Opis:
This article proposes an unequivocal method of labeling and numbering the cladding modes propagating in single-mode optical waveguides with tilted periodic structures. The unambiguous determination of individual propagating modes in this type of optical fiber is crucial for their use in sensory systems. The selection of the appropriate spectral range and mode determines the sensitivity and measuring range of tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) sensors. The measurement methods proposed by individual research teams using TFBGs as transducers are usually based on the selection of specific modes. Unification of the labeling of modes and their numbering enables comparison of the basic metrological parameters of individual measurement methods and reproduction and verification of the proposed sensors and methods in the laboratories of other scientific and research centers.

Opis:
The article shows the possibility of using TFBG gratings to measure the radius of curvature of fiber bending in conditions of variable polarization of the introduced light. Most of the modern, stable light sources generate light with a high degree of polarization. Due to the spatial asymmetry, the direction of the light polarization plane affects the spectral parameters of individual modes. For this reason, in the measurement systems using TFBGs presented so far it becomes necessary to determine and control the state of light polarization directly in front of the periodic structure. The article presents the determined spectral parameters of the cladding modes which allow bending measurements regardless of the direction of polarization of the introduced light. Thanks to this, the measuring system can be constructed without providing control of the introduced light polarization angle, which makes its construction simpler. When using TFBGs with an angle of 2°, the accuracy of determining the bending radius in the range from 15 mm to 30 mm when changing the angle of the plane of polarization in the full range is 0.318 mm in the case of changes in the transmission coefficient. For changes in the wavelength of the selected cladding mode, the accuracy is 0.3203 mm, with the input light polarization being changed in the range from 0° (P type) to 90° (S type).

Consumers require high-speed data transmission for different activities, such as smartphone usage, live broadcasting of news, and video conferencing. Therefore, a reliable communication network is needed to provide this kind of service to users. Fiber to the home (FTTH) is an optical fiber architecture that uses fiber cables in the access network for direct and final connection to homes or offices of customers. Networks based on FTTH can offer high performance, speed, and quality. An optical fiber communication system based on FTTH device ingress network using gigabit passive optical networks (GPONs) with fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and optical amplifier is designed and analyzed in this study. The developed design based on the FTTH device and FBG shows a low bit error rate (BER) for downstream and upstream configurations with an optical fiber length of 20 km. Downstream and upstream configurations achieve a Q-factor of 89.5 and 181.3, respectively. Achievable sensitivity of the developed system is −28 dBm, while the received signal based on OptiSystem is −25.59 dBm. FTTH with FBG will play a major role in the future and provide effective solutions for a wide variety of applications in network communication systems and data transmission rates.

The article presents an analysis of the impact of bending optical fibers with tilted Bragg gratings on their spectral parameters. This article proves that it is possible to a choose TFBG cladding mode and the optical spectrum range related to it that allows the best metrological properties to be obtained when measuring bend. The results contained in the paper explain why the minima in the spectral characteristics, corresponding only to some cladding modes, change their shape during TFBG bending, which is important for application of Bragg gratings as bending sensors. It has been presented that in the case of TFBG we are able to aggregate the knowledge obtained during experiment to the form of a physical model of the fiber bending sensor.

This paper presents a simulation study of the simultaneous reconstruction of the non-smooth strain distribution of an optical fiber Bragg grating and its temperature, which is based on the reflection spectrum of the reflected beam of the grating. The transition matrix method was used to model the reflection spectrum of the grating, and the nonlinear NelderMead optimization method was used to simultaneously reconstruct the strain distribution along the grating and its temperature. The results of simulations of simultaneous reconstruction of the strain profile and temperature indicate good accord with the strain profiles and temperature set. The reconstruction errors of the strain profiles are less than 1.2 percent and the temperature change errors are less than 0.2 percent, with a noise level of 5 percent.

Opis:
A novel technology for the simultaneous and independent measurement of dual parameters is proposed and experimented. By using a single fiber Bragg grating half-pasted by 1C-LV epoxy under different curing conditions, the sensor structure is designed such that the reflective single-peak spectrum splits into a twin-peak spectrum, which makes the FBG spectrum form a natural spectral peak splitting bias. A measurement limitation exists in the FBG sensor packaging at room temperature, which can be solved by the high-temperature cured packaging method. To verify the validity of the theory and methodology, the experimental system is used. In the range from –1000 to +1000 με and from 35 to 75°C, the Bragg wavelength change is relative linear to the strain and temperature. The temperature and strain variations can be independently and simultaneously measured using the split peak, and the deviations of the FBG sensor are ±1°C and ±5 με, respectively. This single FBG sensor can realize dual-parameter measurement, which is valuable for narrow-space health monitoring.

The researchpresents the analysis of the influence of the glue connection on the measurement of elongation of stainless steel and aluminum samples by means of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with uniform fibers used as a measuring transducer.Research indicates two possible factors affecting the deformation of the transmission spectrum obtained during elongation measurement. One of them is the type of adhesive that is used to make the connection between the fiber Bragg grating and the tested sample. The second possible factor is method of connection's execution. The need for research on glue connection resulted from the formation of defects mainly in the form of numerous side bands visible in the transmission spectrum during the measurement of elongations. The test results were presented in the form of graphs obtained on the basis of transmission characteristic.

Monitoring the stress change of bolt and knowing the anchoring condition in a reasonable and effective way, accurately, can effectively prevent tunnel accident from breaking out. The stress of rock mass around the roadway is usually transferred to the anchor rod in the form of axial load, so it is of great significance to study the axial load of the bolt. In this paper, a full size anchoring and drawing experiment system was designed and established, innovatively, which realized the pull-out test of 2.5 m prestressed end Anchorage and the full-length Anchorage by using the new resin anchorage agent under vertical and horizontal loads. Through the application of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing technology to the test of full-scale anchor rod, the axial force distribution characteristics of the end Anchorage and the full-length Anchorage anchor rod were obtained under the action of pre-tightening torque and confining rock pressure. The comparison indicates that the proportion of high stress range accounts for only 17.5% and the main bearing range is near the thread end of anchor rod, the proportion of main bearing range of end Anchorage is 83.3%, and the feasibility of FBG force-measuring anchor rod is verified in the field. The research results have certain reference value.

The paper presents the use of fiber optic FBG strain sensors for analysis of deformations of machines and devices including those used in mining techniques. FBG strain sensors have many advantages over classic strain measurements using electro resistance strain gauges. They are characterized by a significant measurement accuracy of up to 1 mm, a service life of up to 30 years, the possibility of measuring large deformations of up to 8%, significant fatigue life, the possibility of building measurement networks and, something extremely important in mining – intrinsic safety, because the operating medium is white light. The entire measurement system based on the optical interrogator was also discussed. It enables conducting both static and dynamic measurements. The results of the strain research for an engineering machine, in which the loads had exceeded 800 T, were reported.

In this article, we study tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) with tilt angles of 6°and 8°, their transmission spectra, and spectral parameters that have a linear dependence on the refractive index of the environment. It is shown that there can be several such characteristics, such as the minimum, width and energy of the spectrum. The linear dependence of the spectrum width on the refractive index does not depend on the tilt angle. The linear dependence of the spectrum minimum is only observed for a tilt angle of 8°. The results of this work can be used to create a sensor system based on an optical fiber.

Both transmitted and reflected spectra for SFBG were investigated in a constant temperature (room temperature). Data that archived by Spectrometer & Detector was analyzed. In the same circumstances, a set of equations considered to simulate the experimental configuration. The SFBG spectrum characterized by important parameters: Bragg wavelength, bandwidth and efficiency. Bragg wavelength is very popular and has been used by the researchers to determine the physical quantities, it represent the reflected wavelength which satisfy Bragg condition. The behavior of these spectral parameters are presented and studied in this paper. The effect of grating region on the bandwidth and efficiency of SFBG was also studied. The SFBG has been found worked as a filter for the laser source wavelengths, which is used. Furthermore, this special FBG can be developed to optimize a sensor for temperature and pressure.
