Opis:
The paper presents the results of fluid flow simulations carried out by means of the FIDAP7.6 program (a fluid dynamics FEM package) for the case of radial inflow onto a rotating shaft. The particular geometric configuration has been chosen to resemble a generalized inlet chamber of twin low-pressure steam turbines, but with the axial outlet section extended to allow better observation of flow instabilities in that region. The calculations were carried out for the same channel geometry for both compressible and incompressible flow, using the same or slightly varying boundary conditions. Extensive variation in non-physical parameters of the model was explored, such as applying different meshes over the region, as well as utilizing different turbulence and upwinding models. The intent of this research was to evaluate the relative applicability of the various available flow models to the simulation of axisymmetric flows with steep velocity gradients, and to discover the limitations of these models. The calculations have in fact established significant differences in the behavior of the simulated flow for the different meshes and models. Some results were characterized by extensive areas of recirculating flow whereas others, for the same boundary conditions, showed no recirculation. Correct near-wall meshing as well as the choice of the upwinding scheme were established as the critical factors in this regard. There was also noticeable variation in outlet velocity profiles. An extensive zone of separation within the investigated channel as well as a standing annular vortex near the point of stagnation are flow features of some interest. These patterns of flow change in response to the changing non-physical parameters; the separation zone in particular is absent or slow to develop under some setups. The influence of inflow parameters, the initial velocity distribution and turbulent intensity in particular, on flow behavior in contact with the rotating shaft have also been an area of investigation, as these are often defined with considerable uncertainty in practical applications. It was observed that some latitude in assuming these parameters did not significantly alter the relevant flow parameters at outlet (the velocity and pressure distributions), although it did induce variation in other aspects of the flow (such as the extent of the standing vortex).

Since hydro turbines are designed individually according to the local situation, this requires a huge engineering effort. In order to reduce this effort, automatic optimisation tools are necessary. In this paper the shape optimisation of a turbine draft tube is shown. Different optimisation algorithms have been applied and will be discussed. From the used algorithms, the one based on approximated gradients seems to be the fastest.

A modern CFD code was used to simulate fluid flow through a pipeline with an orifice. A two-dimensional flow was assumed. The influence of the turbulence model and the size of the numerical grid on the quality of the obtained results was tested. It appears from the performed calculations that the standard Launder-Spalding k-[eta] model yields the best results for two-dimensional flows through pipeline-orifice systems.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the airflow through the throttle in the Wankel engine (Aixro XR50). The author's main challenge was to adapt a Wankel engine for hydrogen injection system, which required a very new full electronic throttle to be installed. Thus, an injector adapter and flow meter were mounted in this engine. The engine will be used as a stationary power unit to generate electricity for small households. Using hydrogen instead of hydrocarbon fuel will reduce the emission of green house gases. The simulation was in the AVL Fire using Computational Fluid Dynamic for 9 different throttle opening angles, i.e. ranging from 20 to 90 centigrade, i.e. 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 centigrade. The boundary conditions being as the pressure at the inlet and outlet of the throttle module correspond to the real values in the engine. The data on the properties of the flowing medium (air) were selected by default from the AVL Fire library. The authors use the k-zeta-ef model of turbulence to simulate flow through a Wankel engine throttle. The simulation results include the distributions of pressure, velocity and stream lines. The dependence of the mass flow rate as a function of the throttle position angle was presented. The turbulence disappears when the throttle opening angle of 60 centigrade is crossed. For full throttle the velocity at the pipe walls decreases to about 12 m/s. The highest velocity throughout the model occurs just where the throttle is mounted.

The paper concerns experimental and numerical investigations focused on the cloud cavitation phenomenon over a hydrofoil. The results of flow visualization by means of a high- -speed camera are presented. The cavitation cycles including vapour structures occurrence, development and collapse were recorded and described. Within the numerical investigation, transient calculations of cavitating flow were performed. OpenFOAM software was used. To model mass transfer between phases, the Kunz cavitation model was chosen. Turbulences were modelled by means of k-ω SST model. The vapour areas appearance, their shapes and changes in time were described and compared with experimental results. The characteristic features of cavitating flow were observed, however further adjustment of the cavitation model was advised.

Opis:
Emission of airborne sound in the production industry is endangering the employees’ health and is lowering productivity. Circular saw blades in particular cause high sound pressure levels. Therefore, the tool geometry of saw blades should be improved in the sense that the emission of airborne sound is lowered. In this work, the basics for the tool optimization regarding the emission of airborne sound are elaborated. To avoid high costs for various prototypes and experimental investigations, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is used. By this, the effects of the adjustments of the geometry on the fluid mechanics can be researched efficiently. Using the acoustic analogy of Ffowcs-Williams/Hawkings, the results of the numerical flow simulation are converted into the sound pressure level. To validate the calculated results, previously conducted experiments are used for comparison. The calculated results correspond well to the values from the experimental measurements. Hence, it is possible to use the developed method to predict the influence of geometry adjustments on the acoustic behaviour, making the optimization process possible. In an outlook, the concept for an optimization loop is explained, which couples the CFD simulation with a parameterized geometry model and an evaluation algorithm.

Opis:
The impact of design flood in terms of water surface level and maximum velocity in a reach on the Nile River is studied, using a depth-averaged two-dimensional model. The reach includes a proposed site for a shipyard maintenance harbour. The CCHE2D model, a depth-averaged two-dimensional model, is selected to perform both the steady state computation, for calibration purposes, and flood routing through the reach to obtain maximum water surface level and velocity information. Manning's coefficient was obtained by matching the computed and measured water surface level in the reach under steady flow conditions. The computed results of velocity and water surface profiles agreed satisfactorily with the measured data. The verified model was then used to simulate a flood event within the same reach. Stage-discharge relationships for various sections within the reach were obtained. The peak water surface level at each section was compared with the flow stage under normal flow conditions. The peak stage was found to be well below the proposed elevation of the construction site. The estimation of the peak velocity and water surface level might be useful for bank protection work.

This study aimed to analyze the available amount of water in the Dragaçina River to meet the different water needs in the Municipality of Suhareka. The water problems in this city are more pronounced, especially in the vegetation period of July–September, where the area is significantly affected by drought. The Dragacina River carries about 10 hm3 of water per year, and affected neither by urbanism nor massive deforestation of the basin. However, there are no multi-year measurements of inflows for this river, whether they are average, maximum or minimum ones. Therefore, the study is based on several multi-annual monthly rainfall measurements and some characteristics of the Dragaçina River Basin. Knowing the average annual flow coefficient η = Peff / Pbruto it is possible to convert these precipitations to Peff [mm] flow and then to monthly flow. The inputs for other years from 1983/84 onwards are obtained by simulating time series. Then, for such inflows, the probability distribution functions of small waters are assigned and the usable volume balance is carried out. Assuming an average annual withdrawal from the reservoir QAmin mes. = 0.63 × Qmes. which should be constant throughout the years, then the length of the critical period will be 0.13 years or approximately 48 days, for PH = 95%. Starting from the initial acquired volume of 1 hm3 it is possible to achieve 95% < PH < 99%. Therefore, it follows from this analysis that this river can provide a significant amount of water for the needs of the Municipality of Suhareka.

Opis:
The article discusses ways for optimization of a standard nozzle cup design to achieve a narrower paint flow. The analysis of a standard nozzle cup shows that distribution of air pressure is critically uneven both along the nozzle axis and in the radial direction. A decrease in pressure is about 45% at the distance of 2 mm from the front surface of the nozzle cup. Air pressure decreases about 40% at the distance of 2 mm from the nozzle axis in the radial direction. Air velocity decreases about 52% at the distance of 4 mm from nozzle surface but then the velocity stabilizes and decreases is about 59% at the distance of 10 mm from the nozzle surface in comparison to its magnitude on the nozzle surface. Six extra holes and a circular rim were added to the standard nozzle cup to obtain paint stream as narrow as possible. Also was modified inner surface of the nuzzle cup. Totally, four different components were analysed. The results show that with increasing the nozzle cone by fifteen or more degrees, the pressure distribution decreases. Most optimal solution has six small holes around the nozzle hole and a small rim covering all holes. In this case, pressure decreases only 3% in the axial direction and 4% in the radial direction at the distance of 2 mmfrom the front surface of the nozzle. Distribution of air velocity is still significant but its magnitude is about 35% ... 45% less than at the standard nozzle cup.

The paper presents the comparison of simulation results obtained for the Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD) model of the whirlpool tank of one-sided inflow (classic) and multiplied by the circumference. The subject of the analysis was to determine the effect of using four inlets placed symmetrically on a whirlpool plane of the tank on the occurrence of the secondary flow which is responsible for the formation of the hot trub cone. Analysis of the formation time and the speed of the secondary flow which is responsible for the formation of the specific shape of the cone of sediment results showed differences depending on the variant of the filling. With respect to the classical filling better conditions (shorter cone formation forming sediment flow and higher speed) achieved during the filling multilateral.

In this paper the results of a numerical calculation of the unsteady flow inside a one-stage two-phase automotive torque converter will be presented. For the investigation the finite volume method has been employed. The commercial 3D Navier-Stokes Software CFX of ANSYS Inc. was used for the flow simulation. Here the incompressible Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations will be solved using the k-[epsilon] turbulence model. The flow field is determined by the blade position of both rotors, which have different rotating velocities. Whenever two adjacent blade rows at different speed, unsteady interactions occurs in the flow. The unsteady flow at the pump exit and turbine inlet will be analyzed through instantaneous flow fields in a period so that the rotor-rotor interaction can be in detail understood. The inlet flow of the turbine was markedly periodic and influenced by the pump jet/wake. In contras the pump outlet flow showed a little dependence on the turbine relative position.

This work encompasses the design, development, and calibration of the work piece vibration platform and experimental analysis of the process parameters by means of the hybrid micro electrical discharge machining process. The maximum material removal rate and minimum surface roughness was observed at the current value of 2.5 A, pulse on time is 2 μs and pulse off time is 14.5 μs. The maximum material removal rate was observed for the increase in pulse on time with 14.4 μs and 4 A current level. The diametrical accuracy of the microholes was increased while increasing the pulse off time and decreasing the pulse on time. The fluid flow simulation has been conducted to find out the pressure drop and to know the velocity of the flow inside the hole for the effective flushing of the debris during machining.

Modern transport systems are characterized by the development and implementation of intelligent transport technologies. Today, dynamic forecast models are not used in practice in the operation of a passenger terminal. Decision making is based on some regulatory values for passenger traffic, but this is not sufficient for efficient terminal management. Modern passenger terminals are characterized by dynamic proces variability and consideration of diverse options, taking into account the criteria of safety, reliability analysis, and the continuous research of passenger processing. For any modern marine passenger terminal, it is necessary to use the tool to simulate passenger flows in dynamics. Only in this way it is possible to obtain the analytical information and use it for decision making when solving the problem of the amount of personnel required for passenger service, transport safety, some forecasting tasks and so on. Of particular relevance is the choice of the mathematical transport model and the practical conditions for the implementation of the model in the real terminal operation. In this article, the analysis technique of intelligent simulation-based terminal services provides a new mathematical model of passenger movement inside the terminal and presents a new software instrument. Moreover, the conditions of implementation of some transportation models during the operation of marine passenger terminal are examined. The study represents an example of analytical information used for the forecast of the terminal operations, the analysis of the workload and the efficiency of the organization of the marine terminal.
