Opis:
The connection between fertility of parents and their children has been investigated many times over the past century. It seems to be insignificant among pre-transitional populations, but becomes more important over time, especially in developed countries. Following Pearson’s example, it was widely adopted to use simple correlation analyses in such studies. In this study we will present how to use more advanced statistical models and methods to determine the occurrence and strength of examined relationships. Thus, we aim to investigate the intergenerational transmission of fertility in contemporary populations (in the case of the motherdaughter relation in Austria) using the zero-inflated Poisson regression model. Using this model in fertility analysis allows us to treat childlessness as a qualitatively different state with possibly different determinants than parenthood (regardless of the number of children). Bayesian inference in this study enables us to obtain covariates’ distributions as well as distributions of covariates’ nonlinear functions (including their uncertainty) and allows us to incorporate our prior knowledge.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present the types of fertility patterns that characterise European countries and their NUTS-1 units in the early 21st c. and in the near future. The types of fertility patterns were defined by ordering six five-year age groups of women aged from 15 to 44 years, according to the groups’ fertility rates (from the highest to the lowest). The analysis resulted in the creation of 14 different types of fertility patterns. Countries located in the same European region tend to have the same or similar type of fertility pattern. In most European countries, the postponement transition can be observed, and it will probably continue in the future. Differences between the fertility rates of the age groups were assessed within countries and between countries with the same type of fertility pattern by calculating the so-called fertility rate ratios. The paper also provides an overview of the main theories and concepts explaining the course of family formation processes in Europe and indicates factors that shape fertility patterns in European countries today.

Opis:
The article describes the variation of fertility in Poland by voivodships in the period 1990–2009, separately for urban and rural areas. The analysis is based on the total fertility rate, the age-specific fertility rates (fertility patterns), and a median age of childbearing and their change over time. These variables are used to identify groups of similar voivodships. The underlying changes, whereby the peak in the age-specific fertility is shifted towards older age groups, demonstrate patterns of fertility transformation, which can be observed in several areas of Poland. It has been shown that the changes in fertility by voivodships were not homogeneous as to the intensity, but similar to the direction. A similar trend has been observed for changes in the total fertility rate. However, these considerations do not allow to believe that in all voivodships timing of fertility was a decisive factor of observed changes. In some voivodships the quantum effects were more important. This suggests that the transformation of fertility in different areas of Poland was not driven by the same determinants.

Opis:
Założenia opolskiej Specjalnej Strefy Demograficznej odwołują się do strukturalno-systemowych teorii społeczeństwa. Stan katastrofy demograficznej wymaga, moim zdaniem, przeprowadzenia reprezentatywnych badań empirycznych wśród młodego pokolenia, opracowania socjologicznego studium i uzupełnienia teoretycznych założeń Specjalnej Strefy Demograficznej w regionie opolskim.
The key concepts of Special Demographic Zone in Opole region follow the structural and system theories. I am convinced that the state of demographic catastrophe in Opole region requires conducting representative empirical research among the young generation, developing sociological study and supplementing the theoretical assumptions of Special Demographic Zone in Opole region.

Opis:
According to the regular value-surveys Hungary belongs to the secular-rational and material thinking countries. As a heritage of communism there are a strong basis of paternalist structures and a low rate of trust and social capital. Although family and children are important and central parts of Hungarian value system, there are a high rate of divorces and non-marital cohabitation and a low level of willingness to marriage and childbearing in Hungarian society. Fertility index (1,3) is one of the lowest in Europe. In the background of unfavourable indicators we can find the crisis of values. These values and patterns have formed in different historical situations and effect on people as a special mixture of norms. External circumstances do not allow people to develop their learned values. Women at the labour market are impacted by double pressure: in a modern society after the expansion of higher education they are motivated to work and build a carrier. (It is also a compulsion because of the insufficient incomes.) On the other hand they share traditional values, too: women are responsible for the happiness and cohesion of families. Social problems, uncertain future, inflexible and labile workplaces do not support them to have a real chance for decision. This paper attempts to give a view about the state and roots of Hungarian values in connections with family patterns and also the current demographic trends. State, local governments, NGOs, churches and other actors in the field of social policy have a great challenge to protect and strengthen families for a renewable and sustainable society.
