Opis:
Using unique survey data on direct supplier-multinational linkages in Chile, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Vietnam, this paper first evaluates how foreign investors differ from domestic producers in terms of their potential to generate positive spillovers for local suppliers. It finds that foreign firms outperform domestic producers on several indicators, but have fewer linkages with the local economy and offer less supplier assistance, resulting in offsetting effects on the spillover potential. The paper also studies the relationship between foreign investor characteristics and linkages with the local economy as well as assistance extended to local suppliers. It finds that foreign investor characteristics matter for both. Additionally, this paper examines the role of suppliers’ absorptive capacities in determining the intensity of their linkages with multinationals. The results indicate that several supplier characteristics matter, but these effects also depend on the length of the supplier relationship. Finally, the paper assesses whether assistance or requirements from the multinational influence spillovers on suppliers. The results confirm the existence of positive effects of assistance (including technical audits, joint product development, and technology licensing) on foreign direct investment spillovers, while we find no evidence for demand effects.

Opis:
A vast set of empirical evidence has been amassed over the past decade on the existence and direction of foreign direct investment (FDI)-generated horizontal and vertical spillovers. Overall, the results are mixed, and suggest that the theoretical postulated spillover effects often do not automatically materialize just because a country is able to attract FDI in the first place. As a result, more and more research has been devoted to understanding the various conditions that may explain these mixed results. Using a cross-section of more than 25,000 domestic manufacturing firms in 78 low-and middle-income countries from the World Bank’s Enterprise Surveys Indicator Database we assess how mediating factors influence productivity spillovers to domestic firms from FDI. We differentiate between three types of mediating factors: (i) a foreign investor’s spillover potential, (ii) a domestic firm’s absorptive capacity, and (iii) a country’s institutional framework. We find that all three affect the extent and direction of FDI spillovers on domestic firm productivity. Moreover, we find that the impact of mediating factors depends on domestic firms’ productivity and the structure of foreign ownership.

Opis:
This article examines the firm-level and regional determinants of inward FDI into Polish firms in the framework of sectoral analysis. All Polish companies with foreign capital (21 895 firms) were divided into three basic groups: firms of manufacturing sector (11 064 firms); services (6718) and sales (4149). This investigation includes the period from 2003 to 2012 (10 years). The main aim of this article is to determine what factors (firm-level or regional) have more impact on FDI attraction and how their impact depends on a sector which a host firm operates in. The firm-level characteristics which were used in this analysis were total assets of a host firm; its productivity; firm size; R&D expenditure; level of high-skilled workers and age of a recipient firm. The regional determinants of inward FDI into Polish firms were: the economic potential of a region in which a firm operates; the road and rail road density of this region and the location of a firm: closer to EU or non-EU countries and closer to seaside or to the capital city – Warsaw.
