Opis:
Intense rain in the south em part of the Vistula 's watershed in Ju(v 2001 resulted in floods in many places and in flood water flows on the Vistula and its tributaries. The culmination of the flood reached the Gulf of Gdańsk in the night of 5th August 2001. In the period 4th to 6th August, 10 samples of water were taken, and d1e content of biogenic substances and of other components in these samples was determined. Basing on water flow measurements and on the content of the investigated components, the loads were calculated and compared with mean multi-annual loads for the pen·od 1984- 1998. It was found that the mean biogen load, related to water flow, was exceeded many times. Also the relationships between the analysed components, water flow and variability during the period of investigations were detennined. Obtained results show that there may be a very significant influence of biogens on the condition of the environment and on the dynamics of biocenotic processes of the Gulf of Gdańsk in the period before and after the propagation of flood waters of the Vistula.

Opis:
The paper presents the measurement results of bedload sediment transport during the flood flows observed in the Zagożdżonka River. The point for measuring the bedload transport, equipped with sediment catcher, devices for continuous measurements, and automated data recording, was localized above the Czarna gauge station in catchment studied by the Department of Hydraulic Engineering and Environmental Restoration, Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW. The results of bedload transport measurements during one of the flood flow waves were compared to those calculated by using the Bagnold’s formula. To determine the critical bed-shear stress, the Author’s formula resulting from laboratory experiments, was used. Calculated variability of bedload transport rate during analyzed flood flow wave apparently differed from that directly measured. Nevertheless, mass of bedload achieved from calculations was lower by 6% than that from measurements, which can be considered as good result consistence.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki pomiarów transportu rumowiska wleczonego w czasie siedmiu wezbrań obserwowanych w rzece Zagożdżonce. Do pomiaru wleczenia wykorzystano łapacz rumowiska wyposażony w aparaturę do ciągłego pomiaru i automatycznej rejestracji masy zatrzymanego w nim rumowiska.

Opis:
The results of estimation of the probable annual fl ood fl ows with the use of various sets of data from a small agricultural lowland river are presented. The traditional statistical series are formed from the annual maximum (AM) fl ows of hydrological years. After examination of the homogeneity of the series, two sets of data were formed (AM1 of 34 elements and AM2 of 40 elements), which differed in the signifi cance level of one of the stationary tests. The other series for fl ood frequency analysis has been formed by selecting peaks over threshold discharges (POT). A computer program, developed by IMGW (Institute of Hydrology and Water Management), and spreadsheet were applied for frequency analysis with the use of AM series and POT series, espectively. Results of computations with the use of AM1 and AM2 data indicate for nonsignifi cant differences in probable fl ood fl ows, and signifi cant with the probable fl ood fl ow estimated with the POT data.

Opis:
Recent field measurements of mobile-bed roughness in selected streams in Czech Republic are described. The results are collected in a database organized to a www catalogue. The field results of the bed roughness in two gravel-bed streams under flash flood conditions are discussed. A methodology is suggested for evaluation of the bed roughness of straight channels transporting sediments. A prediction of the bed roughness under the condition of intense sediment transport in the upper plane bed regime is demonstrated on the results of laboratory pressurized-pipe tests. An application to flood conditions in a steep mountain creek is shown in a case study.

Opis:
Synthetic modelling of the flood regime is based on the overall knowledge of the hydrological regime in a catchment. The Flow-duration-Frequency (QdF) modelling is used to combine three parameters characterising flood with its mean or exceeded flow, its characteristic duration, and occurrence frequency. Which of these can be established locally at the extreme mean volume flow rates of a catchment reference hydrometric station? The determination of the reference QdF model in mean (volume) and exceeded flows requires two characteristics reflecting the flood regime in a catchment. The first is the characteristic flood duration and the second is the 10-year quantile of the annual maximum instantaneous flow. The comparison of the local situation to the reference QdF models enables to develop the final QdF model of the catchment and therefore the baseline QdF for exceeded and synthetic mono-frequency hydrographs. These are essential components in the study of flood risk mapping and the estimation of the instantaneous peak distribution from mean daily streamflow series.

Opis:
Non-damaging flow below storage reservoirs is one of the key factors which affect proper water management, especially the protection of valleys against flooding. Following analysis of river flow capacities below reservoirs it should be noted that, over the years, these capacities are subject to significant limitations. This is usually caused by inappropriate floodplain management. Buildings are often built closer to the river channels, which in consequence causes flooding of the buildings at low flood discharges. Repeated inundations and thus increasing losses oblige the local authorities to maintain low outflows from reservoirs in the first phase of the freshet, which leads to a rapid fulfillment of flood reserves of the reservoirs. Then, the culmination of flood wave often takes place when the reservoirs are filled and consequently high discharges from the reservoirs must be realized. This causes flooding of the areas and buildings below the storage reservoirs. This situation could have been avoided if the riverbeds and floodplains had been adjusted to pass non-damaging flow and adopted it as the basis for the water management of a given reservoir. A significant improvement in reduced reservoir capacities will occur if the values of non-damaging flow below the reservoirs are increased and the losses caused by flood flow are significantly reduced by appropriate spatial development of the areas below the storage reservoirs. The current non-damaging flow below the Mietków reservoir is a striking example of the issue. Three farms located within the floodplain of the Bystrzyca river have an adverse impact on water management of the reservoir when floods take place.

Opis:
This article presents material about the flood on the Vere River on 13-14 June, 2015. It caused significant economic and ecological damage to the country, and there were also human victims. The reasons for the ecological disaster are evaluated and appropriate hydrological calculations have been carried out. It has been particularly established that the predictable (forecasting) maximal discharges of 0,1% value for Vere River is 520 m3/sec and not 410 m3/sec, that was calculated water conduct tunnels in the entrance of city before the Mtkvari River. The flood on the 13-14 June 2015 and the connected tragedy was caused by high intensive precipitation in the catchment basin, the activation of geodynamic processes, and also anthropogenic factors. In our opinion, a reason of disaster also was a design flaw in hydrotechnical buildings (tunnels) – they are not able to manage a water flow rate of 0,1% assurance. The paper presents the recommendations necessary for us to avoid, or at least reduce, the ecological and economic problems caused by floods and debris flow. The presented recommendations against a disaster like that which affected Tbilisi, as well as the expected environmental problems on territory with similar natural conditions, will enable us to avoid or reduce damage caused by flood and debris flow.

Opis:
The impact of design flood in terms of water surface level and maximum velocity in a reach on the Nile River is studied, using a depth-averaged two-dimensional model. The reach includes a proposed site for a shipyard maintenance harbour. The CCHE2D model, a depth-averaged two-dimensional model, is selected to perform both the steady state computation, for calibration purposes, and flood routing through the reach to obtain maximum water surface level and velocity information. Manning's coefficient was obtained by matching the computed and measured water surface level in the reach under steady flow conditions. The computed results of velocity and water surface profiles agreed satisfactorily with the measured data. The verified model was then used to simulate a flood event within the same reach. Stage-discharge relationships for various sections within the reach were obtained. The peak water surface level at each section was compared with the flow stage under normal flow conditions. The peak stage was found to be well below the proposed elevation of the construction site. The estimation of the peak velocity and water surface level might be useful for bank protection work.
