    Folk perceptions of disease through the prism of Ukrainian and Polish phraseologyThe article analyzes the phraseological units of the Ukrainian and Polish languages motivated by folk perceptions of the etiology of diseases; describes ethnocultural features of the formation of the analyzed units; and reveals that in Ukrainian and Polish phraseology the idea of personification and demonic origin of diseases is highlighted by coding in the phraseological units: 1) the outward appearance of mythical creatures similar to the appearance of an afflicted person; 2) specific actions of the personified disease that lead to the deterioration of health or even death; 3) folk ways of treating illness and so on. Ludowe wyobrażenia o chorobach przez pryzmat frazeologii języka ukraińskiego i polskiegoW artykule przeanalizowano jednostki frazeologiczne języka ukraińskiego i polskiego motywowane ludowymi wyobrażeniami o etiologii chorób; opisano etnokulturową specyfikę tworzenia badanych jednostek; oraz ustalono, że we frazeologii języka ukraińskiego i polskiego wyobrażenia o personifikacjach i demonicznym pochodzeniu chorób odzwierciedlone są za sprawą kodowania w jednostkach frazeologicznych: 1) osobliwości wyglądu zewnętrznego istoty mitycznej podobnego do wyglądu zewnętrznego chorego człowieka; 2) konkretnych działań uosobionej choroby, które prowadzą do pogorszenia samopoczucia albo śmierci; 3)ludowych sposobów leczenia choroby itd.

    Opis:
    The article deals with the graphic design of the “Ukrainian Calendar” – an annual publication that was issued by the Ukrainian community in Poland in the period 1957–1988. Different communication and stylistic constructions were designed to represent national identity in a number of ways. Folk art patterns would illustrate a rich tradition, adding a ‘peasant’ connotation at the same time. Traditional costumes from Central Ukraine, Cossack in particular, would communicate the idea of national unity. Graphic quotations from manuscripts and early printed books as well as historical forms of the Cyrillic alphabet would describe Ukraine’s great history and cultural development through the centuries. Motifs from Kyiv Rus and Cossack art would remind viewers of the tradition of state-building. Concerning the overall style of the publication, there were symmetrically balanced and pattern-decorated layouts as well as the dynamic positioning of stylized elements. Several issues of the Calendar demonstrate attempts to modernize the national image. With ‘op-art’, ‘pop-art’ and ‘international style’ designs they shape Ukrainian identity as being contemporary and global. Generally, the publication illustrates the tensions between the traditional and modern; it is also a ‘hybrid’ between Diaspora and Soviet periodicals of the time.

    The paper presents the realizations of the theme of concentration camps in folk art, i.e. the sculptures made by Władysław Chajec, Zygmunt Skrętowicz, Franciszek Skocz, and Jan Staszak. Chajec and Staszak tried to present the most drastic moments in the history of the Nazi death factories. These sculptors drew inspiration from the popular iconography of the Holocaust, i.e. pictures showing the liberation of the camps. Skocz carved a cycle of figures that represent members of the SS and prisoners who are doing labor and who are being subjected to punishment, whereas Staszak decided to create his works by using wood from the trees growing on the borders of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, thus treating these plants as witnesses of suffering. This article presents the aforementioned works against the background of the crisis of representation, which permeates culture after the Holocaust.
