiewicz, 2007) is reconsidered in the light of new stratigraphic, tectonic and geophysical evidence, providing new data on Devonian sedimentation, Carboniferous magmatism and the deep crustal structure of SE Poland. Regional comparisons with the tectonic evolution of Central Europe and the Black Sea region show that the subsidence pattern in the foreland was controlled by alternating phases of accelerated convergence and tectonic standstill along the southern margin of Euramerica. In particular, the Bretonian (Devonian/Carboniferous) compressional deformation resulted from intensified orogenic convergence in the West-Central European Variscides leading to closure of the Saxo-Thuringian Basin and East-Sudetic back-arc basin. Another turning point in the regional tectonosedimentary development around the Mississippian-Pennsylvanian boundary was probably related to the termination of terrane collision in the Black Sea region. Late Pennsylvanian basin inversion was associated with a roughly N-S tectonic shortening. This was partly due to displacement along pre-existing basement discontinuities comprising reactivated Caledonian sutures that also pre-determined the Devonian-Carboniferous basin boundaries. Consequently, deeply-rooted tectonic zones, including the Kraków-Lubliniec and Holy Cross faults and the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone, focussed maximum compressional and transpressional deformation and associated uplift. Such a concept of terminal Variscan tectonism, termed here the “decoupled model”, is discussed with reference to the recently proposed “coupled model”. The latter assumes a wide extent of the Variscan Orogen, reaching as far as the marginal Radom-Kraśnik Fold-and-Thrust Belt linked with the Bohemian Massif through a major basal detachment. It is concluded that the “decoupled model” is more consistent with the documented seismic and structural evidence as well as with the present knowledge of the heterogeneous pre-Devonian basement in southern Poland.

Opis:
The Ludlovian greywackes of the Holy Cross Mountains (HCM) represent a part of the sedimentary cover of the Łysogóry and Małopolska terranes located in the Trans-European Suture Zone, central Poland. The rocks form the sedimentary infill of the Caledonian foreland basin that developed at the Tornquist margin of Laurussia and had source-areas located on the orogen side of the basin. Until the present, the source terrane of the basin has not been identified in its potential location – at the south-west margin of the East European Platform. The Ludlovian greywackes of both parts of the HCM show a lot of similarities in clast spectrum, timing, and geochemical features, which implies similar sources of the clastic material. The petrographic modal composition and geochemical features indicate recycled orogen signatures with a distinct undissected, evolved magmatic arc component. The latter is particularly evident from the extraclast spectrum that contains andesite, trachyte and dacite clasts. Beside the volcanic rocks, the source area consisted of sedimentary and metasedimentary rocks with high amounts of cherts. The geochemical and petrological features in the rock succession point to an evolution of the tectonic setting from an active to a more passive margin type indicating synorogenic formation of the studied rocks. Based on the rock record, we suggest that the Upper Silurian greywackes originated as a result of the collision of the Tornquist margin of Laurussia with a volcanic arc (here: the Teisseyre Arc) – located probably at the easternmost extent of the Avalonian Plate. In this scenario, the arc-continent orogen was composed of an uplifted filling of the forearc basin, an accretionary prism, volcanic arc rocks, and an exhumed foreland basement - analogously to the present-day Taiwan orogen. The second key issue is the palaeogeographical relation between the Małopolska (Kielce Region) and the Łysogóry terranes in the Late Silurian. Despite the analogous grain composition and clast types, the Łysogóry Region greywackes are composed of distinctly more altered detritus, which is in accordance with the more distal character of the Łysogóry Basin. The latter is manifested, e.g., in the lack of Caledonian deformations. The present-day adjacency of both domains containing correlative greywacke formations coupled with contrasting alteration and Late Silurian transport directions parallel to the terrane boundary imply small to medium-scale (below palaeomagnetic resolution) left-lateral movements of the Małopolska and Łysogóry crustal blocks along the Holy Cross Fault in post-Silurian times.

The entrenched Odra palaeovalley, cut into the bedrock of the distal margin (forebulge basal unconformity) of the Moravian Carpathian Foredeep (peripheral foreland basin) is filled with an almost 300 m thick pile of Miocene deposits. The directon of the valley (NW-SE to NNW-SSE) has been controlled by faults subparallel with the system of “sudetic faults“. The sedimentary succession consists of 5 facies associations/depositional environments, which are interpreted (from bottom to top, i.e. from the oldest to the youngest) as: 1 - colluvial deposits to deposits of alluvial fan, 2 - deposits of alluvial fan, 3 - fan-delta deposits, 4 - shallow water delta to nearshore deposits and 5 - open marine deposits. This fining-up and deepening-up succession reveals the following: the formation of the new flexural shape of the basin; deep erosion connected with uplift and tilting of the forebulge and reactivation of the NW-SE trending basement faults; the Early/Middle Miocene sea level fall; alluvial deposition mostly driven by tectonics and morphology; forebulge flexural retreat; Middle-Miocene sea level rise; back-stepping of valley infill; marine invasion during the Early Badenian with shift of the coastline further landward of the pallaeovalley. Tectonics related to contemporary thrusting processes in the Western Carpathians are assumed to be the dominating factor of the studied deposition at the expense of eustatic sea level changes. Provenance studies have proven that the pre-Neogene basement (i.e. the Early Carboniferous clastic “Culmian facies” ofthe Moravian-Silesian Paleozoic) represents an important source for the conglomerates and sands, which volumetrically dominate in the palaeovalley infill. However, they also showed, that the deposits of the earlier Carpathian Foredeep Basin sedimentary stage (Karpatian in age?) covered the area under study and were eroded and resedimented into the palaeovalley infill.
