    The article highlights research findings of the ballad plots from the folklore repertoire of Volyn and Western Polissia of the end of the 19th century revealed in the records of Lesya Ukrainka and her family members (Mykhailo and Olha Kosach, Olena Pchilka) and also known in close Polish analogues of those days. The ballads, recorded by the Kosachs, are dominated by stories of family relationships and conflicts caused by marriage without love, long-term separation (the topic of incest), and the mother’s interference in a marital relationship that leads to murder, poisoning, and other tragic situations. A comparative analysis of ballad variants in two languages allows identifying not only the geographical area of spreading of ballad plots in the folklore of neighbouring nations, the specifics of plots, motifs, images, but also points to the features of the Ukrainian and Polish folklore works interaction on the borderlands. In the ballads, belonging to the International Ballad Fund, the plot-lines about wanderings of a dishonoured girl, the incest-related topics, mother’s poisoning of her daughter-in-law and son, about the death of a servant because of his/her mistress’ caprices, the wife’s murder of her husband are typical and similar to various languages. Ukrainian and Polish versions of the ballad-songs have similar features in the structural components of the lyrics, describing mostly life tragic collisions, everyday situations, dialogues of the characters, and artistic details. Despite the affi nity of plots, images, artistic means of expression, multilingual texts off er diff erent, oft en radically diff erent ways of resolving personal and family confl icts. In addition, they are oft en marked with national colouration and refl ect the features of local life, the social life realities of the Ukrainians, Poles, and other ethnic groups. Th e study has revealed that national attribution of the characters, their specifi c national names (especially in the Polish texts), polarization on the principle of ours/a stranger, a native/foreigner are the most noticeable features. Th e Ukrainian and Polish plots express mental ethnic stereotypes of folklore carriers, in particular, regarding women’s role in family and society.

    Opis:
    Głównym celem artykułu jest przedstawienie różnych sposobów funkcjonowania pieśni ludowych (głównie pieśni słowiańszczyzny) w polskiej pieśni artystycznej od momentu jej powstania (uznając za ojców pieśni polskiej S. Moniuszkę i F. Chopina), poprzez II połowę wieku XIX, do początków wieku XX (M. Karłowicz, K. Szymanowski). Okres ten wybrany został ze względu na popularność gatunku pieśniowego w twórczości wielu kompozytorów omawianego czasu. Do gatunków, które miały istotny wpływ na kształtowanie się polskiej pieśni artystycznej, należą: śpiewy historyczne, zwane dumami, dumy kozacze, które jednak miały tylko pośredni wpływ na pieśni polskie (głównie chodzi o tematykę, a nie o cechy strukturalne), pieśni ludowe, pieśni zwane dumkami oraz ballady ludowe. Folklor z natury rzeczy łączy kulturowo tereny ze sobą sąsiadujące lub ze sobą związane w jakikolwiek inny sposób. Dzięki tym powiązaniom w polskiej pieśni artystycznej odnajdujemy motywy, wątki, tematy, zapożyczenia i cytaty wywodzące się z bliskich nam ośrodków słowiańskich, nie zapominając o znaczących inspiracjach folklorem Litwy, która uległa – w pewnym okresie swej historii i na określonych terenach – zjawisku slawizacji. W podsumowaniu autorka wskazuje podstawowe cechy pieśni artystycznych w kontekście ich związków z folklorem.
    The article aims at presenting different manners in which the folk songs (mainly Slavic songs) exist within the Polish art song since its creation (as long as we recognize S. Moniuszko and F. Chopin as the fathers of the Polish song), throughout the second half of the 19th century, until the beginning of the 20th century (M. Karłowicz, K. Szymanowski). This period was chosen on account of the popularity of the song genre in the works of many composers of the time in question. The genres which had a significant influence on the formation of Polish art song include: historical songs, called duma, Cossack dumas, which however, had only an indirect influence on Polish songs (mainly in terms of subject matter, and not of structural features), folk songs, songs called dumkas, and folk ballads. Folklore by its very nature makes a cultural connection between neighbouring areas or areas that are related to one another in any other way. Owing to these links, we can find – in the Polish art song – motifs, themes, borrowings and quotations coming from Slavic centres whose culture is so similar to ours. Also we shouldn’t forget the significant inspirations from the Lithuanian folklore, that is from the country which at some point in its history and in certain regions has undergone the phenomenon of Slavisation. In the summary, the author indicates the basic features of art songs in the context of their connections with folklore.

    Nie udało się dotychczas ustalić, czy wiejska pieśń, na którą Adam Mickiewicz powołuje się w przypisie do ballady To lubię, rzeczywiście istniała. Lista bajek ludowych (opowieści wierzeniowych) rozważanych jako pokrewne jest za to dość długa. Podobieństwo pomiędzy poszczególnymi utworami oralnymi a balladą wykazywano na podstawie występowania tych samych wątków, a szczególnie motywu kary za nieczułość i odrzucanie miłości. Żadna z bajek nie okazała się jednak na tyle podobna do To lubię, by rozwiać wątpliwości badaczy, skłaniających się do wniosku, że Mickiewicz pomysł zaczerpnął z tradycji literackiej, a przypis zmistyfikował. Przyjęcie innych kryteriów podobieństwa umożliwi sięgnięcie do bardzo popularnej i rozbudowanej grupy bajkowej — dusze na pokucie. Zespół ten łączy stały schemat morfologiczny, w którym największej wariantywności podlega typ grzechu. Do grupy dołączyć powinna bajka zanotowana w Pcimiu (woj. małopolskie) w 2019 r. W wersji tej pokuta polega na straszeniu kichaniem do momentu, gdy ktoś odpowie pożyczeniem zdrowia. To lubię i bajkę z Pcimia łączy podobieństwo na tle morfologicznym — taka sama sekwencja wątków, ułożonych w identycznej kolejności, oraz zastosowanie retrospekcji. Kierunek pokrewieństwa nie jest jednak jasny. Mickiewicz pomysł na To lubię mógł zaczerpnąć z folkloru lub ballada ta już po powstaniu zbłądziła pod strzechy i na nowo zainspirowała kulturę ludową.
    It has not yet been established whether the folk song Adam Mickiewicz refers to in the footnote to the ballad „I Like It” actually existed. On the other hand, the list of related folk tales is quite long. The similarity between individual oral pieces and the ballad has already been demonstrated by pointing out common themes, especially the penance for insensitivity and rejection of love. However, none of the folk tale turns out to be similar enough to “I Like It” to dispel doubts of those researchers who think that Mickiewicz took the idea from literary tradition and faked the footnote. Other similarity criteria should be applied to enable establishing references to the very popular and extensive folk tale group – souls in penance. All tales from this group share the same morphological pattern in which the type of sin is subject to the greatest variability. The group should be joined by a folk tale recorded in Pcim in 2019. In this version, penance is about sneezing until someone replies with a God bless you. “I Like It” and the tale from Pcim share a morphological background – the same sequence of threads arranged in the same order and the use of retrospection. However, the direction of this relation is not clear. Mickiewicz’s idea for “I Like It” could have been taken from folklore, or the ballad found its way to the countryside and inspired folk culture.
