    Artykuł jest próbą opisu i porównania pierwszej fali emigracji zarobkowej z końca XIX wieku i podobnej do niej drugiej fali z końca XX wieku, wzmocnionej w 2004 roku przystąpieniem Polski do Unii Europejskiej oraz wskazania różnic i podobieństw między nimi. Pierwsza fala została opisana przez ważnych pisarzy pozytywistycznych, druga przez samą siebie. Na podstawie tych tekstów autor bada takie kategorie, jak patriotyzm, ksenofobia, religijność, obyczajowość, język itp.
    The article  “The First and the Last Emigration” is an attempt to describe the differences and similarities between the first wave of economic emigration from the late nineteenth century and a similar wave from the end of the 20th century, increased in 2004 after Poland joined the European Union. On the basis of literary texts - in the first case by the main positivist writers, and in the second by numerous texts written by migrants themselves - the author examines issues such as the place and function of religion in emigrant circles, the categories of patriotism, xenophobia, tribalism, language and identity of emigrants.

    Vladimir Nabokov’s unfavourable review of Boris Poplavsky’s volume of poetry Flags becomes a starting point of presenting different ways of perceiving the world by the two artists. Their poetry reflects the vision of the world of each author. The article not only explains reasons of differences in percepting the world, which result from the authors’ youthful experiences and vicissitudes, but also states why Vladimir Nabokov, after 20 years, changed his opinion about artistic works of Boris Poplavsky.

    Since the first years before the post-revolutionary emigration („the first wave”), the problem of the special assignment given by history appeared. Authors of the emigration literature understood its mission differently, however, they did agree on this one point: the principle of artistic freedom is the underlying reason for the emigrants’ literature. Alluding to Nina Berberowa’s wellknown formula, it is not about exile, but about the mission. Spiritual values of the „mission” of the Russian diaspora are becoming a part of the national culture in contemporary times.

    The transformations in Russian satirical literature conditioned by the difficult emigration situation were reflected in the works of Arkady Averchenko, one of the most significant satirists of pre-revolutionary Russia. In his short stories created in exile, the writer showed the problems and dilemmas that his fellow-countrymen had to face abroad, mainly in Constantinople and Prague. The feeling of homelessness, loneliness and uprooting that accompanied the emigrants constantly intensified the need for self-identification in a foreign culture, which was demonstrated in manifesting their national distinctiveness, confronting new customs and idealizing the Russian past. By immortalizing the mood, spiritual life and living conditions as well as a specific metamorphosis of Russian emigrants, Averchenko did not forget about their vices. Therefore, the short stories of the emigration period, in which the writer willingly combined elements of comedy and tragedy, were saturated with self-irony, pain and bitter reflection, skillfully hidden under the mask of humour and satire.

    This article deals with the implications of Alexander Vertinsky stay in Poland in the 1920s. Literary works of this representative of the first wave of Russian emigration enjoyed great popularity in the interwar period in Poland. The singer has made numerous acquaintances in all social circles, also in the artistic milieu, which until today eagerly reaches for his repertoire. The artist recorded many of his works and composed several hits in Poland. Vertinsky was not forgotten. His music scores, records, poetry books and memoirs were also published after his death

    The aim of the article is to present The Warsaw Diary by Zinaida Gippius, published in 1969 and translated into Polish by Henryk Chłystowski (2010). Based on the analysis of Russian and Polish versions of the book, it can be concluded that Chłystowski retains in his translation four dimensions of the diary as a historical document: facts, opinions, author’s personal feelings and her subjective mentality.

    A well-known Russian bard, Alexander Vertinsky, like many other representatives of the first wave of Russian emigration, left behind his unfinished memoirs in which he writes of over two decades of homeless wandering around the world (1920-1943). During that time he stayed, among others, in many European countries, the USA and China. And it was in Shanghai in the early 1940s that the singer began to write down his reminiscences. After returning to his homeland, Vertinsky continued his literary work, which undoubtedly left its mark on the content of memoirs. Nevertheless, the leitmotif of Vertinsky’s memoirs is both the image of old Russia scented with nostalgic feelings, and of Russian emigrants embodying his homeland.

    This paper is a short history of presentation of Russian emigrant literature in Polish textbookssince the 1970s. The author emphasizes that even in the period of Marxist views the best specialistson the subject tried to overcome the pressure of the dominant ideology and to give a completethough necessarily brief analysis of the most important writers of the „first wave” of Russianemigration. In the 1990s starts the process of „rediscovery” of many unknown names in the „thirdwave” of Russian emigrant literature which have also found their way into the textbooks. Theauthor believes that the ever increasing development of scientific research in the field will result inthe appearance of a new Polish textbook which will be able to fully satisfy the students’ needs.

    The subject of analysis in this article is the poetic complex of the sea in the poetry of Galina Kuznetsova, a poet representing the “first wave” of Russian emigration. In the Olive Orchard (Олив-ковый сад, 1937), the only poetry book she published, the sea appears as a source of aesthetic sen-sations, but above all it is an impulse for existential reflections of the narrative subject, a projection of his mental states and an explanation of her artistic worldview.In the analysis of maritime themes in Kuznetsova’s poetry, Vladimir Toporov’s research was used. according to which the poetic complex of the sea is determined by the psychophysiological structure of the author of the text and is a carrier of non-poetic realities.

    The article is an analysis of the poetry of Gisella Lachman (1895–1969), poet of the “first wave” of Russian emigration, from the perspective of the poetics of space. The poet expressed her emigration experience (multiple changes of residence: Russia, Germany, Switzerland, USA) in her poems in spatial relations. They appear on different levels of the works’ morphology: in the construction of the lyrical “I”, in the organisation of the presented world, in the repertoire of motifs and the selection of poetic lexis and genre forms. Space plays a literal role in Lachman’s poetry; it is a representation of extra-literary reality, seen subjectively. It is also subject to metaphorisation, becoming a tool for expressing philosophical content. The poet creates not only a spatial model of the world, but also a spatial model of human life, which she perceives as a transit on the road to eternity.

    Khristina Krotkova is recognised as a representative of the First Wave of Russian Emigration, she was also a member of literary association “Skit”. Krotkova’s Italian Sonnets form crown of sonnets consisting of 14 poems. Only the title of the cycle concerns the Italian theme, as the crown is formally composed of English sonnets. Italian culture, architecture monuments, masterpieces of literature and painting as well as Italian nature inspired Krotkova and became the pretext to existential and epistemological deliberations.

    This article aims to look at the phenomenon of the first wave of Russian emigration through the prism of the so-called personal history. The anthropological turn in the humanities, which took place in the second half of the 20th century, contributed to an increase in the understanding of the importance of an individual and an interest in the culture of everyday life. Egodocuments play an important role in exploring these phenomena, thanks to which we learn about the specificity of everyday life of Russian emigrants and the unique inner world of an individual. Such an opportunity is offered by Alexei Gvozdinski's letters to Elizaveta Miller, who recorded in his correspondence a far from harmonious existence in the German capital of the early 1920s. The Russian émigré petrified in his letters several weeks of life in Berlin, which were mainly marked by loneliness, poverty and being lost in an unfriendly, gloomy juggernaut, in which — unlike Constantinople or Rome (earlier stops on the émigré road) — he could not see anything positive and beautiful. His perception of the city was influenced by both subjective factors and stereotypical perceptions.
    В данной статье ставится задача рассмотреть феномен первой волны русской эмиграции сквозь призму так называемой личной истории. Антропологический поворот, произошедший во второй половине ХХ века в гуманитарных науках, способствовал росту понимания значимости личности и интереса к культуре повседневности. Важную роль в изучении этих явлений играют эго-документы, благодаря которым мы узнаем одновременно о специфике повседневной жизни русских эмигрантов и неповторимом внутреннем мире личности. Такую возможность дают письма Алексея Гвоздинского Елизавете Миллер, в которых автор запечатлел далеко не гармоничное пребывание в немецкой столице начала 1920-х годов. Русский эмигрант отобразил в своих письмах несколько недель жизни в Берлине, отмеченных главным образом одиночеством, нищетой и затерянностью в недружелюбном, мрачном мегаполисе, в котором — в отличие от Константинополя или Рима (прежних остановок в его эмигрантском пути) — он не сумел увидеть ничего положительного и красивого. На его восприятие города влияли как субъективные факторы, так и стереотипные представления.
    Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu spojrzenie na fenomen pierwszej fali emigracji rosyjskiej przez pryzmat tzw. historii osobistej. Zwrot antropologiczny w naukach humanistycznych, który nastąpił w drugiej połowie XX wieku, przyczynił się do wzrostu zrozumienia znaczenia osoby prywatnej oraz zainteresowania kulturą życia codziennego. Istotną rolę w zgłębianiu tych zjawisk odgrywają egodokumenty, dzięki którym jednocześnie poznajemy specyfikę życia codziennego rosyjskich emigrantów oraz unikalny świat wewnętrzny jednostki. Taką właśnie sposobność dają listy Aleksieja Gwozdinskiego do Jelizawiety Miller, który utrwalił w swojej korespondencji dalekie od harmonijnego trwanie w niemieckiej stolicy początku lat 1920. Rosyjski emigrant spetryfikował w swoich listach kilka tygodni życia w Berlinie, które naznaczone były głównie samotnością, biedą i zagubieniem w nieprzyjaznym, ponurym molochu, w którym — w przeciwieństwie do Konstantynopola czy Rzymu (wcześniejszych przystanków na emigracyjnej drodze) — nie potrafił dostrzec nic pozytywnego i pięknego. Na jego postrzeganie miasta wpływ miały zarówno czynniki subiektywne, jak i stereotypowe wyobrażenia.

    This article aims to present the motivation behind the first-name choices of parents forming bicultural and binational families (Polish-Moldovan, Polish-Ukrainian, Polish-Belarusian, Polish-Kazakh and Polish-Russian) as well as emigrant families from Moldova, Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan living in Poland. How these names function in the social space is also described in several settings: at home, among peers and among family living both in and outside Poland. A sociolinguistic perspective allows us to draw conclusions on the relationship between name choice and the parents’ plans for acculturation. The study material was collected mainly via surveys. Additionally, observation of the participants and in-depth interviews were performed. Twenty-six families took part in the study, including 42 children. Some have more than one first name. The material studied revealed a tendency towards complete assimilation in the country of settlement and its culture. However, respondents also declared a desire and attempt to raise bilingual children as well as maintain ties to the emigrant parents’ home country and culture.

    Opis:
    The aim of this article is to analyze the narrative poem Don Juan by Nikolai Otsup – a poet of the first wave of Russian emigration. Otsup’s work is being compared with the poem The Commander’s Footsteps by Aleksandr Blok and the narrative poem Komandorov’s Footsteps by David Samoilov. The author pays attention to the similarities in poetic images, sound and colouristic symbols. Thanks to the contextualization of Otsup’s narrative poem, the author discovers a common tendency in creating the poetic image of the Commander and in the motif of revenge in the Russian poetry of the first half of the 20th century.
    Предметом интереса в данной статье является поэма Дон Жуан Николая Оцупа – поэта первой волны русской эмиграции. Поэма подвергается сравнительному анализу со стихотворением Александра Блока Шаги Командора и с поэмой Давида Самойлова Шаги Командорова. Автором делается ряд замечаний по поводу общих для поэтов образов, символов, звуковых и цветовых характеристик. Анализ выбранных стихотворений приводит автора к раскрытию общей тенденции изображения Командора и разработки мотива расплаты в русской поэзии первой половины XX столетия.

    W latach 1920-1922 ksiądz Władysław Goral, późniejszy biskup pomocniczy lubelski (1938), męczennik II wojny światowej i błogosławiony (1999), przebywał w Rzymie. Tu, na Uniwersytecie Gregoriańskim, odbył studia filozoficzne, zakończone stopniem doktora. Artykuł niniejszy jest pierwszą próbą spojrzenia na ten okres w życiu przyszłego biskupa. Autor analizuje dostępne informacje dotyczące różnych aspektów jego pobytu w Rzymie, studiów, kontaktów i znajomości. Stawia również pytania odnoszące się do znaczenia tego czasu dla formacji duchowej, intelektualnej i kulturowej księdza Gorala. W konkluzji stwierdza, że doświadczenie powszechności Kościoła, kontakt z międzynarodowym środowiskiem uczonych, ludzi kultury oraz obcowanie z wielkim dziedzictwem artystycznym Rzymu ukształtowały w znacznym stopniu osobowość przyszłego błogosławionego.
    In 1920-1922, Władysław Goral later an auxiliary Bishop of Lublin (1938), martyr of World War II and blessed (1999) stayed in Rome. There, at the Gregorian University, he completed his philosophical studies with a doctoral degree. This article is the first attempt to look at this period of the life of the future bishop. The author analyzes the available information about various aspects of his stay in Rome, studies, contacts and acquaintances. He also raises questions about the importance of this time for the spiritual, Intellectual and cultural formation of Father Goral. In conclusion, he states that the experience of the universality of the Catholic Church, contact with the international environment of scholars, people of culture, and communing with the great artistic heritage of Rome significantly shaper the personality of the future blessed.

    Настоящая статья посвящена Лидии Сеницкой (Волынцевой, 1890?-1975), поэтессе, писательнице, переводчику и литературному критику, представительнице «первой волны» русской эмиграции, которая до 1939 года жила в городе Ровно на Волыни, затем в Варшаве (1939-1964) и в США. Воспринимаемая и своими ровесниками, и современными исследователями как одна из самых интересных фигур литературы русской эмиграции в межвоенной Польше, Сеницкая в принципе забыта, а ее творчество неизвестно сегодняшним читателям. В статье предпринята попытка приблизить поэзию Сеницкой, определить ее тематику и основные свойства поэтики.
    This article concerns Lidya Senitskaya (Volyntseva, 1890?-1975), poet, writer, playwright, translator and literary critic, representative of the „first wave” of the Russian emigration, living until 1939 in Równe, then (1939-1964) in Warsaw, and later on in the USA. Considered by her contemporaries as one of the most interesting creators of the Russian diaspora in pre-war Poland, she is now regarded by contemporary researchers as an unquestionable poetic individuality. Today Senitskaya is a completely forgotten figure, and her work is unknown to the contemporary readers. The article is an attempt to present the poet’s creative silhouette, determine and discuss the subject matter and poetics of her poems.      
    Artykuł poświęcono Lidii Sienickiej (Wołyncewej, 1890?-1975), poetce, pisarce, tłumaczce i krytykowi literackiemu, przedstawicielce "pierwszej fali" emigracji rosyjskiej, mieszkającej do 1939 roku w Równem na Wołyniu, natępnie w Warszawie (1939-1964) i USA. Postrzegana przez sobie współczesnych i dzisiejszych badaczy jako jedna z najciekawszych postaci rosysjkiej emigracji w międzywojennej Polsce, Sienicka jest twórczynią niemal zupełnie zapomnianą, a jej dorobek artystyczny nieznany polskim czytelnikom. W artykule podjęto próbę przybliżenia poezji Sienickiej, omówienia jej tematyki i poetyki.

    Artykuł koncentruje się na pracy i dorobku Polskiego Funduszu Wydawniczego w Kanadzie – instytucji, która od przeszło 40 lat prężnie działa na forum kultury, wydając książki i organizując różnego rodzaju spotkania i wydarzenia, promujące literaturę polską za granicą. PFW to stowarzyszenie kształtujące życie kulturalne i literackie przede wszystkim polskiej społeczności emigracyjnej w Kanadzie. Celem artykułu jest wyodrębnienie i przedstawienie najważniejszych publikacji  poetyckich w dorobku PFW. Analizie zostały poddane głównie tomy poezji wydawane przez PFW zarówno samodzielnie, jak i w koedycji z partnerami krajowymi. Wśród nich na szczególną uwagę zasługują dwie antologie: Seven Polish Canadian Poets i Antologia poezji polskiej na obczyźnie 1939–1999 oraz wiersze „kanadyjskich kontynentczyków” (Bogdana Czaykowskiego, Floriana Śmiei i Andrzeja Buszy) czy poetów emigracji postsolidarnościowej (np. Marka Kusiby, Edwarda Zymana i Grażyny Zambrzyckiej). Przedstawiony w artykule przegląd oraz opis publikacji poetyckich, wraz z krótkim rysem historycznym, dowodzi, że PFW pełni nie tylko funkcję wydawcy, lecz także kronikarza, archiwisty, mecenasa sztuki czy wreszcie „odkrywcy” talentów poetyckich.
    In this article, Bożena Szałasta-Rogowska focuses on the work and achievements of the Polish Publishing Fund (PFW) in Canada, an institution that has been dynamically active on the cultural forum for over 40 years, publishing books and organizing various types of meetings and events promoting Polish literature abroad. PFW is an association which shapes the cultural and literary life of the Polish emigration community in Canada. Szałasta-Rogowska identifies and presentsthe most important poetic publications among the achievements of PFW. She mainly analyzes books of poetry published by PFW both independently or in cooperation with domestic partners. Among them, two anthologies deserve special attention: Seven Polish Canadian Poets and Antologia poezji polskiej na obczyźnie 1939–1999 [Anthology of Polish Poetry Abroad 1939–1999] and poems by so-called “Canadian Continenters” (Bogdan Czaykowski, Florian Śmieja and Andrzej Busza) and poets of the post-Solidarity emigration (e.g., Marek Kusiba, Edward Zyman and Grażyna Zambrzycka). This review and description of poetic publications given in this article, combined with a brief historical outline, shows that PFW is not only a publisher, but also a chronicler, an archiver, a patron of the arts and finally a “discoverer” of poetic talents.

    The changes that took place in the Polish People’s Republic after World War II were closely monitored by Polish political emigrants in Great Britain. Understandably, special attention was paid to political problems. The author discusses the attitude of the Polish government in exile and the Polish émigré press towards the elections to the People’s Poland Sejm in 1952: i.e. their assessment of the electoral law, the National Front, its programme, candidates to the Sejm, the electoral campaign, and election results. In the closing part of the text, the author comments on the success allegedly achieved by the Ministry of Public Security in that part of the “Cezary” Operation which concerned disinformation of émigré community in the area of electoral propaganda.
    Zmiany zachodzące w Polsce Ludowej po II wojnie światowej były bacznie obserwowane przez polskie uchodźstwo polityczne w Wielkiej Brytanii. Szczególną uwagę zwracano na sprawy polityczne. W artykule omówiono stosunek władz RP na obczyźnie oraz prasy emigracyjnej do wyborów do Sejmu PRL w 1952 r.: tzn. jak oceniano prawo wyborcze, Front Narodowy, jego program, kandydatów do sejmu, kampanię wyborczą oraz wyniki wyborów. W końcowej części tekstu skomentowano sukces, jaki rzekomo odniosło Ministerstwo Bezpieczeństwa Publicznego w tej części operacji „Cezary”, która dotyczyła dezinformacji środowisk emigracyjnych w zakresie propagandy wyborczej.
