Opis:
The present paper proposes a simple model for the calculation of a time series to control the horizontal motion of the piston of a wavemaker. It is assumed that the initial conditions correspond to water at rest. It is assumed that parameters of kinematics of the fluid (displacement, velocity and acceleration fields) at the initial time are equal to zero. In the first interval the amplitudes grow to an asymptote that corresponds to a regular monochromatic wave. In the second interval the waves decay. Calculated time series were fed in to the control system of our wavemaker and the measured horizontal displacements of the piston compared. The control series was supplemented by terms corresponding to the Stokes type solution by addition of terms with multiples of the basic frequency.

Opis:
A pontoon bridge, also known as a floating bridge, can be used as for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. The buoyancy of the floating bridge limits the maximum load it can carry. This research included experimental runs to study variations of open channel flow characteristics upstream and downstream a floating bridge. Eighty one runs have been carried out using a flume in a hydraulic laboratory. The experimental run program is classified into two main categories; the first investigates the velocity ratios (vds/vus) downstream and upstream the floating bridge. The second category is concerned with the energy head losses (hL) due to the presence of a floating bridge. The experimental runs are carried out using three pontoon lengths, three flow depths, six submerged depths, and three discharges. The results are analysed and graphically presented to help predict hydraulic parameters. The outcomes have shown that the floating bridge upstream, Froude number and submergence of the pontoon are the dominant parameters that affect the studied flow characteristics.

Opis:
Theoretical analysis of the behavior of a model seabed subjected to water wave excitation is presented. The experiments were performed in the wave flume at the Danish Technological University in Lyngby. Such experiments are unique in engineering sciences and therefore provide unique empirical data for testing various models of the seabed. A controversial explanation of the experiments is presented in the literature. The goal of this research was to study pore pressure changes caused by water waves and the subsequent liquefaction of the seabed. The authors of the present contribution offer their own theoretical explanation of the wave flume experiments and discuss errors found in the literature cited. The analysis is based on the classical soil mechanics, including the Biot type approach.

Abstract: In his ground-breaking research on the sedimentary structures of turbidites, Stanisław Dżułyński demonstrated and took to new levels of accomplishment the defining attributes of the Kraków School of flysch sedimentology established by Marian Książkiewicz at the Jagiellonian University. These attributes included a meticulous approach to fieldwork, the ability to recognize the scalar and vector relationships of diverse sedi- mentary features, a working knowledge of several languages, a capacity to describe systematically structures that had previously received scant attention in the world literature of geology, and innovation in the transfer of scientific knowledge. Dżułyński also added elements that were distinctively his own: a highly inventive approach to the replication of turbidite sedimentary structures in laboratory flumes, an openness to new ideas, boundless enthusiasm for his chosen field, and an exuberantly outgoing personality. In spite of worldwide recognition for his numerous and wide-ranging achievements in geology, he viewed himself first and foremost as one of the senior students of Marian Książkiewicz. In this role, Dżułyński utilised every opportunity to present with great insight and objectivity the work of the Kraków School, enthusiastically shared his extensive knowledge of sedimentology with experienced colleagues and new acquaintances alike and, in particular, gave generous encouragement to young researchers.

Opis:
Because of hydraulic jump, the scour downstream a stepped spillway is the most confusing issue that endangers the overall stability of the spillway. In this paper, thirty-six exploratory runs are described to explore the impact of utilizing submerged water jets fixed in the stilling basin of a stepped spillway on the downstream scour measurements under various flow conditions. A smooth apron where the water jets are disabled is incorporated to characterize the impact of adjustments studied. Trials are performed utilizing different upstream discharges, jets arrangements, and tailwater depths. The results are analyzed and graphically presented. The experimental data are contrasted to a scour formulae developed by other specialists. Outcomes indicated that by utilizing submerged floor water jets, the maximum scour depth is decreased between 14.3 and 36.0%. Additionally, the maximum scour length is reduced by 9.7 to 42.3%. Finally, involving regression analysis, simple formulas are developed to estimate different scour parameters.

Opis:
The dissolved oxygen content in surface waters is one of the vital indicators for human water quality usage as well as the aquatic plant and animal environmental life sustainability. Parshall flumes are one of the important ejector devices that are successfully used for oxygen requirement satisfying in various irrigation, wastewater, and ecosystems. However, the present study aimed to manage and improve various waterworks aeration efficiency through integrated modeling of experimental and analytical analysis as well as their operation conditional parameters for the Parshall flumes configuration. On the basis of the experiment work data sets run results, the principal component regression (PCR), partial least squares (PLS), and ridge regression (RR) techniques are used to develop the required aeration efficiency prediction models for such aerators by interrelating the impact of Parshall flumes characteristics and configurations, as well as various water flow rates on aeration efficiency. The predictive models developed in the study were statistically compared to the experimental data. The comparison confirms a good reliability and high accuracy. Considering the proposed aeration models, the optimum design of the new Parshall flumes can be successfully facilitated.

Opis:
Venturi flume is a very popular measuring device. A particularly attractive version of such a device is a standing-wave-flume, as this enables determination of liquid discharge by one-point depth measurement only. However, it is necessary to underline, that some essential simplifications must be introduced into the theoretical description of this case. The paper contains the results of the control investigations of six existing Venturi flumes, installed in three functioning sewage-disposal-plants in Poland. It was shown, that some important mistakes can be committed, when somebody plans such a flume. These mistakes worsen the flow measurement accuracy. In conclusion it was stated that the standing-wave-flume must be designed very carefully, with the use of gradually-varied flow equations. An alternative, which is worth using, is a Venturi flume with two-point depth measurement.

The aim of the research was assessing the precision of obtained velocity values with the use of laboratory and field measuring devices. The research analyses the results obtained with the use of two field measuring devices. One of them was the electromagnetic current meter (Flat Model 801), which operates on the basis of the Faraday’s law. Its advantage is the lack of moveable parts, thanks to which the measurement is not encumbered with error resulting from the mechanical nature of the propeller motion. The other field measuring device used in the research was the ADPC Stream Pro, which uses the Doppler Effect present in sound ware propagation. The measurement mechanism consist in changing the frequency of the signal reflected by the moving object. The obtained with the use by of the laboratory hydroacoustic (ADV), which uses the Doppler effect. The ADV probe registers components of the velocity vectors with a relatively high frequency. The research demonstrated the universality and limitation of the field measuring devices, which can operate both in the field and in the laboratory.
