Opis:
Identyfikuje 8+8 korzyści, tj. osiem głównych bezpośrednich i osiem głównych pośrednich korzyści, jakie mogą zyskać społeczności lokalne i regionalne dzięki inwestycjom firm zagranicznych. Liście korzyści towarzyszy omówienie potencjalnych strat z tytułu obecności firm zagranicznych. Zastanawiając się nad determinantami atrakcyjności jednostek samorządowych dla potencjalnych inwestorów zagranicznych autor wyróżnia dwie podstawowe grupy czynników: czynniki zależne (zmienne) i czynniki niezależne (stałe lub względnie stałe).
The subject of the paper's analysis is the investment processes carried out abroad as a sign of enterprises' becoming international companies. The author has presented the complex system of conditions of the flows of investment capital, including, apart from own internal motifs, also four additional groups of factors originating from the domestic and foreign environment. Foreign investments are treated in the paper as a phenomenon consisting of various aspects, implying specific advantages and losses for the interested towns and regions. The author proposes the 8+8 list of advantages related to foreign investments, i.e. eight direct and eight main indirect advantages. The list is accompanied by the enumeration of the most common negative consequences of the direct investments abroad. Investment attractiveness of a town (region) that is characterised by the conditions that are dependent (variable) and independent (fixed) from the kind of location, has been the subject of a thorough analysis of the paper.

Opis:
The author looks at foreign direct investment in Estonia and discusses its implications for the country’s economy. The analysis covers the 1994-2004 period and is based on a combination of analytical and descriptive methods. To obtain a more complete picture of foreign capital involvement in Estonia, which was once part of the Soviet Union, the author discusses factors that influence the country’s investment attractiveness. She concludes that Estonia’s market transformation has contributed to a major acceleration in the inflow of FDI to this country. FDI in Estonia has been characterized by a strong concentration, both in terms of the investors’ country of origin and the sectors in which they become involved, Sobańska notes. Scandinavian companies, primarily those from Sweden as well as Finland, have dominated among foreign direct investors in Estonia, while the role of investors from Central and Eastern Europe in Estonia’s overall FDI performance has been marginal. Since 1998 the financial sector has been the main focus of foreign direct investment in Estonia. Foreign investors have also contributed to the restructuring of the country’s corporate sector. The inflow of foreign capital has enabled Estonia to join the international trade system. However, despite the generally positive role of FDI in the country’s development, the strong concentration of foreign capital leads to worries about the permanence of Estonia’s economic achievements. A potential economic crisis in Scandinavia could easily lead to a situation in which FDI would bring negative market trends to Estonia’s fledgling economy.

Opis:
The paper offers a comprehensive analysis of direct investments made by Polish companies abroad. Such investments have intensified in recent years, especially since Poland joined the European Union on May 1, 2004. Foreign expansion is an important part of the development strategies of many Polish companies today. The empirical research described in the paper identifies the factors that determine direct investment by Polish companies abroad, with a special focus on barriers to such projects. The studies in question were carried out at the Foreign Trade Research Institute (IKiCHZ) in 2006 and involved two groups of businesses: those that have already invested abroad in recent years, and those that may carry out such projects in the future. The latter group comprises potential investors who stand out in the corporate sector because of their market position, financial condition and the fact that exports account for a large part of their sales. The analysis involved the following aspects of direct investment abroad: an evaluation of the financial condition of investors and their prospects for the coming years; the possible determinants and barriers to investment on foreign markets; investment plans; the financial, organizational and legal conditions involved; feasibility studies; and the expected benefits and forms of public assistance to Polish companies investing abroad. The empirical studies discussed by the authors reveal that Polish entrepreneurs are interested in direct investment abroad and see it as an opportunity for the further development of their companies. The research shows that Polish investors on foreign markets primarily include large companies that export their products and are doing well financially. Poland’s EU accession has had a positive influence on Polish companies’ direct investment abroad. Still, the authors conclude that direct investment by Polish companies on foreign markets is still in its infancy. This is confirmed by the scope and forms of these projects as well as by the considerable caution displayed by the analyzed businesses in undertaking such operations.

Opis:
The paper examines the conditions that determine the internationalization of Poland’s retail companies and other businesses, and it also evaluates the scope and forms of this process. The author analyzes these issues on the basis of desk research, or studies that collate the findings of previously published data and evaluate them in new ways. Another method used by the author is direct research involving a selected group of major enterprises that either already operate on foreign markets or plan to expand abroad. The analysis made it possible to identify the most important motives behind the internationalization of business operations as well as the directions of expansion in terms of both geographical regions and individual business sectors. Maleszyk also describes the organizational forms of internationalization (such as foreign direct investment and various forms of cooperation and integration) as well as barriers to decision-making on business expansion and development. The analysis reveals that the process of internationalization applies to a limited group of companies and is at an early stage of development. To accelerate internationalization, it is necessary to strengthen the market position of Polish enterprises and more intensely promote Polish brand-name products abroad. Other priorities include expanding the system for providing investment advice and supporting institutions that promote entrepreneurship, as well as facilitate lending from banks.

The constant pursuit of competitiveness brings about that countries consider knowledge creation and high value-added activity very welcomed. Accordingly to it, FDI in R&D as one of the sources of increase those factors are strongly desired by any host country. The aim of this paper is to show the involvement of foreign investors in R&D activity in Poland. Analysis concentrates on three problems connected each other, namely: methodological issues of technology transfer related to R&D activity; size, state of affairs and utilization of polish research potential by foreign investors and legal issues related to encouragements in R&D activities. Empirical analysis indicates that since nineties last century transnational corporations took part relatively low in the sector of R&D and only now it is changing. Analysis of expenditures on R&D, structure of governmental R&D, employment in R&D activity and submitted patent applications in Poland and in Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) mode suggest strong connections of foreign affiliates with their parents companies. However, emerging recently brand new centers for R&D and increasing employment in the already existed one suggest that the earlier situation is changing. Gathering together issues related to research potential and legal aspects facilitating R&D activity this paper concentrates thus on explanation of this problem.

Opis:
The main feature of the development of the Polish economy is increasing importance of international capital flows. In 2005 capital inflow having form of FDI was estimated at billion euros. Continual increasing of foreign enterprises having their fillies in Poland becomes a challenge for the Polish firms. Modern sectors high innovation potentiality are involved into highest international competitiveness, i.e. manufacture of motor vehicles, manufacture of electronic equipment, manufacture of pharmaceutical products). Now foreign investors explore other sectors earlier recognising as local. Appearance of new strong players like international corporations on the local markets (sectors) tends to competitiveness increase of resources and abilities of the Polish enterprises (technological, marketing, management and production abilities) and requires increasing of their internationalisation rate.

State strategies in Central Europe have converged towards a distinctive form of the competition state. This article explains the moment of convergence and identifies the political support of the competition state by making three principal points. First, the internally oriented strategies were exhausted by the end of the nineties. Second, it took some time until the foreign investors became really active in the region. Third, the processes of state internationalization worked only when the structural opportunities and political possibilities of themoment allowed domestic groups linked to transnational capital-the comprador service sector-to come to the fore and translate the structural power of transnational capital into tactical forms of power within national social formations.

Opis:
The paper reviews empirical studies on how various location factors influence foreign direct investment (FDI). The author focuses on some recent research and takes into account determinants such as market size, market growth, labor costs, labor quality, openness to trade, geographic distance, taxes, country risk, and corruption. These factors do not represent a closed set of factors that affect FDI location decisions, but are most frequently considered, Wawrzyniak says. Research theories list many factors that can influence the location of FDI. These include economic determinants (that depend on the type of FDI) as well as the policy framework for FDI and business facilitation. Moreover, these FDI determinants tend to change over time, Wawrzyniak says, and some of them, such as privatization of transition economies, are particularly important to some countries and regions. Empirical studies on the impact of various determinants on the location of FDI are inconclusive because different authors have reported different results. Some researchers say that a specific factor has a positive influence on FDI, while others argue the opposite. Still others believe that this particular factor is statistically insignificant. However, not all the potential determinants of FDI are equally controversial, Wawrzyniak says. The results of empirical research on different location factors show a varying level of consistency. They are generally more consistent in the case of factors such as market size and less consistent in the case of labor costs, for example.

Intra-industry trade (IIT) has been widely investigated among developed countries. Main factors influencing the simultaneous flows of exports and imports were also identified for the group of advanced economies. Less attention was paid to the trade of emerging countries. Therefore, the author analysed bilateral trade between Poland and its main trading partners over the period 2000-2007. The analysis of IIT was conducted at the five-digit SITC products. Among factors influencing intensity of IIT the role of FDI was placed in the centre of the investigation.

Celem artykułu jest propozycja wykorzystania modelu panelowego, którego inspiracją był model grawitacji, do oceny wpływu bezpośrednich inwestycji zagranicznych na międzynarodową wymianę handlową dóbr i usług w Polsce. W obliczeniach wykorzystano dane dotyczące m.in. wartości bezpośrednich inwestycji zagranicznych w Polsce oraz wartości eksportu i importu z lat 2000-2007 w wybranych sektorach produkcyjnych. Do oszacowania parametrów modelu wykorzystano estymator efektów stałych (FE) oraz estymator efektów losowych (RE). Oceny efektów stałych umożliwiły szczegółową analizę relacji między handlem zagranicznym Polski i napływem bezpośrednich inwestycji zagranicznych w ujęciu sektorowym.
The main purpose of the article is an application of the panel data model inspired by the gravitational model to investigate the influence of foreign direct investments (FDI) on foreign trade in Poland. In the research there are used data about foreign direct investment, export and import in manufacturing industries in 2000-2007. For estimation of the gravitational model there used fixed-effect estimator and random effect estimator. Individual effect values enable a detailed analysis of the relationship between Polish foreign trade and FDI inflows by industry.

Albania as all Balkan countries in general, in the past 20 years faced with deep and continuous socio-economic change which resulted not simply in a totally newly shaped economy, but also in new and unexperienced paths of human resources developments. This referring to the qualitative, quantitative and diversification terms, brings the age of new professions and connections between the academic development and advancement and the adaption with the real necessities of the labor market. Adding to this complex and mobile situation the effect on their economy of the last financial crisis, the turbulence level is expected to be increased . Practitioners and researchers must understand connections and make up different scenarios which will face with a very unpredictable environment. Not surprisingly, Albania as some other southwestern European countries, due to the low level of integration into the international financial market, their mainly domestic market for goods and services produced by them, did not suffer the same consequences as other neighboring countries. But even the effect of downsizing their economies will affect Albanian economy too, because the payment balance and foreign trade balance as well as due to the widening of globalization in its domestic economy, which Albania cannot afford to avoid any longer. At the same time, the country must take in consideration the economic structure change and its adoption with the EU countries economic structure. These two main challenges can be afforded with substantial foreign investments and the most attractive resource has proved to be the human one. Sustainable development of human resources for a national sustainable development, requires making pro-active decision regarding their development and planning. The welfare of countries more and more is not being measured by the GDP pro capita, instead it is being used the term” life quality” which calls for decision making process aiming to increase and not simply exploit, which pro-actively develops qualitative human resources . This because a major factor for development is direct foreign investment. This drives Albania as well as other Balkan countries shift from naturally gifted with human resources due to the high nativity toward having attractive human resources in terms of quality and diversity related to actual and future trends of economy structuring and development. The paper deals with issues related to economic and human development by comparing two major factors in the case of Albania: the quality of human resources, role of foreign investments in the Albanian economic development and effects of human resources have on them and the careful planning of human resources development driven by actual and future trends of economic development. At the same time, the paper analyses the necessity to link the didactic offer of universities and high schools and market driving forces.

We are talking about a certain potential of economies in the sphere of attracting and next supporting foreign direct investments. The possibility of finding a foreign investor plays a significant role especially in the case of those countries whose capital supplies are insufficient. And Ukraine may be considered such a country. The aim of the article is to examine the problem of investment attractiveness of Ukraine – to define the factors that stimulate and de-stimulate the influx of foreign direct investments to this country. In the first part of the article, treated as an introduction, the current data concerning foreign direct investments in Ukraine are presented, and the second one reviews international rankings that concern the question of investment attractiveness, defining the position of Ukraine in the international arena.

In recent years, the internationalisation of firm activities has been a significant trend in the agribusiness sector. To a great degree, this development has been fuelled by trade liberalisations and the EU enlargement, but also by the strong economic growth in many transforming and developing economies. Against this background, this paper identifies the strategies and instruments that agribusiness companies currently use when internationalising their business. The paper presents the empirical results of a survey that was undertaken between April and August 2010 with the participation of 113 German agribusiness firms. The majority of respondents expect that the globalisation of agricultural markets will increase remarkably in the future. For developing international business activities, comparatively simple strategies, such as direct and indirect exports, are most widely used. Agribusiness firms face various challenges in international markets, including problems with quality control, corruption, tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, as well as low availability of qualified workers and managers and a lack of legal security. Despite these difficulties and challenges, three-fourths of those interviewed indicated that they had either reached or exceeded the goals set for their international expansion.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) plays an extraordinary and growing role in global business. It can provide a firm with new markets and marketing channels, cheaper production facilities, access to new technology, products, skills and financing. For a host country or the foreign firm which receives the investment, it can provide a source of new technologies, capital, processes, products, organizational technologies and management skills and as such can provide a strong impetus to economic development. The sea change in trade and investment policies and the regulatory environment globally in the past decade, including trade policy and tariff liberalization, easing of restrictions on foreign investment and acquisition in many nations, and the deregulation and privatization of many industries, has probably been the most significant catalyst for FDI’s expanded role.
