Opis:
Research background: In the last decades social responsible investment has evolved into an important and influential investment class. What supports then the development of SRI? The neoclassical approach suggests that the attractiveness of investment should result from the risk-return relationship that is satisfying for the investor. However, the performance analysis of SRI vs. conventional investment, conducted in numerous research papers, often delivers contradictory conclusions. If financial factors could not explain the phenomenon of SRI, nonfinancial factors may have played a decisive role in the formation of modern SRI market. Purpose of the article: The purpose of this paper is to analyze financial investment performance of socially responsible vs. respective conventional indices in the periods of high, low and unidentified global risk. Therefore, a following research hypothesis was verified: SR indices perform financially better in high-risk periods than in low-risk periods. This hypothesis is justified by the assumption that, when selecting SRI, investors go by a longer investment horizon than they do when selecting other investments, not subject to such verification. Methods: Among SR indices, we chose three to compare them with their conventional counterparts: DJSI US vs. DJITR (USA), DJSI Korea vs. KOSPI (South Korea) and Respect Index vs. WIG20TR (Poland). The VIX index was used as the global measure of risk aversion. To measure the relative performance of SR and conventional indices in different risk periods, we applied risk-adjusted performance measures, including RSD, Sharpe and Treynor ratios, traditional and asymmetrical CAPM. Findings & Value added: The research shows that conventional and socially responsible indices do not differ statistically in terms of risk and return irrespective of global risk. Our research confirms that the rising, socially responsible, investment market cannot be analyzed only through the prism of simplified rational choices. Additionally, it should be analyzed in terms of moral philosophy and behavioral economics, including the psycho-social features of investors.

Opis:
The purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate relevance of global systemically important banks (G-SIBs) in the context of Polish financial sector. This aspect is often overlooked, as there are no G-SIBs based in Poland. Methodology: Abovementioned aim is fulfilled by aims of providing an overview of the international characteristics and regulation of G-SIBs, describing the interrelations between these entities and institutions operating in the Polish market, and by showing how these connections can change the financial sector in Poland both directly and indirectly. The analysis is based on international standards on G-SIBs published by the Financial Stability Board and the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, as well as on EU legal acts implementing these documents. Additional sources on the „indirect” functioning of G-SIBs in Poland encompass annual reports of the entities linked to them, management reports on their activities, as well as articles and Internet data. Results of the research: G-SIBs influence Polish financial sector in several different ways. First, G-SIB-oriented regulation and supervision has an impact on Polish entities that are linked to them. Second, even indirect presence of G-SIBs is economically significant.

Opis:
This paper is focused on the problems related to activities of systemically important banking institutions. After the global financial crisis, these institutions were held responsible for the escalation of systemic risk in the international economy. The paper analyses how both the supervision and the regulatory tools that are used in European Union countries to deal with formally identified systemically important institutions have changed. The direct goal of the paper is to identify the specific features of the new regulatory order with regard to global and other systemically important institutions that operate in the European Union. The results of the analysis indicate that the extension of the extent of supervision over activities undertaken by these institutions and the introduction of new prudential regulations, including resolution regimes, do not guarantee the security and the stability of European Union’s financial market. Keywords: global banks, systemically important financial institutions, systemic risk, banking union, Single Supervision Mechanism (SSM), European resolution regime – SRM, MREL, TLAC

Opis:
W artykule podejmuję próbę dokonania oceny dorobku społecznego nauczania Jana Pawła II, patrząc przez pryzmat wiedzy systemowej/cybernetycznej, określającej wymagania dostosowanej do Stanu Zmian i Ryzyka organizacji życia społeczno-gospodarczego. Oznaczałoby to przekształcenie współczesnej cywilizacji, opartej na zasadach socjal-darwinizmu, w Cywilizację śycia i Miłości - zgodną z wymaganiami życia w Stanie Zmian i Ryzyka. Podstawowy wniosek z tych systemowych badań dotyczy konieczności wbudowania instytucji religijnych w spójny, na wartości dobra wspólnego oparty, system społecznego rozwojowego sterowania procesem życia światowej - oraz lokalnych - społeczności. A więc ani "religia do kruchty", ani też nie "religijny fundamentalizm", lecz partnerskie obronno-rozwojowe sterownicze współdziałanie.
A new approach to religion institutions is proposed. To adopt world society to era of highly developed science and technology we ought to put away social-Darwinistic social relations and organize humans/world society on three – by John Paul II proposed – universal values: common good/common interest, solidarity and subsidiarity. For life in such State of Change and Risk we have to activate big intellectual – cognitive and innovative – currently in most cases, passive creative potential and allow access to knowledge used up to-date usually for egoistic – business and/or political – purposes. For this end we have to change work force position from “tools like” into creative one. We have also to build world information system that especially will allow to get knowledge about future complex effects of human activity. Civilization of Life and Love, proposed by John Paul II, should be treated as draft of proper long-term socioeconomy transformation that allow to adapt world society to life supported by high science and technology. To avoid global catastrophe and achieve sustainable development of the world society, it would be convenient to include strong religion institutions – for example in Poland, Catholic Church – into social homeostats that control proper process of defense and development of local and global societies. Social teaching of John Paul II should be treated – as soon as possible – as important input into Polish, European and global sustainable development strategy building.
