    The present study examined the effect of gender on stressful experiences of first year students in one selected public university in Kenya. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted to guide data collection. The participants were one hundred and ninety eight first year students (198) at one university. Quantitative data was obtained using Stress Questionnaire. Inferential analysis by use of independent t-test was used to test hypothesis. The findings indicated that there are significant gender differences in stressful experiences on academic demands, psychological and social relationship and financial difficulties among the first year university students. Therefore, this implies that Dean of students at universities should design support mechanisms to support female students in coping with stressors as new students.

    W opracowaniu przedstawiono wyniki badań opinii studentów w zakresie ich przygotowania do wymagań wyższych studiów technicznych. Wstępne badania objęły m.in. takie zagadnienia, jak: okoliczności związane z wyborem kierunku studiów, samoocena przygotowania do studiów oraz trudności, z jakimi spotkali się studenci I roku.
    The results of the research on students’ opinions regarding their preparation for the requirements of higher technical studies were presented at this article. Preliminary research included, among others, such issues as: circumstances related to the choice of the field of study, self- -assessment of preparation for studies and difficulties encountered by first-year students.

    The COVID-19 pandemic has leftits mark on higher education, including first-year university students. The transition to online education has been particularly challenging for the University of Silesia and, to a far lesser extent, the International University of Applied Sciences. This study examines the academic experiences of first-year students entering university in the academic year 2020/2021. This article presents the results of a comparative study conducted on a sample of N=185 students from the University of Silesia (Poland) and N=120 students from the University of Applied Sciences (Germany) using an online questionnaire. The research showed that German students ranked the investigated issues higher; this does not mean that the University of Silesia provides a lower level of support, but that the information strategy and support elements are different.

    There being a contradiction between the didactic systems of comprehensive school and university, university teachers have to find solution to the problem of first-year students’ didactic adaptation. The wide use of ICT in doing every university course calls for adequate teaching methods and didactic conditions for students’ efficient progress in their first year of study at university. The article provides the condition of first-year students’ didactic adaptation within the educational environment enriched with ICT on the basis of the pilot research carried out at Vinnytsia Educational and Scientific Institute of Economics of Ternopil National Economic University. Although the results of the pilot research show students’ weaknesses of use of ICT, they prove the positive impact of the educational environment enriched with ICT on first-year students’ didactic adaptation, since it increases their didactic motivation and in many ways facilitates educational activities.

    The aim of the research conducted in the academic year 2012/2013 was to diagnose the behaviour of full-time first year students of the University of Zielona Góra in relation to the requirements of a healthy lifestyle considered in this work in terms of the interest in acquiring and widening students’ knowledge on health. The author used a diagnostic survey method and collected questionnaires filled in by 352 students (including: 250 women – 71% and 102 men – 29%). Majority of the respondents (79% of all the respondents, including 80% of women and 75% of men) expressed their wish to participate in optional classes dedicated to at least one of 25 offered topics. There were two topics which were of the greatest interest both among women and men: ’First Aid in Emergency Cases’ (47% of respondents chose the topic) and ’Nutrition Hygiene and basics of Nutrition’ (38%).
    Celem badań, przeprowadzonych w roku akademickim 2012/2013, było dokonanie diagnozy zachowań studentów pierwszego roku studiów stacjonarnych Uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego wobec wymogów zdrowego stylu życia, rozpatrywanych w tej pracy w aspekcie zainteresowania uzyskiwaniem i poszerzaniem swojej wiedzy o zdrowiu. W badaniach zastosowano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego i zebrano ankiety wypełnione przez 352 studentów (w tym: 250 kobiet – 71% i 102 mężczyzn – 29%) . Większość respondentów (79% ogółu badanych, w tym: 80% kobiet i 75% mężczyzn) wyrażała zamiar udziału w zajęciach o charakterze fakultatywnym poświęconych przynajmniej jednemu z zestawu 25 oferowanych tematów. Największym zainteresowaniem, zarówno wśród kobiet, jak i mężczyzn, cieszyły się dwa tematy: „Pierwsza pomoc w nagłych wypadkach” – 47% respondentów wybrało ten temat oraz „Higiena żywienia i podstawy dietetyki” – 38%.

    The article deals with the problem of intensification of didactic adaptation of first-year students.
