In this essay I want to focus on Jean-François Lyotard’s interpretation of Marcel Duchamp’s “The Large Glass” which I confront with Duchamp’s idea of pictorial nominalism. I invoke the main thesis from Lyotard’s important essay “Freud selon Cézanne,” to draw a line between Lyotard’s analysis of artistic experience of space in Cézanne’s work and the topological conceptuality traced by Lyotard in spatial relations within Duchamp’s “The Large Glass.” I want to show that the concept of “transformation” that is introduced in Lyotard’s interpretation of Duchamp’s works, operates within certain spatial analysis which lays the foundations for philosophical analysis in situ, or, as Lyotard writes, “topological politics.” For Lyotard this is the exact context to proceed the meditation of transformational potential hidden within the idea of presentation and representation of the space that becomes visible when one starts to notice incongruences as well as congruences.

The article gives a brief understanding of the metaphor within the modern theory of conceptual metaphor, as well as puts forward arguments substantiating semantic, syntactic and structural differences between the metaphor and the comparison. This is indeed important for the study of the figurative system of the Old Testament, since in translation many metaphors are given in the form of comparison. At the root of any metaphor lies the sense of analogy, which makes one look for links between most distant entities and not just between objects of the sensually perceived world, but also between concrete objects and abstract notions. A systematic analysis of the metaphor (based on texts of the modern Russian language) has shown that such links are formed in strictly defined directions. Moreover, they are countable and quite concrete as in the following pairs: object→object; object→man; object→physical world; object→psychic world; object→social world; object→abstraction; animal→man; man→man; physical world→psychic world. The extensive material analyzed in the article demonstrates that the Psalter, with all its semantic and stylistic sophistication and remoteness of biblical notions from modern ones, makes use of the same laws of metaphorization as we do today except for one crucial circumstance: anthropocentricity of the modern times is substituted with theocentrism, thus making the central object of the metaphor not man, as in modern languages, but God: But You, O LORD, are a shield for me; His wrath is kindled; Grace is poured upon Your lips; It is God who arms me with strength; The LORD my God will enlighten my darkness and so on.

Figurative language has been the subject of interdisciplinary research for ages. It is considered by philosophers, linguists, as well as psychologists and pedagogues. The forms of figurative languages include for example., metaphors, proverbs, phrasemes and oxymorons. The metaphoric language is deeply in human’ experience and it is used unconsciously in everyday situations. Lakoff and Johnson (1988) stress that metaphors are a showcase for man: “Show me your metaphors, and I tell you who you are”. This quote very well highlights the omnipresence of the metaphorical language in human life. The article discusses the notion of figurative language and its forms. Moreover, the subject of the description is three the most popular forms of metaphorical language: metaphor, proverb and phraseological. In addition, the problem of figurative language in school education is emphasized at every level of education.

The focal issue of the present paper is the conventional periphrasis as an object of contrastive research. Such expressions may have different cross-linguistic equivalents, including full, partial, parallel and zero counterparts. The present paper aims to discuss Polish periphrastic expressions and their Croatian equivalents in order to determine and analyze the relations between the units in question. The Polish units (165) are lexicographically attested, while their Croatian counterparts have been determined on the basis of dictionaries, corpora and interviews with native speakers of the Croatian language. The conventional periphrasis have not been researched from this perspective and the results may be useful for Polish-Croatian lexicography. The study shows that zero equivalents constitute the biggest group (91), followed by full equivalents (61) with significantly less numerous groups of partial and parallel counterparts (respectively: 5 and 8).

Le présent article aborde l’analyse de la persuasion argumentative et de la figuralité dans le discours en rapport avec le lobbying. Pour être convaincant face à leurs interlocuteurs, le lobbying utilise des techniques linguistiques afin de servir leurs intérêts. De son côté, l’opinion publique se sert de ces mêmes techniques langagières afin de dénoncer les activités du lobbying. Ces techniques langagières sont la persuasion et la figuralité, et elles ont pour objectif d’embellir, de critiquer ou d’atténuer le discours, en fonction de la perspective de l’émetteur. Cela permet aussi de caractériser, d’une part, la culture sociale d’une zone géographique déterminée, et de l’autre, le rôle du lobby dans cette société et l’image publique que ce dernier renvoie. C’est dans cette optique d’argumentativité que l’article offre une approche de ces stratégies discursives, par le biais d’écrits scientifiques et médiatiques.
This article discusses the analysis of argumentative persuasion and figurative language in a discourse related to lobbying. To be convincing to their interlocutors, lobbying uses linguistic techniques to serve their interests. For its part, public opinion uses these same language techniques to denounce lobbying activities. These language techniques include persuasion and figurative language. They aim to gild, criticise, or tone down the discourse, depending on the issuer’s perspective. This also makes it possible to characterise, on the one hand, the social culture of a specific geographical area and, on the other hand, the role of the lobby in this society as well as the public image that it reflects. It is in this perspective of argumentativeness that the article offers a report of these discursive strategies through scientific and media writings, such as blogs and dedicated websites on lobbying.

Opis:
Chinese calligraphy is one of the most important Chinese arts: a form of entertainment as well as an embodiment of figurative thinking. In this paper, a statistical model-based approach to generating new styles of Chinese character strokes is proposed. Original calligraphy samples are aligned in a common co-ordinate frame and a training set consisting of landmarks is generated semi-automatically. The most significant features of the training set are extracted and a statistical model is built in order to generate strokes in new styles. The Bezier curve is used to fit the discrete contour data.

Ziel des Beitrags ist festzustellen, welche Aspekte von Geschmackseindrücken auf wörtliche und welche auf figurative Art und Weise zum Ausdruck gebracht werden. Zunächst liegt die Aufmerksamkeit auf den philosophischen, erkenntnistheoretischen und neurophysiologischen Fragestellungen im gustatorischen Bereich. Dies führt zu der Schlussfolgerung, dass der Geschmackssinn auf zweierlei Art und Weise betrachtet werden kann: der Geschmack im engeren und im weiteren Sinne. Darauf folgt die Herausstellung des semantischen Rahmens für die gustatorische Wahrnehmung, wobei das Hauptaugenmerk auf die drei grundlegenden Wahrnehmungsparameter gelegt wird – die hedonische Valenz, Intensität und Qualität. Der empirische Teil zeigt auf der Basis der adjektivischen Kookkurrenzen mit den Lexemen Geschmack und smak in deutschen und polnischen Korpora, wie die oben genannten Parameter versprachlicht werden. Hier stellen sich in diesen drei Wahrnehmungsbereichen zusätzliche Untergruppen heraus.
The paper aims to show which aspects of gustatory perception are talked about literally and/or figuratively. First, attention has been paid to philosophical, epistemological and neurophysiological issues of taste perception. This led to the conclusion that the sense of taste should be viewed in two ways: taste in the narrow (taste) and wide (flavour) sense. Subsequently, the gustatory perception frame has been established, whereas attention has been especially drawn to the three fundamental perceptual parameters – hedonic value, intensity and quality. The empirical part of the paper shows based on the analysis of the adjectival cooccurrences of the lexemes Geschmack and smak in German and Polish corpora, how the above-mentioned parameters can be talked about whereas they have been further divided into additional subgroups.

Figurative language refers to words, and groups of words, that exaggerate or alter the usual meanings of the component words. Figurative language may involve analogy to similar concepts or other contexts, and may involve exaggerations. Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, we are using figurative language. By using figurative language, writers can evoke emotion and imagery from their writing that literal language just cannot provide. By doing so, figurative language makes expressing meaning through writing easier and more relatable to the reader. For many people, figurative language is a mean of poets or writers, in other words, creative people. Just a few people are aware of the fact that we actually use metaphorical expressions every day. It depends on the view everybody has what someone thinks about it. The aim of this paper is to show that figurative language is omnipresent in our every day language and that we are using it almost constantly, maybe unconsciously.

The article emphasizes the fact that in Ukrainian linguistics, the status of historical stylistics is not yet fully defined. The basic reason for it is that this field of study combines two perspectives – the historical one (the connection with the history of the literary language) and the functional with the axiological (the subject of linguistic style). The very idea of the study of the formation and diachronic dynamics, the development of emotionally expressive, cognitive properties of those groups of vocabulary, phraseology, grammatical units, and specific genre-style varieties of texts is not new. It is noted that the transition from the history of Ukrainian literary language to historical stylistics in terms of knowledge of the circumstances of the history and socio-cultural life of Ukrainians through texts greatly extends the idea of their dynamics. In the article, the differentiation of several directions of historical stylistics is proposed: axiological (the theory of synonymic series), conceptual-sign (the theory of a linguistic sign, the philosophy of the linguistic sign of the modern text), genrestyle, individual authors’ stylistics (linguopersonology), sociolinguistic with stylistics, and codification lexicographic. As a result, it is emphasised that the construction of a holistic conception of the history of the Ukrainian literary language is impossible without the experience of historical stylistics as a direction of general linguistics, which, in the process of its methodological development, provides broad material for modelling the dynamics of the national linguistic culture.

The article presents special methodology for developing figurative speech, which has a compensatory value among primary schoolchildren, with reduced vision. The complexity of the figurative speech understanding process and the need for developing it among visually impaired children was specified by the scientists, Litvak (2006), Sineva (2008), Fedorenko (2015). The principles (general didactic, linguo-didactic, and special) and the main tasks for developing and correcting each figurative speech component among younger vision-impaired learners are defined as follows: cognitive (development of the visual-figurative basis of speech); emotional (the development of speech expressiveness and the emotional-sensory sphere) and creative-practical (formation of skills and abilities for using the exponents of imagery in speech proficiently, the development of skills for active work with words). The directions of correctional work for each figurative speech component are described. The results obtained by implementing the experimental method indicated positive dynamism in figurative speech development among younger vision-impaired learners in the experimental classes for all the components established in the experimental study, pointing to the effectiveness of the proposed work method on their formation and correction. It was stated that vision impaired children are able to understand and explain the essence of imagery expression, which is available to pupils of primary school age; expressively read and talk about their feelings and emotions from the read literary text; use the means of imagery in their own speech consciously and appropriately, with special pedagogical guidance.

The aim of the present paper is to discuss the new Polish faunal lexical and phraseological units from a cross-linguistic perspective. The research corpus is compiled on the basis of Obserwatorium Językowe Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego (the Language Observatory of the University of Warsaw) – an online source containing the items which are in use and which have not been included in dictionaries so far. The English equivalents allocated for these units are analysed and divided intofour groups: quasi-absolute, partial, parallel and zero counterparts.
