Broken images. "Auschwitz", nostalgia and modernity. The reception of the Holocaust in popular culture The reception of the Holocaust in popular culture is like a set of the broken images of the past. There are fluent differences between fiction and reality, beetween texts and facts, between knowledge and ignorance. This article concerns the forms of the influence of poplar culture on the representations of the Holocaust. Broken image can reveal a part of same event, the same fact. There are intellectual and axiological challenges between revealing and abusing the “Auschwitz” in the contemporary texts of culture. There are three main parts of the article: The contexts of the terms, Opened arguments and How instrumentally where are described the mechanisms of reduction, instrumentalization and mediatization of the reception of the Holocaust.

Opis:
Worldwide Walerian Borowczyk is known as a vanguard artist. In Poland, however, his works have been always divided into two categories: the “real art”, eg. his animated films made with Jan Lenica and “all the rest”, usually called “controversial” or demoralizing”, made abroad. Borowczyk’s late works (such as Immoral Tales, 1974, The Beast, 1975, or Emmanuelle V, 1987) confirmed his image of a pornographer, an iconoclast and controversial yet repetitive creator constantly shocking with (cheap) erotica. In that context, an insight on the reception of Borowczyk’s cinematic works in his homeland seems particularly interesting. An analysis of the aforementioned problem is followed by an attempt to find all the possible sources of such particular reception of the works of Walerian Borowczyk. He was a director viewed either as a pornographer or an uncompromising icon of bold film productions – the first real surrealist of Polish cinema.

Opis:
At first glance, Jon Turteltaub’s movie entitled The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010) seems to have no connections whatsoever with Greco-Roman antiquity. To find any hidden connections, we have to go back to 1797, when Johann Wolfgang Goethe published his famous ballad Der Zauberlehrling. Almost a century later, this work has inspired French composer Paul Dukas to write his masterpiece, the symphonic scherzo L’apprenti sorcier. Dukas’ music became the leitmotif of two Walt Disney movies: Fantasia (1940) and Fantasia 2000 (1999). This is where we trace the ancient roots of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice story. In 1789, a good friend of Goethe, Christopher Martin Wieland, is reported to have published the first German translation of Lucian of Samosata’s (120-180 AD) complete works, including a dialogue entitled Philopseudes (The Lover of Lies). The tenth story told in Philopseudes turned out to be very similar to the one written by Goethe and then adapted into Disney’s and Turteltaub’s movies. In my paper I try to show the transmission of the Lucianic text from antiquity to the modern film adaptations. The original Lucian’s tale, rewritten by Goethe, has proven very influential and prolific. The so-called “sorcerer’s apprentice syndrome” can be found at the root of many fantastic stories in which a human being could not control his creation (i.e. a robot) which eventually would turn against its maker. The main focus in this paper is on the evolution of the young apprentice’s story and its cinematographic life.

Opis:
The atmosphere of a big city, as well as registering the motion of the city as a symbol of modern industrial civilization, fascinated the first directors of photography at the turn of the 20th century. Some years later, the subject of the metropolis was developed by avant-garde artists. Among early cinematic images of the city, the foremost place is held by Walter Ruttmann’s 1927 film Berlin: Symphony of a Metropolis. It was the first multifaceted and comprehensive documentary picture of the city. The city is shown without any anecdote or story, without an individual hero, distinct from theatre or literature. Ruttmann shows the diversity, complexity and co-dependence of the urban organism, which becomes something of a machine in perpetual motion. Ruttmann’s film unveils the uniformity of big-city life, the unification of the imagination, expectations, needs and dreams. The world of “Berlin” is created mainly by editing. Motion – the result of artistic endeavours, together with the rhythmic order of the images, determine the artistic vision of the film as a whole. Ruttmann’s rhythmic interpretation aims at breaking the boundaries between art and non-artistic reality.

cinema in Poland during post-socialist transformation phase
Opis:
The development of VHS market in Poland can be roughly divided into two main periods: first (1980-1988) is the one when that area of pop culture first came into existence and shaped, second (1988-1992) is the "video boom" era. In the years 1980-1988 the video market developed thanks to the cunningness and resourfulness of a large number of people who succumbed to the magic of that new medium. They worked almost entirely illegally because the market was not being regulated by any legal norms and the cassettes that were being produced were of a very low quality. In the years 1988-1992 the VHS market was on a very high demand. Significant piracy-limiting legal norms were introduced and professional production and distribution companies began to play a larger role than before. Renting VHSs and watching movies on one's own TV set became a massive phenomenon. The article is an attempt to tell the unknown story of video-cassettes in Poland – methods of their dissemination, mechanisms of VHS market and influence on Polish audience.

Medialized way of perceiving and continual stuffing of reality with moving images have substantial impact on viewer’s perception, and thus on the interpretation of cinematic work. We cannot create contemporary cinema without understanding changes that the film and audiovisual audiences currently undergo. Contemporary audience has become nomadic more now than ever, and the spectator takes part in a grand spectacle that shapes their identity.

Opis:
The author examines the relationship between theatre and cinema in the context of contemporary tendency of films not as “works of art” depicting some fictitious “there and then”, but as testimonies to the experience of “living in art”. Bal in her analysis refers to the category of “liveness” proposed by Philip Auslander, according to whom historically variable dynamics of the effect of reality of the spectacle produced in viewers, decides on the feeling of “liveness”, and not the ontological classification between different forms of presenting of theatre, television and film. However, according to Auslander, filmmakers, unlike people working in television and the new media, failed to colonise “liveness”, as the question of repetition and the time gap between the act of creation of film and the time of its reception stood in their way. Referring to the historical and contemporary collection of testimonies of the reception of Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975), directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, and the way body is shown in the film, the author questions the last thesis of Auslander and shows that even in the reception of a film, the difference between “picture” treated as a work of art and direct and immediate event touching the viewers here and now is blurred, and that because of that also film can produce the effect of “liveness”.

Screenplay is a multifunctional project written by screenwriter or screenwriters for preparing next phases of film production. Changing and many times transformed forms of screenplay belong to the nature of screenwriting. Literary vision of film changes several times being result of synergy and typical work in progress: from general idea and high concept, through story, treatment, scalette, first draft and certain number of drafts, to final draft, director’s draft and shooting script. Marek Hendrykowski’s study describes and explains these terms as forms of literary film creation in three complementary aspects: creative re-vision, rewriting and remodeling.

Opis:
This paper highlights the main issues concerned with competences necessary for the documentary film reception. The main purpose of this article is to investigate pedagogy students’ (specialization: social-cultural animation) understanding of documentary films on the basis of their narration and to define the basic competences in film understanding. According to the thesis, competences for proper film reception require general knowledge which enables individuals to make choices, understanding conventions, contexts and interdependences. Research focuses on the reception of Polish documentary films created before the political changes in 1989. The analysis of results and final conclusions are based on Umberto Eco’s and Francesco Casetti’s theoretical concept of the text assumptions. The study has confirmed assumptions presented above and justified the following conclusion: documentary film is a text based on the specific competence of the spectator but also contributes to the formation of certain competence. The film text makes the spectator capable of actualizing the various meaning-contents and the role of the spectator is to update his knowledge while receiving documentary film. The textual cooperation gives the spectator an essential role in the process of creating meaning.

Opis:
This article illustrates the critical reception of Soava Gallone, born Stanislava Winawer, according to Italian movie magazines between 1915 and 1925. The career of the Polish actress, who settled in Italy in 1911, developed especially during the golden age of the “Diva-Film”, a proper Italian film genre that focuses attention on female roles and on the characters that they play, of Symbolist and Dannunzian derivation. The actress’ approach to her craft was a far cry from the canons of the “divas” of that time, who were characterised by languid gazes and mannered poses. While Lyda Borelli, Francesca Bertini, Pina Menechelli played mainly “femmes fatales”, Soava Gallone preferred more reassuring characters whose seductive implications were often derived from the cruelty of the male characters. In Avatar (Carmine Gallone, 1915), Gallone played a loyal wife; in Senza Colpa! (Carmine Gallone, 1915), she played an innocent woman forced to defend herself from an attempted rape with homicide; in La Chiamavano Cosetta (Eugenio Perego, 1917), she portrayed a woman pushed to false desires for luxury and wrongful wishes, having been ripped from her simple world. Finally, in Il Bacio di Cyrano (1919), Maman Poupée (1919), Amleto e il Suo Clown (1920) and Marcella (1921), she consistently portrayed the same type of character: a gentle woman with angelic features. Even the public image she tried to build for herself was that of a reassuring, smart and cultured woman. The photographs depicting her never showed her in poses as seductive as those of Menechelli or Bertini, and for the majority of the columnists of the Italian press of those years, Soava Gallone was described as “the pale blonde creature”, “the beautiful, simple and spontaneous [one]”, the “gentle and pleasing interpreter”.

The selection of directors aimed to show the image of a young from different time’s and generation’s perspectives. It made possible to select main tendencies connected with a young stage of life over years. At the beginning the text recalls the work of one of the so called Cinema of moral anxiety’s creators – Krzysztof Zanussi. The content shown in his movies, such as is Illumination, shows the image of young intellectuals. Their contemporary generation identified themselves with this group, looking for the truth and the sense of life in a mendacious reality of communist Poland. The fact that the Zanussi observation are still up‑to‑date is confirmed in Sala samobójców by a director that belongs to a young generation of moviemakers – Jan Komasa, who depicted the nowadays teenagers. The movie shows that the form of youthful quests changed in a significant manner, and that together with a changing world, new dangers appeared.

Opis:
The text discusses the issue of film reception and psychological mechanisms governing it. The main assumption is that the basis of film reception is active and rational creation of meanings combined with bodily experience and emotions. All those aspects – the cognitive, the somatic and the emotional one – form a psychological whole, but simultaneously they are always individualised. They should be analysed with reference to a particular viewer/user and their existential context and cultural protocols should be taken into consideration.reception; film; body; emotions; mind
