Opis:
An ultrasonic sensor based on extrinsic Fabry–Pérot interference (EFPI) has been designed and demonstrated to detect the ultrasonic wave signal. The sensitivity and natural frequency of fiber Fabry–Pérot (F-P) sensor with different structure parameter have been simulated by COMSOL. The simulation results illustrate that the sensitivity is up to 1.737 nm/kPa and the natural frequency is 2.1 MHz, when the silica diaphragm thickness is 2 μm, the radius is 90 μm, and the cavity length is 18 μm. The most suitable parameters have been selected and the F-P sensor has been fabricated. When the ultrasonic signals with the frequencies of 40 kHz and 1.2 MHz are respectively applied to the sensor, the frequencies detected by the EFPI ultrasonic sensor are 39 kHz and 1.21 MHz based on a partial discharge detection experiment for the designed demodulation system. The experimental results show that the sensor can accurately detect ultrasonic signals. As an excellent platform for ultrasonic signal sensing, this EFPI ultrasonic sensing system has great potential applications in partial discharge detection field.

Opis:
W nowoczesnych konstrukcjach ziemnych (nasypy drogowe i kolejowe, tamy i zapory), do powszechnego sposobu postępowania należy umieszczanie wewnątrz tych konstrukcji geosyntetyków w postaci tkanin i siatek.
In modern earthwork structures (roads and railway embankments, dikes and dams), it is common procedure to embed geosynthetics like non-woven and grid structures into their soil bodies. These geosynthetic materials act as filters, reinforcement and drainage elements. They are also integrated for strengthening of the earthwork structures and prevention from surface erosion. By incorporating sensors in the geotextiles, "smart" technical textiles can be realised. Such multifunctional technical textiles can interact with their environment and sense various measurement categories such as temperature, strain and chemical parameters which allow to detect and to locate the presence of any damages and destructions in real time. In comparison with traditional measuring systems (pressure cells, piezometers and inclinometers which produce only point measurements) fibre optic sensors are well suited for mentioned spatial distributed monitoring purposes. The very tiny optical fibres of a diameter of less then 1 mm can operate as sensors in strong electromagnetic fields, under "harsh" explosive and chemical environments and under ionizing radiation. The spatial distributed fibre optic sensors are based on Brillouin scattering in glass optical fibres and on optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) in polymer optical fibres. The paper gives an overview of these innovative fibre optic sensors embedded in geosynthetics and presents field test results.

Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) systems are designed for weighing vehicles driving across a measurement site. Because during measurements the vehicle has to come in physical contact with the components of the system, WIM systems always use built-in sensors installed in road pavement. Each WIM system consists of force sensors placed in one, two or even several lines, perpendicular to the direction of traffic. The idea behind WIM systems is to measure the dynamic loads that the wheels of a moving vehicle exert on the road surface and, on this basis, to estimate static wheel loads as well as gross vehicle weight.

Opis:
A compact temperature measuring device using a weakly coupled multi-core fibre in the Michelson interferometer structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The device is manufactured by an easy and simple splicing approach which consists of a multi-core fibre segment and an in-fibre coupler. In-fibre coupler is made of a cascaded single-mode fibre and multi-core fibre balls. It enhances the interference phenomenon of light nergy between the central core and the outer cores of a multi-core fibre. The sensor shows a high quality fringe visibility of about 14–18 dB in the wavelength spectrum. Multi-core structure presents multi-path interferences and exhibits a maximum temperature sensitivity of 70.6 pm/°C in the range of 20–90°C with an insensitive response to the refractive index in the range of 1.334 to 1.354. The device has the advantages of compact size, easy manufacturing, and it solves cross-sensitivity between temperature and refractive index making it an authentic real-time temperature monitoring solution.

Opis:
The article presents a study of a hybrid structure based on the combination of a tapered optical fibre and gold nanoparticles dispersed in a liquid crystal material. Sensitivity to changes of the refractive index of the environment in which the structure is located, as well as the possibility of changing the refractive index of liquid crystals by external factors, such as temperature and electric field, were investigated. Electro- and thermally-induced changes of the refractive index of a liquid crystal through the rotation of a molecule director, which cause changes in the light propagated in a tapered optical fibre, were described. The most important issue in the article is to determine the influence of doping a liquid crystal with gold nanoparticles the concentration of which varies between 0.1 and 0.3 wt.%. The paper presents transmission measurements in a wide optical range depending on voltage, temperature, and frequency changes. Additionally, time courses of the obtained signal were measured. The study shows that the appropriate selection of nanoparticle concentration has a huge impact on the optical wave propagation. The experimental results show that the optical changes obtained for the investigated hybrid structure prefer it for use as an electrooptical switcher, filter, or sensor.

Progress in UV treatment applications requires new compact and sensor constructions. In the paper a hybrid (organic-inorganic) rare-earth-based polymeric UV sensor construction is proposed. The efficient luminescence of poly(methyl) methacrylate (PMMA) matrix doped by europium was used for testing the optical sensor (optrode) construction. The europium complex assures effective luminescence in the visible range with well determined multi-peak spectrum emission enabling construction of the optrode. The fabricated UV optical fibre sensor was used for determination of Nd:YAG laser intensity measurements at the third harmonic (355 nm) in the radiation power range 5.0-34.0 mW. The multi-peak luminescence spectrum was used for optimization of the measurement formula. The composition of luminescent peak intensity enables to increase the slope of sensitivity up to -2.8 mW-1. The obtained results and advantages of the optical fibre construction enable to apply it in numerous UV detection systems.

Opis:
Real-time monitoring of deformation of large structure parts is of great significance and the deformation of such structure parts is often accompanied with the change of curvature. The curvature can be obtained by measuring changes of strain, surface curve and modal displacement of the structure. However, many factors are faced with difficulty in measurement and low sensitivity at a small deformation level. In order to measure curvature in an effective way, a novel fibre Bragg grating (FBG) curvature sensor is proposed, which aims at removing the deficiencies of traditional methods in low precision and narrow adjusting. The sensor combines two FBGs with a specific structure of stainless steel elastomer. The elastomer can transfer the strain of the structure part to the FBG and then the FBG measures the strain to obtain the curvature. The performed simulation and experiment show that the sensor can effectively amplify the strain to the FBG through the unique structure of the elastomer, and the accuracy of the sensor used in the experiment is increased by 14% compared with that of the FBG used for direct measurement.

This paper reports on examination of the latest generation of telecom optical fibers for the Brillouin backscattering strain sensor application. Over 30 fibers from 5 different manufactures have been tested in terms of their ability to create a stable and accurate strain sensor. It has been proved that fibers that belong to the same standard, according to ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union), and even if provided by one manufacturer, demonstrate fundamentally different Brillouin backscattering response. It has been shown that unimodal Brillouin spectrum cannot be treated as the main parameter for fiber selection. In order to achieve accurate and reproducible results of strain measurement, it is necessary to perform initial examination of the fibers over the range of laser pulse width.

Powoduje to zmiany poziomu reflektancji w głowicy pomiarowej.
The paper presents construction and results of measurements of a reflectometric temperature sensor. The examined sensor head was located at the measurement path end. Operation of the sensor is based on changes of the refractive index value with temperature. Such sensors enable measuring under difficult conditions (places hard to reach, electromagnetic fields, humidity, vibrations). Use of the optical time-domain reflectometer enables distributed and multi-point measurements. This sensor works in reflection mode. The measuring head was located at the end of a 100 and 300 meter fibre optic line. Experiments were carried out for the 1300 nm optical wave with use of OTDR (Wandel & Goltermann GmbH typ OFT-30 Optical Fiber Tester). The reflectometric function of the measured fibre optic path is shown in Fig. 4, while the characteristic of the designed temperature sensor is presented in Fig. 5. Changes of the examined sensor power level go up to 5.5 dB at the temperature variations from 20 to 1250C. It is 20% of the examined reflectivity. The research was conducted in the Bialystok University of Technology within the framework of Subject S/WE/2/08.

Fibre sensors, mainly due to their numerous advantages (including among the others, small dimension and weight) allow for carrying out measurements in areas with limited accessibility. They do not generate and are not sensitive to external electromagnetic fields and support distributed, multi-point and multi-quantity measurements. They find increasingly common applications in everyday life. Fibre sensors allow for construction of sensor networks and while they do not cause scintillation, they are ideal for operation in the flammable and explosive environments. Measuring heads of the sensors use the following phenomena: bending losses, the disturbance of total internal reflection and changes in the transmission in optical fibre connector. Such networks enable the measurement of the same parameter in many points or different parameters in one fibre optic path. This work elaborates on the construction, the principle of operation and research results for micro bend fibre loop measuring heads manufactured in two versions with changes in the bend radius as well as for a two-state head, along with a sensor network realized with the use of the two-state heads. The remainder of this work presents the construction and the research results for fibre optic fire alarm network and level liquid sensor.

Opis:
Vibration is a ubiquitous phenomenon that occurs in everyday life and people are exposed to it almost all the time. Most often, vibration is measured using electromechanical devices such as piezoelectric, piezoresistive, or capacitive accelerometers. However, attention should be paid to the limitations of such vibration sensors. They cannot operate in the presence of strong electromagnetic fields. Measurements with electromechanical devices require physical contact between the sensor and the vibrating object, which is not always possible due to the design of the sensor and device. The possibility of a non-contact vibration measurement in harsh environments is provided by the technology of interferometric fibre optic sensors. This paper reports the principle of operation, design aspects, experimentation, and performance of a Mach-Zehnder interferometric setup for the measurement of vibration frequency. There are different sensing arms implemented in the interferometer: single-mode, polarization-maintaining, and tapered optical fibre. The paper emphasises the simplicity of the set-up structure and the detection capabilities based on the interferometric sensing giving the possibility of constructing a commercial vibration sensor for all industry demands.
