Opis:
This paper studies size-by-size batch flotation kinetics for the separation of Cu at particle sizes +75 μm, investigating the responses in the -150/+75 μm, -212/+150 μm, -300/+212 μm, -355/+300 μm and +355 μm size fractions. The kinetic results were analyzed to identify classes limited by the maximum achievable recovery or low flotation rates. Combinations of these classes were investigated, emulating the selection of the coarsest size in a kinetic study. The impact of compositing size classes was discussed, emphasizing implications in the identification of difficult-to-float components. The -212/+75 μm classes reached steady recoveries at long flotation times, whereas the -355/+212 μm classes presented sustained increasing recoveries at extended flotation times. Flotation rate distributions in the -212/+75 μm classes exhibited mound-shaped distributions, indicating low fractions of rate constants close to zero (R∞-limited case). Conversely, the -355/+212 μm classes presented reverse J-shaped distributions, with a high fraction of valuable minerals with flotation rates close to zero (rate-limited case). Combining several size classes in the definition of the coarsest size fraction in kinetic characterizations proved to hide the flotation patterns of the less massive constituents (+212 μm classes). The +75 μm and +150 μm cumulative retained classes trended towards steady recoveries, consistently leading to mounded flotation rate distributions. This study highlighted the need for reliable methodologies to select size fractions in kinetic characterizations, as their arbitrary definitions may lead to a misinterpretation of the mineral losses when compositing classes with different flotation responses.

This paper studies kinetic aspects of toner flotation in a mechanical cell with methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) as a frother by using a synthetic toner sample 212+0 μm in a size at variable pH. The effect of the MIBC dosage and pH value on the flotation behavior of the toner has been investigated in terms of toner recovery and fiber recovery. Two kinetic models, the classical first order model and a modified first order model, have been tested and compared. It was established that the achieved optimal parameters of flotation were MIBC 1.5 mg/dm3 and pH from 7 to 12. The obtained results indicate that the toner floats rapidly and that flotation kinetics fits well the modified first order model with a very good correlation coefficient compared to the correlation coefficient for the classical first order model.

Flotation recovery and kinetics for three size fractions of coal were investigated. Flotation of combustible matter recovery was approximated with the first order kinetic equation while flotation of the ash forming minerals with the second order equation. Next, the equations for each size fraction were combined and a formula was obtained which was used for approximation of the experimental results using the so-called Fuerstenau upgrading curve, which relates the recovery of combustible matter recovery and recovery of ash forming minerals, both in concentrate. The Fuerstenau upgrading plot showed that the best selectivity was obtained for the middle size fraction of 0.25–0.075 mm, while the flotation selectivity of larger 0.5–0.25 mm and smaller –0.075 mm particles was diminished. This finding agrees with many other investigations.

Opis:
This paper studies the effect of moderate deviations with respect to perfect mixing on the estimated kinetic parameters in industrial flotation banks. Radioactive tracer tests and mass balance surveys were performed to characterize the mixing regimes and Cu kinetic responses. For three models (Single Rate Constant, Rectangular and Gamma), two approaches to incorporate the residence time distributions (RTD) in the kinetic characterizations of rougher banks were compared: (i) RTDs measured from the radioactive tracer tests; and (ii) pure perfect mixing in each flotation machine. The measured RTDs did not present significant bypass in the evaluated banks. In all cases, comparable model fitting was obtained with both RTD approaches, which indicates that the kinetic models add sufficient flexibility to compensate for moderate biases in the mixing regime. The studied kinetic models showed non-significant differences in the estimated maximum recoveries (R∞), mean (kmean) and median (k50) rate constants when comparing the process modelling from measured RTDs and pure perfect mixing. However, the Gamma model was more sensitive to the RTD assumption in terms of the shapes of the flotation rate distributions. From the results, kinetic characterizations focused only on model fitting, or on R∞ and kmean (or k50) estimations have low sensitivity to the assumption of perfect mixing when the RTDs present moderate deviations with respect to this regime. Special attention must be paid when characterizing floating components as the perfect mixing assumption may bias the shapes of the flotation rate distributions.

The recent developments in mineral processing led researchers to look for alternative methods and propose new mechanisms for enhancing the efficiency of relatively costly processes (e.g., flotation, aggregation), where especially dealing with fine particles. Finer the particles, the higher the role of their surface on their behavior and properties. The importance of particle morphology becomes even clearer when particle-particle and particle-bubble interactions are considered. In this study, the effect of particle shape “roundness” on the surface wettability and flotation response was investigated upon producing fine particles with the “abrasion blasting” method. In order to provide a fundamental perspective, adsorption measurements were also carried out along with the flotation experiments under the same conditions. In addition to these, zeta potential measurements were also carried out with both spherical and blasted particles as a function of collector concentration. The results suggested that the roundness of particles decreased up to a certain nozzle pressure value, which was followed by higher adsorption degrees and consequently higher flotation recoveries. Additionally, settling rate tests were also performed with very fine material to show the effect of particle morphology on particle-particle interactions. The results showed that while lower settling rate values were obtained for spherical ones, higher values were obtained in the case of the ground and blasted samples in the presence of DI water. It was concluded from this study that the “Abrasive blasting method” could be an effective alternative for tuning the surface morphology of particles and their wettability, which in turn can affect the particle interactions in the system.

Opis:
There are many graphical representations of separation results involving time as a crucial parameter determining the kinetics of a process. The graphical representations of results of separation are usually in the form of 2D plots relating two parameters which one of them is time. Time can also be utilized as a complex parameter such as a process rate. The plots involving time are called kinetic curves. Theoretically, the number of kinetic curves is infinite. The basic process kinetic curves, relating either yield (or recovery) and time can be modified to obtain numerous local and global efficiency curves. The global efficiency kinetic curves provide characteristic constants which do not change with the time and yield of a process. In this paper the local and global efficiency plots were created using experimental data which followed the so-called first order kinetics. It was shown that the integral 1st order kinetic equation provided the kinetic constant k which was numerically identical with the 1st order specific rate v, while their units were different (k, 1/min; v, %/(%·min). The global efficiency parameters plotted versus the maximum yield provided another type of plot, which can be called the limits kinetic curve. The limits kinetic curves are very useful for characterizing, quantification and classification of separation systems. The limits kinetic curves can be normalized providing one universal curve with a characteristic point, for instance, v50 indicating the specific rate (or kinetic) constant at the maximum recovery equal to 50%. The mathematical equation of the normalized limits kinetic curve was given in the paper.

Opis:
The effect of air rate and froth depth on the entrainment factor in flotation has been extensively studied, but further investigation on the underlying mechanism for their effect is still required. In this study, flotation tests were performed at different air rates and froth depths in a 3 $dm^3$ continuously operated cell using an artificial copper ore. The results showed that entrainment factor was affected by both air rate and froth depth, and the combined effect of these variables on entrainment factor depended strongly on the particle size. The entrainment factor increased with either increasing air rate at a relatively shallow froth or decreasing froth depth at a relatively high air rate. At a very low air rate and deep froth, higher entrainment factor was observed for mid-size and coarse particles. When the entrainment factor was correlated to the effective liquid velocity at the pulp/froth interface, the results indicated that multiple mechanisms were responsible for the effect on entrainment factor. At a relatively high air rate and shallow froth depth, entrainment factor had a linear relationship with the interface effective liquid velocity, suggesting that drag force dominated the change in the entrainment factor when air rate and froth depth were varied. At a very low air rate and deep froth, the entrainment factor for fine particles was found to correlate strongly with the interface effective liquid velocity, while the entrapment of solid particles may be the main reason for the high entrainment factor for mid-size and coarse particles under this condition.

In this research study, we focus on the tree test results as well as the first-order kinetic model to evaluate flotation test data to propose a conceptual design of a flotation circuit for a specific coal sample. Results from the tree test showed it was possible to achieve a product with ash content less than 10% with 8% as combustible recovery and indicated for this coal sample, to obtain low ash – low recovery condition. Kinetic test results showed some of the streams had the same constant, so it could combine streams with similar rates according to configuration aspects. The proposed circuit includes stages (1- rougher, 2- rougher -scavenger, 3- cleaner, 4- cleaner -scavenger, and 5-recleaner) and recleaner concentrate indicated as the final product and rougher -scavenger tailings and cleaner -scavenger tailings also indicated as a final tailing. It is worth noting the proposed circuit is a conceptual design, so the validation of data on a larger scale for the obtainment of the optimized circuit is crucial.

Opis:
A cyclonic-static micro-bubble flotation column (FCSMC) has been widely used in mineral separation. FCSMC includes countercurrent, cyclone and jet flow mineralization zones in a single column. In this study, the energy feature of the three different zones was compared. The turbulent flow was evaluated in terms of the turbulent kinetic energy (k) and the turbulent dissipation rate (ε). An appropriate computing model was determined by comparing the flow field value measured by PIV with the results of the Fluent numerical simulation. Jet flow separation exhibited the maximum k and ε values among the three columns, whereas counter-current separation displayed the minimum values. The high circulating volumetric flowrate means great energy input and turbulent intensity. The higher turbulent dissipation rate, the smaller the bubble is. The better performance of the FCSMC was mainly attributed to the multiple mineralization steps. The floatability of mineral particles gradually decreases with an increase in flotation time, the mineralization energy gradually increased to overcome the decrease in mineral floatability. By contrast, the countercurrent was beneficial for recovering the coarse particles, and the jet flow was beneficial for recovering the fine particles.

Therefore, the effects of some operational parameters such as wash water rate, airflow rate and froth height were investigated on the streams of namely Cu first cleaner concentrate, Cu rougher concentrate and Cu third cleaner concentrate in terms of mineral recoveries and selectivity. Distribution of wash water rate to products was also determined by a tracer test method. Optimum operating conditions and accordingly performance of the column were determined by simulation studies. According to the results, the suitable streams for industrial scale flotation column are advised as the rougher concentrate and/or first cleaner concentrate. Natural weathering processes can make coal surface more hydrophilic due to the increase of content of hydrophilic functional groups (C-O, C=O, and COOH) and the decrease of content of hydrophobic functional groups (C-C and C-H) on coal surface, and hence the flotation recovery of fine coal is reduced. In this paper, a series of flotation tests were conducted in order to investigate the changes in the flotation kinetic of bituminous coal before and after natural weathering processes. Additionally, XPS was used to indicate the changes in surface properties of bituminous coal. In the investigations the flotation kinetic was changing. The classical first-order rate constant (k) of bituminous coal flotation was reduced after the natural weathering processes. A relationship between the classical first-order rate constant (k) and the hydrophilicity ability (HA) was given.
