This paper presents the modelling of a simultaneous multiple collision occurring between several bodies of a kinematic chain. An algorithm is proposed that when used with an elastoplastic contact model, allows the phenomena that can occur during a multiple-body collision to be taken into account. These phenomena include the transition of the collision state from the restitution phase directly to the compression phase or successive collisions occurring along the same normal. The proposed algorithm can be used with any elastoplastic contact model. This paper presents its use with a selected model in a three-body system. Numerical calculations based on the model have been verified using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The use of the proposed improved approach reduces the post-collision velocity prediction error by 2.34% compared to the baseline description of collisions known from the literature.
W artykule przedstawiono modelowanie symultanicznego zderzenia wielokrotnego zachodzącego pomiędzy kilkoma ciałami łańcucha kinematycznego. Zaproponowano algorytm, który wykorzystany z elasto-plastycznym modelem kontaktu pozwala na uwzględnienie zjawisk, które mogą wystąpić w trakcie zderzenia wielokrotnego. Do zjawisk tych zaliczyć można przejście stanu zderzenia z fazy restytucji bezpośrednio do fazy kompresji czy też kolejne zderzenia zachodzące wzdłuż tej samej normalnej. Zaproponowany algorytm może zostać wykorzystany z dowolnym, elasto-plastycznym modelem kontaktu. W artykule przedstawiono jego wykorzystanie z wybranym modelem w modelu składającym się z trzech ciał. Obliczenia numeryczne przeprowadzone na podstawie modelu zostały zweryfikowane za pomocą Metody Elementów Skończonych (MES). Zastosowanie zaproponowanego, ulepszonego podejścia pozwala na zmniejszenie błędu przewidywania prędkości po zderzeniu o 2.34% w porównaniu z opisem bazowym zderzenia znanym z literatury.

The study presents the finite element (FE) model update of the existing simple-spans steel-concrete composite bridge structure using a particle swarm optimisation (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA) approaches. The Wireless Structural Testing System (STS-WiFi) of Bridge Diagnostic, Inc. from the USA, implemented various types of sensors including: LVDT displacement sensors, intelligent strain transducers, and accelerometers that the static and dynamic historical behaviors of the bridge structure have been recorded in the field testing. One part of all field data sets has been used to calibrate the cross-sectional stiffness properties of steel girders and material of steel beams and concrete deck in the structural members including 16 master and slave variables, and that the PSO and GA optimisation methods in the MATLAB software have been developed with the new innovative tools to interface with the analytical results of the FE model in the ANSYS APDL software automatically. The vibration analysis from the dynamic responses of the structure have been conducted to extract four natural frequencies from experimental data that have been compared with the numerical natural frequencies in the FE model of the bridge through the minimum objective function of percent error to be less than 10%. In order to identify the experimental mode shapes of the structure more accurately and reliably, the discrete-time state-space model using the subspace method (N4SID) and fast Fourier transform (FFT) in MATLAB software have been applied to determine the experimental natural frequencies in which were compared with the computed natural frequencies. The main goal of the innovative approach is to determine the representative FE model of the actual bridge in which it is applied to various truck load configurations according to bridge design codes and standards. The improved methods in this document have been successfully applied to the Vietnamese steel-concrete composite bridge in which the load rating factors (RF) of the AASHTO design standards have been calculated to predict load limits, so the final updated FE model of the existing bridge is well rated with all RF values greater than 1.0. The presented approaches show great performance and the potential to implement them in industrial conditions.

This paper shows the impact of material nonlinearity of a dam-foundation rock system on seismic performance of Oued Fodda concrete gravity dam, located at northwestern side of Algeria. For the purpose, a three-dimensional dam-foundation rock system finite element model is employed in analyses. The hydrodynamic interaction between reservoir water and dam-foundation system is implicitly taken into consideration by the Westergaard approach using surface finite elements added to dam-fluid and foundation-fluid interfaces. The concrete material model is used to present the cracking of dam concrete under a seismic load the using smeared crack approach based on the Willam and Warnke failure criterion. The materially nonlinear analysis for both dam concrete and foundation rock is performed using Drucker- -Prager model. According to numerical results, tensile stresses and maximum strains reduce significantly in the materially nonlinear model. In addition, the cracking areas in the dam decrease also when material nonlinearity characteristics of the dam-foundation rock system is considered in analyses.

The Barcelona model is one of the most widespread models used in the nonlinear finite element method for simulating the real behavior of concrete. The strong robustness of this model can be attributed to two main reasons, the first one being its ability to account for the elastic stiffness degradation induced by plastic straining and the second one the aptness of considering the stiffness recovery effects under cyclic loading. This model was examined in the paper by comparing the generated stress–strain diagrams with several analytical solutions from the literature. The comparing process in the compression and tension cases with the closed-form solutions of Desayi, Krätzig, Lubliner and Thorenfeldt proved that the Barcelona model provided identical outcomes with Lubliner’s formula, which was used as the hardening function in the finite element implementation of this model. What is more, this model provided the same curves in case of the others in the ascending branches, and for the descending branch, this study proved that the outcomes of the Barcelona model are completely different from the ones of Desayi in the compression case and slightly similar to Thorenfeldt’s curves in the tension case.

The paper presents two methods of solving the problem of the dynamics of a frame structure with viscoelastic bonds in nodes. In the first approach, known from the literature, two-node beam elements with three degrees of freedom in each node were used. Exact shape functions were adopted to obtain a stiffness matrix, a consistent mass matrix and a damping matrix for the beam element. These matrices were then modified by introducing rotational viscoelastic constraints at the boundary nodes. In the second approach, a new method of modelling viscoelastic bonds in frame structures was proposed. It consists in removing rigid bonds between elements along selected degrees of freedom and replacing them with a new, additional element with viscoelastic properties. This approach allows the use of any rheological model to describe viscoelastic bonds (i.e. an additional element) without the need to create a new modified finite element. In this work, an advanced rheological model, i.e. the fractional Kelvin model, was used to describe rotational viscoelastic bonds. The use of fractional derivatives to describe the damping properties reduces the number of parameters needed in the model, but leads to a non-linear eigenproblem. In order to solve the eigenvalue problem, the continuation method was used, and the dynamic characteristics of the structure were determined on the basis of the calculated eigenvalues. Selected structures with viscoelastic nodes were analyzed and the obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Objectives The objective of this study was to develop a numerical model of the eyeball and orbit to simulate a blunt injury to the eyeball leading to its rupture, as well as to conduct a comparative analysis of the results obtained using the finite element method against the clinical material concerning patients who had suffered an eyeball rupture due to a blunt force trauma Material and Methods Using available sclera biometric and strength data, a numerical model of the eyeball, the orbital contents, and the bony walls were developed from the ground up. Then, 8 different blunt force injury scenarios were simulated. The results of numerical analyses made it possible to identify possible locations and configurations of scleral rupture. The obtained results were compared against the clinical picture of patients hospitalized at the Department of Ophtalmology, Medical University of Gdańsk in 2010–2016 due to isolated blunt force trauma to the eyeball. Results It has been demonstrated that the extent of damage observed on the numerical model that indicated a possible location of eyeball rupture did not differ from the clinically observed configurations of the scleral injuries. It has been found that the direction of the impact applied determines the location of eyeball rupture. Most often the rupture occurs at the point opposite to the clock-hour/positions of the impact application. The eyeball rupture occurs in the first 7–8 ms after the contact with the striking rigid object. It has been established that the injuries most often affected the upper sectors of the eyeball. Men are definitely more likely to sustain such injuries. Eyeball ruptures lead to significant impairment of visual acuity. Conclusions This study may contribute to a better understanding of injury mechanisms and better treatment planning. It may also contribute to the development of eyeball protection methods for employees exposed to ocular injuries.

Background: This proof of principle study aims to investigate the applicability of finite element analysis (FEA) in Oral and Maxillofacial (OMF) surgery, by studying the effect of mandibular body height and osteosynthesis positioning on unilateral mandibular body fractures based on Champy’s technique. Material and methods: Mandibles made of polyurethane foam (Synbone®), with heights of 18, 14, and 10 mm were used to create a FEA model with a unilateral straight-line fracture, fixated with a standard commercially available 6-hole 2 mm titanium miniplate. Two different FEA programs were used for the comparison, namely: Solidworks and Comsol Multiphysics. The FEA outcomes were compared with a series of mechanical tests with polymeric models fixed in a customised device and loaded onto a mechanical test bench. Results: First, the study illustrated that the optimal plate position appeared to be the upper border. Second, lower mandibular height increases instability and requires a stronger osteosynthesis system. Conclusions: FEA’s and polymeric model testing outcomes of unilateral non-comminuted fractures were highly comparable with current opinions of mandibular fracture management. The promising outcome of this study makes it worthwhile to do more extensive analysis in order to determine whether FEA alone is sufficient for optimisation of fracture management.

W roku 2020 zrealizowano prace badawcze, które miały na celu ocenę stanu konstrukcji Mostu Rędzińskiego we Wrocławiu po 10 latach eksploatacji. W ramach badań eksperckich wykonano pomiary sił w wantach mostu metodą wibracyjną, dokonano pomiarów geodezyjnych przęseł i pylonu oraz zbudowano model numeryczny. Model posłużył do oceny aktualnego stanu wytężenia elementów konstrukcji. Konieczne było przeprowadzenie aktualizacji pierwotnego modelu teoretycznego z uwagi na szereg istotnych zmian, które z upływem czasu zachodzą w konstrukcji, a które trudno precyzyjnie oszacować w trakcie projektowania. Zmiany te są efektem pełzania betonu, relaksacji stali i osiadania fundamentów. W artykule przedstawiono proces aktualizacji modelu teoretycznego mostu podwieszonego na podstawie wyników pomiarów. Uwzględniono w niej wpływ technologii budowy, pierwotny naciąg want, efekty reologiczne oraz osiadania podpór. Ostatecznie uzyskano model, w którym siły w wantach oraz trwałe deformacje przęseł i pylonu są zgodne z wartościami pomierzonymi. Potwierdzono, że w modelowaniu konstrukcji podwieszonej bardzo istotne jest precyzyjne określenie ciężaru własnego przęseł oraz sił naciągu w wantach. Niewielkie błędy w ich przyjęciu mogą skutkować dużymi błędami w wyznaczonej geometrii obiektu i siłach wewnętrznych.
In 2020, research was performed to assess the condition of the structure of the Rędziński Bridge in Wrocław after 10 years of operation. As a part of expert research, the forces in the bridge cables were measured using the vibration method, geodetic measurements of the spans and the pylons were made, and a numerical model was created. The model was used to assess the current condition of the structural elements. It was necessary to update the original theoretical model due to a number of significant changes that occur over time in the structure, and which were difficult to precisely estimate during the design. These changes are the results of concrete creep, steel relaxation and foundation subsidence. The paper presents the process of updating the theoretical model of a cable-stayed bridge on the basis of measurement results. It takes into account the influence of construction technology, the primary tension of the cables, rheological effects and subsidence of supports. Finally, a model was obtained in which the forces in the cables and the deformation of the spans and the pylon are consistent with the measured values. It was confirmed that in modelling a cable-stayed bridge, it is very important to precisely determine the dead weight of the spans and the tension forces in the cables. Small errors in their estimation may result in large errors in the determined geometry of the structure and internal forces.

Focusing on the needle and backing cloth on a tufting machine type DHG801D-200, a finite element model was built using ABAQUS/Explicit software. The tufting processes, in which the individual tufting needles and 1/10 needle modules puncture the polypropylene woven and nonwoven fabrics (hot-air bonded nonwoven and thermo-calender bonded nonwoven), were simulated, respectively. Finally, the needle forces were estimated, and the deformations and stress field distribution of the backing cloth at different times were analysed.

Opis:
The work is devoted to the diagnostics of the stress state of systems that soften the shock load on the vehicle body, the elastic element of the car suspension such as a multi-leaf spring. The construction of a mathematical model taking into account the geometric nonlinearity according to the finite element method theory is considered. Mathematical modelling was carried out to take into account the change in the stiffness matrix of the system when changing its shape. For research, a symmetrical semi-elliptical spring consisting of five leaves is used. All numerous numerical experiments were performed in two computer-aided design (CAD) systems: ANSYS, a heavy multipurpose package and SolidWorks, a middle-level multipurpose package. Computeraided design algorithms have been developed to expand the capabilities of CAD. The analysis of the results obtained allows to conclude that the traditional models of nonlinearity in ANSYS and SolidWorks give approximately the same results, which at the maximum point differ by 20.6% from the data of a full-scale experiment. When using the proposed model, this difference is reduced to 7.95%.

Finite element analysis is an essential means for bipolar plate design and the optimization of the manufacturing process. However, the accuracy of the finite element simulation is significantly affected by the constitutive model, especially the yield model. In this paper, uniaxial and biaxial tensile tests were conducted to obtain the yield loci of an ultra-thin austenite stainless steel. The Yld2000 yield model was calibrated using the yield loci under different equivalent plastic strains. The microchannel stamping experiment and its finite element simulations were conducted to study the effect of yield model parameters on the finite element simulation of bipolar plate stamping. The results show that the simulation with Yld2000 calibrated by 0.004 and 0.05 equivalent plastic strain has the best prediction accuracy for the microchannel springback and thickness distribution, respectively.

The research’s primary goal is to identify the heat source and thermal material model parameters for the numerical simulation of the laser engineered net shaping (LENS). Inconel 718 was selected as a case study for the current investigation. The LENS process’s numerical model was developed within commercial finite element software and was used as a direct problem model during the parameter identification stage. Experimental data were obtained based on a rectangular-shaped sample with thermocouples located under the based material surface. The recorded thermal profiles were used to establish a goal function for the parameter identification stage. As a result, parameters describing the melt pool geometry during the additive manufacturing, as well as thermal coefficients describing interactions between the sample material and surrounding/base material, were determined.

Opis:
Pylon mostu podwieszonego jest głównym elementem konstrukcyjnym przenoszącym niemal całe obciążenie z przęseł na fundamenty. W Moście Rędzińskim bardzo ważną rolę w pracy pylonu odgrywa rygiel dolny. Jest to żelbetowy element obciążony rozporem wynikającym z pochylenia nóg pylonu oraz reakcjami z przęseł. Jest zatem silnie rozciąganą i zginaną belką, ekscentrycznie sprężoną. Po ujawnieniu zarysowań w ryglu przystąpiono do kompleksowej oceny problemu. W artykule opisano budowę modelu numerycznego oraz wykonane obliczenia. Rezultaty obliczeń wskazały na silną zależność pomiędzy rozkładem poprzecznym reakcji z przęseł, a wytężeniem rygla. Wynika to z zastosowania sprężenia ekscentrycznego oraz trudności w precyzyjnym określeniu rozkładu sił przekazywanych przez przęsło bezpośrednio na rygiel. Podsumowaniem przeprowadzonych analiz jest propozycja wykonania dodatkowego sprężenia zewnętrznego rygla dolnego pylonu w celu podniesienia nośności oraz wydłużenia trwałości.
A pylon of the cable-stayed bridge is the crucial construction element that carries almost all loads from the span to the foundation. In the Rędziński Bridge in Wroclaw, the transverse lower beam of the pylon acts a significant role. It is a prestressed RC beam loaded by expansion forces from the tilted towers and support forces from the span. In consequence, it is the bent, tensioned element, which is eccentrically prestressed. The paper describes the building process of the numerical FEM model and conducted calculations. The analysis includes loads from the cables, support forces from the span, construction stages, concrete rheology as well as prestressing of the lower transverse beam. The results indicated the strong influence of the transverse distribution of the support forces on the effort of the transverse beam. This is due to the eccentricity of the prestressing and lack of precise determination of the support forces from the span acting directly on the transverse beam. It was concluded, that intuitive reparation by lowering support forces with increasing the cable forces could increase the effort of the beam also. In summary, it was proposed to add external prestressing of the lower transverse beam to increase its capacity and durability.

Opis:
The article analyzes the safety aspects related to the construction and operation of a mobile crane. The load-bearing capacity of the boom sub-assembly rotation node was tested in a mobile crane. When identifying the load, the uneven compliance of the supporting components was taken into account. The considerations are illustrated with an example of a mobile crane slewing bearing with a lifting capacity of 50 tons. The basic problems of building the computational model are discussed and the results of the load bearing capacity of the slewing ring bearing for different positions of the load-bearing component of the tested machine are presented. An analysis of the load of the rolling elements in a slewing ring bearing was carried out and the reasons for changes in the load capacity in relation to the methods of calculating the load capacity, assuming non-deformability of the bearing rings, were indicated. It has been shown that deformations of the supporting frames are so large that they significantly change the distribution of forces transmitted by individual bearing rollers.

Opis:
This paper is devoted to the analysis of the stability and load-carrying capacity of thin-walled composite profiles in compression. The specimens reflect elements made of carbon fibre reinforced laminate (CFRP). Thin-walled columns with a square cross-section were made from 4 layers of composite in 3 different combinations of layer arrangements. Advanced numerical analyses have been carried out. In the first stage of the study, a buckling analysis of the structure was performed. In further numerical simulations, two advanced models were used simultaneously: the Progressive Failure Analysis (PFA) and the Cohesive Zone Model (CZM). The results showed significant differences between the critical load values for each layer configuration. The forms of buckling and the areas of damage initiation and evolution were also dependent on the applied layup.
