Opis:
This study explores the characterization, liberation and flotation response of low-grade copper ore from Anka area, Zamfara state Nigeria. The ore was crushed, milled and sieved in accordance with BS 410 standard. It was characterized with XRD, XRF, SEM-EDS and AAS. Froth flotation was carried out with varying %solids, pH, retention time and collector dosages using SEX and sodium oleate. Particle size distribution of the ore shows its economic liberation between -150 and +106 µm while 80% passing corresponds to 175.7 µm using the Gaudin Schuhmann equation. However, according to metallurgical balance calculation, 63 µm proved to have the highest metal content. Identified peaks of the copper ore by XRD revealed the presence of pyrite and chalcopyrite as the major mineral content at 47 and 36%, respectively, while other elements were present in traces. XRF shows Fe and Cu as the major elements and others in traces. Morphology, according to SEM-EDS, revealed that Fe is the major impurity while the presence of Cu and S confirmed chalcopyrite is present in the ore minerals. AAS shows an average of 25.87% Cu and 32% Fe in the ore. Optimum recoveries of copper were recorded at 30% solids, pH of 8, 30 minutes retention time. The highest recovery of 95.94% was recorded with SEX at 0.25 mol/dm3, while recoveries were lower with PAX, the highest recovery being 33% at 0.20 mol/dm3. 0.25 mol/dm3 of SEX recorded the highest yield and enrichment ratio of 40.38 and 2.38, respectively.

Opis:
It is well documented that unavoidable ions in a pulp such as Mg2+, Ca2+, and K+ have a significant effect on the interaction for particles, especially for flotation of metallic sulfide minerals and clay minerals. In this study, the effect of electrolytes on the flotation of inherently hydrophobic mineral-graphite was studied. It was found that the zeta potential showed a dramatic decrease, and the reagent adsorption capacity of mineral enhanced in the present of electrolytes. The possible mechanism responsible for improved recovery was investigated by electrokinetic, surface tension and ions adsorption tests. It is likely that the hydrophobic force is stronger than the electrostatic force due to the reduced potential of graphite. This might be in favor of the formation of hydrophobic oil film leading to an increase in the graphite floatability. The experiments provided a new spectacle to study inherently hydrophobic mineral processing with electrolyte solution.

Opis:
The flotation separation of chalcopyrite from monoclinic pyrrhotite using food-grade guar gum (FGG) as a depressant was studied through micro flotation and flotation kinetics experiments, zeta potential, adsorption measurements and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis as well as infrared spectroscopy analysis. The flotation tests showed that the reagent scheme of depressant FGG 40 mg/dm3, collector PAX (potassium amyl xanthate) 10 mg/dm3 and frother MIBC (Methyl isobutyl carbinol) 10 mg/dm3 at pH 8.0 could achieve selective flotation separation of chalcopyrite from monoclinic pyrrhotite (a concentrate with Cu grade of 22.35% and recovery of 82.52% was achieved from the mixed minerals flotation), which indicated that FGG exhibited a selective depression effect on monoclinic pyrrhotite The kinetics, zeta potential, adsorption, SEM and infrared studies revealed that the depressant FGG could absorb more strongly on the surface of monoclinic pyrrhotite than chalcopyrite. Additionally, the results revealed that the interaction of FGG with the monoclinic pyrrhotite surface was governed primarily by strong chemisorption, whereas FGG mainly bonded to chalcopyrite through hydrogen bonding bonding. This property was the reason why FGG had excellent depression selectivity toward monoclinic pyrrhotite and weak depression effect on chalcopyrite flotation.

Opis:
This study aimed to find optimal models in a comparative framework to estimate the recovery and grade of barite concentrate obtained from the rougher flotation of the barite tailings. Therefore, firstly, the effect of four operating parameters (flotation time, pH, collector dosage, and depressant dosage) on the rougher flotation of the barite tailings containing 37.23% BaSO4 was experimentally investigated. Secondly, two models called the multivariable linear regression (MLR) and the artificial neural network (ANN) were used for the estimation of the recovery and grade of the barite concentrate for the rougher flotation optimization. The R2 values found from the MLR and ANN models were 0.828 and 0.995 for the concentrate recovery, and 0.977 and 0.960 for the barite concentrate grade, respectively. In the comparison of the models determined, it was found that the ANN model expressed quite well than the MLR models, especially for the recovery of the rougher concentrate.

Opis:
With the continuous depletion of a large number of zinc sulphide ores that are easy to treat, the finely disseminated and refractory low-grade zinc oxide ores has become an important source for the production of zinc minerals. In this paper, a sulfurization-amination flotation process has been proposed for concentrating large amounts of low-grade zinc oxide ore in Lanping, Yunnan Province. Spectrum analysis, chemical analysis and element analysis was performed to provide research basis for process design and operational control. The main influencing factors during the process, including grinding fineness, reagent types and dosage, etc., have been studied through flotation tests. The results showed that the optimum grinding fineness was -0.074 mm accounting for 89.78% for the target run-of mine ore. Moreover, optimum dosages of sodium carbonate, sodium silicate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium sulphide and octadecylamine were determined as 1500 g/t, 500 g/t, 200g/t, 8000 g/t and 500 g/t, respectively. Under these conditions, an open circuit test and a closed circuit test with one stage rougher, two stage scavenger and three stage cleaner flotation were carried out with the run-of-mine ore with a zinc grade of 6.52% and the oxidation ratio of 94.62%. The zinc concentrate can be obtained with zinc grade of 44.09% at a zinc recovery of 66.35% with a 9.70% yield of zinc concentrate yield. The results confirmed the validity and practicability of the proposed process design and experimental operation. This study is of special value as it provides referencing significance for economically exploiting low-grade zinc oxide ore.

Opis:
The challenge of coal depletion has, among other resolutions, forced countries such as South Africa which depend heavily on coal-generated electricity to consider low-grade coal to meet their energy requirements. The Emalahleni Coalfield has an abundance of low-grade coal in-situ and in discards obtained from the No. 4 seam. This research thus seeks to give a technical assessment of the beneficiation potential of such coal for use in power stations linked to the coalfield. To that end, gravimetric and flotation beneficiation techniques were used, and their demineralisation capacities were assessed using physicochemical and petrographic analysis techniques. The results obtained showed that demineralisation of the coal was possible; with 29.1 and 33.6% ash obtained for an ~50% mass yield from gravimetric and flotation beneficiation techniques, respectively, against a thermal ash content requirement of 25–34% for coal-generated electricity.

Opis:
Soft sensors are mathematical models that estimate the value of a process variable that is difficult or expensive to measure directly. They can be based on first principle models, data-based models, or a combination of both. These models are increasingly used in mineral processing to estimate and optimize important performance parameters such as mill load, mineral grades, and particle size. This study investigates the development of a data-driven soft sensor to predict the silicate content in iron ore reverse flotation concentrate, a crucial indicator of plant performance. The proposed soft sensor model employs a dataset obtained from Kaggle, which includes measurements of iron and silicate content in the feed to the plant, reagent dosages, weight and pH of pulp, as well as the amount of air and froth levels in the flotation units. To reduce the dimensionality of the dataset, Principal Component Analysis, an unsupervised machine learning method, was applied. The soft sensor model was developed using three machine learning algorithms, namely, Ridge Regression, Multi-Layer Perceptron, and Random Forest. The Random Forest model, created with non-reduced data, demonstrated superior performance, with an R-squared value of 96.5% and a mean absolute error of 0.089. The results suggest that the proposed soft sensor model can accurately predict the silicate content in the iron ore flotation concentrate using machine learning algorithms. Moreover, the study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate algorithms for soft sensor developments in mineral processing plants.
