Opis:
The paper presents the results related to the simulation of dust-separating tangential cyclones: single cyclones of various geometries, and an axial multi-cyclone with fixed geometries and components. Its goal was to apply low-cost analyses for cyclones in industrial realization. Therefore, the presented research was applied with simulation methodology as a problem of Computational Fluid Dynamics. The models were analyzed using SolidWorks Flow Simulation software. The presented dust collectors are real-life objects, applied in industrial facilities. For a multi-cyclone, the increase in the number of blades, from 5 to 8, together with the change in the angle of a blade’s pitch i.e., 30° and 45°, resulted in dust concentration along the internal walls from just 10% for 5 blades up to c.a. 37.5% for 6 blades, and c.a. 50% for 8 blades, whereas the dust concentration in the device’s central part equals c.a. 20% for the last option. The model validation draws attention to the potential applicability of the software in flow issues alongside common and more complex numerical environments.

Opis:
Short-term traffic flow prediction plays a significant role in various applications of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), such as road traffic control and route guidance. This requires the development of intelligent prediction approaches for accurate and timely traffic flow information. To handle this issue, this paper emphasizes the potential of a new idea to propose a high-quality and intelligent prediction of short-term traffic flow in ITS. The proposed model, referred to as ITS-Pro-Flow, takes the benefits of the well-known Profile-Energy (Pro-Energy) as a landmark solution, relying on past observations and current conditions to forecast future short-term traffic flow volume. ITS-Pro-Flow has an effective prediction mechanism due to its unique enhancements over Pro-Energy. The distinctive feature of ITS-Pro-Flow is that it dynamically adjusts the contributions of past predictions and current observations for a particular prediction, which is equally performed in Pro-Energy. We prove the performance of ITS-Pro-Flow through extensive simulations with 2 datasets, in comparison to Pro-Energy and IPro-Energy. Performance results clearly indicate that ITS-Pro-Flow provides more accurate predictions than other schemes.

Opis:
In recent years, due to the increasing number of renewable energy sources, which are characterised by the stochastic nature of the generated power, interest in energy storage has increased. Commercial installations use simple deterministic methods with low economic efficiency. Hence, there is a need for intelligent algorithms that combine technical and economic aspects. Methods based on computational intelligence (CI) could be a solution. The paper presents an algorithm for optimising power flow in microgrids by using computational intelligence methods. This approach ensures technical and economic efficiency by combining multiple aspects in a single objective function with minimal numerical complexity. It is scalable to any industrial or residential microgrid system. The method uses load and generation forecasts at any time horizon and resolution and the actual specifications of the energy storage systems, ensuring that technological constraints are maintained. The paper presents selected calculation results for a typical residential microgrid supplied with a photovoltaic system. The results of the proposed algorithm are compared with the outcomes provided by a deterministic management system. The computational intelligence method allows the objective function to be adjusted to find the optimal balance of economic and technical effects. Initially, the authors tested the invented algorithm for technical effects, minimising the power exchanged with the distribution system. The application of the algorithm resulted in financial losses, €12.78 for the deterministic algorithm and €8.68 for the algorithm using computational intelligence. Thus, in the next step, a control favouring economic goals was checked using the CI algorithm. The case where charging the storage system from the grid was disabled resulted in a financial benefit of €10.02, whereas when the storage system was allowed to charge from the grid, €437.69. Despite the financial benefits, the application of the algorithm resulted in up to 1560 discharge cycles. Thus, a new unconventional case was considered in which technical and economic objectives were combined, leading to an optimum benefit of €255.17 with 560 discharge cycles per year. Further research of the algorithm will focus on the development of a fitness function coupled to the power system model.

Opis:
Retrofitting heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in existing buildings and applying energy-efficient technologies can significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases emissions. In this work, two options of HVAC retrofitting were proposed and discussed for the existing heating system of school of engineering at the University of Jordan as a case study. The experimental tests showed that only one of the three diesel boilers work normally while the other two boilers are not efficient, with actual efficiency of 25%. The first retrofitting was to upgrade the existing heating system to a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) boiler system with estimated annual saving of 29,757 Jordanian dinar (JOD), and a payback period of 3.9 years. The second option for retrofitting was a new HVAC system for the building including heating and air conditioning with a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system and heat pump chiller. The estimated cost showed that the VRF system was the lowest one in running cost in winter. The diesel boilers had the highest greenhouse gas emissions with an average value of 377.3 tons of CO2 per year, while LPG boilers achieved the second highest emissions of around 279 tons of CO2 per year, whereas the heat pump chiller in winter produced 199 tons of CO2 and the VRF system emitted 180 tons in winter. The LCCA economic analysis was performed for the proposed systems, showing that the LPG boilers system was more feasible than the diesel boilers system, while the VRF system was more feasible than the heat pump chiller system.

The paper describes the possibility of recovering a part of a pallet’s kinetic energy during storage on a flow rack. In order to develop the solution, it was necessary to make assumptions, create a computational model and analyse energy transformations during the storage process. The proposed solution, based on the results of the model and analysis, is able to recover energy from flow racks and transform it into a usable form. The paper analyses an appropriate localisation for the energy recovery system, describes its efficiency and defines its cost effectiveness.

The operation of an autonomous movable objects, such as a sea transport vessels, implies the presence of a source of potential energy on board the vessel and the possibility of converting this energy into the work required for the autonomous movable object (vessel). Being an autonomous object, a transport vessel should be provided with energy for it moving, energy for heat exchange processes on board and electricity for powering electrical equipment, automation and navigation systems, and household needs on board. An analysis of the component of the engine room equipment made it possible to designate (combine) the generating equipment of mechanical energy flow, equipment which are generating the heat energy flow and equipment which are generating the electric energy flow. Based on the results of the research the relationships between the energy flows are identified connections and ways to ensure stabilization of energy generation on board the cargo vessel is outlined. Using the results of the research the relationships between the energy flows will reduce the likelihood of accidents on board a cargo vessel due to a stop in the generation of one of the energy flows and thereby ensure increased safety of man at sea. Taking into account the peculiarities of the distribution of energy flows in ship power plants can be an effective tool not only to improve the economic performance of it, but also to increase the safety of navigation and navigation in general, due to the reliable provision of uninterrupted and efficient operation of ship power plants.

Therefore, this paper proposes a research analysis on high-pressure hoses and junctions during technical maintenance. Comparative analysis of fluid behavior and energy efficiency inside non-repaired and repaired high-pressure hoses is presented in this research. Theoretical and experimental research results for hydraulic processes inside high-pressure hose is based on the numerical simulations using Navier–Stokes equations and experimental measurement of fluid flow pressure inside high-pressure hoses. Research of fluid flow dynamics in the hydraulic system was made with main assumptions: system flow rate in the range from 5 to 100 l/min, diameter of the hoses and repairing fitting are 3/8". The pressure drops, power losses, flow coefficients at non-repaired and after maintenance hose was obtained as a result. Simulation results were verified by running physical experiments to measure the pressure losses.

The review exposes basic concepts and manifestations of the singular and structured light fields. The presentation is based on deep intrinsic relations between the singularities and the rotational phenomena in light; it involves essentially the dynamical aspects of light fields and their interactions with matter. Due to their topological nature, the singularities of each separate parameter (phase, polarization, energy flow, etc.) form coherent interrelated systems (singular networks), and the meaningful interconnections between the different singular networks are analysed. The main features of singular-light structures are introduced via generic examples of the optical vortex and circular vortex beams. The review describes approaches for generation and diagnostics of different singular networks and underlines the role of singularities in formation of optical field structures. The mechanical action of structured light fields on material objects is discussed on the base of the spin-orbital (canonical) decomposition of electromagnetic momentum, expressing the special roles of the spin (polarization) and spatial degrees of freedom. Experimental demonstrations spectacularly characterize the topological nature and the immanent rotational features of the light-field singularities. The review is based on the results obtained by its authors with a special attention to relevant works of other researchers.

European Union directives and national regulations clearly indicate the development of nearly zero-energy and low-carbon construction. The article provides information on what building components affect this and how to achieve it. The energy in the building is consumed during its erection - the so called embodied energy and long-term operational energy. The energy and ecological parameters are mainly influenced by the basic components: the building envelope and its thermal properties and tightness, efficient building services as well as energy sources and the method of energy conversion. All these components have an impact on the non-renewable primary energy index and the carbon dioxine emission factor. Examples of technical solutions ensuring these low parameters are shown. The proposed direction of action is necessary for the future to meet the requirements of low carbon dioxide emissions and the increase in the use of renewable energy in construction.

Electric vehicles equipped with fuel cells and a battery (FCHEV – fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle) in a parallel configuration boast increased energy transfer capabilities. The article presents an energy flow analysis in a parallel hybrid drive system with fuel cells and a battery. The research was carried out on a 30 W vehicle made in 1:10 scale with a NiMH battery and a fuel cell with a proton exchange membrane (PEM). Increasing driving dynamics causes a 29% increase in energy consumption, 43.6% reduction of energy transfer from a fuel cell and a 23% increase of in the energy share intended for battery charging. Continuous operation of the system in full power mode ensures a much greater efficiency of energy transmission to the drive train (95%) compared to the system operating in dynamic driving conditions – 64–75%.

Opis:
The search for new, alternative propulsion and energy sources in transport is one of the economic and technological priorities of the current decade. The modern development of hybrid drives and electric means of transport makes it possible to at least partially diversify conventional drive systems. The study discusses the use of a battery and ultracapacitor in electric vehicles. Simulation analyzes of energy flow were performed using the solutions of electric drive systems and various energy storage control algorithms. The research was carried out in relation to the use of braking energy, its con-version into electricity and its storage in a battery or ultracapacitor. The operating conditions of the battery and the ultra-capacitor were assessed in terms of specific energy consumption while driving. The article proposed the use of a drive system connected in series, the last link of which was an ultracapacitor. Such a solution significantly reduced the use of the battery as well as its regular charging-discharging. At the same time, it required the use of a high-capacity ultracapacitor, which contributed to increasing its charging time. The analyzes were carried out using standardized research tests as well as tests in real traffic conditions. The research was carried out with the use of the AVL Cruise software for the analysis of energy flow in vehicles; a middle class passenger vehicle was selected for the tests, equipped with an electrochemical battery and – in the next stage of the research – an ultracapacitor. Three research models were used: I) typical electric drive system; II) a system with the use of ultracapacitors ran by a simple control algorithm; III) a system with the use of ultracapacitors with an advanced control algorithm (the algorithm took into account the change of driving conditions to the ultracapacitor charging conditions). The advantages of using ultracapacitors in the electric drive of a vehicle were demonstrated, especially for results obtained in real traffic conditions. Analyzing the simulation tests results allowed to determine the most advantageous options of utilizing these systems, in particular in the aspect of increased possibilities of algorithms controlling the flow of electricity in the drive system.

Opis:
Emerging communication technologies are now leading developers to design IT systems taking into count their energy-related considerations. Much research performed in the area of ad-hoc wireless networks tends to distribute the flows over all nodes of the network, which increases the amount of energy consumed by each node and reduces longevity of the network. To overcome these problems, this paper seeks to aggregate a set of flows within a number of nodes that is as low as possible in order to be capable of routing those flows. This proposal allows to maximize the number of network nodes that may be turned off. The proposed solution was formulated as an integer linear programming (ILP) problem using a set of energy and quality of service (QoS) constraints. This formulation minimizes the total energy consumed by the nodes to construct a topology network that is capable of meeting QoS requirement for a set flows inserted into the network. To evaluate the efficiency of the proposed model, a performance-based comparison was conducted with another routing model. The simulation results show that the proposed model offers better performance in terms of global energy consumption and network load.
