Opis:
Three different types of Fe(II)-modified natural zeolites were tested as supports in continuous-flow columns for the treatment of Cr(VI) contaminated water. The natural zeolites chosen as support were commercially available Zeosand (80% clinoptilolite), ATZ (79% phillipsite/chabazite), and ZS-55RW (90% Chabazite). All the examined modified zeolites turned out active for hexavalent chromium abatement, lowering its concentration below the European regulation level, even at relatively high flow rates (40 mL/h, linear velocity 15 cm/h). Zeosand, having a broader pH range of stability, was found to be the best one in terms of both Fe(II) uptake (0.54 wt%) and Cr removal (90 mg Cr/Kg zeolite).

Opis:
Continuous increase in the number of multidrug-resistant strains forces us to look for drugs with completely new mode of action. One of the bacterial property determining the pathogenicity of these microorganisms is their ability to obtain iron. Because in the living environment of these single-celled individuals, its concentration is much lower than this necessary for their growth. For this reason, bacteria created various type of iron aquisition systems, including the Feo system, which mechanism of Fe2+ ion uptake is not fully understood, and protein from the Hmu family belonging to ABC transporters. The Feo transport system is one of the most common systems that is exclusively responsible for importing Fe2+ ions. It consists of three proteins: FeoA, FeoB and FeoC. FeoB is a transmembrane protein that is believed to play a key role in the mechanism of Fe2+ ion uptake. The other two components are cytoplasmic proteins. Both, FeoA and FeoC, are cytoplasmic proteins resembling the construction of transcription regulators. ABC transporters play an equally important role in maintaining iron homeostasis. These include proteins from Hmu family. HmuUV complex catalyses the import of these ions in hem iron form. The structure of this complex consists of TMD dimer (HmuU) and NBD dimer (HmuV). The HmuU is considered to be a permease - just like the FeoB described earlier while HmuV is the ATP binding protein.

Opis:
The paper presents the issue of synthetic cast iron production in the electric induction furnace exclusively on the steel scrap base. Silicon carbide and synthetic graphite were used as carburizers. The carburizers were introduced with solid charge or added on the liquid metal surface. The chemical analysis of the produced cast iron, the carburization efficiency and microstructure features were presented in the paper. It was stated that ferrosilicon can be replaced by silicon carbide during the synthetic cast iron melting process. However, due to its chemical composition (30% C and 70% Si) which causes significant silicon content in iron increase, the carbon deficit can be partly compensated by the carburizer introduction. Moreover it was shown that the best carbon and silicon assimilation rate is obtained where the silicon carbide is being introduced together with solid charge. When it is thrown onto liquid alloy surface the efficiency of the process is almost two times less and the melting process lasts dozen minutes long. The microstructure of the cast iron produced with the silicon carbide shows more bulky graphite flakes than inside the microstructure of cast iron produced on the pig iron base.

Opis:
The paper compares the foundry production in years 1999-2013 on a world scale, in countries counted among the leading producers of castings, and in Poland. Various types of foundry alloys were taken into account. It was found that the position of China – the leader in the world production of castings – was not changed over many years, however China's share in the total production of casting has stabilised at the level of 42-44% during the recent five years. In the analysed period of time Poland increased the share in the world production of castings from 1.07% to about 1.23%, so that Polish production of castings was almost doubled. There is a tendency on the world scale that the grey cast iron fraction in the total production of castings decreases, while an increase occurs as far as spheroidal graphite cast iron, cast steel, and aluminium alloy castings are concerned.

Opis:
The process of ferroptotic death is characterized by the overwhelming, iron-depending accumulation of lethal lipid ROS. Unlike other forms of apoptotic and non-apoptotic death, this requirement for ROS accumulation appears to be universal. Redox cycling is a characteristic of transition metals such as iron (Ferritin Fe3+ ⇄ Ferrous Fe2+). Iron via the Fenton reaction can exacerbate the consequences of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production, leading to the generation of hydroxyl radicals. The superoxide ion can participate in regenerating ferrous iron that is required for the Fenton reaction. An excess of iron is toxic due to its ability to engage in redox cycling and promote free radical formation. Super oxide anion generation; O2 → ・O2-. Hydrogen peroxide production; ・O2- + 2H+ + e- → H2O2. Haber-Weiss reaction; H2O2 + O2- → ・OH + OH- + O2. Fenton reaction; Fe2+ + H2O2 → Fe3+ + OH- + ・OH. Reduction to Fe(Ⅱ); Fe3+ + ・O2- → Fe2+ + O2. Ferritin is stable in iron-rich conditions, whereas it is rapidly degraded under conditions of iron starvation and ferritin degradation can be led. New blood vessel formation in angiogenesis is fundamental to tumor growth, invasion, and metastatic dissemination. Iron deficiency will lead to the dysfunction of immune system, metabolic disorders, myasthenia and anemia, whereas, excess iron also damages several vital organs. Thus, iron is essential for multiple cell functions, but is also potentially deleterious reasons of its ability to generate free oxygen radicals, iron balance by continuously recycling and reusing cellular iron, storage in ferritin, and export through ferroportin protecting cells from free iron toxicity. However. the exact molecular mechanism involved on iron imbalance in development for tumor cells and the iron overload-mediated induction of apoptosis are required to be explored in future.

Opis:
The paper presents data concerning the total production of castings over the 2000-2014 period, both on a global scale, and in Poland. The basic types of casting alloys were taken into account. Changes in the production volume and structure over the period of the analysed 15 years were pointed out with respect to countries leading in foundry production. The topmost position in the world foundry industry is held by China for several years (with almost 45% share in the foundry market), the second place is taken by India (with almost 9% share). A distinct reduction in the shares of the once significant producers of castings, such as USA, Japan, Germany, Russia, Italy, or France, was observed over the 2000-2014 period. Poland had a share of 1.16% in 2000, and of 1.02% in 2014. Comparing the detailed data concerning the years 2000 and 2014, one can see that the fractions of castings made of ductile iron, cast steel, aluminium alloys, or magnesium alloys increase on a global scale, while such alloys as grey cast iron or malleable are in decline.
